‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Pilot at CW Casts Donald Faison as Professor Utonium
Ghosts to be remade in America
American TV network CBS have ordered a series based on hit BBC One sitcom Ghosts.
Ghosts launched on BBC One in 2019, and quickly became an audience favourite. Based in a dilapidated country house, it follows the adventures of nine ghosts who have died there over the centuries, and their interactions with new owners Alison and Mike. Only Alison can see and hear them.
Deadline reports that the new version of the show will star actors Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar in the central roles of the house’s new owners, with Rebecca Wisocky, Brandon Scott Jones, Danielle Pinnock, Asher Grodman, Richie Moriarty, Sheila Carrasco and Román Zaragoza playing the ghosts.
I’ve only seen the first season of the original, it’s silly fun. Rose McIver and UTK seems like good casting.
The main difference will probably be in the types of ghosts they have, most of the ghosts in the UK version wouldn’t make much sense to be haunting an American house. I’m sure they’ll work it out; there’s some they can do in the US that wouldn’t work in the original.
I really like Ghosts, it’s a good fun family sitcom with a lot of potential for various plots and stories. It also has some surprisingly poignant moments.
OK, this is getting ri-daggone-diculous!

American Gods is cancelled. It probably shouldn’t have lasted as long as it did, anyway. I’ll finish the third season at some point (as it’s way better than the second), but it’s not exactly a big loss for the TV landscape. This whole thing doesn’t make me optimistic about any other Gaiman TV projects really.
Dude what the fuck, they were already talking about season 4… in fact I was pretty sure (and pleased) that they had renewed it for its FINAL season… jeeeesus, at this point just finish it… what a dick move u_u

I saw where there is discussion to either do a movie or a brief miniseries to wrap it up.
Review: Christopher Meloni’s Stabler is back, but ‘Organized Crime’ doesn’t feel like ‘Law & Order’
I would definitely watch it based on that, even if I hadn’t read the comics.
Yeah, same here. Looks like it all worked out pretty well. There’s nothing particularly brilliant in the trailer, but it looks quite convincing – the premise of a family of the greatest superheroes falling apart and fighting each other is a good one, and it all looks very solidly made. This should be a big hit for Netflix.
Looks good… I wonder how they’ll handle the telepathic scene in the show? Anyways, next month… nice…

Whoa that’s great news!!!!! and a no brainer to be honest… they should really give it a good marketing push, it’s a great show that not a lot of people have seen because it aired on Cinemax.
Yeah, that’s awesome! It’s a great show and I’m happy there’ll be more of it.

Vol. 3 is coming in 2022
Well, I better finally finish vol.1 then!
Netflix shares plunge amid fears coronavirus boom is over
I think this is inevitable to some extent. These services can’t keep expanding their base forever and Netflix is a relatively mature streaming service.
I think it’s only once the subscriber numbers start to settle down that we’ll see how sustainable their current model is.
Hard not to think that we are past the peak of Netflix, what with Disney+ on the ascent and a proliferation of other services coming on to the market. They’re still not going anywhere anytime soon, of course.
Well, realistically, they only need to ride it out until some of the lesser streaming services fail and they fold back into Netflix, sort of what happened with Steam… but there’s always the possibility none of them will fold, in which case, it’s a good thing they made a deal with Sony, since Sony is the only big studio left without a streaming service of their own.
I could see Paramount +, “Peacock” (seriously…) and AppleTV failing, or at least scaling back, but who knows… hard to predict if traditional TV will be dropped in favour of streaming services soon enough to make the streaming services super worthwhile…
There’s always a temptation with these things to treat it like a race, which is always a fun narrative for journalists, but there are a lot more scenarios at play.
Netflix grew above the predicted rate for 3 quarters due to lockdowns and then below forecast for the 4th, so essentially the growth is what they predicted but just in a different pattern where it was front loaded by outside influences. I think there’s still ample room for growth for them but most of it will be outside the mature English speaking markets like the US and UK.
Disney + is growing faster but it comes off a base of zero customers which is a lot easier.
It’s hard to predict right now because as Jon says there’s a possibility they can all survive and eventually make money like multiple TV networks have, or some may not be viable. Something like Apple TV is outside the norms I think of a broadcasting model, it’s being used with all the free subs as a retention tool for their devices business.
Bit like amazon has an edge because their TV programme is also tied to other advantages that people have as “prime” customers.
Bit like amazon has an edge because their TV programme is also tied to other advantages that people have as “prime” customers.
Yes I saw an interesting example of that with Amazon as a rugby fan. Last November they bid for the sport for the first time (they have done some football and tennis before) with an international cup and people asked if they’d be looking to show more competitions in future, maybe the league or European cup. The reports back were they were specifically interested in the timeline of an autumn competition so people sign up to Prime, buy Christmas presents with the free shipping and then stick with the subscription.
That’s a way of thinking no sports channel has done before I think.
There’s always a temptation with these things to treat it like a race, which is always a fun narrative for journalists, but there are a lot more scenarios at play.
In fairness to that writer the story is more about the share price and how the market reacted to the latest figures.
That’s not to say that there isn’t short-term thinking at play on the investor side too, but I think this is less about a journalist forcing an angle and more about seeing the market slightly correct to more realistic expectations after a period of unusually (and unsustainably) high subscriber growth.
Netflix is insanely over valued at a PE ratio of about 40x forecast earnings. Most of the big tech companies have been overvalued in recent years but the rest of them would appear to have a stronger core than Netflix, which is solely cranking up debt to crank out content to prop up a massive subscriber number that the market now expects to never, ever fall. I can’t see how it is sustainable at this level in the longer term.
I think when the current boom of streaming platforms settles down they’ll start to be bundled together like cable/satellite channels (or groups of channels) are/were. You’ll have a subscription for £x from a main provider (someone like Sky) and it’ll include within it Netflix, Disney, Peacock, Britbox Discovery+ etc.
For the life of me I can’t fathom why they went with the name Peacock for their streaming service
It’s because it’s NBC isn’t it?
I’m still not sure I’m comfortable enough in my manhood to subscribe to something with the word cock in it.
No wonder Doc Ock never got his articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Most of the big tech companies have been overvalued in recent years but the rest of them would appear to have a stronger core than Netflix
I disagree. They all load up on crazy debt and are overvalued but Netflix have increasingly unique content that they own. They have assets.
The real elephants in the room are the gig economy guys who basically just have an app anyone could replicate and PR to push it. Uber had to run away and exit South East Asia because an opponent just copied what they did but were nicer to the drivers. Business dead in 6 months because they have no assets past a simple mobile app I could get a couple of guys to replicate for $1000.
Every app that just delivers a service with no ownership of anything has a much weaker core than Netflix.
Bit like amazon has an edge because their TV programme is also tied to other advantages that people have as “prime” customers.
The difference being Amazon has A TON of money, so they can afford to compete in the “streaming wars” or to just burn money for that matter… I don’t think Apple is in quite the same financial situation, but hey, maybe I’m wrong…

I was referring more to Netflix’s direct competition in the streaming world. The likes of Amazon, Apple and Disney have far more going on in their business models than just chucking more cash into the money pit of on-demand, on-a-wing-and-a-prayer content creation. Gig economy apps are a whole other matter and, yes, full of issues.
No wonder Doc Ock never got his articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
You would think he would have published under his given name, Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius.
They’re talking, which is a good sign. I hope it happens.
‘What if Superman was your dad?’ Comics legend Mark Millar on Jupiter’s Legacy
The Adventures of Luther Arkwright has been optioned for a TV show. An option doesn’t mean it’ll get made of course but it’d be cool.
I just saw the trailer and you beat me to it.
Yes I have read the comic and it’s very good. The trailer looks pretty true to the book so far.
All the deadly virus stuff is in the original which came out years ago so a timely coincidence with the pandemic.
Crazy that there’s a trailer for this, and that it’s out in June. Really flew in under the radar.
The trailer is a bit too saccharine, but I loved the books, and some of the visuals are straight from the comic. I hope they don’t play it too safe (which it feels like, maybe too much aimed at kids) and also go with the more adult and horrific aspects of the books. Definitely looking forward to seeing what they did with it, anyway.

Doctor Who Star and Filmmaker Noel Clarke Accused of Being Serial Sexual Predator
Noel Clarke, a prolific actor, writer, and filmmaker in the U.K. who is perhaps best known for his work on Doctor Who, has been accused by 20 women of serial sexual predation. As reported in The Guardian, the women allege that Clarke has an established history of sexual harassment, bullying, unwanted groping and touching, verbal abuse, and professional misconduct dating back to 2004, in addition to a pattern of secretly filming the nude auditions of female actors. Among the detailed allegations against Clarke, whom The Guardian characterizes as a “serial abuser of women,” his victims claim his substantial power in the British film-and-television industry has made it easy for him to “prey on and harass female colleagues” regardless of their age or rank.
Ugh.
I’ve read the full Guardian report. It’s pretty damning. He’s now had his BAFTA membership suspended.
the nude auditions of female actors
It’s sad that women still feel they need to do these things. Despite any amount of coercion or deception, women should not feel they have to do these things. How does the amount of skin shown affect the talent and skill of any actor? If I am too naïve, I don’t mind staying that way.
The stories about Clarke have brought up issues about John Barrowman as well – there’s a video from a convention panel (I’m not sure when from, but it was tweeted in 2019) where Clarke admiringly talks about how Barrowman would constantly get his dick out on set and touch things and people with it – something Barrowman is well known in the industry for and open about doing, apparently.
I read the Guardian article about Clarke last night (well, most of it – it just got too grim after a while). Saw a news report about it on the BBC this morning and wasn’t impressed how they spent more time on Clarke’s denial than the actual allegations. Even if that is legal arse-covering in the reporting, it served to minimise and undermine the story. They didn’t even mention that 20 women had come forward, making it seem like a relatively minor he said/she said.
He also confesses to one of the accusations (because the woman in question raised it up the organisation at the time so it’ll be recorded and undeniable).
The 20 accusers thing is the main thing. We have to initially believe any accusation but they can be false, I have personally seen a rape accusation from a rather disturbed woman I knew that was undeniably false. I know because I was with the guy at the time as his alibi and it was all retracted.
That can happen. I don’t think it can happen 20 times from a variety of women from all kinds of different backgrounds and have nothing particularly to gain. As far as I can see none are threatening a civil case, which are much less common in the UK than the US and pay out far less money.
‘What if Superman was your dad?’ Comics legend Mark Millar on Jupiter’s Legacy
Interesting…
It will be nice to see a MM product. Good for him.
On a side note:
We had the Boys, Wandavision, Falcon, the Snydercut JLA, the Black Widow movie coming, Jupiter, trailers for future Marvel movies… It is a great time to be comic book fan I will admit, but after a while, wouldn’t it all get saturated and the viewer get fatigued?
I haven’t even gotten into all the streaming services of all the Star Wars shows, Star Trek…
I say it can all be a little too much.
Maybe Scorcese and Speilberg have a point.
but after a while, wouldn’t it all get saturated and the viewer get fatigued?
We’ve been asking about SH saturation for the last 10 years, soooo… doesn’t seem like it.
The thing is, SH can be many things, so yeah, you can have shows like the Boys, or like Doom Patrol, or like the CW crap, etc… same goes for movies… although I would agree that the Marvel stuff is getting a bit tiresome, but your milleage may vary… fortunately there’s a lot more stuff other than the MCU/Disney fare out there.
I wonder how something like MoS/BvS and Watchmen and those type of more serious and darker stories might’ve been received if they came out now, after 15 years of MCU stuff… I think people would’ve been a bit more receptive to something different now than they were then when the MCU was a lot more fresh.
We had the Boys, Wandavision, Falcon, the Snydercut JLA, the Black Widow movie coming, Jupiter, trailers for future Marvel movies… It is a great time to be comic book fan
Well those aren’t comic books, they’re TV shows and movies, so I’d say they’re pretty moot regarding how good it is or isn’t to be a comic book fan at the moment.

True story about Thundar the Barbarian: when Cartoon Network launched in the UK (around 92 or 93) it was essentially just a Hanna-Barbera archive channel for its first few years. So I got passingly familiar with a lot of old HB shows, some of which were probably quite niche even back when they were made: Funky Phantom, Jabberjaw, Punkin’ Puss and Mushmouse, Mighty Man and Yukk, the Galaxy Trio etc.
Anyway, one of these was Thundar, which in the opening titles explains how the moon crashed into the Earth in the year 1994. Which wasn’t the far-off future time it seemed when the show was made, it was now next year-ish. So cue 6 year old me being genuinely a bit terrified at the start of 1994 of the prospect of the moon crashing into the planet.
I can’t remember at what point I decided it probably wasn’t going to happen.

This is like when I spent 29th August 1997 nervously pacing around thinking “surely not”.
New ‘Law & Order’ Spinoff ‘For the Defense’ Picked Up Straight to Series at NBC
Always a new L&O spinoff
Funny… Law and Oder: SVU… every case is a sexual assault. I watch it sometimes because of Ice T, the police investigation in the cases, the courtroom drama and legal chess game. There is a fictional college called Hudson University that has been used in so many episodes where the investigation is campus date rape, hazing, fraternity gang rape at a party in a dorm… You would think by now, everyone would get the point: Don’t send your daughter to that school.

Apparently the embargo for Jupiter’s Legacy isn’t up until after the show is available on Friday morning, which isn’t a great sign. Netflix is always tight with these, but most of their recent shows have allowed a few days for reviews at least (Shadow and Bone reviews were up the Wednesday before, for instance).

January 1, 1995?
I mean, I’d like to think so, that I got to that day and felt a great sense of relief, but to be honest, I’m probably manufacturing that and had likely completely forgotten all about it by then. I moved house and changed school about 3 times in 1994, there was a lot competing for my attention.

I don’t know, when I listen to the Pilot TV podcast they are forever cursing Netflix for this. It’s almost a catchphrase for them now that ‘we wanted to review [insert show title] but fucking Netflix wouldn’t let us preview it” (they swear a lot on that podcast). The Witcher I remember had the same embargo to just the day of launch. It’s showing with a 67% from critics and 91% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes which isn’t bad.
Often a late embargo with films is because something is a bit shit but it seems rather more random behaviour from the streamers as you say.
Anyway, we shall see for ourselves soon enough.
Game of Thrones: HBO Releases First Photos of House of the Dragon Spinoff
HBO has released the first images from Game of Thrones‘ first spinoff, House of the Dragon, production of which got underway last month.
The primary image above is of Emma D’Arcy’s Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen. Scroll down to check out the two additional pics.
The release comes roughly two weeks after HBO offered the first behind-the-scenes photo from the show, of the actors gathered for an in-person, socially distanced table read.
In an interview in February, HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told TVLine that the sequel, which will focus on Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors, would begin production this spring.
“They’re prepping,” Bloys said, adding that showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal “have been writing for a long time” and have drafts of all 10 Season 1 episodes “in various stages.”
House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the original Thrones series and will follow Daenerys’ ancestors as House Targaryen begins its historic downfall. Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Condal (Colony) created the prequel; Sapochnik served as director on some of Thrones‘ biggest episodes.
The cast so far includes Paddy Considine (The Outsider) as King Viserys, Sonoya Mizuno (Devs) as Prince Daemons’ unlikely ally Mysaria, Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) as the knight Ser Criston Cole and Eve Best (Nurse Jackie) as Lord Corlys’ wife Princess Rhaenys Velaryon.
More allegations about Noel Clarke, from his time on Doctor Who.
Joanne Hayes was a costume assistant on series 1 of the revived Doctor Who, shot in 2004. She alleges that Clarke sexually harassed her in his trailer in August 2004 after she assisted him with his costume.
…
Another woman, Jenna (not her real name), was a runner and driver on the early seasons of the revived Doctor Who, shot in the mid-2000s. As part of her role, she was required to drive Clarke to and from set. During these car journeys, she alleges, Clarke touched her inappropriately. She said he would touch her hand when it was on the gear stick, and grabbed her leg when she was driving.
…
A Doctor Who actor, who asked to remain anonymous, has told the Guardian she was also sexually harassed by Clarke in the early seasons of the show. “He made advances on me,” she said, “regularly asking me if I wanted a ‘piece of his dark chocolate’.” When she rejected his advances, the actor said, Clarke badmouthed her to people in the industry.
And at conventions too, which means this expands out into the existing quagmire of safeguarding of guests, attendees and volunteers at cons.
Clarke also stands accused of behaving inappropriately at an external function related to his role in Doctor Who. In May 2016, Lisa Graham volunteered at Bournemouth Film and Comic Con, held at the Bournemouth International Centre. She was assigned to help Clarke sign autographs and take photographs with paying fans. At this event, Graham alleges that Clarke sexually harassed her and touched her inappropriately under the table they were both sitting at.
…
At the end of the day, as they were packing away, Graham mentioned the harassment to her supervisor. The supervisor laughed away the remarks, Graham recalled, and did not appear to take it seriously.
BFCC is a Showmasters event, so hopefully someone’s going to ask them about what they intend to do about this.

‘Black-ish’ Renewed for Eighth and Final Season at ABC
“Black-ish” has been renewed for Season 8 at ABC, which will also be the show’s last.
The announcement was made by series creator Kenya Barris on Friday. “To ALL the people in the world I love, honor, respect and care for it is both exciting and bittersweet to share that black-ish been RENEWED by ABC for it’s EIGHTH… and FINAL SEASON,” Barris wrote in part on Instagram. “In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for – and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!”
The series originally debuted on ABC in 2014 and has aired over 150 episodes at the time of this publishing. It stars Anthony Anderson as Andre “Dre” Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson Jr., Miles Brown as Jack Johnson, Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson, Laurence Fishburne as Pops, Jenifer Lewis as Ruby, Peter Mackenzie as Mr. Stevens, Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy, Jeff Meacham as Josh, and Katlyn Nichol as Olivia.
“Black-ish” was created by Barris and is executive produced by Barris, Courtney Lilly, Laura Gutin Peterson, Anderson, Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins and Michael Petok. The series is produced by ABC Signature.
The show has proven to be a critical success for ABC throughout its run, racking up 19 Emmy nominations to date. Those include multiple nominations for both Anderson and Ellis Ross, with the show also receiving multiple nominations for best comedy series.
“Black-ish” proved so successful that it has inspired multiple spinoffs. “Grown-ish,” which stars Shahidi, is set to debut its fourth season on Freeform this summer. Meanwhile, the prequel “Mixed-ish,” which details the early life of Ellis Ross’ character, is awaiting word on a third season. It was reported last year that another spinoff starring Fishburne and Lewis called “Old-ish” is also in development at ABC.
Barris is still involved with the show but famously exited his overall deal with ABC Signature (then ABC Studios) in 2018 for a massive new deal at Netflix reportedly worth nine figures. Under that deal, he currently stars in the Netflix series “#BlackAF,” which he also created and executive produces. It was reported last year, however, that Barris was exiting that deal for a production venture with ViacomCBS. Barris appeared during the ViacomCBS investor day presentation in February to give details on his first project with the company, which he described as “an intimate look at contemporary relationships.”

It is Pamela Anderson’s single defining characteristic.
Well boobs are easy to fake, which is why that didn’t phase me, but the facial features in those pictures (the ones above, not in the article) must be photoshopped or something, because you can’t thin up facial features like that, unless you go for a nosejob I suppose…
