I can’t remember if there’s an audiobook thread so popping this here. I just finished listening to Aliens: Bishop by TR Napper. Set after and tied in to Aliens and Alien³ it weaves a few different storylines together. It’s been a nice companion piece to the Alien Earth series as it treads familiar themes as the TV show: maybe corporations put profits over people; what it means to be human; maybe family is the marines we meet along the way; and man’s hubris ultimately leads to bad bitey times. The book is briskly paced and having different readers focus on chapters led by specific characters (the Lance Hendrickson-alike being my favourite) gives a nice bit of variety.

And an old one from the archive…

The high contrast black and white is probably me using the medium to it’s best potential but, as the posts above show, it’s not really the style I tend to go for nowadays.

Watched only watched the first ep of Alien Earth. Thought it was good though. The episode was a little bit too long because it was quite talky in places but the brief looks at the new creatures look neat and there’s clearly much more nasty little fuckers to come. The big fella got a good bit of screen time early on so looks like he’ll still be the star of the show.

UNIT needs to be placed under serious scrutiny. How much tax payer cash was spent building a rotating building when they could have just built guns on the two unarmed sides for a fraction of the price.

A medieval marginalia menagerie work in progress.

I’ve put a few designs up as stickers etc on Redbubble. Turned on t-shirts and a bunch of other stuff as an option. So far I have sold a mouse mat (who is buying mouse mats in the 2020s?!).

Wait, are you saying an RTD-era story doesn’t really hang together when you think about it?

I have found that treating Dr Who like a rollercoaster works best. Enjoy the ups, downs, and loop-the-loops but don’t actually think too hard about the narrative.

The last weeks episode is a great example of this. Successful podcaster is actually leader of a massive movement but no one at UNIT is aware of him. He thinks aliens are a fakes put on by UNIT despite stumbling across real aliens. Space granny is putting a team together a team to fuck with the doctor and a social media influencer is the best candidate she can muster. I try to push such intrusive thoughts to one side so I can whoop with delight when the monsters spring back to life and bite someone’s arm off.

One thing that makes this really difficult though is the fact that it’s subtle as a brick with the messages and mirroring of worries and woes of society today. I like a bit of subtext in my sci fi but this was 100% text and 0% sub.

At least the doctor didn’t cry, yet again this episode as that’s getting a bit one note. A bit of fury was a nice change.

Thanks. They’ve been a whole lot of fun to do.

Here’s the most recent print I’ve done. After stumbling across a sub Reddit dedicated to the subject I’ve been on a medieval marginalia style kick. Animals acting like people, odd perspectives and scales, and general weirdness all provide plenty of fun source material.

Sorry for resurrecting an ancient thread but wanted to ask about using these website. I want to upload some designs as stickers and wanted to know: how big a pain in the arse is the uploading process; how big a pain in the arse is the money side. With the second question I’m not looking to make any money, I just want to point people towards a link when they ask about buying some of my designs. Are there any hidden costs with these sites? I’m not wanting to be left out of pocket for the convenience of other folks.

My wife and I are catching Godzilla Minus One tomorrow before it leaves cinemas. I am looking foeward to seeing and and the prospectbof getting rid of both kids for a couple of hours!

So, this was fantastic. Did what any successful disaster movie does – use the large scale as a backdrop to tell small scale stories. Human stories where never overwrought and felt genuine. Large scale disaster lead to moments of breathless tension. Really glad the big G was left as a force of nature and there was no attempt to humanise him (with a corny scene along the lines of small child places hand on colapsed Godzilla and has a moment of connection when he opens his eye). There was a trailer for Kong / Godzilla before this and that looked like absolute souless dogshit in comparison.

As a bit of a treat to keep my youngest occupied on Christmas Eve, I picked up the ports of Portal and Portal 2 on the Switch. These games are all-time greats, so brilliantly simple in concept but with such imaginative challenges and a great sense of design. Just fantastic.

The two player mode in Portal 2 is one of the best couch coop modes I can remember. Hopefully thats in the Switch port and you get a chance to play it.

The Warhammer 40k: Boltgun game is a lot of fun. Fast paced movement and good gunplay. All the weapons feel weighty and like they’d actually doing damage in real life. One of the better retro / boomer shooters I’ve recently played. Final level is a bit of a pain in the tits though (making you replay all the bosses you’d beaten earlier in the game).

Finally bit the bullet and cancelled my pull list at my local comic shop. All that’s been on it for the last couple of years is 2000AD/Judge Dredd Megazine. Given we’ve mived out to beyond the city suburbs and have two kids I was only getting to the shop once every couple of months and, as a result, it was a chore finding time to sit and read the backlog. Feel a bit guilty as five minutes after leaving the shop I set up a mail order subscription for 2000AD/Judge Dredd Megazine but, ultimately, the saving on cost and the convenience of getting it delivered straight to my door each week outweighed the sense of being a loyal customer that’s kept my pull list on life support for the past few years.

My wife used it fairly recently (last 12 months or so) to get a Wii game disc repaired for our eldest. The susc wasnt badly damaged. A couple minor scratches but it wouldnt load beyond the title menu. I’m not 100% sure what the repair process entails. I think they have a machine that buffs the disc / removes a thin layer of plastic from it. Whatever they did it worked.

Long story short: it’s worth going into the store and asking.
