I suspect they’ll spare Donna Preston from having to do every scene naked.

Some very good casting there (although I’d seen a lot of it before). Fry as Gilbert has always been an excellent pick.

I don’t know who Mason Alexander Park is but they look perfect as Desire.

Really? I thought they were all only officially announced today, and it was only Fry who had let slip his casting in an interview a while back.

If any of the other 11 had been previously announced then it must have passed me by.

These were the only ones I’d seen before.

That’s exactly what I was thinking when Gar said “they look perfect as Desire”.

Question: should pronoun-blind casting be a thing? Should only they-actors be cast as they-characters?

  • #64823

    Also, should Gilbert be “It/It”?

My feelings on it are that so long as you’re sensitive and aren’t pissing over gender non-conforming people in your casting it’ll be fine. Like straight actors play gay characters and vice versa, and it’s generally gonna be OK.

I did quite like that Blu Del Barrio came out as non-binary during the shooting of Star Trek Discovery series 3 and they rewrote their character to also come out. It really helped cement the extended family arc they worked between their character with Stamets and Culber, where it’s very common for older couples in the LGBT community take younger people under their wings when their biological families reject them.

Comedy Central UK launched a new female-focused topical panel show last week. After one episode, several of the people involved have quit “on moral grounds”:

    https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/news/6386/comics-quit-comedy-central-show/

    Sophie Duker:

“In my first topical host monologue I attempted to highlight oppressive governments across the globe clamping down on civilians’ right to protest, related recent events in Al-Aqsa mosque and Kenmure Street, called out well-meaning liberals and lefties who claim to be anti-racist yet share and amplify antisemitic material, spoke of the sinister new PCSC Bill and took some (fairly tame tbh) at out textbook posh boy Prime Minister, perma-smirky Home Secretary and notorious cis woman JK Rowling. Yes it was fire! 🔥

I know my shit from both sides of the camera, having worked substantially in production since 2013, and naturally my piece wasn’t written in isolation – it had already been meticulously fact-checked, researched and edited for tone and balance days before the record. Despite this, several compromising positions I was put in on the record day due to content of my monologue involved unusual and unacceptable levels of last-minute interference. If I am speaking as me, in my own voice, about such important topics, I must either have written what I am saying of feel comfortable that I fully believe and understand the content & message of the speech I am given.

Measures have already been put in place to avoid what happened to me happening again but the fact that it occurred means that I do not think returning to host is sensible for me. I have not & would never ask or encourage anyone to take a stand by quitting a whole job -get that money sis!- but I’m awed by the bravery and selflessness shown by the other women of colour who have chosen not to continue their relationship with the show, when minimising, ignoring or normalising what happened would have been all to easy.

It should not fall to anyone – let alone the most marginalised – to make these kinds of decisions, giving up income, opportunities, contacts and credits to safeguard their integrity. I hope that our industry will soon have the nipples to build braver, more empathetic spaces that bring uncomfortable / nuanced conversations into the light, rather than keeping them in the shadows. I hope incidents like these prompt gatekeepers to reflect upon which power structures they are serving and reinforcing, and what kind of talent they are failing to retain.

I love being stupid on sets and stages and I can’t wait to do more of it, hopefully alongside many of the same people I started this particular adventure with.”

Janet Street-Porter is the guest on tonight’s episode, which is reason enough not to watch.

That’s exactly what I was thinking when Gar said “they look perfect as Desire”.

I don’t know the actor but read somewhere else they were non-binary. So I guess the pronouns do match the performers and the characters, probably, I assume they were all happy with it.

I did see the photo gallery of Mason on their website and they vary a lot on the masculine/feminine scale. https://www.masonalexanderpark.com/copy-of-production-photos

Which of course is perfect for Desire who does the same thing in the comic. It’ll be interesting if they stick with one rather androgynous look or keep changing it up depending on who Desire wants to seduce/influence.

They didn’t include pronouns with the first cast announcement image in the same format, so I assume the pronouns were included here mainly because it was relevant to the actor playing Desire.

Evil season 2 has moved to Paramount+ (exclusively) and the first of 13 episodes drops Sunday June 20th and then subsequent episodes weekly.

There’s even a trailer, probably U.S. only (doesn’t work for me)
    Collider link, Thrillist link

I really enjoyed the first season, and hope I can easily watch the second season in my country.

Didn’t even know there was a Paramount+, but I know I’m not ordering it.

    When does this bullshit stop?

Networks are finding they can move shows with marginal ratings to streaming services as a draw and with lower expectations.

We’re a few years away from the real contraction of the streaming market. It’s an inevitability. We’ll see mergers and acquisitions. There are too many services and it’s getting expensive. A few years from now, there will be only a handful left.

    When does this bullshit stop?

Around the time of the SuperBowl (early February 2021) CBS All Access (which carried the new Star Trek shows, among other things) changed its name to Paramount+. Maybe they hoped people would confuse it with Disney+ and sign up.

I saw the Evil season 2 trailer on the local CBS channel here, and was annoyed that it’s only available on the pay streaming service. I don’t love the CBS programming enough to pay for this one show.

I’m looking forward to watching it this weekend. I loved the comic book series.

I did too. By all accounts this version goes a little more ‘Amblin’ style than the comic (i.e. more upbeat and sentimental) but I think that was at the heart of it anyway even if the edges of the comic may turn out to be a bit rougher.

The reviews for Jupiters Legacy aren’t particularly awful. With a few dips and some tops they rest in the middle category, at least to my eyes.

A Metacritic score of 45 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 38.

That RT score is pretty weird, look at this:

The 2.5/5 is interpreted as “fresh” but the 3/5 score as “rotten”?

    Whaaaa?

Well, a 38 on rottentomatoes is really, really bad. Whereas 45 on metacritic is sort of in the middle there.

  • #65780

I mean the middle ground isn’t a popular place to be nowadays in the arena of debate but it was generally not very well received rather than being an absolute stinker, which is about right.

Apart from the wigs there’s nothing awful about it, you can see everyone tried hard but it didn’t quite make the grade. I think it also didn’t help that the best of it is towards the end. It hits the ‘ah I can see where this is going’ point long after most reviewers would given up.

Disappointing to see the stuff coming out from the cast about the making of Kim’s Convenience, now that it’s finished (disappointed it happened, not that they’re speaking about it).

(tweets of screenshots of a Facebook post – I know it’s not ideal but the newspaper reports of it have distorted some of the claims a bit, imo).

I’m more surprised to hear The Blacklist still exists. Loved the first few seasons but gave up after a terrible season 5. Hard to believe they managed to get another 4 seasons out if the show from that point, but good for that cast and crew I guess.

IMO too little too late. If they could have gotten rid of her 4 or 5 series ago they would be in better shape now. From the very beginning it was obvious she was only there for Spader to play off of but when they gave her story material on her own, she failed badly. Klattenhoff and Lennix could carry her only so far when she was not with Spader.

I’ve been watching The Blacklist since the beginning. I completely agree that are Season 4 or 5 they should have either ended the series or gotten rid of the character of Liz. You can tell the writers have struggled to make Liz relevant. The eight episodes this season without her were great.

It will be interesting to see if S9 ends up being the last or if going Liz-less gives them a much needed refresh.

It is suspiciously close to Liz’s departure.

Many of us have complained about Liz and how as the show went on it bogged down as she got more screen time. Did the showrunner have a thing for the actress?

You can tell the writers have struggled to make Liz relevant.

Could that be because the showrunner was making the writers come up with stories based around her?

Normally when I see leads and creators leave, my desire to watch goes away too but if my ideas have any validity it could be that season 9 will be much better than the previous few seasons.

I wish they hadn’t announced that Boone was leaving ahead of the finale. It sucked all the air out of the episode. You knew she was going to die. They had already faked Liz’s death once before. It would have been a bit more shocking if that had been kept a surprise.

As to next season, it will be interesting to see what they do. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being the last season of the show.

  • #67771

I don’t get the Liz hate… sure, the actress ain’t the best actress, but that was never the issue… the writing’s been the issue and the fact that it should’ve ended seasons ago… The finale was such a boring thing, because yet again, we’re close to getting answers, but no, they still keep beating around the bush. That’s why this series is in such a bad state, because they keep milking Reddington’s identity instead of coming up with something fresh and different.

  • #67858

I never really had an issue with Liz while I was watching The Blacklist, but I did feel like her character suffered a lot after Tom was gone. I’d say she probably was the weakest actor in the main/recurring cast, but I was honestly just annoyed with the way they were dragging the show out and the direction of the storylines in general so I had to give up. But even at it’s worst, Spader was a delight to watch so I hope the show finds a way to end on a high note for all the cast, crew and fans still invested.

    This right here.
It did have a feeling it was off a few seasons back. I thought they pulled themselves out of that, but not back to 100%.
I have really enjoyed this last season though, but figured it was because they were working towards an end. Definitely more focused.

They really need to have the end mapped out. If they have enough good story for 2 more seasons (and I have every reason to believe they desire season 10 because how many shows get to double digits?) then they need to focus and deliver and work towards a definitive end.
But they can’t stretch it out, or wait and see.

FX’s Alien Series Is ‘Not a Ripley Story,’ Says Noah Hawley — Spring Start Eyed

The Xenomorphs won’t have to worry about getting owned by Ellen Ripley in the Alien TV series currently being penned by Fargo‘s Noah Hawley.

FX Networks chief John Landgraf announced back in December that the cabler’s production house “is moving quickly to bring audiences the first television series based on one of the greatest science-fiction/horror classics ever made — Alien.” He offered no plot details at the time, but said that the series is “set not too far into our future” and would be “the first Alien story to be set on Earth.”

Hawley himself has now shed a half of a half of a bit more light on what he has planned, making clear in a Vanity Fair Q&A, “It’s not a Ripley story” involving any iteration of Sigourney Weaver’s seminal sci-fi heroine.

“She’s one of the great characters of all time,” Hawley rightly noted, “and I think the story has been told pretty perfectly, and I don’t want to mess with it.”

Hawley also explained that by setting the TV series on Earth, the typical confines of the movies become a frightful non-issue. “The Alien stories are always trapped… Trapped in a prison, trapped in a spaceship,” he said. “I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of ‘What happens if you can’t contain it?’ are more immediate.”

Hawley said he is thus far two scripts into the project, and is aiming to get the cameras rolling in Spring 2022 (once the glut of TV/film productions that were derailed by the pandemic eases up some).

Whether the Alien series ends up airing on FX, or streaming on FX on Hulu, will be decided at the time it merits a series order.

‘Lovecraft Country’ Not Returning For Season 2 On HBO

One of the most celebrated — and inventive — new series of 2020, Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country, will not be getting a second installment.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

With its unique blend of horror, fictional period drama, real historical figures, fantasy, sci-fi and social commentary, the empowering Lovecraft Country took pop culture by storm in August and helped advance the social conversation ignited by the death of George Floyd.

Helped by strong word of mouth, the series starring Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors grew its fan base, with the Season 1 finale hitting a series-high audience on HBO (1.5 million) and becoming the most watched new episode of an original series on HBO Max in its first day of availability. By the time the finale was released in October, the premiere episode had crossed the 10M viewers mark.

But the enthusiastic reception of the first season of Lovecraft Country, created, executive produced and showrun by Green and produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, did not automatically guarantee a renewal.

That is because Season 1 was based on Matt Ruff’s book, which served as a roadmap for the series. Like HBO has done with other series — most notably Big Little Lies, which ended up producing an original second season after a first installment based on Liane Moriarty’s novel — it pursued a potential second chapter of Lovecraft Country.

“Misha is working with a small team of writers and they’re coming up with a take,” Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer of HBO and HBO Max, told Deadline in February. “She had a book to go on in the first season. She and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Misha, so we’re giving them the time to work.”

Ultimately, after careful consideration, a decision was made not to proceed with a second season.

At the time of the Lovecraft Country finale airing in October, Green outlined for Deadline where she wanted to take the series. “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of,” said Green, who co-created another acclaimed series, WGN America’s Underground, before developing Lovecraft Country.

The 10-episode first season of Lovecraft Country followed Atticus Freeman (Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

Lovecraft Country was written and executive produced by Green. Peele executive produced through his Monkeypaw Productions banner. Abrams and Ben Stephenson executive produced through Bad Robot Production in association with Warner Bros. Television. Bill Carraro was also an executive producer. Other executive producers included episode 1 director Yann Demange and episodes 2 and 3 director Daniel Sackheim. David Knoller executive produced episode 1 of the series.

‘Lovecraft Country’ Season 2 Teased By Creator Misha Green After HBO Cancels Horror Drama Series

A very very different America was going to be unveiled in Season 2 of Lovecraft Country, creator Misha Green revealed today after HBO officially pulled the plug on the acclaimed horror drama.

A couple of hours after Deadline exclusively reported on the surprising demise of the the Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors and Michael Kenneth Williams starring series, showrunner Green took to social media to paint a picture of what might have been. It was certainly something to see, especially leading into the July 4th weekend:

Depicting four nations on what is the territory of the continental United States, the image Green teased on Twitter comes from a more than 75-page Bible that was created for a second season of Lovecraft Country, I hear. However, even with all that foundation work, no scripts had been written yet for what was anticipated to be a 10-episode season that was a seemingly slamdunk for renewal.

Having eclipsed the 2016 novel by Mark Ruff that served as Season 1’s source material, Underground co-creator Green was clearly looking to weave some more genre magic with alternate history. Which in many ways, remains within the mythology of Green, Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams ZEP’d first season. Having debuted on August 16, 2020 on the premium cabler, Lovecraft Country simultaneously ripped back the curtain on a secret history of American white supremacy, reappropriated some of the themes of writer and avowed racist H.P. Lovecraft, and shattered genres barriers over its 10-episode run.

Back in October of last year in a post-mortem on the Season 1 Full Circle” finale, Green spoke to Deadline of what Season 2 could be. “Nothing is official yet, but I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of,” the EP said.

The axing of Lovecraft Country by the still WarnerMedia-owned outlet comes as the CAA-repped Green is set to direct and pen as new Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander set to reprise her role as Lara Croft. The filmmaker also has a full dance card with a new Cleopatra Jones and the Kate Wood written action vehicle picture Fuel, which Green is executive producing with Smollett, among other projects.

That’s a pretty dumb reason considering that the novel started out as a TV pitch, and that is something you can still feel in the structure of the novel.

Still haven’t seen season 1, but I would’ve liked there to be more of it when I get a start. Damn.

I guess HBO needs to save their money for another Game of Thrones spin-off that nobody wants.

It wasn’t bad. I think the major drawback is that Lovecraft for the most part isn’t really scary in any entertaining sense on screen. Most movies and shows really have to change a lot of what is primarily a literary appeal in cosmic horror.  Also, you do get a bit of the drawback that horror movies set in wars face – war is far scarier than any fictional ghost or monster. It’s not uniformly unsuccessful but it often is.

The racial violence of the South – which in the series was often like something out of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre kind of movie – was often scarier than the Lovecraftian elements of the series so the supernatural elements were a little bit of a letdown. Though some of the scenes and stories worked really well combining both of them.

So, a second series probably would’ve been better than the first actually. On the other hand, it’s not a big deal that there won’t be one except that these people will all need to find new jobs now. That’s always the big disappointment – though, on the other hand, they will have opportunities they couldn’t take if there was another season.

That’s the thing more studios should do. If they are on the fence, it is better to just drop the axe instead of dragging it out and then canceling it months down the road while these people have had to say no to anything else they could be doing.

Based on what I posted above, it looked like S2 would have been radically different. It made me think of Jonathan Hickman’s East of West series.

Pretty sure they’re already doing either MCU shit or DCCU shit… soooo…

Sucks that it got cancelled though, I really liked season 1… they lost me quite a bit towards the end of the season with the weird things pertaining to the aunt (that whole thing was just too much), but other than that, it was good.

Looking forward to this, although the trailer feels oddly serious for such a goofy and fun show.
