Heartthrob actor Richard Chamberlain, star of ‘Thorn Birds’, dies aged 90
He was the king of the miniseries between 1978 and 1983 in the US, including the original adaptation of SHOGUN.
Val Kilmer has died.

Wow, that’s so sad.
I loved his appearance in Life Is Short (which Stephen Merchant also posted in memory of Kilmer):
The Pope has died.

RIP. Will be interesting to see who follows him up.
I bet it’s another Pope
I bet it’s another Pope
How awesome would it be if it was a capybayra instead?
More seriously, it’s a really big question. It does make a big difference to the world whether the Pope is a more progressive or regressive figure, and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top this time.
Maybe I should finally watch The Two Popes. That looked like a good movie.

I think I’ve seen it! (Not that I remember much about it…)

My favorite memory of that movie, which was in cinemas around the same time as a documentary about the singer Madonna, was the marquee at a London theatre that advertised to two films being shown there:
THE POPE MUST DIE/
IN BED WITH MADONNA
I hope the guests on Pope Idol will be better than last time
I’m going to be furious if the media don’t cover the new election process under the banner of Top Of The Popes.
It’s a shame Benedict died first. Having a spare Pope hanging around would have been handy in just this situation.
I bet it’s another Pope
Maybe they’ll pick one who’s Catholic this time.

I’m hoping for a bear that shits in the woods.
I hope it will be Pizzaballa. Funny name aside, he’s a good man who cares a lot about the situation in Israel/Palestine. I think he’s officially the Latin Patriarch for the Holy Land, or some title like that. It would send an important message.
In the betting game, the odds are currently for Pietro Parolin, so Italian. And the next highest rated is Luis Antonio Tagle, a Filipino.
Next Pope Best Odds Implied Probability
Pietro Parolin 15/8 35%
Luis Antonio Tagle 3/1 25%
Matteo Zuppi 7/1 13%
Peter Erdo 9/1 10%
The Pope Idol thing doesn’t seem such a far cry from this.
Erdo would be bad, he’s friendly with Orban and by extension probably Putin.
I listened to a podcast a while ago with Rob van Wijk, an academic who works for the strategic think tank Clingendael Institute, and he mentioned how the Vatican is a powerful force in international diplomacy. He thinks they have one of the best information networks in the world because they’re literally everywhere. If Erdo would become pope, he might steer those resources in the wrong direction.

Yikes. Zuppi, on the other hand, sounds good – he was a close advisor of Francis’ and seems to share his more liberal views, as well as a focus on relieving poverty.
Also, I like his smirk that he has in almost all photos of him.

Interesting! And yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Jackson Guice has passed away, according to a Facebook post from his brother-in-law:
Joe Don Baker, Rugged Star of ‘Walking Tall,’ Dies at 89
Being talked about in the comics thread: PETER DAVID
Charles Rangel, former longtime N.Y. congressman who represented Harlem, dies at 94
Jonathan Joss, ‘King of the Hill’ Voice Actor, Dies at 59
Frederick Forsyth has died.
Smiley Smile is my favorite album by the Beach Boys and one of my favorite things to listen to. Thanks for making beautiful music Brian
I saw a few documentaries about the British Invasion and the reaction of a few American bands like the Beach Boys.
The Beatles came out with Rubber Soul album, and it prompted Brian Wilson to come up with Pet Sounds, and that started a competition of albums (Can you top this?) with chords, musical effects, like the Revolver album and ultimately Sgt. Pepper.
RIP Wilson.
I’m actually impressed that he lasted this long, given his drug abuse and mental issues. Nevertheless, Brian Wilson was a songwriting prodigy/genius, and he deserves to finally Rest In Peace.
I watched Love & Mery on the plane a few years ago, and it was an interesting biopic. The weirdest thing about it though was they had John Cusack playing old Brian Wilson and Paul Dano playing young Brian Wilson, and it was absolutely not possible to believe that they were supposed to be the same person. (John Cusack just isn’t that kind of actor.)

Have you ever watched Todd Haynes’ film “I’m Not There”? It’s based on Bob Dylan’s life, with SIX different actors portraying him during different phases of his career/life. The actors include Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett (!), Marcus Carl Franklin (!!), Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw.
Yeah, I loved that movie. Just a wonderful way to approach somebody who has kind of turned himself into a legend.
The woman who did the SaveaFox youtube channel where she showed her rescue foxes has taken her own life. Very sad. Apparently there was some serious cyberbyllying going on. Her videos were great. RIP
I’m not familiar with her, but that is sad news.
Xhabu the cross eyed gibbon died. RIP

Fuck!
I remember a long while ago (early 2000’s) my mom bumped into him coming out of a convenience store in Vancouver’s West End.
She’s stunned, “Oh! Hello!”
He puts on the nicest British smile and says “Hello!”, like really making her felt like he listened and cared.
True professional.
She gets home and phones me, happy as (well, she doesn’t swear) and questions if I know of him.
“General Zod? Mom, are you really asking me that? I would have kneeled!”
A guilty pleasure of mine is Valkyrie. He’s awesome in the limited screen time he has.
Actually, love him in every movie I’ve seen him in.
RIP
Terence Stamp has died.
While my first and foremost Terence Stamp appearance was as General Zod, of course; but I will always be impressed and cheered by his performance in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. RIP, Bernadette Bassenger.
