We need a group name for people who post on The Carrier.

In the old days we were Millarworlders – what are we now?

Carriers?

Carrierers?

Carrierists?

I think after years of running the MillarWorld boards he just needed a break.

It’s just not the same when you can’t delete posts you don’t agree with or threaten to ban the people you don’t like.

Make a poster have to have a word that ends in -ng, just because they had a dream. :-)

I don’t want to talk about people who aren’t aroudn to defend themselves, but I did really hate the way you were treated there, Anders. I came in too late to do anything about it, but it really shouldn’t have happened that way. It’s another reason why I am so glad you are back; it’d have been terrible if that’d been the end of it.

Water under the bridge now, hopefully. But I can understand if you are holding a grudge.

I’m pretty good at holding grudges until I feel that all involved parties have reconciled, but I won’t make it a recurring theme to piss on Jim (until he inevitably returns, anyway). I think I just needed to get a couple of things about it out to compartmentalise and ultimately move past what I’ve been thinking for months. You know where I stand. And that’s that. Let the blood water flow under the bridge.

edited to add: Thanks, Christian. As is probably obvious from my posting history the past 24h, I actually do feel welcomed and glad to be back.

Jim had his supporters and detractors back in the day but I think everyone’s fairly ambivalent now that the OharaWorld iteration of the Millar board is dead and gone.

Jim and I never got along, but with time I’ve come to see that a lot of that was on me testing him. A lot of it was on him, mind you.

Anyway, we’ll probably never get along but I am glad to hear he’s doing well. He probably doesn’t really need the board like some others do.

So when Netflix launched here and in other parts nearby there was some controversy as they don’t censor their content. Usually sex and nudity and some bad language are banned for local providers in many Asian countries. They can’t do that with Netflix as they have no local legal presence but some conservative politician have grumbled about IP blocking it but it hasn’t gone much further than just grumbling.

So anyway it seems as some kind of weird compromise they’ve just rammed up the age ratings on everything. So basically everything that’s isn’t specifically a kids show is given at least 16+ or more usually 18+. Like Glee is marked as 18+ or Arrow or Big Bang Theory –  US network shows that are already stopped by the FCC from having any real rude words or sexy bits.

It’s a bit of a pain in the arse because with kids in the house I now have no real idea what is suitable without doing extra research. I’m happy they don’t need to be 16 to watch The Flash, 6 would be fine.

Not as much extra faff as researching everything Netflix would recommend for the kids until they come of age, just sayinnnn’

Holy shit, has anyone there discovered Sense8 yet?

  • #22625

Sense 8 is there, Sex Education is there. It’s all the same content, no cuts. They are marked 18+ along with Glee and Arrow.

It’s clear that Netflix don’t want to actually censor any content so this is their method to try and prevent any action by authorities.

I did actually do the VPN connect and looked at the UK site and while not as extreme they seem to be following a bit of the same policy there. They’ve set a lot of TV content with a 12 certificate that originally went out on BBC in a family slot, stuff like Doctor Who and Merlin. The BBFC have already rated them for DVD release at PG.

I guess an extension of that PG-13 trend seen by the MPAA, it’s like covering your own back by just lumping everything in the higher rating. Any complaints from little Johnny’s mum that a rubber monster scared him and the comeback is “well we recommended for 12/13+ only.”

I don’t know, a 12 rating for Who (modern Who at least) seems about right. Glancing at my DVD shelf, most of the modern series got 12 ratings for DVD, only Matt Smith’s first season didn’t.

  • #22666

Ironically Matt Smith’s first season was the one appearing.

If it is I think it’s a bit daft really, like anyone at home watching at 6.35pm on BBC1 thinks only those over 12 should watch it. They trail the show on Blue Peter.

To me the relative absence of the PG rating is an abrogation of duty, they may as well not watch this stuff, just see if it’s a kiddies cartoon give it a U/G, any other action adventure give it a 12/PG13. They could cut down on cost that way.

Say, Gar, I wanted to ask – what kind of timetables do they use for your kids’ online classes? Are those really comparable to the offline timetables or shorter, more focused time? I find it a bit hard to imagine to have normal-sized classes in online conferences for longer periods of time.

  • #22831

At first they used the same timetable for week. Then they broke up for a 2 week Easter holiday, when they came back the Principal did a video with outlining basically the same concerns as you. So they’ve reduced their 1h 20m lessons down to 40 mins.

The overall school day is 1 hour 40 mins shorter. They do have more project work to do and the teachers stay online if anyone needs any help. They also have some tutorial sessions if they feel any of the kids may need more assistance, those are by invitation only for the pupils they think need it.

It does put more onus on the parents to be honest, I’m helping them complete work a lot more than I’m used to. It’s a lot preferable to having to fully homeschool of course but not ideal if there aren’t parents at home in the day.

  • #22847

I watched a bit of Friday night TV yesterday and found it interesting seeing the shows that usually have a studio audience now operating without one, and how much it changes the feel of things.

Panel shows like Have I Got News For You now have participants all attending remotely by video chat, and no laughter when the jokes are made, except for from the other panellists. (And while HIGNFY hasn’t been really funny for a while, even the gags that would usually raise a laugh feel really flat without a reaction.)

And then I watched Graham Norton’s chat show, which now consists of individual video interviews that feature the usual larking about but with no audience reaction (and no interaction amongst the various interviewees as they’re all handled separately). Again, the content is as amusing as ever (Michael Sheen made me laugh last week doing a version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from his own home) but without an audience reacting to it, it feels quite cold and empty and almost sad.

It’s made me realise how conditioned we are to enjoy things because we see and hear other people enjoying them, and how different our reactions are when those group cues aren’t there.

I watched some of Graham Norton last night. Patrick Stewart was so joyful with his jigsaws. His sonnet reading was pure bliss.

  • #22859

The audience thing is pretty huge. I was listening to the podcast of Bill Maher’s show and the first week he did his opening monologue without an audience it was just so flat. The second week they added a laugh track (which he also made jokes about with quips about what a great audience is in tonight etc). It worked so much better even if you know it’s fake.

It’s no comment really on the quality of the jokes, they are pretty much on a par with all US talk show opening monologue material. Some clunkers, some good ones, all written by a team in the back room.

I read a review praising how Richard Herring has approached it. Normally his podcast interviews are conducted in theatres with an audience but now having to record them one on one over the phone he changed the approach, cutting out the one-liners and silly ’emergency questions’ designed to get laughs and had a more intimate discussion instead. It was actually contrasted with Dave’s Graham Norton example.

He was lovely as ever but it was more like listening in on a private phone call – but with them still doing bits designed to generate audience laughs in the same way as usual, which feels weird when there’s then no reaction.

Changing the approach like Gar’s Richard Herring example (which I haven’t listened to yet) sounds sensible if you aren’t going to go with ‘canned’ laughter.

  • #22893

I tried the first video call HIGNFY and couldn’t bear more than half of it (and I’m someone who usually enjoys the show, unlike Dave). Haven’t got around to trying any of the Norton ones, but I found it curious that it’s been moved to 9pm now.

Last Week Tonight has been interesting without an audience and laughter. The first week or two, Oliver felt pretty subdued and quiet and I think it was the inescapable weirdness of just talking to yourself to a camera (I had to so that for something the other week and found it really uncomfortable). But he’s got into it more now, finding his usual rhythms and energy and it works pretty well because he, more than any of the US talk show hosts, always seems somewhat indifferent to audience response. He always cuts through the applause at the top of the show to just get on with it, for instance, while Colbert (back on the Report at least) always revelled in it. I’d watch some of the others for comparison, but we only get Fallon and Corden legitimately over here and I can’t bear them at the best of times.

Oh I didn’t mean to be too harsh, it usually raises a chuckle or I wouldn’t bother at all. But the video call format makes it incredibly awkward, especially when it comes to Merton’s more surreal jokes. Against a backdrop of audience laughter they can really build but in silence they feel like demented ramblings.

I ordered a new computer on Friday, mine is high powered but getting pretty old now and games were running slow which was irritating me.

Today my hard drive has started to make clicking noises, I Googled the best solutions for that, the overwhelming answer is it’ll be dead within a week. I’ve backed everything important up and thanked my good timing in having a replacement on the way in 2-3 days.

The new one will come with a 512gb solid state drive so should be nice and smoooooth. I buy them ‘refurbished’ because I know what that means, every computer has a one month no quibble refund but if they are returned they can’t legally be resold as new. They take them in, run diagnostics to make sure all is good (replacing any parts that may not have been) and do a clean install.

So I get 40% off the shop price for a high spec PC and it still comes with a full 3 year warranty so I don’t care it was used briefly. It’s a recommended option but often these deals are hidden away in alternative URLs.

So anyway if I disappear for a little while it’s unlikely to be Covid-19 (very low cases here) but a dead PC.

When you get up there in age past your 50’s, you sometimes wish you were younger.
I would take 35 or 40 years of age now, which isn’t asking too much like 18 or 25…

How about you old-timers out there? Which age would you settle for now?

  • #22983

You have to accept the age you are. What’s the logic in compromising you imagine you are 40 instead of 25?

If it’s all imagination then I’m 22 with the looks of Chris Hemsworth. Screw being me at 40. This is like dreams you had a new dishwasher instead of being a multi-billionaire with a harem of supermodels.

I’m getting weird internet service today. Lots of sites are fine but some have become deathly slow. I’m trying to find a pattern – Youtube and Netflix are streaming video fine, I Chromecasted a show for Mrs Jones so the router is good. The Carrier is performing as usual, which admittedly is never speedy but ok, however Comixology is deathly slow to load just the front page like I’m on dial up, Twitter a lot the same (including on my phone app when I tried to watch a video so not singled out to an ISP).

I was wondering if maybe it was the cable to the US but the local version of Amazon (Lazada) is really slow so I’m scuppered at trying to figure out the source of the problem. I’ve got like half the internet working as usual and the other half partying liked it’s 1999.

I love messages on social media telling me my life would be better if I spent less time on social media. Thanks for that Ashley Graham.

I wonder if cats and dogs have national cultures and characters like people do. Dogs in Italy seem so much nicer and more relaxed in Italy than over here.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, Suparman is a not so uncommon last name. The only person with that name considered notable by Wikipedia was the minister of Justice of the now dissolved Indonesian state of Pasunda, which means ” place of the Sundanese”. I wonder if that Mr. Suparman also minister of truth and the Sundanese way.

At least for Sardinia, I can say that that is a myth. I was barked at a lot.

The difference was the freely roaming dogs, those that weren’t trained to protect a house or stuff like that. They’d just wander up to you friendliliy hoping for a snack.

I wouldn’t quite say that, it is pretty uncommon. Enough that locals would also giggle at it. It exists though and there was also an international footballer in Malaysia with the name but that’s the only time I’ve seen it outside the famous Batman bin Suparman in Indonesia.

Mohd Rusdi Bin Mohd Suparman (born 27 January 1973) is a retired Malaysian footballer. He was known as Superman by his teammates and his fans. He is also a former member of the Malaysian pre-Olympic team and also the Malaysian national team.

What happened to Johnathan Henning? All his posts are listed under Anonymous now. Did I miss something?

The anonymous tag means he deleted his own account. I have no idea why or if he will choose to come back, there didn’t seem to be any big argument to drive him away. Certainly nothing the moderators even noticed.

I’ve decided it might be time to upgrade my desktop, as it’s been about a decade since I last did it and I’ve been getting a fair bit of slowdown when running memory and processor programs lately (not even games – though not currently being able to run Battletech is also contributing factor to wanting an upgrade). Also, probably more BSODs than is healthy.

Is it just me, or has working out the specs and compatibilities of components got a lot more complicated than it used to be? I’m sure graphics cards used to be named/numbered in a roughly sequential way, so you could just go for a higher number and know it was better. Now the spec lists and benchmarking sites list examples with impenetrable names and there seems to be no way of knowing if any any other given card is better or worse than that without spending half an hour Googling it and hoping someone has done a direct comparison of them.

    Christ I feel old.
