Mystery surrounds lost German sea data station
    .
A massive environmental monitoring station off Germany’s Baltic coast has disappeared from the seabed, baffling police and researchers.
    .
The seabed “observatory”, worth about €300,000 (£270,000), weighed more than half a tonne. It could not have been dragged off by a storm, tide or large animal, German experts say.
    .
Divers only found a torn power cable at the site, 22m (72ft) down and 1.8km (1.2 miles) offshore.
    .
It is a prohibited area, north of Kiel.
    .
No boats – not even local fishing boats – are allowed into the area, called Eckernförde Bay, about 70km (44 miles) south of the Danish border.

Officials advised the family to leave their home while it was cleaned to avoid the biohazard.

I don’t understand how it can have 720 genders. It’s non-sentient, so they are presumably talking about purely physical differences. But it reproduces asexually, by cell division, so how can it have any sex-based differences? From my limited knowledge of biology, the article’s claim makes no sense.

A true mature slime mold is one gigantic cell–easily visible to the naked eye. Unlike what we typically think of as a cell, however, a smile mold ‘cell’ consists of cytoplasm with millons of nuclei. When it comes time to reproduce, a stalked fruiting body is produced which releases spores into the air. These spores develop into sex cells.

Slime molds make sex cells that are only one size (isogamous); when size is the same, other features determine cell sex. In slime molds, it’s three genes, matA, matB, and matC (all of which contain variants) that are responsible for determining sex.

A mature individual has two copies of every gene and is capable of producing 8 types of sex cells. When one counts all the different combinations of variants of matA1-13, matB,1-13 and matC1-3 available, you get more than 500 potential different sexes!

For successful reproduction, a spore must simply find a partner that has different variants of the three genes. What makes slime molds truly successful, however, is that the cytoplasm of the offspring is merged from both parents. How’s this work? Mitochondria are only inherited from one parent; there’s a hierachy within the variants of matA.

I won’t pretend to actually understand any of this though. My knowledge of biology is as limited as can be.

ONE MILLION CANNIBAL ANTS TRAPPED IN SOVIET NUCLEAR BUNKER HAVE ESCAPED

    .
A “colony” of up to one million cannibal ants trapped in a nuclear bunker for years have escaped, scientists in Poland have said.
    .
The ants, which had no food source other than their dead nestmates, were first discovered in 2013 were found to be solely made up of worker ants meaning they could not reproduce—how their numbers grew so large was a mystery.
    .
    –SNIP–
    .
The ants had no access to the outside world and appeared to have come from a nest above that was positioned over a ventilation pipe. When the ants fell down the pipe, they were entombed in the bunker.
    .
However, after returning to the site two years later, scientists found the colony was not only still there, but that it had grown in numbers. This was despite there being no obvious food source, no heat and no light. A population estimate suggested there were hundreds of thousands, if not one million ants living in the bunker.
    .
“The survival and growth of the bunker ‘colony’ through the years, without producing own offspring, was possible owing to continuous supply of new workers from the upper nest and accumulation of nestmate corpses,” the team concluded. “The corpses served as an inexhaustible source of food which substantially allowed survival of the ants trapped down in otherwise extremely unfavourable conditions.

A New Zealand man accidentally bought 1,000 chickens online for $0.96

But Morrow, who manages a bed and breakfast called Koromatua Homestead in Hamilton, New Zealand, was only looking for “a couple more” hens as he already had 10 on his property that provided eggs for his guests’ breakfasts.
    .
He said he misread the ad, thinking he could put in a bid and take as many or as few of the hens as he wanted. Morrow initially put in a bit for $NZ10.50 ($6.70) and by Sunday morning he discovered that he had actually won the auction for $NZ1.50 ($0.96).
    .
The seller, Matthew Blomfield, later spoke to Morrow and asked him about what he planned to do with 1,000 hens.
    .
“I was stunned, shocked, and speechless,” Morrow said.

‘Startled pig’ hinders water pipe repairs and causes train disruption

A “startled pig” confronted engineers as they repaired a burst water main in London, before it was coaxed away with a bag of crisps.

The pipe burst in Lamberts Road, Surbiton, damaging nearby railway equipment, which caused train delays.

Thames Water said the valve to cut the water was in a field occupied by a pet pig called Pickle and engineers were concerned about disturbing it.

It is not known what flavour crisps were used to entice the pig away.

Not so much weird as moronic.

Utah Woman Charged With Lewdness After Being Topless In Her Own Home

A Utah woman has been charged with lewdness in her own home after her stepchildren walked into the room and saw her bare chest.

Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah argued this week that the statute under which Tilli Buchanan, 27, was charged is unconstitutional, and they have asked a judge to drop the charges against her and change the state law. Buchanan and her husband had been installing drywall in the garage and had taken off their shirts that were itchy from the fibers, she told The Salt Lake Tribune.

When her stepchildren, aged 9, 10 and 13, walked in, she “explained she considers herself a feminist and wanted to make a point that everybody should be fine with walking around their house or elsewhere with skin showing,” her lawyers wrote in court documents, The Associated Press reports.
Now the state has charged Buchanan with three charges of lewdness involving a child. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor. Though her husband was similarly clad, he was not charged with a crime.

The state’s lewdness statute criminalizes exposure of “the female breast below the top of the areola” in the presence of a child in a private place “under circumstances the person should know will likely cause affront or alarm.”

If convicted, Buchanan faces imprisonment, fines and the requirement to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

“It was in the privacy of my own home. My husband was right next to me in the same exact manner that I was, and he’s not being prosecuted,” she told reporters after the court hearing. The charges were filed after the children’s mother told that authorities she was “alarmed” by the incident, according the AP.

Maybe not quite as clear cut as the headline suggests (but then what is) but still, it feels like an over-reaction and the step-mother being punished by the mother via the courts.

    https://www.scotsman.com/news/people/scottish-fish-farm-rejected-after-campaigners-warn-fishermen-could-be-lured-to-their-deaths-by-fairies-1-5079509

Controversial fish farm plans were rejected – after campaigners warned fishermen could be lured to their deaths by fairies in the deepest part of the ocean.

Ancient folklore was cited as a reason for planners to turn down an application to build a 12-cage salmon farm at a magical site off the coast of the Isle of Skye.

The letter raised concerns about the fate of the mystical ‘ashrai’ – a sea fairy similar to a mermaid – which it was claimed have lived off the coast of Skye for 1,000 years.

Once a century, the mystical creatures are said to be drawn to the surface of the water to bathe in moonlight.

But campaigners claim the sea sprites ‘fear for their lives’, and that the cages would draw the fairies to the surface of the sea, causing them to melt.

And a stark warning was issued that workers’ lives could be put at risk by the creatures, who could ‘lure them with promises of gold and jewels into the deepest part of the ocean’.

Coronavirus: Armed robbers steal hundreds of toilet rolls in Hong Kong

Armed robbers in Hong Kong made off with hundreds of toilet rolls worth more than HKD1,000 ($130; £98).

Toilet rolls are currently in short supply in Hong Kong due to shortages caused by panic-buying during the coronavirus outbreak.

Knife wielding men robbed a delivery man outside a supermarket in the Mong Kok district, police said.

Police have arrested two men and recovered some of the stolen loo rolls, local media reports said.

The armed robbery took place in Mong Kok, a district of Hong Kong with a history of “triad” crime gangs, early on Monday.

According to local reports, the robbers had threatened a delivery worker who had unloaded rolls of toilet paper outside Wellcome Supermarket.

An Apple Daily report said that 600 toilet paper rolls, valued at around HKD1,695 ($218; £167), had been stolen.

Stores across the city have seen supplies massively depleted with long queues when new stock arrives.

Despite government assurances that supplies remain unaffected by the virus outbreak, residents have been stocking up on toilet paper.

Other household products have also seen panic-buying including rice, pasta and cleaning items.

Face masks and hand sanitisers are almost impossible to get as people try to protect themselves from the coronavirus, which has already claimed more than 1,700 lives.

“A delivery man was threatened by three knife-wielding men who took toilet paper worth more than HK$1,000 ($130),” a police spokesman said.

Authorities blame false online rumours for the panic buying and say supplies of food and household goods remain stable.

There has also been some panic-buying of toilet rolls, hand sanitisers and face masks in Singapore, which has 75 confirmed coronavirus cases.

A podcast I listen to was just talking about hockey’s Emergency Backup Goalie rule recently: if a team’s goalie and substitute goalie are both injured, then anyone in the building can be brought on as a backup. There’s someone in the crowd at every NHL game they can call on, but it’s only ever happened once in history, until yesterday:

Emergency backup David Ayres makes eight saves – and NHL history – with win for Hurricanes over Maple Leafs

    Close, it was the third.

Ayres became just the third emergency goaltender in the modern era to play in the NHL

He was a local guy and had Toronto gear on underneath his Carolina jersey

“No disrespect to Davy, awesome guy,” Auston Matthews said after the game. “But when you have an emergency goalie like that come into the game, I think the consensus is to shoot the puck as much as possible.”

I meant the guy being called from the stands. One of the times the equipment manager did it, as it was just a few seconds left.

Hopefully after they got the kids out of the pool, they weren’t trapped in a part of the Internet the size of Ireland

There’s no real evidence for it, but it is scientific fact.

In all seriousness, that prosthetic could have belong to Jaz North after he was splatted in a noncebeating and  wound up quadispazzed and on a lifeglug.

A man brought a llama in a tuxedo to his sister’s wedding, and the photo of her unamused expression is going viral
