Jeopardy! is a game show, not a sport.

That’s just the kind of narrowminded anti-gameshow rhetoric I would expect from a SugarLander. :negative:

Jay Gruden fired: Redskins dismiss coach after 0-5 start to season

With a six-year run that featured a 35-49-1 record and one playoff appearance, Gruden was the longest-tenured coach of Daniel Snyder’s 20-year ownership of Washington’s football team.

However, that run produced only two winning seasons and just one playoff appearance.

    100 years ago: Georgia Tech’s 222-0 victory

Georgia Tech scored at least 42 points in every quarter (63, 63, 54 and 42).
The Yellow Jackets scored 32 touchdowns, and Cumberland committed 15 turnovers (nine fumbles lost, six interceptions).
Georgia Tech ran a relatively low 29 offensive plays, all rushes, for 501 total yards (17.3 yards per play). Cumberland finished with negative-28 total yards.
Cumberland did not gain a first down. Georgia Tech had 20.

An article I read about this achievement stated that it isn’t being considered an official marathon record because:
    1. it was not a competition (he was the only runner); and
    2. the timekeeping was done by various people at various points along the route rather than by one timekeeper.

Whatever, I think he did something pretty amazing.

Apparently the big driver in these marathon records being broken is the shoes. The Nike Vaporfly ones. Not to take away from the fact that however you do it that time is incredible but I was looking at some analysis on how much benefit they give, they do look rather weird and like there’s some spring assistance even.

It’s another reason his time isn’t official as the rules say the shoes must be freely available to all runners and the ones he was wearing were a new prototype not commercially available.

Some interesting information on CTE in the link.
FMIA Week 6: It’s a New World at Quarterback and Other NFL Truths

The brains of deceased former football players used to trickle into the CTE Center at Boston University. But the spate of publicity about CTE and the worried families wanting to know the truth about their late football-playing loved ones have increased the donations in recent years so that now about 600 brains of former players at all levels of football have been sent to the BU facility for examination. “We’re getting four times the donations we were getting five years ago,” said Chris Nowinski, co-founder of the Concussion Legacy Institute. Not all have been studied yet. In a recent study by the Annals of Neurology publication, we learned:
In examining 266 deceased former players, 223 were found to meet the criteria for CTE—about 83 percent.
    • The fact that 43 former players did not test for CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is characterized by a dangerous protein, Tau, being found in the brain) wasn’t particularly encouraging to Nowinski. “Just as some people who smoke cigarettes for 50 years do not get lung cancer, not everyone who played football for years gets CTE,” he said.
The risk of CTE doubles every 2.6 years of playing tackle football.
Being diagnosed with CTE is more a function of the number of years a person plays tackle football, not the number of concussions a player suffers.
    • Nowinski and his foundation are beginning a campaign called “Tackle Can Wait,” featuring a PSA of young boys in football uniforms smoking cigarettes. The theory: It’s as dangerous for a child’s health to play tackle football for his long-term health as it is for a child to smoke cigarettes. Nowinski is recommending that parents not allow their children to play tackle football till at least age 14.
“My gut says this issue is more widespread than we thought it was,” Nowinski said. “But I think we have a tremendous opportunity for preventing CTE going forward. Do you really need to start playing tackle football at 5 or 6, with all the information that’s out there about the damage it can cause at such a young age? We’re starting the new campaign to try to educate parents to wait to enroll their children till high school in tackle football. There’s still a million kids playing [tackle] at a young age, and progress [in promoting flag over tackle] is moving slower than I expected. Most people, once you get on the tackle train, you don’t get off. We need to get to the parents. Once you look at this data, you’re going to have a make a serious decision for your child.”
The PSA is a bit haunting—but it’s supposed to be.

Over the moon about the Nats. Now I just need the Astros to beat the Yankees in a series that goes 7 games. Long series with no travel day = worn out. Houston overNew York? The ticket prices stay down because no one’s taking a Megabus down and back from Houston.

    @mark-abnett

You’ve been quiet. Your team is looking great as usual. Ireland were pants though, not sure why they fell off a cliff in 2019.

Wales were terrible last week but assisted by typical French incompetence to win. I actually think SA are easier opposition for us in some ways, they are very good at what they do but we know what that will be (especially with Kolbe out injured as the major wildcard). If we play at 100% and much better than last weekend we could sneak it.

The Astros have been absolute garbage in the post season. It’s sheer luck they made it to the World Series. If regular season Astros had shown up, the Nats would be shitting themselves.

Well they’ve really ruined any suspense by giving the final scores away before the games have even started.

  • #3884

Yeah, I’m really struggling with the new board, to be honest. I don’t find it that enjoyable/user friendly to use as I used to do a lot of millarworlding off my phone and its not a great user experience at the moment. I really dislike reading posts in light grey. I’m probably going blin but it’s really offputting

    Sooo The Rugby.
Pretty much the Final for me is NZ v England. The 2 best teams there and unfortunately it will be decided by the referee’s whistle but at least it’s the best ref in the world so we can’t be too upset about that.

Wales v South Africa. I struggle to see how Wales can beat SA the are battle-hardened and Wales haven’t exactly taken the tournament by storm. As you say the French threw the game away the other day and Australia have been particularly poor this world cup.

I pick SA to take the tournament based on being fresher after they defeat wales as NZ v England will leave it all on the park and through injuries and wear and tear not be able to back up against SA.

I’m always nervous before an English Game.
We never bloody play them. The last time was 2014?!
the pundits in the papers come up with all these theories. “England have a mental edge!” Nz isn’t invincible anymore! ” but its pretty much clickbait bullshit. Facebook is a clusterfuck of clickbait rugby articles at the moment and you get the worse examples of fans from all sides kicking off and just making their home nations look like idiots.

I’m especially sick of the NZ poaching the pacific islands for players rant that comes out every 4 years.
The usual names are run out, Olo Brown, Jerome Kaino, Mils Muliaina, Joe Rokocoko.

I actually have a reply typed out and cut and paste it to every dickhead that lays down the stolen from the island challenge.

    All Black foreign-born argument

I’m sure your right ____Idiots name___. NZ has a knack for picking up players like Muliaina when they are 3 years old moving to Invercargill. Olo Brown attended Mount Albert Grammar School before the professional era. In 1987 at the age of 4, Jerome Kaino and Family relocated to NZ. Rokocoko migrated to New Zealand with his family at the age of 5, Waisake Naholo attended Whanganui City College which certainly isn’t a hotbed of rugby talent. Look I agree NZ needs to do more with the islands but the NZ poaching from the islands moan and groan has to stop. I’ve given you the receipts. Time to think about it. I think NZ Rugby’s main point is for clubs to make players available for international training /playing window. Which in fairness NZ rugby does.

Does this make me as much of a fool as the fools themselves? Probably. But I have yet to see any of them reply back.

All I want is to watch a good game of Rugby.
Japan has been outstanding with their speed, their skill and the way they have carried themselves in the tournament.
I hope the NZ v England game can be contested fairly with no controversial calls but history says otherwise.

Oh And I also think England should be the number one team in the world.
They have everything going for them.
    Numbers/Money/facilities.

The only thing NZ has an advantage over is in youth development and I’m talking ages 6-16.
Aside from maybe Australia, there’s no other country where a ball is placed in kids hands and they are taught to run and pass from the get-go.
Most English rugby players don’t start till they are 15/16 and that’s almost 8 years of a basic skill set which has not been developed. Scotland is a classic for this. Ever masters of their own downfall, they lose the majority of games via handling errors or turnovers. It’s self-inflicted. Look at anytime they have defeated someone in the 6 nations it’s when they make the least mistakes. Japan has shown this as well. eliminate errors and you always have a foot in the door.

SOOOOO hopefully that rant makes up for my quietness. Fingers crossed for a Wales v NZ final Gar but it’ll probably be SA v NZ with SA for the win.

Feed that stuff back. This is a work in progress, on my screen the text is in black but we can try and fix that. I got my guy to enlarge the text I’m sure it can be set to a deep black. We’ve changed a few bits as it has gone along within the budget (e.g fuck all) I have.

I struggle to see how Wales can beat SA the are battle-hardened and Wales haven’t exactly taken the tournament by storm. As you say the French threw the game away the other day and Australia have been particularly poor this world cup.

The bit of hope I have is they are the type of team we like to play. If it’s powered and structured we tend to handle that. It’s the off the cuff and random elements we tend to struggle with which basically sums up everything about Fiji, Australia and France.

Late to reply, but now, I was not happy all weekend. Even after Game 5, surprising no one. Had a great time at a World Series game, which was absolutely electric, but the Nats were down 3-2 as I drove home and needed to do something that had never been done to pull it off …
    .
AND THEY DID! It was unbelievable! What a historic comeback team! So many records, and champions! I’ve been naturally high since about 11:50 Wednesday night!

    Sorry, @Todd.

If the Astros had played the way they had during the regular season, they would have swept the Nats. The Astros really played poorly postseason.
    .
I will say this, some members of the Nats could learn some good lessons from the Astros when it comes to sportsmanship and professionalism. It’s hard to congratulate the Nats when some members act like trash.

So some of the players for the Steelers and Browns ended their Thursday night game by auditioning for the xfl.

While I can never justify Miles Garret’s decision to hit a player with their helmet, I am surprised less is being made of the Steelers QB trying to pull Garrets helmet off first and then kicking him in the crotch.

Everything I have seen so far is discussing how long Garret will be suspended for, how big his fine will be etc with Rudolph’s role as the instigator being totally overlooked.

I expected the 1st place Packers to wallop the Giants (which they did), but for the Jets to get creamed by the Bengals, who hadn’t won a game since the midpoint of last season, was a real blow to their fans. Not even a close game.

  • #7996

I was surprised as hell the Texans beat the Patriots. I had pretty much written off this game as a loss.

  • #8071

the Jets to get creamed by the Bengals,

on Saturday, I was talking to a couple of Jets fans and they said “if you(Bills fans) are thinking you got it all locked up, think again. we(Jets) are going to run the table and beat you at the end of the season to get into the playoffs” I am not even a Bills fan, but Sunday seemed to me a little bit of Karma to bring those fans back to reality.

  • #11080

I knew Brady wouldn’t retire when the game ended on a pick 6. No way he wants that to be his final pass in the NFL. But no matter how great he’s been, his age is finally catching up with him, and once that hits it’s usually a pretty rapid decent. I didn’t watch many Patriots games this year, but what I saw the last couple of weeks was Brady missing on some passes he used to never miss on. And losing two back to back games at home when they also have the top defense in the NFL would have never happened in any of the previous years. I see a lot of blame surrounding the lack of weapons for Brady, but that seems wrong. Brady rarely had top receiving talent. Brady made receivers look like top talent (minus the likes of Moss and Gronk, probably). That dynasty was built on a coach, QB, and system that could make just about any receiver a star on any given week. This season, Brady wasn’t good enough to get it done. Which isn’t surprising, he’s 42 years old.

I’m sure some team will sign him, but it feels unlikely that he’ll suddenly bounce back and be a top tier QB ever again. Don’t get me wrong, he didn’t have a bad year by regular standards. But by Brady’s standards, it was his lowest TD total in 13 seasons (minus the season he was injured week 1), his lowest avg passing yards per game in nearly 10 seasons and his worst completion % in 7 seasons. Just seems likely that it’ll be all downhill from here. Especially if he’s in a completely new system next year.

  • #11083

Wasn’t this Bill Belichick‘s last year on his contract with the Patriots? Rumor has it that he and owner Robert Kraft didn’t get along so I wonder if he will be back. Can another coach help get Brady as he is now get back to the Super Bowl? This might truly be the end of an era.

I was very sad with the NFL games this weekend.  Of the teams I was rooting for, one QB showed his youth(Allen), 2 showed their age(Brady & Brees), and the fourth showed he can’t stay healthy(Wentz). Someone on early morning Espn said Wentz might go the route of Luck and I thought that was a reasonable take after all of his injuries.  I used to be one of the biggest Brady haters out there but the last half of this season he was kinda sad to watch and I don’t like Tennessee(always hated Henry going back to ALA).

MANCHESTER UNITED FILES IPSO COMPLAINT AGAINST THE SUN

Manchester United has made a formal complaint to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) regarding The Sun newspaper and its coverage of the attack on the house of Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward.

The complaint relates to the story ‘Ed Devils: Man Utd fans throw flares at Ed Woodward’s house in shocking scenes as anti-board protests continue to escalate’ carried online and on the back page of the print edition dated 29 January 2020.

The Club believes that The Sun newspaper had received advance notice of the intended attack, which included criminal damage and intent to intimidate, and that the journalist was present as it happened. The quality of the images accompanying the story indicate that a photographer was also present.

Not only did the journalist fail to discharge the basic duty of a responsible member of society to report an impending crime and avert potential danger and criminal damage, his presence both encouraged and rewarded the perpetrators. We believe that this was a clear breach of both the IPSO Editors’ code and journalistic ethics.

The decision to make a formal complaint to IPSO was not taken lightly. We will await its ruling with keen interest as an important test of the self-regulatory system for newspapers and its ability to uphold ethical standards in the press.

IPSO is toothless, the best they’ll get is an apology on page 17 of the paper. If they think they aided in a crime then take it through the police and courts.

Major League Rugby is starting up in the US today. Some teams for you to support. A Houston team for Todd, Colorado for Miqque and Al and Jerry can opt for Rugby United New York who all the pundits seem to think will win. :rose:

The new XFL had its first game today. The DC Defenders beat the Seattle Dragons 31-19.

I used to live 3 or 4 blocks from the Colorado stadium(Infinity  Park). I used to walk by and see teams practicing.  Good Times.

Wilder is hilarious, he got hammered in fight and then in the post match interview kept repeating ‘no excuses’ while reeling off a list of excuses. Now he’s added a new one that his crazy costume for entering the ring was too heavy to his legs were tired. :-)

A little bit of “hockey-talkie” (NHL)

My team is the Vancouver Canucks, and a lot of things have gone right this year.
I wouldn’t have coughed up a first round pick for J.T. Miller (to Tampa looking to dump salary), but he’s having a career year.
Winger Brock Boeser (2018 Rookie runner-up, and perfect for a Princess Bride re-make) re-signs for 3-years at a decent price.
Elias Petterson (2019 rookie winner) only better, and after next season new contract.
Defenceman Quinn Hughes has been a godsend and is a rookie of the year candidate against another d-man Colorado’s Cale Makar.
D-Man Tyler Myers wanted to come here as a UFA (and honestly a good price)
Healthy bodies? Been good, actually awesome compared to years past.
A good goaltending grooming has been going on with Thatcher Demko, Jacob Markstrom has emerged as a very good goalie, and is the MVP this season.
Bad contracts? Ha! Winning means go look somewhere else (you’re an armchair coach anyways).

Markstrom’s UFA status in the summer kinda makes the time now, like right now.
Seattle expansion draft after next season throws a wrench in 2-goalie system, and new contracts for Hughes and Petterson after next season mean wait and see.

And guess what? The Pacific division sucks! Are you shitting me? 3 Californian teams need a re-build, Arizona needs to figure it out, I’m not a believer in Calgary or Edmonton.
Yes Vegas woke up, just poke them in the eye.
A spot in the Western Conference Finals awaits. Just do it. Hopefully St. Louis and Colorado will destroy each other in 7 games.
Well then you’re only one round away from the parade route!

So of course Boeser goes down with injury, expected back near end of season.
Markstrom goes down with injury, and this might affect things.
Rumors swirling he’s out longer than they say.
Demko lost 4 straight (more like the absense of MVP shows flaws in the team)
and we need a win tonight.
And ‘games in hand’? You have to play them. No days off.

As I type Vancouver leads Colorado 4-3 and we need this.
Colorado is pretty frickin good, and I can see them besting St. Louis.
Sucks for Dallas to get decent with those two in front.

    Edit
And a quick update has Vancouver going up 5-3, and then Tanner Pearson makes it 6-3 (Win!) with a long shot empty-netter.
That’s his 6th empty-net goal and so good in the role he’s given.
He’s good friends with Tyler Tofolli (so maybe we re-sign Tofolli at a nice price)

from your mouth to God’s ear.

The Avs can’t seem to catch St Louis and it is frustrating but right now I am praying they just get healthy and stay healthy. Hughes will probably win Calder. He has the name and Award voters don’t seem to want to vote for Avs. (Still burned about the Taylor Hall MVP.  he had one good month vs Nate’s great year)

After Seattle joins the League and the divisions are equal then I wouldn’t mind a preliminary round (just get rid of the All Star Break to make room).

Maybe #4 & #5 play a Best-of-3 for the right to play the division winner.
3 games in 4 nights (Mon., Tues., Thurs.) or (Tues., Wed., Fri.)
#2 & #3 seeds start on the Friday or Saturday (no days off for viewer)

What does the #1 seed get? My idea is games 3, 4, 5, & 6
Less travel and quicker path to 4th game revenue.
    Winner of pre-lim gets games 1, 2, & 7
Yup, that would make it interesting…

But like I said, after Seattle makes it a 32 team league.

    They have more immediate concerns.

Maybe San Jose isn’t worried about the post season, but
San Jose Sharks might have to play games in an empty arena next week
The County of Santa Clara’s Public Health Department has ordered to prohibit “mass gatherings” of crowds larger than 1,000 people through the end of March.

Will this affect the playoffs? Empty buildings and just a TV show?
    Scrap it all entirely?
Fuck me I’ve heard everything lately. Wondering how far it will go.

And what I’m watching right now is a pretty good Islanders team force OT vs my Canucks.

Both sides open it up like its the late 80’s.
(Canuck coach Travis Green works with what he has and this will happen. If Vancouver fails to make it I say God bless him for going this route

NBA to suspend season after Wednesday night

The NBA announced that it will suspend the season after Wednesday night’s games until further notice, as it deals with the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement came after a player on the Utah Jazz preliminarily tested positive for covid-19 ahead of a game between that team and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The game was called off moments before tip-off, and the player had not been in the arena.

The league said it would use the hiatus to determine next steps amid the pandemic.

Have you tried THE MIGHTY DUCKS? MIRACLE (or its predecessor MIRACLE ON ICE)? How about the truly wonderful MYSTERY, ALASKA, in which Russell Crowe’s team takes on the NY Rangers? All worthy hockey films, and I’m not even a fan of the sport.
