Well, there teaser out, at least. But at this point, you do have to wonder what the hell they’re doing.

I assume it’s mostly an effects thing, but I’m sure they’re also aware that a publicity campaign around Ezra Miller isn’t going to be an easy sell anytime soon.

But at this point, you do have to wonder what the hell they’re doing.

This is in bad faith because it implies that the producers themselves know what they’re doing and it’s been proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that they haven’t a fucking clue.

WB must be regretting hiring Ezra Miller now. He has turned into a PR nightmare.

Maybe they’ll reshoot the ending where a new actor takes over as the Flash so they can be done with him.

This is in bad faith because it implies that the producers themselves know what they’re doing and it’s been proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that they haven’t a fucking clue.

The executive producer’s main job is to know when to give a f**k and when not to give a s**t.

90% of the time, whatever it is, it’s a piece of crap. So they really just care about having enough material to trick enough people into seeing it when it opens. However, the internet has ruined a lot of that, so now we’re getting movies that are supposed to be bad so people will see them just to see how impossibly bad they are. With a low budget, you have a better chance making money from a cheap movie that is terrible than one that is actually good. Though some actually funny bad movies sneak in there like Velocipastor and Wolf Cop, there are plenty more sharknados and birdemics. I’m convinced though there are distribution companies that buy what are originally passable low budget movies and then re-edit them to make them much worse. At the same time, what this gives the filmmaker is the chance to make something cheap enough that they can retain an ownership interest and actually profit from the franchise potential.

So, maybe Warner-DC & Co. is wondering why spend all this time and money trying to make something good when the basic principles of filmmaking and production dictate it will almost certainly not be good.

“This might just be a crazy idea, but – hear me out – what if The Flash could be our Sharknado?”

“Let me get this straight. You’re suggesting we take a couple hundred million dollars…”

    “Yeah.”

“And use it to make the kind of movie other people would put on their credit cards?”

    “Exactly!”

    “That sounds like… Genius!”

Stop trying to make good movies from the outset. Just make bad movies on purpose and nobody will be disappointed.

I’m sure they came to that conclusion already with Legends of Tomorrow on TV. Coincidentally, it became compelling viewing at just around the point they appeared to start making it bad on purpose.

Hey, at least he didn’t assault anyone on live TV.

No but seriously, whatever, bar fights happen literally all the fuckin time, no one would give a shit if he wasn’t a celebrity.

That said, it looks like he has some issues (seems like alcoholism?) and could use some sort of help, so I hope he gets it at some point before he does something REALLY stupid.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #89213

He’s not exactly as fundamentally linked to the character in the public consciousness as, say, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine or Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. He is absolutely a ticking PR time bomb, though. At this point I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want to recast as soon as they legally can. Probably depends on just how much of his movie is already done.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #89214

Oh no, recasting is not an option, I’m pretty sure they’ve finished shooting the movie for a while now… also, Ezra plays at least two versions of Barry, so that would probably also make it more difficult. At this point they might as well just shelve it.

  • #89225

I feel like WB has invested too much into it to shelve it. It’s going to launch their whole version of a multiverse, it’ll feature Affleck’s final Batman appearance, the intro of Supergirl and Keaton’s return as Batman. At this point I’m sure they’re just hoping the latest delay in release will put enough distance between this incident that no one will care. Although WB should be trying really hard to get Miller into treatment ASAP. Dude does not seem okay.

That said, boy what a mess the production of this movie has been. 5 years of delays, dropping Ray Fisher after his allegations, and Ezra Miller just being a mess. If not for Keaton, they probably would have dropped this by now.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #89228

Like I said above, they could reshoot the ending where a new Barry Allen/Flash appears and takes over the roll. They may even be able to sprinkle via CGI appearances of the new one throughout the movie.

But really, if the movie does well, they will probably keep him. If the movie tanks, they let the character rest until they are ready to reboot it.

Honestly, with all the multiverse stuff, introducing a new Flash is quite feasible. Afterall, this happened:

  • #89230

All they need to do is have a quick reshoot to add a scene where Miller breaks the fourth wall and reminds the audience, “hey, it was only a non-sexual assault!”

Warner Bros. Discovery Exploring Overhaul of DC Entertainment

The new owners of all things Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are exploring an overhaul of DC Entertainment, multiple sources close to the situation told Variety.

It’s been less than a week since Discovery closed its $43 billion deal for WarnerMedia, joining one of the largest producers of reality programming with one of the most venerable entertainment brands under the new moniker of Warner Bros. Discovery. David Zaslav, the CEO of the combined companies, and top leadership have been toying with the idea of turning DC into its own solidified content vertical, the sources said.

The move would potentially affect DC feature film development in the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, streaming series at Warner Bros. Television, and the creative arm within DC proper — all in an effort to have the disparate elements more closely aligned in order to maximize the value of the superhero stable — one often seen as punching up against Marvel.

Before the merger closed, Zaslav vetted candidates with experience in creating and nurturing blockbuster intellectual property with a goal of potentially finding someone to serve as a creative and strategic czar similar to what Marvel has in Kevin Feige. One of those candidates included Emma Watts, a former top film executive at 20th Century Studios and Paramount, but it does not appear that Watts will take the job. One insider suggested that Zaslav was less interested in finding a creative guru and more eager to hire someone who had the type of business background needed to keep all the different factions at DC working more harmoniously.

Insiders say that Zaslav believes that the success of the merger, one that has left the company highly leveraged, will rest in no small part on unlocking the full potential of the DC Comics universe of characters. Discovery insiders believe that although DC has achieved cinematic success with recent films such as “Aquaman” and “The Batman,” it lacks a coherent creative and brand strategy. Discovery believes that several top-shelf characters such as Superman have been left to languish and need to be revitalized. They also believe that projects like Todd Phillips’ “Joker” are a shining example of how second-billed characters from the DC library can and should be exploited (Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is another example).

DC has started to figure out ways for its big screen films to inspire more streaming content — recent examples include the HBO Max show “Peacemaker,” which was a spinoff of “The Suicide Squad,” as well as an upcoming planned series on Colin Farrell’s The Penguin and Gotham City’s police force. But the company believes that DC must do more to grow its approach to comic book fare, including bolstering gaming. Under Walter Hamada, who took over DC Films from Jon Berg and Geoff Johns in 2018, the unit has achieved more consistency in terms of both the critical and commercial reception to the company’s movies. He is under contract until the end of 2023 and could play an important role in whatever Zaslav has planned.

Zaslav has pledged to find $3 billion in synergies in the newly merged company, a signal of how important cost cutting will be to Warners’ new owners. Mining DC’s library of characters could help control spending as Warner Bros. Discovery owns the underlying intellectual property, insiders say.

Upcoming DC Films projects include a sequel to Zachary Levi’s “Shazam,” a sequel to Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman,” the long-awaited franchise started “Black Adam” with Dwayne Johnson, and a third installment of Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman.”

    Nice snippet @todd

A rehaul/restructuring has been long overdue. Too many to blame starting with Jim Lee, who I felt knew better.

Do you think they will ever catch up with MCU? At least as far as quality content?

Marvel still has the Fantastic Four and the X-Men with all the potential spin-off properties so they still have some life left in them.

I think if WB/DC just bites the bullet and does a complete line wide reboot, that may be their best option. All previous movies and television shows can still be part of their “multiverse”, so they don’t really lose anything. It gives them a way to start fresh and do some better planning. It gives them a better focus to move forward.

  • #89722

Or stop playing with their dicks and get Cavill on a Superman movie ASAP! If there’s one thing Snyder does well is casting choices, no need to start re-casting everyone just yet. I really hope Zaslav is serious about it.

Do you think they will ever catch up with MCU? At least as far as quality content?

Well you know me, and as far as I’m concerned quality isn’t really an issue, sure some DC movies have been crap, but so have a lot of MCU movies… quantity though? Probably not, too late.

    A “solidified content vertical”?

    FUCK. OFF.

  • #89763

The lession they should take from The Batman is that it doesn’t have to be so fucking complicated. All you need to make a good movie is a villain who commits crimes and a hero who tries to stop it. You don’t have to reinvent characters, or make it really personal, or different or whatever.

So make a Superman movie like that. Brainiac wants to put Metropolis in a bottle. Superman stops him. Go!

  • #89968

You don’t have to reinvent characters, or make it really personal

That’s the lesson you’re taking away from a movie in which there was a huge subplot about how Bruce’s dad may have been involved in all of the crime and in Gotham’s downfall, and in which the plot becomes a Bruce’s quest for the truth about his father?

Honestly I don’t think all of that worked all that well in the Batman movie, I thought that part of the plot kind of sucked in fact (especially Alfred being blown up and all that), but… it’s in there.

So make a Superman movie like that. Brainiac wants to put Metropolis in a bottle. Superman stops him. Go!

I didn’t quite know where to put this, as it’s not news and it fits better into the film forum than in the random thread, but…
Well, it is in parts about Justice League, so I might as well put it here, I suppose.
I was wondering about where Joss Whedon’s career is at, and I read a Vulture piece from January that is based on a series of interviews with him. It gives other people’s version of what happened as well as his and I think it’s pretty fair in putting it all together without judging either side. It also analyses Whedon’s career pretty well and gives some insights into where his mind is at right now. I thought it was all quite interesting.

    https://www.vulture.com/article/joss-whedon-allegations.html

Also, his career is still in the gutter, it seems. It’ll be a while before we see any new work of his. Which is quite a shame. I do hope he’ll get a second chance at some point, and just do some indie movies or TV again.

  • #90385

Yeah, and there are a LOT of things in the article that are obvious asshole moves. But it also sounds like he’s working through a lot of that stuff, and hopefully comes out a better person at the end of it. But either way, the separating art from artist things comes in at that point. This fall from grace obviously needed to happen for him, but from this point on, I don’t mind him being an asshole. I’d still like to see more of his work.

Legends of Tomorrow Cancelled at CW – TV Line

The Waverider is being permanently grounded: Legends of Tomorrow has been cancelled at The CW after seven seasons.

Co-showrunner Keto Shimizu broke the news on Twitter: “Well, folks. It’s been an incredible run. However, the CW has let us know that there will be no Season 8 of Legends of Tomorrow. We are heartbroken, but also immensely grateful for the amazing work our cast, crew, and writers have contributed to the little show that could.”

Legends this season averaged 860,000 total weekly viewers and a 0.2 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), up in audience and steady in the demo versus its previous season. Out of the 19 dramas The CW has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 9 in total audience and trails only All American, The Flash and Superman & Lois in the demo.

I’m honestly surprised any CW show lasts beyond one season. Even their top rated shows have pathetic ratings compared to everyone else. Supposedly, the CW is up for sale and I’m sure if it does happen, there will be a complete and total revamp to the lineup. Some may live a bit longer during a transitional phase, but they are all in a terminal state.

  • #90842

So far, the only DC shows on the CW left will be Superman and Lois, Naomi and The Flash, and The Flash may be on its way out, too.

  • #90843

Superman and Lois is renewed for season 3, and deservedly so.

I swear I thought Flash was going to end this season, but it’s getting a truncated season 9, presumably it’s last.
Should’ve ended long ago. You keep hoping they will find that season one magic, just not going to happen.

Naomi could easily be renewed for a second season, and new owners can decide long term.

Batwoman and Legends getting the axe make me think that none of the potential sale partners were interested, so why muddy the waters.
But can we get a couple of 2-hour TV movies to wrap up Legends? That’s not too much to ask for.

This is probably for the best: Wonder Twins Movie, Starring KJ Apa and Isabel May, Cancelled at HBO Max

HBO Max will not be activating The Wonder Twins‘ powers after all.
A made-for-streaming movie based on the iconic DC Comics duo is no longer in development, our sister publication Variety reports. Though a lot factored into the decision to cancel the project, budget was reportedly the principal concern; its $75 million price tag didn’t jive with Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s plan to eliminated $3 billion in costs following the company’s merger with Warner Bros.

The movie was announced just over a month ago, set to star KJ Apa (Riverdale) as Zan, an alien with the ability to transform into form of water, and Isabel May (1883) as Jayna, his twin sister with the ability to transform into any animal. The Twins also have a pet space monkey named Gleek, but that role had not yet been cast.

Zan and Jayna have appeared in many forms over the years, both in comic books and animated series, but live-action iterations have been rare. One instance found David Gallagher (7th Heaven) and Allison Scagliotti (The Vampire Diaries) playing them in a Season 9 episode of Smallville, while characters by those names also appeared in a Season 1 episode of The Flash.

At this point, WB really needs to find their Kevin Feige. They desperately needs someone to take over control of all DC properties. (And no, that person isn’t Zack Snyder. He had his shot.) They need to draw a line in the sand and say from this point, we move forward as one. Theatrical, television, and streaming projects all share the same universe. Everything else is multiversal Elseworlds.

I honestly think the upcoming Flash movie could be a great place to put a bow on what has happened before and provide a fresh start. From what little has been revealed, it could be used as way to a “crisis” to unify everything and provide a new starting point. They may have to change the ending and maybe add some other scenes. It would allow them to cherry-pick what they want to keep for the main universe and call the rest alternate Earths. (It would also allow them to get rid of Ezra Miller, because they seem like they will be a continuing problem.)

I’m not sure who they could get to run things but they desperately need someone. The DC characters have the potential to be a huge revenue source for WB and they’re just leaving money on the table at this point. I think people still have enough goodwill towards the IP that they’d watch the product if they felt there was a forward direction.

And no, that person isn’t Zack Snyder. He had his shot.

Did he have his shot though? But nah, he ain’t the person, nor should he be, even if he were asked to do it, I’d rather he keep doing movies… plus fuck WB after the way they treated him. Wouldn’t mind seeing a MoS2 from him though.

Also, yes, they need someone to oversee DC as a whole, but not a Feige clone, because the last thing we need is more MCU shit… they need someone with a plan, but a different one.

I agree 100% they should have a different plan from Marvel. Big picture and high level though, they should look at Marvel’s successes and failures as to what can be embraced and avoided. Good and bad for Marvel may be the opposite for DC, as their characters are a bit different in nature.

They definitely need their own plan and direction for movies, TV, and streaming. They should be determining the overall vision and tone for their universe. I would figure out what needs to be done on the macro and micro levels to differentiate DC from Marvel so even though they’re still “superhero” projects, they will provide a different but enjoyable experience.

But to be honest, I really do not have a lot of confidence in them right now. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is trying to cut costs and from what I’ve read in other places, he doesn’t seem to grasp the revenue potential for DC projects.

I think we all know what’s really going on here. HBO is prejudiced against space-monkey actors, and is cancelling opportunities for them.

One movie I would like to see in the future from DC is Shazam v Black Adam. I would geek out so hard watching Zachary Levi’s good natured Big Kid take down Dwayne Johnson’s impossibly muscled badass.

Then they can go forward into happy lighthearted DC Universe. That is the one thing they can copy from Marvel: humor.

Introduce a movie version of Green Arrow. In the comics, he is the one that always ran his month and in the DC universe, his goofy arrows could work better in a less realistic brighter universe. Make him the opposite of the dark violent Hawkeye(also the dark violent Stephen Amell version). He is a bit of a joke standing next to Superman and Wonder Woman and he knows it but his gadget arrows do save the day occasionally. but don’t make him the star or the lead of the film just a part of the ensemble. Maybe have Shazam recruit him because Billy thinks GA’s trick shots are just SO COOL.

Correct because he’s a film director, Feige is a manager, maybe the equivalent of a TV showrunner. I can’t say every step he’s made is correct but the Marvel vision is there compared to the DC ‘bit of a mess’.

Some of the Warner DC films have been very good, some not so much, but apart from a brief period basically copying the MCU model and announcing 20 movies that didn’t happen they seem quite directionless. See The Flash as an example I had genuinely forgotten, as a comic fan, that it was being made.

And if Ezra Miller weren’t a hot mess, none of us would remember there was a Flash movie in the works.

    Standard US TV bollocks:

“Write a finale with a cliffhanger.”

    “We’re not getting cancelled then?”

    “No.”

    A short time later:

    “You’re getting cancelled.”

From a commercial perspective a complete story is a better sell than an incomplete one.  Yet they keep doing this crap.

As to how to make DC distinct from Marvel – that they already have.  The DC films we have do place superpowers front and centre in a way Marvel doesn’t

The Legends and Batwoman cancellations are slightly unusual in that the network wanted to keep them going; the only reason they were cancelled was that Warners didn’t want to keep paying the rent on the studio where they were filmed.

10 Things That Never Made Sense About The 1966 Batman Movie

That show was my first exposure to Batman as it was with everyone else.

Then I read a reprint of the first issue, his childhood trauma and it still has me wondering
how someone could make such a setting a campy TV show?

Still, it was reported and confirmed that the TV show at that time helped to save Batman as a character so there is that…

Soooooo I watched the first 1 1/2 hours of the Snyder Justice League (yes, I am watching this in installments). And yep, it’s pretty fucking boring stuff. Some nice battle scenes that are new, but beyond that, nothing that shouldn’t have been cut. The dialogues are just the most bland and expositionary you can imagine, and everything character development is driven home with a sledgehammer.
