The lawyer says that they have taken the kids to a paediatric cardiologist who is willing to attest that the children are now having “heart issues” as a result of the mistake.

This seems like gross dereliction of duty by the pharmacy staff, they have basically issued the wrong medicine. Flu is a different virus to Covid and vaccines for the latter have yet to be approved for under 12s as the testing phase is ongoing. Influenza is most dangerous to the very young and the very old, unlike Covid where the vast majority of the young seem to experience it symptom free with little risk.

I’m a little worried about the subtext here which strays into anti-vax territory and as Dave says have rather inconclusive information about ‘heart problems’ that come from a legal source and not a medical one. However Walgreens should have their balls to the wall because whether it causes long term damage or not this is a terrible mistake.

You’d question the process used. In Malaysia, which is a developing country, I have been Covid vaccinated and took my 12 year old daughter last week to get hers. With the latter process I was informed by a doctor of the specific vaccine being issued (Pfizer), why that was being issued as it was the only vaccine approved for that age group, I had to present ID to confirm her age as being over 12, then at the injection point itself was shown the bottle and dosage before agreeing.

I’d posit in that process it is next to impossible to be issued with the incorrect vaccine. If it is possible in Walgreens their process is very badly broken.

The operations should be assisted by a tough, hard-headed utilization of Russia’s gas, oil, and natural resources to bully and pressure other countries.

The whole deal with the Nordstream pipeline makes me think Russia is playing its cards right…and Europe is shooting itself in the foot. Let’s hope we’re getting a mild winter. Or people will freeze to death. Wonder how that will effect the climate debate.

Sadly, what will probably happen is Wallgreens’ will pay the family off rather than win in court, leaving this as fodder for antivaxx dipshits.

He lives in the Yukon Territory and (assuming) he’s headed home from the Province of B.C. with his wife and two daughters.

    — On our last flight we had a psycho freaking on the plane. Either in withdrawal or harsh psychosis and anxiety. Kept swearing and saying “if I don’t get off this fucking plane I’m gonna snap!” Stewardesses didn’t do anything but avoid him all flight. Really scary. Well at the end when we were getting up to disembark he went ballistic about the crowded slow moving aisle and fought a passenger right in the row in front of the girls. Blood everywhere. Totally traumatizing. Never seen anything like it. Big bear hulk of a guy too. RCMP arrested him but only after everyone in rows 1-13 got off and they could get to him. We were in row 14. He was in row 15. The guy he fought was in row 13. Girls and ××××× and I felt like powerless victims all flight. Crazy.

    https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/4avkdw/rod-of-iron-ministries-purchases-property-in-tennessee

The MAGA-loving religious sect that worships with AR-15s has purchased a 130-acre property on a mountain in eastern Tennessee to serve as a “training center” and holy ground for its devoted, gun-toting followers, VICE News has learned.

The latest property acquisition is more evidence that Pastor Hyung Jin “Sean” Moon, a fervent conspiracy theorist and son of an accused cult leader, is determined to expand his reach into the American Heartland.

Moon’s congregation, Rod of Iron Ministries, also known as The World Peace and Unification Sanctuary, is a gun-centric spinoff of the much larger Unification Church, founded by his late father, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a self-proclaimed messiah and businessman whose followers were famously known as “Moonies.” The younger Moon, who also goes by “The Second King,” split from the main church amid a dramatic falling-out with his mother about who, between the two of them, was the rightful heir to his father’s empire.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus could be making comeback – but without the animals

Can a circus work without animals? Cirque du Soleil might just be the exception.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #77482

Most circuses now don’t have animals and haven’t for a while, not just the arty ones like Cirque Du Soleil. I took the kids to one a couple of years back, the performers were from somewhere in eastern Europe, the show was various bits of acrobatics and magic tricks and it was sold out, the crowd enjoyed and I can’t say we missed the animal bits.

If you think about it a good chunk of the acts on the ‘…Got Talent’ franchise on TV do those kinds of things and people enjoy it and it rates highly. The circus was essentially a compilation of the best acts on that show if you cut out the singers and comedians. I remember they did the ‘quick change’ act that went viral from AGT a few years back.

Negatively it’s almost certain but I suspect (and hope) mainly a lot of posturing.

China has had the might to take back Taiwan by force for decades and have never done it. America has always had at least an inferred and usually stated position they would defend it if that happened. It’s a slight escalation of words and deeds but within a long held status quo.

China has had the might to take back Taiwan by force for decades and have never done it.

I am not sure about that…I saw some simulation that showed it might be difficult. Taiwan would be able to kill a large part of the invasion force, maybe even stop it. Of course China could blockade Taiwan. I am not sure wether the US would step in if they do that.

  • #77797

That it could be bloody I don’t doubt, the numbers don’t suggest Taiwan alone would be able to stop the largest army in the world but I haven’t seen these simulations.

I just find it interesting that post WW2 there seems this constant fear of countries that rarely invade anywhere from countries that do it frequently.

Which is not to ignore that tensions are rising in the South China Sea with China pushing boundaries but it seems a long way off invasions.

This guy does fairly detailed military simulations on youtube, but I am not really sure how accurate he is:

Can China invade Taiwan within a year? Part 1/2: Balance of air/naval power (with US being neutral) – YouTube

Can China conquer Taiwan within a year? Part 2/2: The landings analyzed (with US being neutral) – YouTube

I think the whole logistics aspect makes it hard (or maybe impossible.) Taiwan would be able to take out many troop transports and aim a lot of of firepower at the landing spots.

Also Taiwan’s regular military is pretty small, but they have more than a million and a half reserves who would be mobilized.

He’s obviously more informed than me but every graphic has China with an overwhelming higher number of everything and pretty much the same tech. I don’t know it all looks very Falklands War to me, where a lot was made in advance of how tricky it could be but once the British managed to get that far they took some hits but overwhelmingly won.

I just feel that China also have never really desired it. They’ve had conflicts right on their borders and yes they have done some proxy shit, like everyone does, but never intervened directly. Xi may be more hawkish and anything can change but there seems a pattern of avoiding direct conflict.

Fuck knows if I am Arjan which is why I put in so many caveats. 😂

However if you are looking at past history we do seem in the west to project our own sins on others.

Iran was in the ‘axis of evil’ but they’ve never invaded anyone, the last direct war they were in Iraq instigated it with the support of the west.

Vietnam invaded Cambodia to get rid of the genocidal Pol Pot and then immediately handed the country over to UN control, the Cambodians love the Vietnamese, I was there on the anniversary of the invasion and they wave their flags as their great emancipators.

Cuba never invaded anyone but were invaded themselves.

North Korea were in a civil war I guess but apart from gesture politics have crossed no border for 70 years.

It may be naive as any stance may change, any despot may arrive, but I read constantly about tensions in the South China Sea area from UK media but if I’m honest nobody in Malaysia gives it much time as they don’t see China as an aggressor.

China’s imperial aspirations seem to be more about tieing developing nations to their infrastructure projects like the Belt and Road, or pumping cash into African nations so they can develop faster, creating a network of client states. It’s hard to do that if you’re a warmonger.

There’s a lot of soft power work going on and the interesting thing I read in Time a couple of years back is that the EU is very aggressive in this space. They split the map over where the 3 modern superpowers, USA, China and EU, used financial influence and they were all pretty equal. The EU always gives the impression of not doing it but they are all the time and just as bad as the US and China but with better PR.

Absolutely belt and road is buying influence but that’s always been the norm. The commonwealth as an example.

Oh yeah, the EU is absolutely an imperial power as well, and operating in the same sphere as the Chinese. The US is still kinda old school in terms of projecting military power around the world, but a lot of that is because they’re looking to prop up their military-industrial complex and they still maintain the Cold War mentality

  • #77854

owever if you are looking at past history we do seem in the west to project our own sins on others.

True, I think it is because Taiwan is regarded as part of “the democratic world” and could possibly be conquered by a non-democratic country that people are more prone to say we should protect Taiwan than we were to say we should protect Libya from the US.

It is a very odd situation. Taiwan is an exemplary civilized country, with a good human rights record etc. and yet we only recognize the mainland with its horrible human rights record as a sovereign country. And even though we don’t recognize Taiwan, we are talking about defending it from the country we do have diplomatic relations with.

  • #77856

That’s partly why I talk about the rhetoric and symbolism being so important. The concept of ‘face’ in a lot of east Asia is one it takes time to get to grips with but is often very strong.

In my last job we had a ‘country selector’ page on the website, being a US company someone in head office over there put flags next to each country including a Taiwan flag.

Uproar. A huge panic ensued to contact this guy who by this time had gone to bed not realising he’d caused a diplomatic stir and we’dsoon be getting complaints from the Chinese government, which they’d done when it was initially setup with the flag. It was taken down quickly enough this time it wasn’t escalated.

So the end result is we still maintained an office and subsidiary in Taiwan, we had a legal entity trading freely (while most of our product was produced in China by Taiwanese owned companies – the infamous Foxconn is a Taiwanese company). Nothing practical was prevented by China – they just didn’t want us to imply it operated independently even when it clearly does.

So I think that’s why a lot of people do concede to China’s wish to refer to Taiwan in the manner they prefer because it’s an enormous hassle not to for next to zero gain for anyone.

  • #77857

We also have to consider the economic aspects. If openly acknowledging Taiwan as an independent country means you lose business from China that you could retain by not making any statement one way or the other, then you do that, as morally questionable as it may sound.

3 users thanked author for this post.
  • #77858

Yes of course, I mean if my company had taken a stand the net result would undoubtedly be worse for all parties, especially Taiwan.

I only know this because of my last job and don’t know how widely it is known but in the 1980s/90s many a comedy punchline was about everything being ‘made in Taiwan’. Taiwan’s manufacturers never stopped they just moved to a cheaper workforce and property in mainland China and control the vast majority of electronics manufacturing (maybe other sectors too but I didn’t work in them).

So you can see how closely they work together, it’s not maybe as antagonistic a scenario as many imagine but part of the deal is to ‘show face’ to China and not acknowledge they are truly a separate state. That’s the main reason I am not really worried about an impending conflict.

It’s also interesting to look at the west’s approach from this direction because it is our tradition to make public declarations/condemnations  if we don’t like a certain behaviour but it’s something that appeases audiences at home rather than being at all useful. That invariably gets a poor reaction in east Asia and the way to possibly achieve change is through personal relationships. My old boss explained that business is a lot more relationship based than transactional here.

You cannot make a deal in my experience in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and China unless you go and have a meal or drinks with the potential buyer. For all his ills I think this is where Nixon was spot on, go over and talk to them.

i had no idea foxconn was Taiwanese, that’s very interesting.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #77865

Foxcon is just one of many. The media picked on them because media types all love Apple who use them a lot. In truth globally Mac sales are just around 5% of global computer sales.

I worked for a few years in supply chain for a computer manufacturer that sells ten times as many units as Apple and we never directly used Foxconn (they did contribute some parts) but all were Taiwanese run. Wistron, Pegatron and Quanta we used all with Taiwan HQs. Basically every entry level computer and mobile phone on the planet is made by one of those guys.

The scale of these operations is also insane, Foxconn have a single factory with over 300,000 workers, that is larger than the entire population of Pittsburgh in one workplace. A few years back while the media were feasting on suicides from their workers they never acknowledged the scale which actually turned out to be lower than average around the world.

COVID-19 denier and conspiracy theorist Mak Parhar dead at 48 – CBC.ca

Parhar’s court dates for violating COVID-19 public health orders were postponed because he was too sick

Prominent COVID-19 denier Mak Parhar, who gained profile in both the Flat Earth conspiracy community and anti-mask movement, died at his home in New Westminster Thursday.

The 48-year-old’s cause of death is not known. A spokesman for the B.C. Coroner Service said a coroner’s investigation, which could take months, will be conducted.

Parhar has been in the news the past two years for spreading COVID-19 falsehoods, operating his yoga studio in contradiction of public health orders and for being arrested and charged for disobeying quarantine laws.

In a rambling video from Nov. 3, Parhar said he had recently taken ivermectin, a drug that is falsely touted by anti-vaxxers as an off-label treatment for COVID-19, even though he didn’t believe COVID-19 was real.

“… that horse parasite remover? So I did take that and I feel like 40 to 50 per cent better. But I am a little bit down right now,” he said in the video.

Ivermectin is most commonly used as a livestock dewormer and has been proven effective in treating parasites, not viruses. Health authorities in the U.S. and Canada have issued warnings about taking it for COVID-19.

An earlier video Parhar shot in late October shows him coughing and complaining about being sick, but denying he has what he calls “CONVID.”

“I’m jacked up on extra strength Advil and Tylenol for the last two days, that’s the only way I can function. If I’m not on Advil or Tylenol, I’m lying in bed,” he said.

Parhar’s notoriety as a conspiracy theorist grew when he repeatedly violated Canada’s Quarantine Act after returning to B.C. from a U.S. flat earth conference in the fall of 2020 — something he bragged about to a crowd rallying in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

He was arrested in November 2020, and was scheduled to appear in court last week but the dates were postponed. The Public Prosecution Service of Canada said Parhar informed the Crown he was too sick to start the trial.

In April 2021, Parhar had his lawsuit accusing the B.C. government of kidnapping and terrorism for arresting him, thrown out of court for being “patently absurd and nonsensical.”

The City of Delta suspended the business licence of Parhar’s yoga studio in March 2020 after he made false claims that hot yoga kills coronavirus, while encouraging students to show up for class despite public health orders at the time restricting gatherings.

Is it wrong that I laughed out loud when I heard he died?
This local nutjob did all he could to grab the spotlight and being on camera at every opportunity, spreading his bullshit non-stop.
    Good riddance!

The actual story is that the owner of A&W Restaurants came up with the 1/3 pounder for the same price as McDonald’s 1/4 pounder, and even had an ad campaign with the slogan “Third is the Word”. And yes, Americans stayed away because they assumed that, since 3 is smaller than 4, 1/3 must be smaller than 1/4.

This Kyle Rittenhouse trial is a farce.

Fake tears, a snide remark by the judge, the prosecution not being allowed to bring in practically smoking gun evidence, those murdered can’t be referred to by certain words in court.

The 17 year old went out of his way to go to another state with an assault rifle and his actions are deemed as self defense. What exactly was he doing there in the first place? Then after his shooting, the police handled him with kid gloves, gave him a bottle of cold water. Then the right wingers hailed him as a hero, they posted up big money for his bond, he took pictures while out of bond. His mother gave his action her blessing.

And most are saying that he should be given mercy because he is a minor. Funny how when nonwhite teens are arrested they have the book thrown at them and tried as an adult. But him…

He will probably get off and I wouldn’t be surprised. It is like the Rodney King trial. It was moved to Simi Valley and the jury was picked from there, a community full of retired cops. Did you think a jury from there would convict the four, especially over the beatdown of a black man?

Nothing has changed. If anything, it has gotten worse.

    Makes me wonder…

And if it had been a black kid killing white people, he’d be on death row right now.

That also assumes the cops didn’t kill him at the time of the incident…

The Rittenhouse ‘trial’ reads to me as: “let’s exclude every bit of evidence that damns the little bastard so he can get off”.

I’m kind of annoyed with the prosecutors in this case, too. I get the impression they thought this would be a slam-dunk and maybe they didn’t prepare as hard as they could have and should have. When, before the start of the trial, the judge ruled that the people Rittenhouse shot could not be referred to as “victims’ since doing so might prejudice the jury, while simultaneously not banning the defense from using the terms “looters” and “arsonists” to describe the people Rittenhouse killed, the District Attorney’s office should have known this was going to be a tough one; yet they seem to have shown up to court unprepared, with witnesses whose cross-examination testimony seemed to hurt rather than help their case against Kyle.

One thing that bothers me about the circus that is the Rittenhouse trial is that the Kenosha PD is, yet again, getting off with no consequences. Regardless of whether or not people buy into Rittenhouse’s self defense angle, none of this shit would have happened if the Kenosha Police were in anyway a responsible police department. But nope, they not only allowed an untrained, armed militia to patrol the streets on their behalf, the thanked them for it. All during a protest sparked by the actions of who? Oh right, the Kenosha PD. They didn’t just allow this to happen, they set the table for It every step of the way. Then when it did happen they let the shooter walk on by. But is anyone still talking about their negligence, favoritism and complete dereliction of duty to serve and protect? Nope. Everyone is just talking about the biased judge and all that crap. But hey, that’s the American Justice system. Victims and common sense be damned if there’s a young white boy defendant. Bonus points if it involves the right to bear arms and shooting people in “self defense” during a hostile situation that the defendant helped create.

Regarding the amendment about bearing arms and militia:

It has been said that parts of the Constitution were compromises to some states and that the amendment at the time was there for those states to arm themselves to quell slave revolts and keep the slaves in line.

Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that really was the case…

Locally (BC), it feels like the end of the world again.
After a summer of record heat & drought (and learning new phrases like ‘Heat Dome’) we’ve gone the other way and another new phrase; ‘Atmospheric River’
Link – Fires to floods: How extreme weather has played out in B.C. in 2021

A massive amount of rainfall has caused flooding, landslides, and wiped out parts of Highways in BC’s South and Interior.
This has caused some major shit.

Not too far away from Greater Vancouver is Abbotsford/Chilliwack/Sumas Prairie (1 – 2 hrs. East, at U.S. border)
Those people are hit hard and can’t get out, or through.
(I work with some people that live out that way, 1 1/2 drive to work so they can own property somewhere.
Some still aren’t back and don’t know when. Military involved.)
It’s been a learning lesson for me, but I guess in the Sumas Prairie like 100 years ago they drained Sumas Lake for some rich farmland.
4 major pumps are always needed, now working past their limits and one failed. Water coming in from American side.
Levee idea got quashed today, military concentrated on temporary repair of leaking dikes.

Oh yeah, more rain on the way, but they think they can get a handle on it.
Actually some feel good stories of people banding together to save the animals and get them to higher ground.
Non-stop, because you’re the one that’s there, and we have to, y’know?

The entire City of Merritt is evacuated.
I remember someone saying this will be an easy evacuation as no one will want to stay.
The water treatment station went down, and as the whole town is flooded the toilets have nowhere to go, this will get rank, real quick.

In other areas there is some serious travel routes down for months.

Rumors of a gas shortage soon had some people’s true colors come out.
Lots of store everywhere are running out of Toilet paper again, and why buy a dozen eggs when you can buy 6 dozen?
Vancouver Island had multiple stations run out of fuel and we all thought that was silly and people would wake up.

Then the press conference today at 3:30 has restrictions on the purchase of gasoline. 30 Litres per visit maximum.
(I guess routes affected are how we get our gas. Washington, Oregon, and California asked to help.)
Multiple other travel restrictions for affected areas, and please stay home and work from home.
As I’m driving home (stuck in traffic because I guess there’s an accident, or 3, that I never see…) and wondering how they’re going to enforce that, by 3:50 they’re reporting line-ups outside gas stations with people visibly bringing multiple fuel tanks.
(The pumps are by credit card, so even if they can set a limit, just do a more transactions and you don’t pay the attendants enough for them to do anything.)

    People are fucking scum!
No, not all. But even if it’s way less than 10%, their actions hurt far more.
Seriously, when you’re not severely affected, are you feeling left out? Why start this shit?
Plus, some days it seems like their numbers can be 20%.
Add the fucking scum to the fucking jerks (15% – 30%) and I’m not liking these numbers.

People need to be better than this as weather-related events can easily get worse.
Good thing we’ve learned how to stop having those damned earthquakes!

As for the Kyle Rittenhouse verict, that was just horrible.
I heard one thing that said this case was very much one of “you can see what you want to see”.

Sad, and can only make things worse.
Hoping for the justifiable outrage to be peaceful and violence free.
    No more hurt.

Quick search, and found this link.
Kyle Rittenhouse’s not guilty verdict is a symptom of a bigger sickness – MSNBC

This country is awash in more guns than people. Someone just slightly older than Rittenhouse was easily able to buy him a military-style rifle that can pierce body armor. And under Wisconsin law as interpreted by the judge, he technically was able to legally open-carry that rifle as a minor, despite being considered not mature enough in the eyes of the law to vote, or buy cigarettes or alcohol.

    I’m sorry, what? A 17 year-old?
How can you buy a gun for another person?
How can you put a military weapon in a minor’s hand, or any un-trained hand for that matter?
I can understand a parent giving a regular hunting rifle as a gift, and only under supervision, but this is just wrong.

Seems like the laws are far away from where they need to be, on a most basic level.
I meant gun control as I typed, but that applies to the interpretation of self-defense also.
“The best defense is a good offense” should not apply here, except to prove pre-meditated murder.

Is it unique for the US that trials get livestreamed or shown on tv like the Rittenhouse trial? Who decides what trials get livestreamed and which aren’t?

This is just another example for white U.S. citizens that they should take the law into their own hands…. I’ve never had to point my guns at another person and hope I never do, unfortunately some people are just itching for an opportunity to do so.

We had a nasty riot in Rotterdam some days ago, protestors set some police vans on fire, threw fireworks at the cops and the cops responded by shooting some people with live ammo. Seven people were seriously wounded in the end and there were rumors someone had died, but no confirmation on that.

It feels bad, there is a bad atmosphere and going along with that corona is going badly. An MP from the right wing Forum for Democracy threatened the current government in parliament with “tribunals”. Forum is also going on about research into satanic child abuse, they seem to be surfing on a Qanon wave.

This case has “rigged” “wrong” written all over it, but that is how things really are. We all know what the general consensus is, but apparently in the court system a LOT hinges on presenting your case and using the technicalities of the laws (some of the state laws in the US are very antiquated even going back to segregation and were never updated). There is a difference between not guilty and innocent. It is a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiations, plea deals, strategies, as well as (in some cases) moving the trial to another location, getting a rigged jury and judge. Want to be a lawyer?

The cynical tweets posted upthread said that the legal system has worked as it always had and doing what it was originally designed to do.

Again, some key laws do go back to Jim Crow, as with other aspects of society. A lot has been carried over from segregation and slavery. Then again, this country was never really built on love and kindness…

Given all the news incidents about police shooting minorities on sight, pulling them over while driving and beating them. Then there is the police giving the Kyle Rittenhouses of the US kid gloves and saying that the shooter of Asians in those massage parlors “was just having a bad day”…

Has anyone looked into the procedure of recruitment to the police force nationwide?
Not just the gun training and use of force/takedown training, but where do they get these people?

Isn’t there a federal regulating of the police forces at least in major cities?

Let’s not forget Trump, the kingpin who enabled and expanded the voter base to include the outright racists.

72 million voted for him. All this says a lot about the true identity of Americans.

They are all held in ignorance on purpose. and against progressive ideology, even some of the truthful CRT as that would raise consciousness.

Reminds me of what some said about Jan 6th:

That is not the real USA. That is not America.

    Are you sure about that?
