Talk of a black James Bond over on the other thread reminded me — Sarah Michelle Gellar recently said that if Buffy the Vampire Slayer was rebooted (not that anyone has ever claimed it will be) then she would want to see Zendaya play Buffy.

Now, I don’t think anyone should play Buffy apart from SMG, and a reboot is a terrible idea. A Buffy:TNG approach would be a better idea, and the show has a built-in mechanism for that: “In every generation a slayer is born…”. Zendaya would be a terrific slayer for the 2020s generation.

Some people might complain about a black actor in the role, but people like that aren’t real Buffy fans so they don’t count.

Didn’t we already have a black actress play a slayer in Buffy anyhow? Kendra, was it? They already set up the mechanism for legacy heroes of all different nationalities and races within the original show, so I can’t see the concept being a problem.

We’ve seen two black slayers. Kendra, but also the “first” slayer was black, presumably because back at the dawn of humanity we were all black.

Wasn’t there talk of a Buffy sequel/reboot with a new Slayer?

    Ah. Yeah, there was:

According with the reports, Monica Owusu-Breen has been hired to pen the adaptation and serve as a showrunner, while original creator Joss Whedon will be an executive producer of the series. They are working together on the pilot script, with Gail Berman (who had produced both Buffy and Angel series), Joe Earley, Fran Rubel Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui serving as additional executive producers.[1]

No official script has been ordered, and the casting for the central role is yet to be determined, but the producers intend to hire a black actress to step into the role. The new version, which will be pitched to streaming and cable networks summer 2018, will be contemporary, building on the original mythology.[1]

The announcement to reboot Buffy comes a few months after Fox and 20th TV chairman and CEO Gary Newman hinted that the title could soon find itself into the studio’s development pipeline. “[Buffy] is the most ripe show we have for bringing back, it’s something we talk about frequently,” he said in March, noting that the choice to do so ultimately was up to Whedon.[2]

Responding to the online backlash, Monica Owusu-Breen seemed to imply that the reboot will involve new characters in place of the originals. In Twitter, she shared the statement:

“For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay. There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel… They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, twenty years later… And the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer… And that’s all I can say.”[3]

I’m suddenly imagining some standup comic going, “How many sistas you know named Buffy?!”

To be fair as a white guy working for a decade with an American boss and colleagues I have never heard of anyone called ‘Buffy’ outside that TV show. Anyone ever met a real life Buffy? Am I hidden from them?

Never met a Buffy, but as a wee child I had a crush on a TV character named Buffy from a sitcom called FAMILY AFFAIR. I looked up the name of the actress (Anissa Jones) and discovered that she died of a drug overdose at age 18. I’m shattered…

    Looks alright.

It did give me enough of a GoT nostalgia shot that I’m in. But given how GoT turned out once they left the source material, I’m not expecting too much.

  • #91111

I still think the main issue with Game of Thrones (TV version) was impatience. Everything they did was set up logically but I think they’d signed a stupid money contract with Netflix and rushed to finish it.

It remains to be seen of these showrunners are as good writing, all the stuff I liked best in GoT was the character and dialogue stuff.

“There is no cure for being a cunt’ for me is probably the peak.

I just re-read the comic in the one-volume collection. It’s ridiculous how much happens in that series when it’s objectively set across one night. It gets a bit repetitive towards the end, but overall is a lot of fun.

‘Black Mirror’ Returns: New Series in the Works at Netflix

A new series of “Black Mirror” is in the works at Netflix, Variety can reveal.

It’s been almost three years since Season 5 of the dystopian drama premiered on the streaming service in June 2019, but sources indicate that a new anthology series of “Black Mirror” is shaping up, and casting is now underway.

While details about specific stories are being kept under lock and key, Variety understands that Season 6 will have more episodes than Season 5, which comprised of just three instalments and starred Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace and Miley Cyrus.

A source close to the production tells Variety that the latest season is even more cinematic in scope, with each instalment being treated as an individual film. This is, of course, in line with recent seasons of “Black Mirror,” for which episodes usually exceeded 60 minutes and had incredibly high production values.

The new season of “Black Mirror” is the first to emerge since creator Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left their production company House of Tomorrow, which was backed by Endemol Shine Group, in January 2020. It wasn’t long before the pair set up shop under new production banner Broke and Bones, and Netflix quickly invested in the company through a mega deal in which it acquires parts of the business over a five-year period, for a sum that could reach $100 million.

When Brooker and Jones left House of Tomorrow, however, the rights to “Black Mirror” stayed with parent company Endemol Shine Group, which was ultimately acquired by Banijay Group in the summer of 2020. That arrangement effectively prevented Brooker and Jones from producing any more seasons for Netflix until a deal was hammered out with Banijay, and fans worried that that would be the end of the show.

Brooker himself threw doubt on “Black Mirror’s” future two years ago, telling the U.K.’s Radio Times magazine at the height of the pandemic that, “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

Evidently, a deal was finally reached, and Banijay Rights — the distribution arm of the company that holds both the format and finished-tape rights to “Black Mirror” — has licensed its hit show to Netflix.

Brooker has kept a relatively low profile since joining the Netflix fold. Known for his pithy BBC review formats “Weekly Wipe” and “Screenwipe,” Brooker applied a similar spin to his Netflix year-in-review show “Death to 2020,” which brought in a stable of celebrities to add some star power and deliver Brooker’s jokes themselves. Netflix followed up last year with a “Death to 2021” special. In between that period, he also executive produced the special “Attack of the Hollywood Clichés!”

In February, the streamer launched Brooker’s clever animated interactive short, “Cat Burglar,” which asked viewers to answer trivia questions in order to advance the story of a cat named Rowdy who’s trying to steal art from a museum. The show was a tribute to cartoonist Tex Avery, who helped to create iconic cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

Yet, two years on from joining Netflix, Brooker is still virtually synonymous with “Black Mirror,” and it makes sense that the streamer wants it back on the platform.

Though the show began life on U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, where it aired for two seasons, the format was rendered a global sensation on Netflix with big-budget, celebrity-laden episodes such as “San Junipero” and “USS Callister” taking the dark heart of the show to dizzying heights and picking up a cornucopia of awards in the process.

Netflix and Banijay Rights declined to comment for this story.

This is one where I’d been wondering why it hasn’t been made into a series for ages. It’s a good concept for a show. Whether this one is any good though… based on the trailer, I think it might still go either way.

The BBC has announced a raft of cost-cutting measures, including:

    • Merging the UK version of the News channel with the international one
    • scrapping BBC 4
    • scrapping Radio 4 Extra
    • merging Radio 4 LW with the regular one
    • moving CBBC to the iplayer

Some of those make sense. Rolling the international News channel into the UK one might even improve the latter, if it cuts down the sheer amount of inane rolling news content. BBC 4 has been solely repeats for a few months now (with BBC2 supposedly taking its remit of arts and science programming, but I’m not too convinced that’s happening) so fair enough ditching that if everything can be on the iplayer instead. Same with 4 Extra.

The CBBC one is less convincing though. The reasoning given is that kids go to streaming services rather than live TV, but that only accounts for well-off families with decent broadband, let alone subs. This is the same logic used to shunt BBC Three online a while back and that worked so swimmingly it’s bow back on TV. Getting rid of the channel I guess is a way to disguise commissioning less content (and to not have in-studio continuity), but if they’re ditching the channel they should bring back to morning and afternoon slots on BBC 1 and 2. They’re mostly filled with repeats and simulcasts of the news channel anyway.

I am very nervous about this whole thing. The picture shows they know what they’re going for, and so does the first teaser, which looks very good, and of course Gaiman is in a key position, but… well, given his involvement with American Gods, that doesn’t have to be a good thing.

I am very nervous about this whole thing.

As the saying goes, I have a bad feeling about this.

Sandman the comic does a lot of things brilliantly, but it’s to quite a large extent reliant on the medium for the stuff that works I think. The recent audio adaptation showed that when you have actors voicing these roles and acting the part, what works in comics can seem terribly creaky and hoary when you have actual humans trying to bring it to life.

Obviously I hope it’s good, but everything I’ve seen of it so far evokes countless slightly naff fantasy adaptations of the past, with nothing that makes me think they’re going to capture the magic of the comics version on screen.

…so they’re using Joanna Constantine instead of John in the first storyline, eh? That’s a bit of a shame, but I suppose they didn’t have a lot of choice there, given that John is currently part of CW DC universe. (I’m fine with a female role for this, but it doesn’t look like they’re going for John’s world-weary, fucked-up, punk-rock working-class charm, either but instead have a more classy/smart/in-control Joanna there, which is probably what she was in the book when she appeared, to be fair.)

I am a little surprised that Disney+ is releasing Ms. Marvel while Obi-Wan Kenobi is still going. Up until now, Marvel and Disney series did not overlap. There would normally be a break between series. I am sure there is some crossover with people watching both Star Wars and Marvel. I wonder if this is to get people to stay in the service longer during a viewing session. Mayne as more content is generated from each IP, this will be more common.

It just seemed unual to me.

It’d be a long old gap between the end of Moon Knight and whenever it is Obi-Wan finishes to not have a Marvel series running, which given how many they’re doing just doesn’t seem practical long term. And if you’re like me and don’t give a toss about Star Wars, would be pretty annoying.

Releasing them both on the same day does seem a little short-sighted though.

There was always going to be crossover, as there’s not enough weeks in the year otherwise (Andor is going to run for almost three months, at the same time as She-Hulk).

Obi-Wan ends in two weeks, so it wouldn’t have been long. I think there’s still going to be about a month between the end of Ms. Marvel and the start of She-Hulk without either franchise, so I suspect the “release two at once” strategy is partly about data-gathering, to see how it affects viewership of both shows, which people watch first, etc.

‘Law & Order’: Mehcad Brooks Cast As Detective In Season 22 – Deadline.com

Mehcad Brooks is joining Law & Order in season 22 of the NBC drama. He will help fill the void left by Anthony Anderson, who opted not to return after reprising his role in season 21 as Detective Kevin Bernard from the series’ original run.

No character name or description is available yet for Brooks, who was most recently seen in the feature film Mortal Kombat and Tyler Perry’s A Fall from Grace. Other film credits include Nobody’s Fool, In the Valley of Elah, Glory Road, Just Wright, and About Last Night. On TV, he recently starred in Supergirl.

Brooks joins Sam Waterston, Jeffrey Donovan, Camryn Manheim, Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi on the Dick Wolf show. Rick Eid, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski are executive producers. Law & Order is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Based on linear and digital viewing, the revival premiere of Law & Order that aired on Feb. 24, 2022 has totaled nearly 13 million total viewers. Like the original, it examines “The police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.”

Brooks is repped by Verve, Artists First and Brecheen Feldman Breimer Silver & Thompson.

2 dead in Mexico after Netflix series cast, crew van crashes

MEXICO CITY – Two actors on the Netflix series The Chosen One were killed and six other cast or crew members were injured after the van they were riding in crashed near Mulege on the Baja California Sur peninsula.

Local media reported the crash occurred Thursday, and said the van flipped after running off the road in a desert area. The crew had apparently been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time.

The Baja California Department of Culture said Friday that Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar died.

Netflix describes The Chosen One this way: “A 12-year-old boy learns he’s the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind. Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Peter Gross.”

According to casting calls, the series is being taped by an independent production company.

I think there may be some confusion here. The Chosen One is a Brazilian drama produced by Netflix, separate to American Jesus (originally Chosen in the comics).

Yeah, I assume they got just the name of the show wrong, given that Chosen has been filming in Mexico for months.

I think there’s been a name change. Before when I Googled it Netflix had a placeholder page for American Jesus. Now if you do the same search it says ‘about The Chosen One’ at the bottom.

    UPDATED STORY (06/18/2022):

Production has been temporarily suspended on Netflix‘s The Chosen One following a car crash in Mexico that left two actors, Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, dead and six more cast or crew members injured.

The injured cast members are in stable condition, per Deadline. Redrum, the series’ production company, halted production following the accident, which reportedly took place while the passengers were driving to a nearby airport on June 16. Netflix has not yet commented on the accident.

‘The Chosen One’: Friends Call for Investigation into Netflix Stars’ Deaths

The friends of late actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, who tragically died on Thursday, June 16, in a car crash in Mexico, are demanding a thorough investigation into alleged issues with the Netflix production.

Filming was temporarily suspended on Netflix’s The Chosen One last week when an automobile accident left Garduño Cruz and González Aguilar (known professionally as Paco Mufote) dead and four more cast/crew injured. Now, writer Rick Zazueta is pleading for authorities to investigate the incident as he claims that the cast had previously complained of logistical and transportation issues on the production.

“This is a plea for justice for these deaths,” Zazueta wrote in a lengthy Facebook post. “This was no ordinary accident, the cast had been complaining openly about the logistical and transport issues faced in this production, calling it illogical, unreasonable, ignorant, and stupid.”

Zazueta went on to allege that the van transporting the crew was not fit for purpose, “worn out tires, noisy brakes, loose steering wheel, not all seat belts worked, easily identifiable signs of danger,” he wrote. “But, the show must go on, and the actors get wrapped up in the artform and want to work, and don’t get as many opportunities to work, so they take these gigs with big dreams of NETFLIX and the promise of a small paycheck.”

Liliana Conlisk Gallegos, a friend of González Aguilar, spoke to the Daily Beast about the tragedy and also demanded action after hearing about Zazueta’s accusations.

“It fills me with rage that there are reports of abuse and exploitation being shared by people involved with the production,” she said. “I would like to demand that this is further investigated. If nothing wrong was going on, then there shouldn’t be an issue with providing the information.”

Netflix has not yet commented on the allegations; Deadline reports that an investigation into the accident is ongoing. The four other crew members injured in the crash are said to be recovering and in good condition, according to Deadline.

‘The Chosen One’ Accident Survivor Remembers Longtime Friends Who Perished, Addresses Tragic Van Ride & Work Conditions On Netflix Series

Following the fatal June 16 crash that claimed the lives of two actors and injured six others from the cast and crew of Netflix’s The Chosen One, survivor Yeray Albelda spoke with Deadline about the loss of his close friends Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar (known professionally as Paco Mufote).

The trio were hired to play miners in the Redrum-produced series shooting in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Albelda and González began work June 2 and were rooming together; Garduño had an earlier start date.

Albelda, Garduño, González and the rest of the cast and crew involved in the accident were headed to the Loreto International Airport to catch flights to their respective home cities—Albelda, Garduño and Gonzalez were en route to Tijuana—for a week and a half break from filming. They were due back on set following the break to work until July 16.

Eight people total from The Chosen One were riding in the van: Albelda, Garduño, González, two female stunt coordinators, a young actor and his guardian, and the driver; only the driver and the passenger sitting next to him were wearing seatbelts. The driver was new and had only arrived a day prior to the set as a replacement for a different driver who needed a break as demand for transportation was high.

Albelda suffered head trauma in the accident and is unable to remember the tragic ride. He was under observation due to amnesia and has undergone multiple scans, all of which have come back normal. Physically, he is nursing a fractured clavicle and scapula, but none of his injuries are life-threatening. Doctors have ordered him to rest for 6-8 weeks.

“I remember turning in my hotel room key that morning and going out to the street to buy a burrito since the van was picking us up at 7 a.m. and we hadn’t had time to have breakfast. After that, I remember waking up in the ambulance,” Albelda said.

“Inside the van, the setup was three rows for passengers behind the driver and passenger seats in the front. I normally sat in the second row, and believe that’s where I was sitting when the accident happened. It’s my understanding that Paco and Ray were sitting in different rows, at the end closest to the van’s sliding door. I have been told the van spun around many times and the sliding door flew open. My guess based on what I’ve been told is that [without seatbelts], Paco and Ray were ejected.”

Albelda does not fault Netflix or Redrum for the accident, and says both have gone above and beyond to support him in the aftermath.

“They have done the right thing and have been just,” he said. “This wasn’t like a ticking time bomb situation where at any moment something was going to go wrong—no. There’s no way anyone could’ve imagined this would happen. Trust me, I just lost two very good friends who I’ve known for many years. If I felt anyone was responsible, I would speak up to bring their families justice.”

Albelda has worked in about five major productions, including Fear the Walking Dead, and says the vans used in all of them appeared to be in comparable condition. He describes the vans used on The Chosen One as “not brand new made in 2022 but definitely not old.” He says there was nothing of note that caused him to worry about the van they rode in to the airport, but he also notes he is not a mechanic and isn’t aware of any mechanical issues.

“I recently had to visit the location where the van from the accident is being stored to claim any property I might have left behind. Seeing it again and how it was destroyed had a huge impact on me,” Albelda said. “Some people have suggested the tires may have been subpar, so I made sure to specifically look at the condition of all four and those people are incorrect. The wheels were in fact in good condition.”

He added, “One thing I will say is that no one encouraged those sitting in the back of the van to use seatbelts. Only the driver and the front passenger consistently used seatbelts. To be clear, there were seatbelts in the vans, but rarely did anyone use them. I will speak for myself in saying I never did. I always felt safe while in the van and I couldn’t have imagined that a terrible accident like this could happen.”

Most of the injured were released from the hospital the same day except for Albelda and a female stunt coordinator who also was kept under observation. The stunt coordinator told Albelda recently that she remains under hospital care closer to home.

Work on The Chosen One resumed Monday, a decision Albelda supports as a tribute to his friends. Due to his physical and emotional trauma, he has opted to exit the series. The production is covering his medical bills and will continue to pay his salary as if he had worked through the end, according to Albelda.

Albelda has heard there have been allegations of poor working conditions and shady business practices behind the scenes of The Chosen One. An outspoken critic has been novelist Rick Zazueta, who claims to have insight into the production thanks to sources from within.

Albelda says Zazueta recently sent him a friend request on Facebook which he accepted, but clarifies that he has never met him or known of him prior to the accident.

“I did read his accusations and found them very interesting,” Albelda said. “I have never spoken to him and I am unaware of who his sources are. I can only speak to my experience as someone who has worked on multiple productions of this size. Yes, they’re exhausting, and we work long hours. I don’t know if my experience is different because I’m used to working 16-hour days, but everything on The Chosen One was on par with my experience on say a show like Fear the Walking Dead. It was business as usual for me. My biggest complaint is that sometimes we would get picked up to be on set at 9 a.m. but we wouldn’t shoot until like 2 p.m., but that’s par for the course in this business.”

He continued, “Shooting schedules were often in flux because if someone had to isolate due to Covid infection, we would have to pivot to something else. My complaints are small. I never felt like my life was at risk or that I was being taken advantage of. There was never a moment when I wanted to complain or leave the production. I was paid what I was promised and when it was promised. I know we make less than American actors do but I was never lied to about what I was going to be paid. I was never abused or exploited in any way or treated unfairly. I’m not saying this isn’t someone else’s experience but it wasn’t for me. It wasn’t anything I witnessed first-hand either.”

Netflix declined to comment for this story.

Albelda and other friends of Garduño and González gathered Tuesday afternoon for a memorial service honoring the actors. It was an emotional gathering that celebrated two honorable men who leave behind family, friends and admirers after a lifetime of giving of themselves and their art.

“Both are longtime friends from the theater with who I’ve been through a lot—both good times and bad. We’ve been on tour together and we all know one another’s families,” Albelda said. “I’ve known Paco for about 18 years and Ray for around seven years. Ray was the rebellious one. I never posted photos on set because we signed NDAs that prevent spoilers from getting out. But Ray, as the rebel, loved being on set and he posted a few photos anyway. He was very proud to be working on this production. He was very much the life of the party. When we had time off, he would hit the local bars or listen to music by the pool.”

“I remember Ray and I first met in 2015, we collaborated on three projects through his theater company, Teatro Inmigrante,” Albelda continued. “Through his company, he worked a lot with children, and I remember it was very important to him that the young actors be treated as professionals. He worked with very talented actors who were smart; he didn’t want people to underestimate what they could accomplish. He also tackled social justice issues in his productions. We were talking about his character at his memorial yesterday; he had a very strong personality that didn’t rub everyone the right way. But it was because of his sternness that he was able to help enact change and stand up for what was important. He was also very generous and wanted everyone to succeed. You always knew where you stood with him.”

“Paco and I met at the first theater audition I ever had. I want everyone to know that his stage name Mufote represents his three biggest passions: music, photography, and theater. What stood out about Paco the most was his generosity, his empathy, and how humble he was. He treated everyone equally from the extras to the star of whatever project he was involved in. While we were shooting in Santa Rosalia, he hated being stuck inside the hotel. He would go out in the community and start random conversations with the locals. He visited the museums and learned the history of the area, which he would then teach us all about when we caught up later. Paco yearned for knowledge. He also was good at lending an ear or a shoulder.”

He added, “That photo you saw on Ray’s Instagram from Paco’s birthday represents how Paco wanted to celebrate another year of life. A simple gathering among friends, he didn’t want to party or get drunk. I remember one instance when we were shooting a scene in the desert, and he gave up his umbrella to someone else who needed it more. Both are leaving a huge hole in the hearts of those that knew them.”

This tragedy hasn’t dissuaded Albelda from continuing to work as an actor; in fact, it’s fueled him to work even harder knowing two thespians he admired no longer have that opportunity.

“Their deaths are tragic but I told their families to find comfort in the fact that they were doing what they loved the most. They were living their dream. I find comfort in that Paco and Ray died that way and not from an incurable disease or something worse. I was given the gift of living another day and I don’t take that lightly. I want to continue acting and honor Paco and Ray by sharing everything that they taught me. I will share my dream with them for the rest of my life,” he said.

If they do, can Doug Kenney sue them?

Bored of the Rings is a 1969 parody of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. This short novel was written by Henry Beard and Douglas Kenney, who later founded National Lampoon. It was published in 1969 by Signet for the Harvard Lampoon, and, unusually for a parody, has remained in print for over 40 years. It has been translated into at least eleven languages.

The parody steps through The Lord of the Rings, in turn mocking the prologue, the map, and the main text. The text combines slapstick humour with deliberately inappropriate use of brand names.

Bored of the Rings was pretty awful.

I didn’t realise it was by the National Lampoon guys, but that would explain it, as National Lampoon is usually pretty awful too. Maybe you had to be American to appreciate it.
