Cheers guys.

Raised £18,905 over 5 campaigns which isn’t bad for a first time writer.

Now none of that is actually profit😆

I’ve spent £20,000 of my own money just getting the book made.

The hardest thing is getting your work out there. I haven’t submitted to many anthologies but have I do have some scripts in the can just waiting for the right artists.

I never want to release an issue 1 without the inks complete for the whole arc/ story

To often we never see an issue 2 or a run isn’t completed.

If I continue to self publish I want folks to know they can rely on me and the story’s in the bag.

The other side of this is people wait to the last issue to save on postage and I can’t really blame them for that!

I know some of you are aware but I thought I’d let you know that my Kickstartered comic series THIS LAND (think Moana meets the X-Men) was picked up by scholastic for exclusive graphic novel global rights and is being launched in New Zealand and Australia this October.

Boy could I tell you stories about those NZ right wing nut jobs.

Unfortunatly in a country with only 5 million people the press there is fuelled by click bait journailsm.
They spent the last 12 months tearing Jacinda to bits over her actions with covid.

They give the smallest nut jobs mile and miles of ink just to get clicks

Fortunatley the public saw right through that and she won in a landslide at the election.

The NZ National party (see Republicans /Torries) tried to use the trump playbook and fell flat on their faces.

My brother and his wife are moving back from San Francisco to NZ  with their daughter as they have zero faith in a vaccine being distributed fairly and successfully across the popultation.

Sitting here in Scotland and honestly wondering if we shouldnt do the same.

Sorry I havent been more active as Im trying to sort my back/comics/kickstarter life out!

All 5 issues are complete

issue2 coloured

issues 3/4/5 need colours and letters.

 

I’m shopping it about a few publishers at the moment and have been approached by a couple (whom I’ve turned down)

it can be split into 2 parts or as 1 trade 130 pages

Weighing up doing a Kickstarter in February for the first 50 pages

I’ve signed with a U.K. graphic Novel agent to sell the foreign publishing rights and in talks with a New Zealand publisher as well

covid has slowed the cash flow down so it’s been a bit hard to get along as quickly as I had hoped.

But overall the story came out great.

I’ve lettered the last 4 issues so the whole thing can be read (albeit in Black and White)

okay, so I read Excalibur 11 and then had to go back and re-read Excaliburs 9 and 10 as I was completely lost.

 

Spoilerssssss.

apologies I forget what the tags are its been too long.

What was the point of issue 10? Absolutely nothing. I fail to see how an issue dedicated to Jamie’s spin-off reality adds any value at all to the storyline. A whole issue.

What is the point?

Yes yes “keep reading” but there isn’t a hint at what the payoff could be.

4 new captain Britains from alternate universes. All attacking the omniverse in issue 12 from different angles maybe?

But it’s just not that interesting. Gambit stealing a gem (obviously the high lord Candra’s) is something but that’s probably being reserved for X of Swords EDIT: this happened in issue 11.

 

Again this series feels like its treading water without adding much.

Issue 10 could have been summed up in 2 pages.

I don’t need to see an alternate reality Betsy & Rachel Summers have a bonding moment.

They aren’t real so who gives a toss.

This is verging on Chuck Austen levels of dreg,

Whilst I certainly have not enjoyed Excalibur there is some worldbuilding and consequences going on there that will impact Xof Swords.

So it’s technically a must read regardless of quality.

Fallen Angels 1-6

It has zero impact or consequences on the line overall and is a terrible portrayal of supporting cast members who act out of character.

I own all 6 issues and it is frankly impossible to finish reading.

I don’t say these things out of spite but sadness at how disappointing the series is

There’s certainly a tonal issue with her writing Bernadette .

You could substitute any character in there and not be able to tell the difference as to who’s speaking.

I’ll be honest none of her work particularly captures me. It’s all very paint by numbers.

It’s been very interesting to see what types of books are landing with who and what the demand and desire is amongst people. We only have a small sample size here but it’s always interesting to see the choices people make with their disposable income and what they are passionate about and what’s working in the market place.
For me, the most interesting thing about Excalibur was how it developed Rictor’s powers and his relationship with Apocalypse. in saying that the remainder of the book was very loose and didn’t capture me so we are talking 4 pages out of 120 over 6 issues. That’s a big problem and led to me dropping it.
Marauders had more happening and more potential but as it isn’t really arc-based and more of an ongoing with no end in sight I dropped it due to lack of answers.
I think everyone is in the same boat about Fallen Angles which is kinda Yikes and will not be remembered as contributing anything to X-Lore and Krakoa.
New Mutants by Hickman = rollicking space-faring fun bonus points for Magik giving zero F*£%’s plus establishing The Shiar’s current political status which is always important to the X-Line
New Mutants by Brisson = Villian of the week Human hate group and experienced young mutants falling into obvious cliche traps when they shouldn’t be. Pass
X-Men by Hickman same single-issue setups and pattern as Fantastic Four and Avengers for the first dozen stories. Momentum building and a New World is being explored. Sticking with it,
Wolverine. I’ve heard it’s the first issue is very good but I get plenty of Logan elsewhere so passed
X-Force. Again tried the first 6. Not really a fan of villains who are basically Crime Syndicate U-Men. Xavier’s death/ resurrection wasn’t really a shock as I felt it was unearned and no real build up in tension. The last few issues were good but its not an X-Force team I recognised.
Beast having to make big moral decisions seems to be against type as he was resolute and stood against Cyclops during the Schism and hated the idea that X-Force was activated. I understand that afterwards, he made the error of retrieving the original 5 from their past timeline but at the end of that run, he seemed to have learned his lesson. Beast in charge of Krakoa’s ‘CIA” doesn’t make sense. Cyclops or Bishop perhaps but not Beast.
Also aside from Domino and Wolverine, the team isn’t really my X-Force. Forge in the background maybe but Jean, Quinton, Colossus no way. Colossus isn’t in the same place he was after the Pheonix 5 saw him join Cables X-Force. X-Force should be hardcore black ops dark dingy and morally corrupt mutants. but that’s my 2 cents.
In thinking about what made me really love the X-men originally for me it was all about the interweaving team dynamics and relationships. The exploration and development of individuals powers. Not everyone needs to be an Omega mutant but using their abilities in new and interesting ways was always a key draw for me. We all have those favourite stories or moments when mutant x used his power to defeat villain Y in an unexpected way. That’s the sort of stuff I think I’m after.
After initially being quite annoyed at Young Cable I’m very interested to see what Duggan and Noto have in store for him especially with the teased relationship with all 5 cuckoos.
Son of Cyclops and the Daughters of the White Queen. Jesus that’s got melodrama written all over it and Duggan has the track record with Old Cable to pull it off.

Lastly “Bring back Caliban!”
An obvious add to X-Factor who are supposed to be investigating mutant deaths.

So I’ve gone down a bit of a rabbit hole over the last week and a half and joined up with the Marvel Legends Uk Collectors groups over on Facebook.

I had intended to sell off a whole heap of old Toybiz marvel legends from 2006/2007 and dump all my Funko pops to get some cash flow and iI completely fucked up and spent a tonne of money.

Trying to put together 90’s X-Force and uncanny x-force and I must admit having a blast doing it. even repainted an old Psylocke in her uncanny colours and didn’t do a terrible job for my first mod!

The title is already causing ruffles amongst Scottish Indy comics twitter.

Today sees Savage Avengers 0 with Gerry Duggan writing Kid Cable chatting with Dr Strange and I’m sold. The art by Greg Smallwood is particularly solid. He’s drawn Kid Cable perfectly. Not as a whiney skinny teen but as a solid early 20’s solider.

Well. Looks like someone’s paying attention.

 

It’s concerning that we are 4-5 issues in on some books and not seeing a coherent or focused plan for what’s happening.

The biggest scare for me is the example of how Apocalypse is portrayed in X-men vs Excalibur.

If X-men is the lead book then ”A’s” portrayal and character arc in Excalibur basically means nothing.

Fallen Angels as I’ve said is a kwanon mini series and won’t add anything to the overall story.

X-Force is close to being something but again feels aloof from the main book.

New Mutants is being disrupted by good arc bad arc and different writers.

Marauders adds to the world building of the line but some people are finding character representation difficult to cling to.

 

My X-fandom is rooted in the 90’s and while you can say it wasn’t the strongest story telling at times you knew what each stories direction and where each book stands.

plus the connections made sense if Cyclops was kidnapped in one book x-force was sent in to get him.

there was a method to the madness.

I’m yet to see it here. Hopeful mind you but I’m probably dropping all but X-men and Cable at this stage.

Pretty sure Hellions is sinister’s team.

House of x powers of X hardcover is extremely well put together. Very glad to have double dipped on this. Last time I purchased an X hardcover was AvX

It’s been a bloody drought of X stuff for a very long time.

I refuse to add anything from the Bendis years or the abysmal Inhumans Vs X-Men to my trade collection. None of it adds any value  to the collection and I consider myself a bloody completist.

All finished now.

Didn’t mind it by the end of it.

Will watch season 2 but for my money The Dragon Prince is the best fantasy story on Netflix at the moment.

Yeah totally agree . It feels like it was trying to be clever for cleavers sake but it didn’t add to the narrative at all.

maybe a different type of colour grading would of helped over the past/future but with so many characters not aging it was a bit confusing at first and drew me out of the story.

Spending more time trying to figure out “when is going on” rather than connecting to the characters is very counterproductive.

Well it arrived and it’s fucking gigantic

I think trying to use different timelines in the story telling and introducing newbies like myself to this world has made it super convoluted.

We got to episode 4 and figured out what was going on but there isn’t clear enough definition from the time lines to make it clear. The missus has lost interest completely.

The HD glossy Netflix look isn’t great. You can pick apart cgi quite easily and the establishing shots are scattered and not up front.

The entirety  of episode one looks like its shot in a sound stage.

I want to like it. But I don’t.

We originally thought it was an anthology series with the story of Gerald being the through line and potentially it all coming together for the last episode. This would of been a much cleaner way to introduce it.

I‘m unsure where these stats of it being Netflix’s most watched show are coming from. Perhaps it was launched in a lull of releases.

I care when a character is stripped of everything they were known for and tossed into a shitty storyline where they don’t act or talk like themselves. That goes for all 3 of them. This is a stand-alone Kawanon limited series which nobody asked for. X-23 and Cable have significant fan bases and long running series and are basically there to serve as plot devices for Kawanons boring arse redemption story.
But agree this steaming pile of turd should never of seen print.

in Despicable Deadpool Duggan introduced a world in 2084 where Apocalypse weaponised global warming and killed off most of the planet.

Penn station was surrounded by vampires and turned into a safehouse for the multi verse of Cables from various timelines.

I would be shocked if this didn’t come into play at some point.

 

In Duggan I trust.

He nailed Cable in Uncanny Avengers and his Deadpool run.

So Maruders 3: excellent. setting up a nice little hellfire war with the chess pieces being put into place. Great characterisation and spot on voices

X-Men 3: Okay so hickman is going down his Avengers/FF route here with one shots building up protaganists in this new world unlike the original x-villians. By issue 12 we will start to see how the cards are being laid out and all the little interactions and motivations will steer towards something of certainty. After issue 2 I really hope its all about Apocalypse and the origianl Horsemen.

 

Excalibur: Not for me. I had planned to get 6 single issues of each before going to trade but I’m dropping this like a damp fish.

Gambit, Jubilee and Captain Betsy are not speaking to me in a voice I recognise. Not even a last page suprise appearance can make me come back for issue 4.

He has to be at least 20 thats my main problem. Pulling him out of the timeline earlier doesn’t fit but hes drawn as a teenager.

I have faith in Hickman.
Not a fan of Fallen Angles though and agree with rocket on that hes not ready to be in a death squad yet
