We live in a twilight world.

And there are no friends at dusk.

It’s strange how I thought that I liked this film after the first viewing but knew that I really needed a repeat to be sure. So I’ve since watched it again (and read the screenplay) and I definitely like it. The score is great, the action is very good, I like the cast. Thinking about inversion for too long can hurt my head but I’d rather have a blockbuster that will let me think about it (if I want to), especially if it’s the only summer movie of the year.

I would guess that I only heard 80% of the dialogue on my first viewing. On my second I think that I heard more, but I wonder if my brain was correcting what I heard because I had read the script? It’s also possible that cinemas have fiddled with the sound settings now that the film has been out for a few weeks. Unfortunately my second viewing didn’t give me the punch in the gut that my first viewing had, I think that they were a notch too quiet. If they had been playing Dunkirk at that volume instead, I would have complained.

It’s pretty much just You’re Next but without the creativity or cleverness.

Interestingly enough, I preferred The Hunt. I was impressed with the staging of the crunchy fight scenes and found the protagonist to be unique and compelling. I don’t want to get into spoilers but I found the reasons given for the hunt itself more interesting in this movie, though that really is down to personal taste.

I also noticed some really overdone color-correcting in PL. It’s garishly blue in a lot of places. I’m a little confused how it won a best cinematography Oscar.

It was a very early apology for the fact that the DP would end up working on Dolittle in the future.

Holy crap! I think that you’ve just broken Bat-comics for me. Wow.

I saw Bloodshot today, having never read a single comic featuring the guy (I think that I read an FCBD issue by Lemire but that was only a few pages), so my preconceptions were pretty nonexistent besides the general look and design of the character (which is not how Vin Diesel looks). So overall I had a good enough time with it. I’d say that they utilised the budget well since most of the effects look sharp and stylised in a cool way. Saying that, one climactic fight looks like we’re watching pre-vis footage at times. If you complained about Terminator Dark Fate then I expect some harsh words for this single scene. Outside of that the action is a mixed bag, choppy and obscuring camerawork reducing the enjoyment in some scenes, only for us to get strong visuals and effective slo-mo shots at other times.

I am left with many questions regarding how any of this stuff compares to whatever happens in the comic books, and I’m glad that I forgot most of the trailer because they showed far too much. It remains to be seen if the film is just as forgettable.

Presumably this thing is getting bad reviews, and I’m not particularly interested in owning the film on home video or seeing it again in the cinema. Yet this must be weighed against Guy Pearce looking like he came out of a Metal Gear game, Toby Kebbell getting a genuinely fun moment, Eiza Gonzalez committing, and no other Vin Diesel films coming out anytime soon. Anyway, I’m interested to see what everybody else thinks. Is anybody who reads the Valiant stuff intending to watch this?

I’m glad that Yaz is sticking around and the increased development and deeper interplay between her and the Doctor that we will potentially get to see. I just wonder if Chibnall and co will view it as a gap and add another companion to the mix? I kind of hope not, fully onboard for two girls roaming. Plus if Ryan and Graham exit in a similar fashion to Martha and still pop up in the odd episode it might be the best of both worlds.

I did enjoy the finale and have high hopes for the next special considering that the previous Dalek episode is probably still my favourite episode so far for this Doctor. Any ideas how the prison break aspect will fit into it? If the Doctor has has her sonic screwdriver in her pocket will she make it out before the main titles?

  • #15753

I was a bit behind with the show (and consequently the thread) but I’m all caught up now.

This latest episode was quite enjoyable, despite the unanswered questions (similar to Fugitive of the Judoon in that regard). I really appreciated the scale of it all and the lone cyberman is still a good villain. The Doctor was getting angry with her companions again, but I suppose it’s understandable if she’s thinking back to Bill. Jodie definitely seems to bring it in those scenes, and there’s a massive contrast to how friendly and nice this Doctor is trying to be in general.

Let’s face it. We were all thinking of Superman during the Ireland stuff, right? At least up until the lack of aging for the other people there, and now it looks most likely as a simulation?

Also, are Time Lords actually just humans all along? Is that where we’re heading with this?

  • #14712

The YouTube videos are still obscuring text written beneath them.

The site doesn’t seem to be freezing on my phone anymore, so that’s definitely an improvement.

    But Dave, mobile phones suck.

I would have liked to see Tarantino’s face. I am happy that Parasite won (going to see it tonight, finally), but this should have been Tarantino’s year really, and I would think that he would have expected it to be?

To be fair, it must soften the blow to know that Parasite won the top prize at Cannes and at the Oscars (which actually hasn’t happened for a long time). I actually haven’t heard him talk about Parasite, but I’m presuming that he likes it. It’s not like Green Book beat him to the prize.

Saying that though, will Oscar glory be something that he takes into consideration when deciding on what his tenth (and final) film actually is? I would guess that a Kill Bill sequel has become less likely now.

  • #14492

I thought this movie was fun. I wasn’t fully onboard at points, but the cumulative effect won me over. I can finally say that Margot is a good Harley, and I really enjoyed whatever the heck Ewan McGregor was doing.

The action really popped, especially for a film that is as close to a comedy as these DC movies have seemingly come. Turns out the second-unit director is Chad Stahelski and suddenly those fun sequences make sense, with the police station raid possibly being the highlight.

Oh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was great as Huntress. I loved what they did with her, with lots of moments to make you think of Kill Bill. It made me wish that we’d gotten her own movie, honestly.

  • #14413

Wow. I think that actually makes up for Green Book winning last year. Though I am sad about the lack of Quentin speeches. Still, props to Bong Joon-ho. Going by his speeches, he’s going to be drinking for quite a while.

  • #13866

Did it remind anyone else of Global Frequency? I got a strong Warren Ellis vibe off of this.

    You genius! I agree.

Also, can we get Warren Ellis to write an episode of Doctor Who?

Hey, remember when Grant Morrison wanted to write one?

  • #12328

Okay, so 1917 did work well for me. I liked it very much, with some big spectacle and big emotions going hand in hand. I would be perfectly happy with it winning Best Picture even though it’s not my first choice.

I was quite pleased to find that the film was immersive enough for me to stop comparing it to Dunkirk for the duration.

  • #12227

I predict a lot of movies about how great advanced artificial intelligence is and how it definitely doesn’t pose a threat to humanity.

You wouldn’t need an AI to tell me that it’s not worth greenlighting any more Terminator movies.

  • #12225

Just back from 1917. I thought it was incredible, very moving and difficult to watch in places, and also very cleverly made. One of the best films I’ve seen at the cinema in a long time.

I’m really hoping that I agree with you when I get to see this thing.

Well, I came here to say that I might have liked that the most out of the episodes this season so far. It looks like I am very much alone in that.

It definitely had problems but I was enjoying the interactions between the Doctor, the companions and even some of the new folk.

  • #11801

Hey y’all, I know I been away for a long minute (personal stuff that had to take priority these past few months), but I just had to break my silence in order to say that Underwater is a damn good B-Movie.

It’s nice to have you back, and to see your thoughts on this film. It looks like the UK has to wait until next month for it, but I’m okay to wait considering how stacked with releases this month is. Does the PG-13 rating water it down too much, or do the horror elements retain some weight?

I saw Seberg today, which is the Kristen Stewart movie that is actually out in the UK, and is a kind of drama/thriller based on the Breathless actress Jean Seberg’s time under surveillance by the COINTELPRO.

I enjoyed the movie, really liked Stewart in it, and thought that the rest of the cast was strong, all used in the right way so that nobody subtracted from the story or Seberg herself. It’s actually left me wanting to research the true story and see how much of the film was fabricated, since I’m sure that a couple of things were but I could be surprised and those are actually moments that are true.

I also want to watch some of Jean Seberg’s movies and revisit this later to see if it means more to me. Maybe not Paint Your Wagon though.

I saw Safe, the 2012 action movie starring Jason Statham. I remember the trailer for it was either on a dvd that I watched fairly often or a lot of films that I saw once, but it was nice to finally see this one. Pretty good action, better than expected direction, one killer action movie line, and a plot that never fully lives up to its initial promises. I enjoyed this a lot (maybe more than I should have) and I think that I’m finally becoming a Statham fan. After so many years of not liking the guy, what highlights have I missed?

I loved The Gentlemen. It is by default the best movie of the decade, and while that obviously won’t last, let’s see how long it remains at the top of my 2020 list for. Plenty of people are finding this movie offensive, but all I can say is that I laughed a lot. Hugh Grant was better here than he was in Paddington 2.

I haven’t seen the other cockney crime capers by Ritchie to compare this to, but I think it’s finally the push that I needed to watch them. Snatch is the best one, right?

  • #10141

You should really go and watch The Rise of Skywalker in IMAX to get that Tenet prologue.

I didn’t realise that Kevin Smith had a cameo in this one too.

Congrats to @jjabramsofficial on the #1 opening and for closing out the @starwars saga – and thank you for letting me be in the series of flicks that I fell in love with 42 years ago! Back when I had my heart attack, J.J. sent me an email that said “Live through this and I’ll put you in Episode 9!” When they went into production last year on #theriseofskywalker, I wrote J.J. and asked “So… I’m alive. That offer still good?” He confirmed and I flew out to England to visit @pinewoodstudios for a few days, during which time I giddily watched J.J. do his thing until I was called into action! Ducking Stormtroopers on Kijimi, Poe passes a cyborg walking beside a bundled-up local. That local is me! J.J. had me voice a Stormtrooper in #theforceawakens and then put me in Rise – two things a young Emo Kev never could’ve imagined happening while he fanned the flames of his fandom in the 70’s and 80’s! Thank you, my friend in the Force, for even making the offer in the first place, let alone following through on it! You gave me a rare sensation I haven’t had since I was an action figure collecting kid in 1983 when you let me come over to your house to play #starwars with you! #KevinSmith #jjabrams

And to follow up on news reports; it’s still not finished. Some of the cats weren’t really connected to the floor properly, with feet sliding around enough to be noticeable in a few shots, and even without shadows in some.

I wont be surprised if another update is sent out shortly.

I saw it last night, and mine didn’t appear to be the updated version, thankfully.

I noticed the digitally sliding feet quite a few times, and a lot of other stuff was strange enough to question whether it was done by design. I’m never going to watch this movie again, and it was thankfully shorter than I thought it was going to be, but a lot of the audience that I was with seemed confused after it had finished.

  • #9960

It was always implied by the movies too, which means the Skywalkers were all Palpatines too. So the whole saga is a big incestuous family orgy.

Hopefully they’ll use that subtitle for the big I-IX Blu-Ray boxset.

    https://screenrant.com/star-wars-rise-skywalker-jj-abrams-reveals-finn-secret/amp/

    Hooray!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held a screening of The Rise of Skywalker that included a Q&A session with Abrams. While Abrams didn’t officially confirm Finn’s secret during the Q&A, Twitter user kaila ren heard Abrams answer a fan’s questions after the session. He revealed that Finn wanted to tell Rey that he is Force-sensitive. Some may have thought Finn wanted to tell Rey he’s in love with her, but Finn and Rey have remained platonic throughout the trilogy.

  • #9787

Hey, did we ever find out what Finn was going to say to Rey? It gets brought up a few times but I don’t remember it ever being resolved.

  • #9766

Tenet looks terrific but that trailer is my least favourite part of the marketing so far. The teaser that they never officially released online was more intriguing, and have any of you seen the IMAX preview? I got it with my screening of Star Wars and loved it. I don’t know what’s going on during it, you can’t understand all of the dialogue, and the score is loud. What I’m saying is that it’s very much a Nolan movie and I’m really looking forward to it.

  • #9563

The other thing i thought to mention was I think they cut C3POs “Last look at my friends” line?  It’s obviously meant to happen right before they wipe his memory.  It also makes sense that they cut it because his memory gets rebooted like 30 minutes later so it loses any emotional punch.

Uh, correct me if I’m wrong but I thought that he did say that line, at the moment you mentioned.

I cannot do this because I was corrected because I was wrong.  I must have just forgot he said it.

Or … OR there is an “Australian Edit”!

    Maclunkey!

You’ll have to go back and watch it again just to make sure.

Okay so there’s really too much for me to process with this before I can say how I really feel about a lot of it. Overall I liked it, definitely didn’t love it. There’s a lot of good here, and some bad, but some of that becomes good by the end so hooray for that.

My biggest problems with it right now are the character developments moving on from The Last Jedi. You have Rey going back to thinking about her heritage even though she’d gotten over it in the last film. I can’t be disappointed with JJ doing what we all knew and expected him to do in terms of picking that plot line back up, it’s just that I don’t feel Rey would still be troubled about it. But saying that, it does form her arc and takes us to a nice end point, I’ m just wondering if it could have been approached differently.

I’m really interested to see how I feel about this after a rewatch or two, because I’m not sure where I’d place it in a ranking right now.

  • #9454

    George Lucas?

  • #7377

Alright, I haven’t been on here so much recently, and I’ve seen a lot of films in the cinema, so here’s a quick round-up.

The Irishman – Pretty good, I thought. I really enjoyed watching Al Pacino do his thing and the running time didn’t matter all that much to me in the end (besides making me reduce my fluid intake beforehand). There are some interesting discussions that could be had but they’re all in spoiler territory so I’ll leave it for now. The effects never pulled me out of the movie, meaning that they really worked.

Midway – This was a good time at the movies. I thought that it wouldn’t be very good and looked like a two/three pints down kind of movie, but I saw it sober and was pleasantly surprised. If any of the dialogue or inspirational speeches land, it is because of the experienced performers delivering them rather than the script. Also, the effects were pretty variable. A couple of breathtaking moments rub up against stuff that is so shoddy that it ruins moments that have been pitched to get an emotional reaction. To have the most fun with this you have to surrender to the PS2 aesthetic and go with the more arcadey moments. This movie sure isn’t Dunkirk but I enjoyed the battle stuff more than in most of Disney Star Wars. I left the theatre thinking about Red Tails a lot, and wondering how they would directly compare. Something worth mentioning that the marketing seemingly didn’t is that the point of view does shift to the Japanese at points and does show some of the frustrations and internal battles that their chain of command were having at the time. It was a much more balanced film than I expected, in a lot of ways.

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood: Extended Edition – Okay, so this is my favourite film of the year and the extended version doesn’t touch the main film at all but rather adds a few in-jokey fake adverts before the movie starts and has a couple of deleted and extended scenes after the final credits. Supposedly this is how the movie was playing at the New Beverly cinema anyway, and while you can’t match the level of immersion offered by seeing the film there, the fun additions are still fun and hopefully they all wind up on the blu-ray.

21 Bridges – Middling action thriller with a decent cast that sadly can’t elevate it. I felt myself check out around two-thirds in during yet another impersonal second unit setpiece and was only brought back around by an actor who I hadn’t heard was in this thing at all. When the Russo bros (producers here) said that we don’t see many movies like this one, I can only be glad.

Marriage Story – I thought that this was phenomenal, with a handful of terrific dramatic scenes that would be the best part of any other movie but in this one they just keep coming. It’s very funny too. Driver and Johansson deserve all of the award buzz. I’ve currently put it at number two in my 2019 list.

The Report – This was a well-packaged and informative film relating to the US torture program during the war on terror and the struggles that went into bringing it to light. The torture scenes are suitably horrible without showing gore or strong violence, it’s the threat that carries them through. Adam Driver does good work here and the script packs a lot in. It felt longer than it was but it goes by a whole lot faster than reading a 700-page report would.

  • #7227

The way that videos display on the page means that they actually hide any text that has been written underneath them in the same post. It’s something that I hadn’t seen happen before, so I guess that it’s linked to the changes that have been made across the board?

  • #6790

Yeah, Snyder’s preferred cut would likely be nearer to three hours, so if you remove all of the Whedon stuff that could be well over an hour of new footage. The promise was that it was going to be the Seven Samurai of superhero movies, and while I’m not asking for Kurosawa, I’d at least like to see some of Bruce’s epic journeys to try and convince the team to come together. After all, that was the reason that they killed Superman in the first place.

I agree that we’re never going to get the full thing without them putting a lot of work into it. Dropping the Danny Elfman score and getting Junkie XL to record a new one, for example. Obviously fixing and finishing all of the effects. I’ll be the first to watch this thing if it does ever come out, but I’d rather they release some glossy coffee table book with Terrio’s scripts for the two-parter and all of the concept art and storyboards that were created. Alternatively they could adapt them into comic books, but I’d hate for them to stick a run-of-the-mill d-list artist on something that’s supposed to represent a Zack Snyder movie.

  • #5973

Well, they didn’t give away the plot then did they?

I was actually going to say that I wish that I hadn’t seen this trailer because I feel like that’s almost the entire movie, and that it looks bad. They fixed the design but everything else is still a problem. Jim Carrey could be good, but the Sonic scenes still look bad to me.

  • #5795

Considering Lea Seydoux is in Death Stranding, it should easily win the “best looking” category.

  • #5769

How does it work if people do something illegal while using the VPN? If their data wasn’t secure or was being sold, wouldn’t there be cases that we would have heard of?

How did the rest of the weekend go for you, Matt?

Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, and 30 More Directors Pick Favorite Horror Movies

It’s a grab bag of quotes that various directors have made in interviews at different times about horror films that they love, or that really scared them, or that were relevant to a film that they made. Scorsese talks about one that Will recently reviewed in the watching thread, so that was cool to read.

Plus, who wouldn’t want to see Nic Cage giving a typically restrained performance as a man slowly going insane? :good:

That was certainly the draw for me and Cage didn’t disappoint. Does he ever?

  • #5403

Yeah it’s kinda funny how Terminator, Alien and Predator strated out as horror movies, then had a big succesful action movie for a sequel. And the three of them franchises share the same issues today. When you think about it, there’s little difference between the terminators, the aliens, the predators and creatures like Jason or Freddy… the only difference is Jason and Freddy are not sci-fi AND stayed in their horror lanes… I wonder what would’ve happened if the former 3 franchises had also stayed in the horror genre.

Never mind that. I’m too busy thinking about big-budget action sequels for Jason and Freddy.

  • #5161

It’s nice to see Marty speak for himself and promote actual discussion on the topic.

  • #5147

I went to my local multiplex for a screening of a surprise film, which turned out to be Le Mans ’66 (that would be Ford v Ferrari to everyone who isn’t in Europe), making it the first film that I’ve ever seen twice before its general release. I didn’t mind though and quite enjoyed watching it again. In fact, I don’t think that my overall opinion of it has changed much at all. Even though the second trailer is a bit of a dud, this film isn’t.

  • #5040

MGS5 is his best game. The combat is amazing.

While this is true when it comes to the gameplay and technical aspects, it’s not the most satisfying (actually being unfinished is part of it, but just the approach taken to the story in general). I’d put three Metal Gear Solid games over it without a second thought, and yes Peace Walker is one of them. Those Ashley Wood cutscenes, my god!

The Phantom Pain is full of awesome Birdman-style single-take cutscenes so it’s no wonder that it’s your favourite, Tim.

  • #5003

Hey, your review was great to read, and it shows that you have a lot invested in this franchise. I also thought that some of the action was shot with camera angles that were too tight, but by the end of the movie it either stopped bothering me or stopped altogether.

I also agree with the love for Grace and the thing that most disappoints me about this not performing well enough to get a sequel is the fact that we have this character and actor who could really stand out with more to do, but we’ll just have to imagine it for ourselves.

  • #4961

Well, Star Wars was never in danger of flopping.

    And yet, Solo did.

  • #4934

I liked Widows. Didn’t love it, but it’s good.

  • #4933

I agree that there have been a bunch of franchise restarts or IP relaunches that have disappointed. What’s the next one to be released? Possibly Charlie’s Angels. Any guesses on how that is going to do? They’re pitching it at female audiences pretty hard, as far as I can see.

Also, maybe you do need to write that paragraph, Tim. I don’t see any difference between the Force Awakens and Dark Fate in terms of its position in each respective franchise. They both use original actors playing beloved characters to try and pass the baton along and open up some room for future stories.

  • #4565

So are you saying that you’re ready for them to strip everything down again, like with Casino Royale? Or do you want ridiculous Moore antics? I’m not sure which way the pendulum will swing considering the core tenets of the series are so fixed.

  • #4559

I don’t want to make sweeping judgements based on a trailer but this isn’t what I was hoping for.

  • #4531

From the director of Under the Shadow, which was highly praised, but I’ve only heard not great things about this one. It’s a shame because I was looking forward to it based on the cast alone.

    Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal

As soon as this comes out in the UK I’m going to be all over it. I’m surprised that it has been submitted to the Academy Awards under the Best Animated Film category. I don’t know if that’s just all ten episodes (the second half is due to be released next year) stitched together, or is it just this first five?

  • #4188

The fights in Watchmen should’ve looked the way the fights in Greengrass’ Bourne movies do

Now you’ve reminded me that Greemgrass tried to make a Watchmen movie. What an interesting thing that would have been to see.

  • #4133

I don’t know when I’ve last seen a movie with such predictable “twists.”

    Into Darkness or Spectre, maybe?
I’d rather this have played predictably and actually be executed well than, like you say, be Terminator Genisys.

How would you rank all of the movies in the franchise then?

Also, I’m probably the only person here who sat through the credits (you haven’t missed any teasers, don’t worry) and towards the end of them they play the awesome Terminator theme and it’s been given a Mexican feel. I’d need to watch the film again but I don’t remember it playing during the movie at any point. I thought that it sounded cool anyway.

I’m not sure why that would be a big deal in the context of the movies. She’s killed loads of people, hasn’t she?

Just a few further thoughts that I’ve had:

    – Linda Hamilton really does a lot of heavy emotional lifting here, and I like that she gets an arc, even if she’s just a heavily supporting character. Like you said, Grace doesn’t quite get enough development or characterisation beyond the short flashbacks and her dedication to the mission.

    – Was anybody else thinking of Alita when we got the future war flashback? It just reminded me of the battle flashbacks in that film for some reason. Maybe I’m focusing too much on the Cameron involvement with both.

    – I love the opening shot, with the waves going back and forth, slowly revealing the skull under the sand.

    – It was very cool (and fairly subtle) to have “Carl” petting the dog without it barking. I love that it’s not commented on but Sarah obviously knows that it is significant.

I’m sure that there will be more things that come to mind later but really I’m just excited to go back (and hopefully watch it with a better crowd since I think that I was the only one who was laughing at fairly sparse number of jokes (I’m glad that they didn’t aim for a Marvel Studios approach with the humour)).

I’m glad that you liked it so much, Dave, considering how big a fan of the series you are. I obviously really like the first two, and if I ranked the series it would be like this:

    T2
    The Terminator
    Dark Fate
    Salvation
    Genisys
    Rise of the Machines

So obviously, yeah, this is the best Terminator movie since Cameron directed one and I have attribute to some of that to him being the producer here. I saw an interview where he said that he wanted to bring into the twenty-first century and they do achieve that with this one. The Mexico angle worked for me, and I love Grace being a supersoldier with cybernetic enhancements (and hope that we get more of her character in the future). People are only going to merge more and more with their technology, so it’s a cool direction to go. If they’re sending back more advanced Terminators then it makes sense to send back a more capable Kyle Reese. Although holy shit. I wonder what will happen to him in this new timeline?

I would say that this was my favourite Arnie performance since Judgement Day but it’s been too long since I watched the third movie to truly remember him there. You’re right that his character works a whole lot better than Genisys.

I think that for me, this movie ranges from okay to very good, so while it never hits an “amazing” like the first two movies I never felt like it dropped to that Genisys level (although that was okay some of the time). I’ll definitely be checking this out again in the cinema to see whether I like it even more. I’d definitely put it over The Force Awakens, and hope that we get the potential trilogy.

You know, my biggest problem was the reveal of Dani as the new messiah figure. In the moment, it felt too simplistic to keep hidden, but in retrospect I can see it as a Cameron storytelling. Sincere and streamlined. I’ll probably warm to it in future viewings, and it did make the emotional beats in the final fight really hit. “For John”.

I think that I might hate them.

  • #3797

I agree with Cameron here. It would be interesting to see him go back and forth with Ang Lee a little bit on this, maybe.

  • #3665

Hey, the reviews are out now. Some people like it and some don’t. Hopefully that clears everything up.
Bradshaw has done his review but I’m not going anywhere near that until I’ve seen the credits roll.

I remember seeing The Assassin in HMV a lot and not knowing anything about the movie, so I looked it up and saw that it seemed to be pretty highly regarded by critics when it was released.

Sight & Sound Top 20 Films of 2015: ‘The Assassin’ Slays the Competition, Beautifully

So I bought it. I haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure that I will.

Also, David you should check out Zhang Yimou’s Shadow. It came out here on dvd in September, but I saw it last year at the London Film Festival. It seems to very much fit with what you say here for the Curse of the Golden Flower, which I haven’t seen.

  • #3475

    It has arrived.

  • #3346

It’s funny that a lot of the reactions are from people who went to a T2 screening that was secretly a Dark Fate showing. In some circumstances that might actually make me annoyed.

  • #3338

I’m pretty excited to see this on Wednesday. Is it not showing in 3D at all? That seems interesting for a Cameron production, doesn’t it?

  • #3320

Any beer this time? If you carry on and watch 3 through 5 then alcohol must be guaranteed.

You’ve convinced to watch the first two Terminator films this week, before the new one drops. Not that I really need too much convincing.

  • #3318

There’s nothing like a trailer that seems to give away the whole plot. Classic Sony Pictures. Strangely enough I like the look of that despite never reading the comics.

Horror was a genre that I didn’t have much exposure to until I was an adult, basically, so I don’t have a big knowledge of the genre. I do enjoy watching various horror films though and exploring the sub-genres, though like Dave I think that the sci-fi horror nexus is pretty much my gateway. I also tend to like the ones that allow the main character to fight back, even if that lessens just how scary the movie might be. My wheelhouse is more Evil Dead 2 than The Evil Dead.

What horror movies have you watched this October?

None, so far. I don’t think that Zombieland really counts. I’m sure that I’ll see some though, sooner or later.

Oh, I forgot about Color Out of Space. Looks like I’m up to one.

Who is your favorite scream queen?

Hmm. I’m struggling with this one,so I’ll just say Anya Taylor-Joy for now. Looking forward to seeing her in the new Edgar Wright horror movie.

Who is your favorite slasher? Your favorite monster?

At this point, I think that Rambo is actually a fair answer to the first question. For the second I’ll go with the Thing.

Who is your favorite horror director?

What’s the criteria for this? Anyway, I’ll go with Miike, even though he’s done plenty of other stuff. He manages to disturb me with something in non-horror movies, and he doesn’t shy away from his villains be brutal and sadistic in his straight action movies. Seems like the sensibility of a horror director to me.

What horror movie has scared you the most?

The first thing that comes to mind is Kill List.

What is the most recent horror movie to really wow you and why?

Us would be the best one that I’ve seen this year. The doppelganger concept is interesting and ripe for discussion, plus the movie was executed pretty well with the right amount of levity. I liked how much of a genre movie it was rather than being one of the so-called “elevated horror” flicks.

Tell me one movie that isn’t.

  • #2501

Hahaha! Utter toilet is my new favourite phrase.

  • #2344

Yup. 208 minutes and 41 seconds long.
It looks like Endgame was only a warm-up for your bladder.

  • #2279

Did any of you watch Promare? Because I did, and wow. I saw it subtitled, with a great crowd and loved it, but I’m going to have to see it in dubbed so that I can really take it in visually. The animation is a knockout.

The final film that I saw at the London Film Festival was the Friday night screening of First Love, directed by Takashi Miike. The story has a fairly large number of characters spread across the Yakuza, the Triads and some characters caught up in-between. It never becomes confusing though, as each character is distinct in classic Miike fashion.

True to its title, this is a love story. But it’s a pretty violent one and very funny. I had a great time and can’t wait for it to come out in properly in the UK next year so that I can see it again.

  • #2065

Yes! My biggest problem with the board is having to scroll back to the top of the tgread to navigate to a different one. It’s been made a lot worse by the increased number of posts allowed per page.

  • #1961

Not yet. It looks like it’s still five or six weeks away, but I’m at the London Film Festival this week and making the most of it. I haven’t posted about everything I’ve seen, but it’s a fun time here.

I’m excited to see what you make of this one anyway, given your interest in the subject matter.

Le Mans ’66 worked really well for me, as someone who didn’t really know the story or any of the key players. Matt Damon and Christian Bale work well together (and separately), while most of the the racing scenes are top-knotch. Hell, some of the themes of the story work as an analogue for filmmaking. They probably stand out as more meta for me than anyone involved intended, purely because of the angle of Disney buying Fox.

Amyway, if this is the final blockbuster to come from Twentieth Century Fox proper, I hope that it’s a hit. It definitely seemed to please the crowd that I saw it with.

  • #1815

Uncut Gems was good. It doesn’t have the sustained intensity of Good Time and played more like a drama than a thriller to me, but there are definitely suspenseful sequences. Adam Sandler is really watchable and the score is great. It really isn’t for everyone, but if you’re interested then I say it’s worth a watch.

  • #1697

I hope that you find it’s worth the wait. I unknowingly went to a subtitled screening and that didn’t even damage the experience.

  • #1695

    Well, I liked Joker.
The subway shooting and the aftermath of that scene was terrific.

The tag for the Golden Lion is the best post-credits scene any superhero film so far.

  • #1574

I am pleased to say that I really enjoyed Knives Out. It’s a lot of fun to see a playful whodunnit with a subversive edge and a cast that appear to be having a ball. I really recommend seeing this with as little foreknowledge of possible. I’d only seen the first trailer and that seemed like plenty.

  • #1041

Nope, not that I know of. It may be for the best after a big argument recently over who votes what up, we can remain in ignorant bliss.

Huh. I must have missed that. Sounds kinda dumb.

  • #968

Is there a way to see who has voted up a post?

  • #935

Does this collect every issue of both series? That does tempt me.

  • #896

I really liked the work he and Mark did on the 616 Fantastic Four book. I think it’s an under-appreciated gem.

I think that those are my favourite FF costumes. The short sleeves really work for me.

  • #475

That Captain America cover looks good. Is anybody reading the Coates run?

  • #473

That’s a good age to play Wolverine, I think.
