Agreement reached for NHL players to participate in 2022 Olympics in Beijing – ESPN

The NHL and NHLPA have come to an agreement with the IIHF and IOC that will allow NHL players to participate in the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The agreement does carry an opt-out clause: The NHL and NHLPA can pull out of the Olympics should COVID-19 conditions worsen, or if the 2021-22 NHL schedule is disrupted by cancellations and the league feels it needs to use the Olympic break to make up games. The deadline for the opt-out is believed to be in early January, sources told ESPN.

The NHL did not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, ending a run of five consecutive tournaments in which the league allowed its players to appear. However, NHL players earned a massive win when they signed a new collective bargaining agreement with the league in 2020: The CBA included language to allow players to participate in the 2022 and 2026 Olympic Games — contingent on an agreement with the IIHF and IOC.

The NHL, NHLPA, IIHF and IOC had been negotiating on and off all summer — and bypassed some arbitrary deadlines — but finally came to an agreement on Friday.

NHL players have uniformly fought to return to the Olympic games.

“As any Canadian kid, your dream is to play in the NHL, and then your dream is to play for Team Canada at the Olympics. I think that’s always how it is, and I’m no different,” Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid told reporters last week. “Obviously, with not going to the Olympics, it’s been a long time since we’ve been able to represent our country at a best-on-best tournament. So, my last time would have been a world juniors [in 2015], so it’s been a long time, and I’m certainly looking forward to, I guess, having the ability to chase down a spot and hopefully make the team and represent my country at the Olympics.”

As part of the agreement, the IIHF and IOC are picking up all travel and insurance costs for NHL players and will cover for players’ guests if they are allowed to attend as well. A big hang-up was COVID insurance: While the NHL and NHLPA found a provider, the IIHF and IOC did not want to cover for additional COVID insurance, so it will be up to each individual player to determine whether he secures that or not.

The NHL is scheduled to break from games from Thursday, February 3 through Tuesday, February 22. All-Star weekend in Las Vegas — beginning on Feb. 4 — will happen whether NHL players participate in the Olympics or not.

Olympians who attend All-Star weekend will leave directly from Las Vegas and travel to Beijing.

All players who participate in the Olympics will be required to take the vaccine; however, there could be very limited exemptions on a case-by-case basis. Multiple league sources have told ESPN “an overwhelming majority” of NHL players are already vaccinated.

One thing the NHL wanted from an Olympic agreement was expanded media and advertising rights.

In a February 2020 meeting with the IIHF, the NHL outlined some of the things it wanted — NHL logos and advertisements featured in Olympic games, the ability to use Olympic highlights on NHL Network or NHL.com — which the league hoped would help promote the game.

However, sources say the NHL was largely denied most of its requests. The climate has changed since that February 2020 meeting; the NHL parted with broadcast partner NBC, which also carries the Olympics. Also, sources involved in the talks said the IIHF and IOC knew they had leverage considering NHL players have been so vocal about their desire to return to the Olympics.

Participating Olympic teams must submit their “long lists” of players by Oct. 15. The provisional playing rosters will be announced by January. National teams are not allowed to host in-person orientation camps, but they can host virtual meetings before the games.

According to sources, players are being told to prepare for strict protocols during the Olympics. That includes a bubble environment enforced by the Chinese government, daily testing, significant restrictions on interactions and movements, and the possibility of wearing GPS location devices to assist with contact tracing and ensure protocol compliance.

I don’t like most of these sports in the Olympics to be honest.

The Olympics should in any event be the pinnacle of achievement.

In football, tennis, golf, baseball nobody believes that. These NHL guys will be like, this is a fun interlude but we want to win the NHL more. The tennis guys would rather win Wimbledon, the golf guys the Masters.

    I’d kick them all out.

It’s a shame for such a talented sportsperson to be at the stage where they want to give up on their career in their prime, but it’s understandable if it’s taking a big toll.

I do wonder though whether this latest development is more symptomatic of having the big press conference immediately after the event when she’s going to be at her lowest ebb. It seems like she lost her composure during the game and is probably going to be in a pretty bad place mentally when she has to face the public.

It’s a difficult one. Obviously mental strength and resilience is a big part of sport at the highest level, so to some extent having that tested is part of the job. But I think that should be tested on the tennis court rather than in the press conferences afterwards, and based on previous comments it feels like a lot of the public facing aspects of the job are what she finds most difficult.

It comes with the territory of being a sports star but it’s obviously not particularly helpful to the player and it must take a huge effort to retain your composure, especially after a high-profile loss.

I hope she bounces back from the defeat and carries on playing.

Just watched Raducanu’s performance in the US open. Pretty great. What a star. I definitely see the argument that women’s tennis is more engaging to watch than the men’s game.

The NFL started and I can’t get into it yet.

It is only the first week. I will most likely get into it a few weeks down the road when all the teams are in full swing.

So, Tom Brady is still winning. I didn’t think he still had something left but he does. He has this diet of vegetables and this kale juice stuff and a workout regimen that carries him well into his 40’s. Still time and aging will catch up to him. His performance outside of the Patriots prove that it was all mostly him and a little bit of Bellichek. Bellichek is a proven cheater spying on the other team’s plays. Bellichek is smart, but he is no genius like Bill Walsh back in the day.

Is Brady the GOAT? Depends on how you define it. IMHO, the GOAT means that you can take the player and displace him in previous eras and that player would still excel and dominate. I don’t know if Brady could have cut it in the NFL back in the 60’s, 70’s or even the 80’s the way the game was played. Granted Brady is the “winningest” QB to ever play the game, but is he the GOAT in the way I defined it?

  • #74429

What a star. I definitely see the argument that women’s tennis is more engaging to watch than the men’s game.

I think the men’s game is a lot better than it used to be. In the 2000s Sampras era it was incredibly tedious, everything about the power serve and aces and almost no rally play. With the current generation the entertainment gap is smaller but I’d be ok with saying women’s tennis is more fun.

What the women’s game definitely has is unpredictability. Men’s finals have in general been shared between 4 players over the past 10 years, the women’s game you feel pretty much anyone has got a chance, as we saw there with a 150th ranked winner and two teens in the final.

    A rant if you will:

Both the NY Jets and NY Giants are 0-2. The Jets were blown out yesterday. <Sigh>

I then see a little of the Baltimore-Chiefs game last night and see those two teams go at it.
A real scoring battle royale of high-powered offenses that can score at will.

This all gives me the feeling that everyone else is driving a Porsche/Ferrari/Lamborghini
and we NY fans have to get by with a very rudimentary used Model T.

    LOL

You know what’s got to be a kick in the head for the Jets? The fact that their former QB, Sam Darnold, who they traded to the Carolina Panthers just won his third straight game last night.

The Panthers are now 3-0 to start the season and Darnold has never played any smoother in the pros.

As a Jet fan, you get the feeling that once a Jet player goes somewhere else, they play way better. It would also mean that the grass is greener and just about everyone else does football right EXCEPT for NY.

I think the NFL did itself a world of good over the weekend with some exciting games.

You had Justin Tucker’s lucky bounce in Detroit; Matt Stafford outdueling Brady in LA; The back and forth OT game in Vegas; weaknesses appearing in KC; and the motivated Aaron Rodgers leading his his team to a win at the buzzer.

With both prohibitive favorites losing yesterday maybe people will tune in to see how they recover and if they do in fact recover their spots at the top of the NFL.

I HOPE they use this confidence to inspire them going forward but there is no way in the hell their schedule can get any easier.

I was referring to most of the undefeated teams at this point. It’s a very interesting list. Raiders, Broncos, Panthers, Cardinals and Rams. Some are certainly more surprising than others, and some also have had very easy schedules so far. But I still find it to be a refreshing list.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm, Al. I’ve been a Met fan since the 1969 season.

This year, the team was in first place for more than half the season, holding that position well past the All-Star Game, largely on the shoulders of their starting pitchers. In spite of the influx of money from their new owners, the team does not have a single consistently dependable hitter. Not one. Look how many games they’ve lost by a single run. For the last decade we could blame their failures on the stinginess of the Wilpon family (former owners), but we don’t have that excuse anymore. This comes down to a team that has no heart.

  • #76039

True but it is only the first season. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it did take a while for a team like the Cubs to build a develop a talented team that won a few years ago.

The Mets will get there like they were in the 80s.
It will take time, not overnight

    Let’s go Mets!

I’ve been a Met fan since the 1969 season.

that is your problem right there. Nowhere to go but down after watching the Amazings.

the Yanks joy did not last long. they lost the play in game to the red sox(boo).

  • #76120

There’s a perverse joy in truly following you local team though even if they aren’t the best. Here in Malaysia they follow stuff like the EPL and F1 and with rarely any local involvement (there was once a Malaysian F1 driver and Petronas sponsor teams) they just grab onto who wins the most when they get into the sport.

They get confused by any Brits who come over and don’t support Man U or Liverpool but Cardiff or Brighton or Bristol City or whoever is their local team. The secret we know though is that with all the lows they will never match our highs. No Man Utd supporter watching them win their 5th EPL title in a row can ever enjoy that as much as Cardiff winning a Championship playoff final against QPR to make the top league for the first time in 50 years. The suffering for many years brings an unimagined level of joy when it doesn’t go wrong every now and again.

  • #76124

Yeah, it’s why the Leicester City victory a few years back was such a big deal and such a great story. Coming from that city I followed all their ups and downs over the years, and for friends and family members who were much bigger football fans than I am, that win was an indescribably special moment.

    GOAT

It is a debate in most sports as which athlete is the GOAT. The term also has different definitions.

One GOAT definition is which athlete has the best all time statistics, most championship wins.
Another (and my favorite) cant really be done, but if you were to take the athlete and put him/her in any era of the sport they would still dominate.

Many said here that Tom Brady is the GOAT because he has the most SB wins. I give him credit for some of it (especially the last one with Tampa) and keeping himself in great shape in his 40s, his diet and regimen. But… if you took him to play in the early 70’s, would he still be dominant? I really don’t know.

Same with Lebron and Kobe. Would they be dominant in the 70s when play was a lot tougher? Would Steph Curry be given space to hoist his long shots?

Old timers like Jerry West, Jabbar etc. who are still alive say that the players now would have had to adjust their game. Chamberlin once said that Dennis Rodman (who could only rebound) would have been exploited because he wasn’t that great of a dribbler, ball handler, etc. Also, the ones only citing the modern players don’t take into consideration the players of previous eras like Oscar Robertson, Pearl Monroe, etc.

It is interesting when it is viewed that way. You could say the same about baseball players, soccer (real football), Pele, and so on.

    Sorry for the rant.

It is cathartic to post though…

  • #76931

In competitive individual sports (swimming, running, gymnastics) it is unfair to compare athletes today with their counterparts from 10 or 20 or 50 years ago, since today’s athletes have the advantage of better uniforms, footwear, and training equipment than was available in previous generations. The science behind a running shoe enables Usain Bolt to improve his running speed compared to what Carl Lewis had to work with in the 1930s. So who is the better athlete?

Tom Brady is, without a doubt, a better athlete than any QB in the 1970s. That’s not a knock on any of those QBs, but Brady simply has better equipment, training, conditioning and probably discipline. Could Brady take the beating he’d likely get from defenses in the 70s? Doubtful. Rules were looser so he’d be subject to constant, nastier hits than are allowed today. No way he could have had the same longevity back then.

But yeah it’s hard to compare the different eras. Still, I doubt Bradshaw and Montana would be as successful in today’s game where QBs are running 50 yards a game AND throwing 60 yard bombs downfield.

So in the NFL it is only 16 games (it might be 17 starting this year. I could be wrong. I’ll have to check).

Once a team starts out 1-5 (and they have to win 4-5 straight just to get to the break even mark… ), it is time to already start thinking ahead to next season and beyond. I say this given both NY teams and how awful they are. They are both rebuilding, but you have to wonder if there is any progress. At this point, you have to look hard as to which player you can keep, who is expendable and won’t be back, and so on.

Another lost football season in NY…

AND… It is actually worse because the NY stations are under obligation to show both teams and not other games in the other regions. I can only see the other games from the highlights or the nationwide games in evenings.

Florida Panthers coach Joel Quenneville meets with NHL commissioner over involvement in Chicago Blackhawks’ sexual abuse case – ESPN

Former Chicago coach Joel Quenneville met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday concerning his involvement in the Blackhawks’ sexual abuse case, while Kyle Beach accused the team on social media of trying to “destroy my case in court.”

Quenneville, currently the coach of the Florida Panthers, met with Bettman for about two hours in New York while accompanied by Panthers team president Matt Caldwell and general manager Bill Zito.

Beach on Wednesday came forward as “John Doe,” the former Blackhawks player who filed a lawsuit against the team for mishandling his sexual assault allegations. The suit led the Blackhawks to commission an investigation by the law firm Jenner & Block, which looked into allegations that former video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted and harassed Beach during the team’s 2010 Stanley Cup run.

The investigation, of which the results were released Tuesday, revealed that Quenneville was aware of the situation and took part in at least one meeting regarding the allegations during the 2010 postseason. Quenneville had previously said he learned of the allegations in the summer of 2021 “through the media.”

According to recollections from former Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman in the investigation report, Quenneville, after learning of the Aldrich allegations, “shook his head and said that it was hard for the team to get to where they were [the playoffs] and they could not deal with this issue now.”

Bowman on Tuesday resigned after the investigation was made public. The team also was fined $2 million.

“I have immense gratitude for the outpouring of endless love and support that has come through within the past 48 hours,” Beach posted to Twitter on Thursday. “Although the results of the private investigation have been released, and the Blackhawks have apologized, my battle is really just beginning as the Blackhawks continue to attempt to destroy my case in court.”

In an interview with TSN on Wednesday, Beach said there was no way Quenneville was unaware of the allegations.

“I’ve witnessed meetings, right after I reported it to [Blackhawks mental skills coach] James Gary, that were held in Joel Quenneville’s office. There’s absolutely no way that he can deny knowing it,” Beach said.

The Panthers are 7-0-0 under Quenneville, who said Wednesday that he addressed the case with his team and said he didn’t think it would be an issue because “I think we try to eliminate all distractions.” He went on to coach against the Bruins that night, not taking questions from the media afterward.

The Panthers, who next play at the Detroit Red Wings on Friday, said earlier this week that they would have no further comment until after Quenneville’s meeting with Bettman.

    Disgusting story.

I’ve read articles where they say Quenneville found out after he was called into a meeting with the higher-ups including the team president immediately after winning the Conference Finals in 2010 (next stop the Finals, where they went on to beat Philadelphia).
He most definitely ‘didn’t need the distraction’ and was protective of the abuser, wanting it to all go away.

That fucking bullshit needs to stop and a complete change in mindset.
The ‘winning is all’ mentality only encourages everyone to bully the victim into silence.
I don’t know how contracts works, especially when he now coaches another team, but if the league can, then they should come down hard.

    Edit: update – Quennville resigns

Chicago Blackhawks owner asks to have name of convicted sex offender removed from Stanley Cup

Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz wrote a letter to the Hockey Hall of Fame asking for the name of former video coach Brad Aldrich to be removed from the Stanley Cup.

In the letter, obtained by ESPN, Wirtz asks the Hall to “consider x-ing out” Aldrich’s name because “while nothing can undo what he did, leaving his name on the most prestigious trophy in sports seems wrong.”

Wirtz asked “out of respect to each and every player who sacrificed to earn their place in history” that the Blackhawks would like the name removed, as it is the franchise’s “moral belief” that a convicted sex offender does not belong on the Stanley Cup.

Aldrich, who was with the team during its run to the Stanley Cup in 2010, sexually assaulted former player Kyle Beach during that run, according to an investigative report released by the team this week looking into the organization’s mishandling of the case. The report found that senior leaders on the Blackhawks did not immediately act when they learned of the allegations, and allowed Aldrich to resign instead of partaking in an investigation.

Three years later, Aldrich was convicted in Michigan of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct involving a 16-year-old.

The scandal has had far-reaching fallout already. Stan Bowman resigned from his post as Blackhawks GM and president of hockey ops, while Joel Quenneville, Chicago’s coach in 2010, resigned as head coach of the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

“Names have been engraved and then changed for years,” Wirtz wrote in the letter, which is addressed to Lanny MacDonald, the chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame. “Taking a stand on the unforgivable behavior of Aldrich should include erasing his name from the Cup.”

In the letter to MacDonald, Wirtz cites precedent of removing names from the Stanley Cup stemming from a case involving former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington.

“The name ‘Basil Pocklington’ is stamped over on the 1983-84 Stanley Cup,” Wirtz wrote. “The owner of the Oilers, as you are aware, put his father’s name onto the trophy list, even though his father had nothing to do with the team or its victory. The NHL demanded the name be notably X’d out. That decision, among others, reflects the Cup’s storied history of engraving mistakes and errors that have ended up enshrined in silver, or been corrected after the fact.”

    No love for Rodgers?

I have no respect for Rodgers after he pulled this shit. Unlike Kyrie Irving, the Brooklyn Nets player who made it clear that he’s not getting the vaccination and instead is sitting out the start of the baskeball season (and not collecting that portion of his salary), Rodgers made some vague claim about being immune and thus risked the health of his teammates and coaches and management, as well as other NFL professionals he came into contact with during the first eight weeks of the current season. There’s just no excuse for his blatant dishonesty.

Add to the fact that Rodgers got his medical advice from Joe Rogan, any possible respect I may have for him is completely gone.

I love this comment from Robert Reich:

My previous view of Rodgers was quite high. I enjoyed his on field behaviour, his geeky indulgences and his apparent intelligence (based on appearances on Jeopardy).

Now he provedΒ the old adage correct. “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

If he had stayed at home and kept his mouth shut, I may have kept some positive opinion of him but going on a podcast and saying you are following the advice of a wackjob radio guy just blew it out the water. Rodgers had been scoring points as the best QB because Brady had a strange diet but those ideas are long gone.

Yeah, Rodgers was one of my favorite QBs. I’ve followed him since college, but I’ve lost pretty much all respect for him now. Being unvaxxed is one thing, but lying about it and then whining when people call you out on those lies while taking advice from idiots like Joe Rogan…it’s just gross.

    it’s just gross.

What’s gross is the “punishment” that the NFL is considering. And what they are NOT considering. I think a 4-game suspension would be an appropriate response — it’s not a year-long suspension, but it’s long enough that it could hurt his chances of making it to the Superbowl again this year. Is the commissioner really that concerned about upsetting Green Bay fans or the anti-vaxx faction? For a sport that epitomizes testosterone, the NFL certainly looks like a bunch of pussies right now.

Yeah, the NFL is pretty awful. I enjoy the game, but the organization sucks. Goodell has long been terrible. People accused and even convicted of terrible crimes get to keep playing in the league. Serial cheaters get slapped on the wrist. Now people violating covid protocol are getting a slap on the wrist. Meanwhile, Kaepernick got blackballed just for kneeling, guys like Josh Gordon get endlessly suspended for smoking weed and Goodell is refusing to make public the whole of the investigation that led to the end of Gruden’s career (we all know Gruden can’t be the only one with a damning email trail). It’s all a big joke.

When Gruden first got fired, they talked about an email chain between someone who is now out of football and someone in the NFL discipline office. The following day NFL came out and said they had determined that they were any more emails that needed to be investigated. hmmmmm

Kaepernick and Gordon are men of color and receive significant punishments that some might say are out of proportion to their “infractions”. Rodgers is a white, SuperBowl-winning quarterback and gets a fine. I’m not saying the NFL administration is racist, but then again, I don’t really have to say it.

As for Gruden: The Super Bowl he won his first year with Tampa Bay (about 20 years ago)… That Tampa Bay team was developed over the previous years by Tony Dungy. Management felt Dungy went as far as he could so they let him go and brought in Gruden. Gruden took over and won it all with Dungy’s players and the foundation he laid.

When Gruden took over the Raiders, he got rid of a lot of black players on the team, like former head coach Chip Kelly did with the Eagles.

The NFL has the Rooney Rule of interviewing a minority candidate but there is a work around. They have looked into changes in the roster like with the Raiders and Eagles. Some effort is there but still, they have to do more.

I was wondering when Colorado would say ‘enough is enough’ and get it together.

My brother texted me today about last nights game and has officially joined the ‘Fire Everyone’ club.
I wouldn’t do any knee-jerk reaction during the season, but Vancouver’s response better be positive or a ‘clean-house’ mentality must apply (part of me hope that happens no matter what).

  • #78366

On the other hand, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how The Shark’s have been playing this season (although I now call them the Sharcudaries due to covid causing half their team to just be AHL dude’s). After the last couple of seasons and the endless nightmare that is Evander Kane, I was expecting the team to be hot garbage. Yet they’ve been surprisingly competitive. Even during this aforementioned stretch where 7 players have been sidelined with covid (thankfully everyone is vaccinated so hopefully no one had any real complications from it other than keeping away from the team for two weeks).

Do I expect them to continue this? Not sure. But it’s an entertaining ride so far. Which definitely wasn’t the case in the last two years.

    Amen @chris-d

I am glad there is someone else her who can compare eras and can say most likely what Brady would have been like in the 70s.

I still give credit to Brady though for his regimen and strict dieting even in the off season. He got this far into his 40s and still won a Super Bowl. Granted he isn’t what he was 10-15 years ago (who is?) but he still has enough left to play. Now he is facing the Giants this weekend.
    ————————–

As for comparing eras, I remember Wilt Chamberlin looking at the Chicago Bulls dynasty and he complimented their play, Jordan’s will to win. He did say that Dennis Rodman’s specialty is being a very mean rebounder, but he is one dimensional as Dennis isn’t that great as a ball handler. Chamberlin said that if Dennis played in the early 70’s and other teams knew that, they would play their defenses in a way that Dennis would be forced to dribble a lot and have the ball and he would be exposed as weak. (It is something like if they know you dribble righthanded and are weak dribbling lefthanded, they will position themselves forcing you to go lefthanded a lot.)

What bothers me is that when sports fans today think of GOAT, they only refer to players they saw growing up in the 90s and not that much further back.

    Wow…

I have to say that Enes is NOT WRONG. As much as I liked Michael Jordan and his iron like determination to win all those championships back in the day, he did turn somewhat of a blind eye to the sweatshop situation that went into the production of those Nike sneakers with his logo and name on them, as well as how high priced they were leading to all the gun violence that went into stealing and robbing others in the streets over them.

The same goes for Lebron James, although lately he is a little more outspoken on social issues.

    https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/nba-star-enes-kanter-claims-michael-jordan-has-not-done-anything-for-the-black-community-074434162.html

This is part of a much larger issue concerning capitalism and how corporations really make their big profit margins. Or how do you think they make all that money!

  • #79181

Should the top players be held to higher standards?

Lebron struck a player roughly half his age in the mouth with his fist yesterday. the young guy prolly grew up worshipping Lebron and was stunned when his idol broke his eye socket.Β  He went a little nuts and started running around after Lebron. The court was a mess. Stewart(the kid)’s teammates were trying to restrain and calm him down while the Lakers rushed him with the lame “hold me back I’m gonna kick his ass” comments given from behind security and team officials. It’s disgusting. Writers and pundits started blaming Stewart in attempts to get noticed by LeBron.

Anthony Davis will never be a true star. First, he pussies out of NO because he was unable of leading a team. Yesterday, he defends his actions by saying he was defending his man. His man was not the one with the bloody face and his man is also 6’8″ 250 and strong as an ox.

Lebron, imo, will be the Pete Rose of the NBA. Pete was very successful but disliked even before the gambling. Fortunately, the NBA also has its own Derek Jeter in Steph Curry so that people have a bright side to think of when thinking of the NBA.

p.s. I’m biased. Stewart went to the same H.S. I did.

There was a tweet saying that is not the way to treat high paying customers. What they are really saying is that fans can say whatever insulting or even racist thing they want and a player has no right to defend himself. It seems they don’t like him having the power to evict fans.

So the Patriots were incredible the past two decades. Many teams logically reasoned that if they can get an assistant coach from there, they could be a dynasty as well.

There was a graphic the other day of all the head coaching records of former assistant coaches from the Patriots. Not very good.

Maybe they should have asked to include Brady in their deals. πŸ˜‚

Justice of the Peace Pro Tem Robert Walsh said he would issue a written order to invoke Nevada privacy laws to limit information available to prosecutors.

Pro Tem meaning this guy is a substitute judge. I get HIPAA laws and everything but the prosecutors are not the general public. Also he moved hearings related to the case to March 10. Is this Vegas, the NFL or both trying to manipulate this case? Ruggs is no longer a member of the NFL and his passenger is just a civilian. hmmmm

  • #80539

I don’t mind them. This shitshow had to come to an end.
Coach Brucey is signed for this season and next. That’s fine.
Rutherford as President? Well, if it helps that idiot owner find a proper GM, then fine.
But a proper GM with a vision and only his hands on the wheel.
If Rutherford starts making moves, it’s game over.

Something had to be done, but the most important hire is yet to do and will dictate our fate.

NHL Team Values 2021: New York Rangers Become Hockey’s First $2 Billion Team – Forbes.com

The ice is hot, with the average team value soaring 32% and the sale of the Pittsburgh Penguins for $900 million.

Last December, with the pandemic shortening the regular season to 56 games and keeping most arenas empty, Forbes released its annual NHL team valuations, pegging the league average at $653 million. That represented a 2% dip from the year beforeβ€”no huge surprise seeing as, by our count, the league’s teams were about to lose an average of $39 million each during the 2020-21 season (in the sense of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, before taking into account their share of the Seattle Kraken’s expansion fee).

But in the time since, even as the pandemic has lingered, hockey has heated up. In our new set of valuations, the average is up to $865 million, an increase of 32% from last year and the biggest jump since the 50% gain of 2013, when the league signed its massive Canadian television deal. At the top of the ranking, the New York Rangers have climbed 21% since last year, becoming the first NHL team worth $2 billion while claiming the No. 1 spot for the seventh year in a row.

To see what a difference a year makes, look no further than Fenway Sports Group’s $900 million purchase of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which represents a new benchmark for hockey valuations. Before this deal, most transactions for controlling stakes, scant as they have been, valued NHL teams at about four times revenue. Tom Dundon bought the Carolina Hurricanes in 2018 for $420 million, or 3.9 times revenue. The revenue multiple was 4.2 in Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky’s $485 million acquisition of the New York Islanders in 2016. The Arizona Coyotes, meanwhile, have changed hands twice over the past seven years: Andrew Barroway paid $305 million (or 3.3 times revenue) for the Coyotes in 2014, and Alex Meruelo paid $300 million (just 3 times revenue) for the team in 2019.

By comparison, the Penguins deal values the team at 4.5 times projected revenue for the 2021-22 season (excluding the playoffs). Speaking at a recent Sports Business Journal conference, Fenway Sports Group cofounder and chairman Tom Werner said the allure of the Penguins included the team’s iconic brand and opportunities to increase revenue at PPG Paints Arena and the nearby real estate development.

Yes, team sales have been few and far between in the NHL and have mostly involved financially challenged franchises. But even the Toronto Maple Leafs were valued at only 4.4 times revenue as part of Bell Canada and Rogers Communications’ acquisition of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment in 2012.

Bankers tell Forbes that there are a few reasons for the multiple increase. One is the league’s seven-year U.S. media deals with ESPN and Turner that began this season and will pay the NHL an average of $625 million a year, versus the average of $300 million the league was getting from NBC for its TV rights and ESPN for streaming only. Another reason for the rise in multiples: new arenas that throw off lots of cash from fancy seating, advertising and concessions. The Penguins’ home, PPG Paints Arena, opened about a decade ago. Rogers Place, home of the Edmonton Oilers, was christened in 2016. The New York Islanders moved into a brand-new arena this seasonβ€”accounting for their 83% increase in value, to $950 millionβ€”as did the expansion Seattle Kraken, who paid a $650 million fee to enter the league and who have begun their first season valued at $875 million on the heels of strong ticket sales.

Some older arenas are also getting makeovers that pay dividends. The Philadelphia Flyers are in the midst of a $300 million transformation of Wells Fargo Center and are now worth $1.2 billion, up 50% from our last set of valuations. Madison Square Garden completed a $1 billion renovation eight years ago, helping push the Rangers to the top of the Forbes ranking even though they don’t lead the league in revenue. (They’re also helped by the fact that a buyer would have to pay a premium to acquire an Original Six team in the NHL’s biggest market.)

In addition, the league has increased sponsorship revenue, to $676 million last season from $560 million during the 2017-18 season, according to IEG. That number should tick up further as teams lock down jersey patch sponsors this season, with the patches set to debut in 2022-23. Add it all up, and league insiders say that the NHL’s hockey-related revenue should increase from a projected $4.8 to $5.4 billion in 2022-23. By 2025-26, the NHL thinks that revenue will hit $6 billion, 22% more than in the 2019-20 season.

    League Projections For Hockey-Related Revenue

Hockey-related revenue refers to all revenue from the playing of NHL games or NHL-related events, including tickets (general and premium), merchandise and concession sales, all TV and radio deals, sponsorship and parking. Under the CBA between the owners and the players, hockey-related revenue is used in the calculation that determines the salary cap each season.

There are outliers to the new standard valuation multiple of 4.5, of course. Just as in other sports, big-market teams like the Rangers and the Maple Leafs will command premiums. And the Montreal Canadiens, thanks to their avid fan base and league-high local media deals, get a richer multiple, too. Conversely, Forbes assigns a multiple of only four (based on this season’s revenue projections) to the Coyotes, who do not even have an arena to play in next season and have been struggling ever since they left Winnipeg in 1996.

Regardless of city, one NHL investor sums up the current thinking like this: β€œNBA teams have been selling for six to eight times revenue. The NHL probably doesn’t have the international growth prospects of the NBAβ€”like Chinaβ€”but the league is certainly worth five times revenue. People haven’t realized it because so few teams have changed hands and most of them have been bottom of the barrel.”

The biggest rise in these valuations belongs to the Oilers, who doubled in value from last season’s ranking, to $1.1 billion. We now believe that we were short-changing them on revenue in the past and have verified that the team ranks in the top quartile in the NHL in every important revenue category, including local media, where they are in the top five alongside the Maple Leafs, the Canadiens, the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Last week, a person who advises buyers and sellers of hockey teams on valuations told Forbes that the Coyotes were for sale, with the idea that the league would allow the team to eventually move to an arena that would be built in Houston. (The team quickly denied that account, saying in a statement, β€œThe Coyotes are 100% committed to playing in Arizona.”) Setting that speculation aside, we value the Coyotes at $400 million based on their current arena situation in Glendale, Arizona. But a buyer with an option to move the team would certainly pay much more than that.

If Arizona is for sale, maybe a few of us go in on it?

I’m in, Rocket, and Chris. We come up with 0.005% each. Just need a secret investor for the other 99.985%

Then it’s money in the bank!

Brady is a force of nature.

He plays the refs better than he plays his opponent.

Also, here is a nice comment for F1’s version of Robert Kraft

I love that teams 20,21,and 22 are the most successful teams in the league. Money can’t buy everything. Arizona used to be Winnipeg. they should be relocated. Maybe give Quebec City back a team.

With Covid working it’s way through the NHL (and their double-vaccinated players), the League has cancelled games for Calgary, Colorado, Florida, Boston, and Nashville until after the X-mas break.

They’ve also cancelled tonight’s Toronto @ Vancouver game, and tomorrow’s games involving both.

And they still plan to go to China for the Winter Olympics?

Brady keeps himself in shape. He is a very healthy 44. He has a special chef making his food intake. Interesting what he doe NOT eat: no soda, no this, no that etc. too long to type out.

He is better in his age than others younger. I can remember his early years, he actually put on some muscle to make stronger throws, get some more “zip” on the ball.

He has a will to win like Michael Jordan did. I’ll give him that.

This guy Urban Meyer was given the keys to an NFL franchise, a number 1 QB to build around.. Carte blanche and he squandered it big time. He was on video grinding into a young girl at a bar who wasn’t his wife, and other things:

And now the NHL has stopped cross border travel, at least until Dec. 27th.
    More cancelled games…

Edit: and also added more teams to the suspended list.
    Detroit, Montreal, and Columbus.

Sources – NHL & NHLPA agree to not participate in 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing – ESPN link

Not a surprise given the current state of things.
I’m sure players were already nervous of having to quarantine there and not being able to get home before they started cancelling games.

    I wonder what will happen.
Does anyone think continuing with the Games is a good idea?
Would China entertain the idea of postponing until 2023?
If they proceed, who will show up?

Is it a good idea to hold the games? No, not really. Wasn’t really a good idea when Japan did it 5 months ago either. But I suspect it will go on and most athletes will show up. Because unlike the NHL players, this isn’t a detour for them, it’s all they train for.

Today was originally the only day that the Avs would play in Buffalo(closest team to me). I am hoping it gets rescheduled during the the “Olympic break” so I can go see them

as for the Olympics, it will be a failure commercially. No big stars, Asian location(live broadcasts are in the middle of night or early morning), Broadcasters will take a financial bath over this.

The Vancouver Canucks cleaned house at the top and started winning. New coach Bruce Boudreau was spotted in a restaurant and they started chanting “Bruce There It Is” (he asked them to stop, they did. He hates that.)

Well, it’s time to turn on this loser as he failed in his bid to be the only NHL coach to start with a new team and go 8-0.
Stuck with two others (Geoff Ward in Calgary, and Jacques Lemaire in New Jersey) at 7-0.

Heh! At least it was a shootout loss and got the point. Actually, before that loss to Pittsburgh that started the changes (every network showed that home jersey being thrown on the ice) there were 2 wins in a row.
So Vancouver’s record in their last 11 is 9-1-1.

Still not in a playoff spot. LA and San Jose seem to be resisting the “lose to get the better draft pick”, with Calgary and Edmonton maybe learning to believe. Anaheim will fall someday, but still living off the souls of the children they sold, and Vegas is still Bettman’s darling (which can go a long way).
And that’s just the Pacific Division. At least expansion Seattle knows to suck and build long term (could be a problem for everyone later if they do it right).

NHL postpones nine more games due to Canadian attendance restrictions

Really? This is some serious bullshit. There were cancellations for reasons, they built up and forced the cancellation of Olympic participation. Now some teams can only play in front of 50% arenas and they just cancel more (hoping this goes away soon)?
I hope their greed bites them in the ass and they’re forced to play the make-up games in front of no one!
Well, actually I don’t because I don’t want things to hit that point. But they’re still bastards!

So Antonio Brown basically quit the NFL mid game, stripping in the process. There’s a lot that can be said about Brown, but the bottom line is this is a guy who is seriously unwell and has been for quite sometime. He needs help, but it seems unlikely he’ll get it (or even accept it if offered).

Aside from that, the Bucs and the NFL should be ashamed even letting this guy on the field after everything he’s pulled, but they will, of course, learn nothing from this.

Speaking of the Bucs, I really thought the Jets were going to shut Tom Brady down yesterday, and they came sooooooo close; but the Brady juggernaut plowed through to another victory in the end. Fucker!

The Buffalo Bills came to play last night. They really gave it to the Patriots. Haven’t seen a Bill Bellichek team get beaten like that in a long time. The Bills took no prisoners and just might go to the Super Bowl given last night’s performance.

Sort of reminds me of the 90s Cowboys when they were so young with Jimmy Johnson as coach, Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith, Ingram, etc.

    —————————————-

One thing I don’t see as being that fair is when a QB throws the ball, it gets tipped in the air and the defensive player catches it. I don’t really see that as an interception, but that is how it is graded…

    —————————–

The Dolphins fired Flores even though he won the last 9 games. A few other heads rolled and Mike Tomlin of the Steelers is now the only black head coach. Tomlin never had a losing record. Now there is all these articles and talk about how black coaches have such a short leash to succeed immediately compared to white coaches who are allowed to lose a few years to rebuild..

They really gave it to the Patriots

Before this game, there were so many people talking Pats-Bucs SB and how Belichick’s vaunted defense was going to take down all those great offenses in the AFC and meet up with TB12 in the SB. Did nobody remember that the Bills had just gone to Foxboro and put 33 on that defense? Buffalo became the first team in Playoff History to play a perfect game on offense and I would love it if every time they mention that record they also mention who they did it against.

Bill has a lot of SB victories but what is he now? no more Brady led offenses, no more All Pro defenses. former defensive disciples of Bill’s; Vrabel 2-0 vs Belichick, Flores 4-2 vs Belichick.

Every Dynasty dies, hopefully we don’t have to wait until he actually dies before NE’s rep actually matches their talent level.

It would be nice if the Bills go all the way this season. If they do, it will go a long way toward the fan’s feelings of losing 4 straight in the 90’s.

Then again, it would be nice if the Vikings do the same.
    —————————————

I can understand blaming a wide receiver for dropping a ball that was straight to his hands, but a throw that he has to run at full speed and even then barely gets his fingers to touch it. When that happens, the QB is to blame for a slightly bad throw, an overthrow etc. I just see too many times, a receiver who just can’t get to the pass take too much of the blame.
