We need a group name for people who post on The Carrier.

In the old days we were Millarworlders – what are we now?

Carriers?

Carrierers?

Carrierists?

When there’s a crisis in the UK, the PM convenes the COBRA committee. COBRA stands for Cabinet Office Briefing Room A — which is literally the room where the committee meets.

If there’s a briefing room A, it stands to reason that there must also be a briefing room B. But you never hear anything about what goes on in briefing room B.

So clearly that’s where the really important stuff goes on. The stuff they can’t even admit to. What they hell are they discussing in room B ???

I’ve been thinking about this novel I read as a kid:

It’s by John Christopher, who wrothe thr Tripods books and quite a few dystopian novels that I read when I was like fourteen or so. This one was basically like, if The Stand was only the first third or so. It’s about a new sickness eradicating pretty much everybody in England, and the protagonist is the only survivor (he meets some others later on) wandering around an empty world.

It was a very memorable reading experience as a kid.

Been on my mind for obvious reasons.

I’ve been watching a crime drama called Bang on S4C which was filmed in my home town of Port Talbot. I was always used to it but after many years away it did strike me how weird one image is. The town is very long and narrow as it’s a small gap of land between the sea and hills so when they built the M4 motorway in the 1960s they had to send it right through the centre of where people lived and worked and placed on stilts.

This house was once part of a terrace of houses but now just exists on its own right under the shadow of the motorway. It’s also an interesting look at how sound travels because with the cars moving up above there’s very little noise despite how incredibly close they are.

The elevated section runs for a couple of miles and it ends up being used relatively frequently in film and TV for a rather obscure location as it looks a little weird. When we were kids we’d play football and cricket under the motorway when it started raining (although my house was nowhere this close, it was about 20om away).

That is very odd. It’s got a slight Hitch-hiker’s vibe to it – if Arthur had managed to get the road going through his house diverted around it.

There’s a house a little bit like that in the middle of the M62.

Apparently though the story behind it is less interesting than the urban myth of the owner refusing to sell up, and is instead to do with a geographical fault on the land that meant the road couldn’t be safely built on it.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #19019

You wonder how the owner gets anywhere, there doesn’t seem to be any way to walk of drive to the property without running across a busy 3 lane motorway (which I believe is illegal anyway). Maybe there’s a tunnel to the left there?

  • #19020

Yeah there’s an underpass apparently, I just googled it before posting the photo to check I had my facts straight.

Many may wonder exactly how you get to and from the farmhouse.

The answer… an underpass accessible via a lane off the A672 near Booth Wood Reservoir in Ripponden.

And from a girl who grew up in the house:

“When they were building the motorway my mum used to go through the underpass to get to school. My granddad put the rams into the underpass and closes the gates. Mum and her friend were too scared to go through the underpass because they were terrified of the rams – so they decided to run over the motorway instead!”

I think that’s always the automatic assumption (the plot from UP) but it’s the same in the case of the lone house in the terrace in my pic. It’s all under compulsory purchase so digging in wasn’t really an option.

It was just part of the agreement to remove the minimum possible, a few terraces are ‘chopped’ in the same way but this was the only one where the measurements had one house remaining. This is the view from above where you can see it runs through what were several streets:

There is just something innately dystopian about that image, however old the wall looks.

  • #19061

There’s a few dystopian images round there, it’s home to the largest steel works in Europe which has echoes of Blade Runner at night and in the 70s/80s a coal seem opened and turned a small beach cove black. That was seen by Terry Gilliam and he says inspired him to think about Brazil.

By contrast though this is the area where my primary school was:

Wales must be beautiful, I would really like to go there some time.

Alphen aan den Rijn, the town where I live now, used to be kind of a joke in the Netherlands, as it was a boring 70s town, there was an influx in the 70s of people from the rural villages surrounding it and bigger cities like Den Haag and Rotterdam, and they rapidly built some  suburbs in the typical uninspiring 70s style. But it has really improved over the last years, with a huge renewal project that started in think in the late 90s. The centre of the city is now quite attractive.

But think about when it was built — they couldn’t have known that for sure. It flies in the face of all common sense, they had no computer modelling, and probably few other real world examples as proof of concept. I don’t know, I think they probably could have. The start of the M4 at the other end in Chiswick began with a half mile flyover built in 1959. It doesn’t run through a housing area in quite the same way but they would have been able to measure sound levels from the side and below. There was likely more science involved than just whack it up and find out.

Both used Rose, but some people insist that one of them (different people will claim Teddy, others FDR) anglicized it to ruse. However, some people do say ruse. Google found an article that actually quoted a professor I once had, saying that in NYC people say rose, but elsewhere in America, ruse. I know that rose is the Philly pronunciation, and I found a Reddit post complaining about how Chicagoans say ruse, so it may be a northeast vs the rest of America thing

That’s kind of an unusual name, I think it is probably derived from Marinus which is more common. It should be pronounced pretty much the same as the English word marine. Ma-reen. With the stress on the reen.

I had an odd dream last night.

A group of us went back to Millarworld, except it was a planet and not a messageboard.

There were about six or seven of us who made the trip. While I don’t recall everyone, I do know that @arjandirkse and @christian were there with me. I think @jimohara was also there with us.

Millarworld was burnt to a black char with a dark, cloudy sky. All that was standing were burned and damaged pillars. When Arjan, Christian, and I touched different pillars, streams of comments would appear. The pillars were actually threads from the old board! The threads were incomplete and missing information due to the fire damage but it was fantastic seeing the old threads. Arjan, Christian, and I turned and smiled to each other as we were looking at different threads. It was a shared moment of camaraderie and happiness for all the good and positive Millarworld had brought into our lives and continues to do so with The Carrier.

    I then woke up.

The brand can make a difference, I suppose, if you really know what you need your laptop for and if it’s very specific stuff, but for the likes of you and me honestly you can just find one of the cheap models by HP, Lenovo or a similar brand. Go with something that is on offer and maybe take a look at whether it’s been tested well on one of the sites that test these things. But really it doesn’t matter if you aren’t into high-end gaming or movie editing.

EDIT: I should maybe add that I am saying this as someone who doesn’t have a clue about computers, just that that’s been my experience :)

. Does the brand make any difference or is it pretty much all the same stuff?

The brand makes no difference at all. What you want to focus on is the model.

The first reason is that computers nowadays are pretty much all outsourced to 3rd party manufacturers in China. So a Dell model and a Lenovo model could be made by Foxxcon Shenzen but another Dell and a HP from Wistron in Chengdu. It’s common you will see a very highly rated laptop from a brand and then another that is deemed to be rubbish.

The second is that computer companies are really just assemblers, the parts inside are often exactly the same, even for Apple nowadays – it’s Kingston memory, Seagate hard drive, Intel processor, Nvidia graphics, Samsung screen, Sony battery etc.

So this is my advice on how to shop for a new laptop:

    1) Look for a few models that fit into your price range and what you want/need to use it for.

    2) Google those models + ‘review’. Sites like C-Net, PC Review or Engadget will have put them through various benchmark tests and scored them.

    3) Buy the one with the best score across the review sites.

Is anyone still in touch with Jim? I miss the old Irish bastard.

Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn’t know that he was Zhuang Zhou.  Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn’t know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zho!

Everybody should read Zhuangzi. That book changed my life.

Jim and his wife and kids are all doing well; I think after years of running the MillarWorld boards he just needed a break. He’s certainly earned it. Mostly I think he needed to get away from RonnieM. :-)

    That is good to know.

    Now how about Will?

I still want to know about Will and a few others but…

    On a side note:

Who was the MW Oracle back in the day?
Who is the Carrier Oracle now?

I used to think Jim was a bit gruff, at first. But later I really got to appreciate him, for his style and personality and the ideas he gave me.

It’s just not the same when you can’t delete posts you don’t agree with or threaten to ban the people you don’t like.

He can’t get away from me.  I know where he lives. ;-)
