Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter, dies at 79
I was surprised to hear about this; even more surprised to hear that she was 79! Then again, she joined Fleetwood Mac 52 years ago, after spending years with another band, so I guess the math makes sense. Tempus fugit. RIP, Christine Perfect.

I don’t think 2 Tone travelled widely in the US but it was the primary soundtrack to kids in early 80s Britain. Young guys of varied backgrounds and ethnicity that fused Caribbean music with punk and whatever else they fancied. There’s a lot more to The Specials than Ghost Town but it is an amazing song.

Interesting they were nearly the same age. Pele came to fame as a teenager in the 1958 World Cup but Westwood was older than I thought, nearing her forties when punk hit in the late 70s.

This Christmas-to-New-Years week has been very busy with regard to the deaths of well-known people. I watched a news segment yesterday highlighting people we lost this year; while Pele made the list at the last minute, Vivienne Westwood didn’t, nor (obviously) did Barbara Walters or Pope Benedict.
IT’S A BUSY TIME OF THE YEAR.

Richard Belzer’s popular character Detective John Munch holds a record for appearance in the greatest number of different television shows:
Munch has become the only fictional character, played by a single actor, to physically appear on 10 different television series. These shows were on five different networks: NBC (Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and 30 Rock), Fox (The X-Files and Arrested Development), UPN (The Beat), HBO (The Wire) and ABC (Jimmy Kimmel Live!). Munch has been one of the few television characters to cross genres, appearing not only in crime drama series, but sitcom (Arrested Development), adult animated sitcom (American Dad), late night comedy (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and horror and science fiction (The X-Files).
I think Alan Partridge could probably top that, given how many different series and in-character chatshow appearances Coogan has done with the character.
Off the top of my head:
The Day Today
Knowing Me, Knowing You
Knowing Me, Knowing Yule
I’m Alan Partridge
I’m Still Alan Partridge
This Time With Alan Partridge
Mid-Morning Matters
Open Books
Places Of My Life
Scissored Isle
Comic Relief
Election Night Armistice
Various talk shows (TFI Friday, Jonathan Ross, Clive Anderson)
….and probably lots more TV that I’m forgetting.
And then on top of that there’s all the radio stuff (On The Hour, Knowing Me Knowing You), the Alpha Papa film, the Oasthouse podcast, the audio books, live shows and more.
Leiji Matsumoto, a legend of Japanese comics and animation has died
I think Alan Partridge could probably top that, given how many different series and in-character chatshow appearances Coogan has done with the character.
Here’s an expanded list of other John Munch appearances; my favorite is the Luther episode where, while not appearing, Detective munch is mentioned by Idris Elba as an NYPD contact:
Homicide: Life on the Street—119 out of 122 episodes in the series
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit—242 out of 325 episodes in the series
Homicide: The Movie—television movie
Law & Order—four episodes: “Charm City”, “Baby, It’s You” (part 1), “Sideshow (Part 1)”, and “Entitled (Part 2)”
Arrested Development—one episode: “Exit Strategy”
The X-Files—one episode: “Unusual Suspects”
The Beat—one episode: “They Say It’s Your Birthday”
Law & Order: Trial by Jury—one episode: “Skeleton (Part 2)”
The Wire—one episode: “Took”
American Dad—one episode: “Next of Pin”, Detective Munch shows up at the end of the episode to recruit Steve to join him as a detective after being impressed by Steve’s detective work at the bowling alley.
30 Rock—two episodes: “¡Qué Sorpresa!”, the characters are watching an SVU episode, with dialogue written and action shot specifically for 30 Rock. Richard Belzer also appears as the actor playing Munch in “Last Lunch”, part one of 30 Rock’s series finale, when Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) lands a guest role on SVU as a corpse.
Jimmy Kimmel Live!—one episode: October 7, 2009. Richard Belzer was interviewed as himself, then does an impromptu scene as Munch with Kimmel and Joel McHale.[46]
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt—one episode: “Kimmy Goes to the Doctor!”, the characters are watching a fictional Law & Order spinoff episode on their television.[47]
A Muppet version of Munch appeared in the Sesame Street sketch “Law & Order: Special Letters Unit” where he was portrayed by David Rudman.
Munch makes a cameo appearance on the 1993 Paul Shaffer album The World’s Most Dangerous Party.
An artwork version of Munch appears in the 2016 comic book Spider-Man/Deadpool #6.[48]
An unseen Munch is mentioned, by Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, as an NYPD SVU contact on episode 5 of the UK crime drama Luther. Notably, DCI Luther is played by Idris Elba, who played Stringer Bell in the HBO drama The Wire, where Munch previously cameoed.
On a 2021 episode of the podcast Quality Time, Munch is portrayed in an improvised scene from Homicide by the episode’s guest, Tom Myers.
