I saw a news story talking about how, if AOC and Mamdani were European politicians, they would be considered “centrist” based on their platforms. Mamdani in particular wasn’t elected because of his trans or LGBTQ or immigration positions; he was elected on the platform of working to provide affordable housing, affordable childcare, affordable health insurance, and making sure New Yorkers don’t starve to death. Not exactly radical demands, so I’m not sure what Chuck and Nancy are complaining about.

Socialism is so ill defined in the US. If you ask 10 people off the street you might get 10 different definitions. Looks like it’s made to be confusing in the States on purpose.

Well wiki says they were aiming to create an agrarian socialist state. If you do ctrl + f on the Pol Pot article, you get 15 results for socialist, saying they wanted a socialist state, they were doing a socialist revolution, they were building a socialist society, etc.
Honestly this labeling of various different revolutionary marxist groups as either socialist or maoist or leninist or communist is just a sleight of hand, these people pretend to be what is convenient for their revolution, in truth many so-called leftists are just bloodthirsty tyrant wannabes.

And you can believe people when they say they’re socialist but then they go ahead and do non-socialist things. Nobody ever lies!
The problem really is you’re trying to say “socialism bad”, without interrogating why you think that, or that you assume the excesses and horrible things that happened under socialism are a result of their ideology while ignoring that the exact same things happen under capitalism. Like I’ve seen people claim the Holodomor is a genocide when the Great Hunger in Ireland or the Bengal Famine in India aren’t, when the actions that the Soviets took in the Holodomor are almost identical to those taken by the British government in Ireland and India.
And yes, there are absolutely people doing apologia for socialism in the same way – anyone who speaks out over Palestine but then downplays the treatment of the Uyghurs in China is doing the same thing in the opposite direction.
