Because of the sharp sounds in Valkis it sounds harsh and unwelcoming, maybe rocky and volcanic.

The softer sounds in Malabar make it sounds more pleasant and relaxing, like a leisure planet maybe, warm and sunny with beaches. Maybe that’s just because it sounds a bit like Málaga!

In terms of people’s natural associations with made-up words, you might find this video interesting.

    Russian indie band?

May I ask, is there a specific planet you want to name and what is it that name should or shouldn’t evoke?

The home planet for a character in my superhero espionage project. Think if Martian Manhunter was a secret agent.

That sounds like a planet Russian indie bands would visit.

Came up with some more. For most of these, I used a planet name generator, then mixed and matched some of the syllables:

    Myara

    Xelara

    Xeron

    Raelia

    Yeran

    Valosia

    Celdar

    Xylion

Those all sound like brand names for prescription medications.

“Ask your doctor about Celdar if you suffer from nocturnal urinary bleeding. Reclaim your nights with Celdar.”

“Common side effects for Xelara are headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, genital rashes, and severe diarrhea.”

Maybe the “planet name generator” uses the same programming as the “prescription medication name generator”. It makes sense if you don’t think about it too much.

    Bit of trivia –

Did You Know That Most of the Brightest Stars Have Arabic Names? – MVSLIM

It would be interesting to use ancient or foreign names for planets as well, but most worlds come from the Greek so maybe look at various Greek God names not directly represented in the sky.

Zagreus is and interesting one. Zagreus was the name of the son of Zeus and Persephone (goddess of Spring and Fall and the Underworld). Zagreus was considered by Zeus to be his own heir and he gave him the gift of his lightning bolts.

So, why don’t we know about Zagreus (Zagward to his friends)?

Because Hera, of course, was so jealous, she actually released a few Titans from Tartarus to tear him to pieces. Fortunately, Zeus was able to save his heart and put it in the womb of a mortal woman who eventually was also incinerated through a trick of Hera’s. Zeus then sowed the divine fetus into his own thigh and eventually Zagreus was reborn as Dionysus, or Bacchus, who most people know pretty well.

My real suggestion is that you make the planet and culture look alien. Many times, the worlds just look like a future Earth. Go nuts and make it different.

I always liked the movie Fantastic Planet because the alien world did not look too familiar.

But why is the sand blue? There aren’t that many blue minerals. Copper sulphate springs to mind, but that’s very soluble in water so if there’s any water anywhere on the planet there won’t be any sand, just blue oceans (imagine a beach of pure salt on Earth – the first wave that came in, the beach would vanish and you would have slightly saltier sea).

Other options would be azurite or linarite, which aren’t water-soluble but could weather to produce sand. They’re both copper based again. Now I think of it, maybe all blue minerals are copper based? Not sure. Blue opal isn’t copper based, but opal is not always blue, so opal-sand deserts would probably be multi-coloured and probably scintillating.

So I would go with copper-based-mineral sand, which suggests a planet rich in copper (more so than Earth) and therefore something that a mining corporation would want to exploit.

What kind of planet might the name Samsar suggest?

I’m thinking it’s a peaceful place, or a place with contested ownership that has been resolved, because the word “sams” is swedish for “being in agreement, not fighting, at peace [with each other]”.

It also envokes memories of Samsara from Irredeemable. So the planet is blue.

That’s funny, because in Buddhism “samsara” refers to the endless cycle of pain and suffering in this world. You need to escape samsara to be at peace.

What about planet Juno(Hera in Greek)

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #92731

It is interesting that Juno and Minerva, though Roman Gods, were not as embraced by the Romans. Minerva was considered more Greek-centered than the other gods and Juno was a bitch. ;)

Obviously, many cultures have different names for all the planets, including Earth, but Neptune, Uranus and Pluto are pretty common since they were discovered more recently. Which is why Uranus and Pluto don’t have Roman names since the Romans weren’t aware of them.

However, in the case of science fiction, it is interesting whether to go for something more codified like Arrakis or completely imaginary like Tatooine.

I thought we’d already established that all words were completely imaginary.

Very true. All words were made up – so it’s a mystery how anyone ever understands what anyone else says.

Imagine the first time someone said something. How did anyone know what they were talking about?

Still, in the case of fiction, there are interesting points on the origins of names. Did the author make it up entirely as an original invention (like Barsoom), steal it from some older language roots or words (like Vulcan or Apokalips) or did they ask their toddlers that just learned to speak to come up with names (…yes, George, I’m looking at you).

Herschel wanted to name Uranus “George’s Star” in honour of the King. I think it’s a good thing he was talked out of it, it would have set a horrible precedent. Neptune would be Louis Philippe’s Star, and Pluto would be Herbert Hoover’s Star.
