I’m watching the prequel trilogy with the kids. Fucking hell, these are long films. One question ran through my mind after AOTC finished: are we as an audience meant to know that Palpetine is Sideous? With hindsight / half a brain it seems obvious but is that what was intended?

IIRC a lot of the promotional material ran with everyone knowing, I don’t think it was meant to be a secret or a big revelation.  But also, I gave on the prequels after episode 2, so I don’t know exactly how episode 3 handled it.

Yeah, it’s meant to be clear and the credits are even explicit about it.

More complicated from AOTC is all the Syfo-Dias stuff which feels like it was left over from an earlier draft and as far as I know is never really explained.

    Syfo-Dias = Sidious.

There was always the Q of would there be another twist to amp the tragedy? The answer is: No, there wasn’t.

    Syfo-Dias = Sidious.

That was always the implication but the way Obi-Wan talks about him it sounds like Syfo-Dias was someone separate that he actually knew and who died before AOTC. For it to be Sidious implies quite a convoluted explanation that is never provided.

Oh, there’s two entire back stories constructed for that.  The older was more light touch, the newer has more been a deeper exploration of Dooku, who was on the down path for a good while before encountering Sidious.
