I’ve been designing some 3D printed stands for Visionaries figures for a little while now and I’m actually making a final push to finish them, with an eye to making some extra to sell. But I’m having eleventh hour doubts about a key part of the design – the shape.

So, which of these two options looks better?

The shape’s meant to emulate the chest plates on the characters. One is accurate (roughly) to the dimensions on the figures, the other is not but I think might look better (I’m not going to say which is which, because I don’t want to colour your impression of them).

Green looks more character accurate but the grey looks more stable for standing figures (less likely to tip over).

It comes down to the question of form versus function. Which is your ultimate goal?

    Uhm, well both, I guess?

The green is design I’ve been using til now and is the one roughly accurate to the figure chest plates. It’s interesting you think it looks less stable – I’ve not have any problems with that, it’s pretty solid, even with a staff (which are ridiculously top heavy) placed in the post hole at the back.

I voted purely on look, without understanding a word of what these are actually for :D

So if you think that’s an invalid opinion, please disregard one green vote :-)

They stop the man dolls falling over, David. :-)

I won’t say your opinion is invalid. Maybe less valuable than that of people who might be interested in buying one, but certainly not invalid. I did a poll on the other board I go to (which is more action figure centric) and the left design won out by a high margin, though I think a good few of those people were – despite me clearly saying it was only about the shape – voting based on the colours.

So I’m probably going to move over to the design on the left. It has more space round the feet rather than wasted at the back around the staff holder, at the very least.

I think I prefer the black-and-royal blue one over the white-and-gold one.

Unfortunately, that’s just the colour that my brother’s printer happened to have in it and spare when he did that batch of prototypes. It’s from his 3D printed BB8. It is quite a nice shade though. The final versions of these will be gold for the Darkling Lords and silver for the Spectral Knights, to match their accessories.

I mean, gold and silver are okay…

… they don’t have a fruit named after them though.

They have fish and smiths and locks named after them.

Yeah, I mean… yeah but orange
