We need a group name for people who post on The Carrier.

In the old days we were Millarworlders – what are we now?

Carriers?

Carrierers?

Carrierists?

Am I ready for the 20s?

I wasn’t even ready last decade!

  • #10556

Hey, remember when we were worried that Y2K was going to blow up our computers, send airplanes plummeting to earth, and shut down the worldwide power grid?

    That was 20 years ago.

    20!

  • #10576

To end the decade this time Chip Zdarsky got a temporary ban from Twitter for posting a picture of his arse.

(I got paid a lot of extra overtime money in 1999 thanks to the Y2K bug so I have fond memories)

I’m pretty sure myself and a pal saw in the millennium dj-ing (ie playing cds) at the disco in the village hall. Good times!

Happy new year and new decade, ya filthy animals.

    From Chip’s latest email newsletter:

    NEXT WEEK
We’ll be back with our regular newsletter! In which, yes, I’ll talk about #buttgate2019

Also from the newsletter, his “Best of 2019”:

    BEST COMIC
Batman Vs. Ghostbusters (DC, whoever publishes Ghostbusters)

Never in my wildest dreams did I think would see this pairing, but it turns out companies love making money! When the Ghostbusters are called in by Alfred to capture the spirits of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Batman flies into a rage! He beats Venkman within an inch of his life (Venkman almost became that which he hunts!) and almost destroys the Ghostbusters, until someone who isn’t Venkman (I forget), traps the spirits of the murdered Waynes, releasing Batman’s mind and soul from their icy grip! Batman hangs up the cowl and has a really good life with many sons (no daughters!)!

“gate” to mean any scandal is stupid. Especially when you realize that Nixon might have been innocent; it’s probable that  the Saudis, to punish him for supporting Israel, teamed up with extremist political rivals to frame him for the so-called break-in

  • #10611

Nixon wasn’t innocent, he resigned because he knew he wasn’t.

However you are right that adding the suffix ‘gate’ to any scandal when it refers to a specific hotel in Washington DC is really daft when you think about it.

They should have done it the other way and added ‘water’ to the start of any scandal. :yahoo:

I have some sympathy for Nixon. Compared to some of the other crimes US governments have commited this was really insignificant.

  • #10629

I have some sympathy for Nixon. Compared to some of the other crimes US governments have commited this was really insignificant.

The Watergate scandal happened at a time when many Americans were more involved in political issues — the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, pollution/environmental concerns, etc. — and so there was more general outrage at what Nixon’s inner circle were being accused of, and we watched the investigation unfold on a daily basis on the nightly news. These days, our attention span is much shorter, and the nightly news is more about entertainment than investigating the truth.

    Happy New Year!!  :bye:

I wouldn’t disagree, various forays overseas have caused so much more harm. However what he did broke the law of the land and technically those didn’t.

So I can’t agree with Kalman’s point he was innocent, you don’t get a pardon if you did nothing wrong to begin with, but I can understand your perspective too.

  • #10641

No, the frame job was so good, Nixon knew he couldn’t fight it

  • #10669

Is there anything to substantiate that theory?

  • #10676

No, the frame job was so good, Nixon knew he couldn’t fight it

That is absolute tripe. Even Nixon knew he’d done something wrong, which he admitted when he defended himself by claiming that if the President does something it’s not illegal. That’s not something you say when think you’re being framed, it’s an affirmative defence.

  • #10679

That’s exactly what they want you to think!

  • #10681

He knew nobody would listen if he said he was framed; he had to act as if he’d done it, otherwise, he would not only look like a crook, but a crackpot, too. I’m not sure I believe it, I’m saying it’s a strong possibility.

That, or he did do it.

Maybe we could have a separate thread for conspiracy theories?

(Of course, what the mods don’t want you to know is that there already is one.)

I am trying my best not to view these past few days as some kind of reset, but it is hard.

I resolve to stay away from peas and grapefruit.

  • #10746

I am always in favour of discussing conspiracy theories. The Nixon thing is new to me, I’d like to hear more about it.

  • #10756

It’s somewhat worrying that Kevin Spacey’s accusers keep turning up dead.

  • #10766

I have absolutely no proof whatsoever that the recent rash of attacks on Jews in and around the NYC area are secretly being orchestrated by the Zionist Occupation Government to garner sympathy for the Jewish people and thus make it easier for them to push through their plan to control the world without resistance. No proof whatsoever. But if I posted this “claim” on certain social media sites, hundreds of people would believe it and spread it around until it becomes a pseudo-reality.

So, yeah, spread this “Nixon is innocent” theory all you want, but just realize that it has as much credibility as my claim, and those who spread it have as much proof as I do.

The Kevin Spacey thing, though….

  • #10770

But if I posted this “claim” on certain social media sites, hundreds of people would believe it and spread it around until it becomes a pseudo-reality.

Think how credible the claims become if you get major newspapers and media networks like CNN to spread them. ;)

It’s weird how county borders affect public transport. I’ve been looking at going to a play in Malvern, which isn’t that far from where I live, but is in the next county over. I don’t drive, so I’d be reliant on public transport. The trains run fairly regularly, but are over-priced (weirdly, it’s cheaper to get a ticket to Worcester and then a separate ticket from there to Malvern than one direct ticket, despite it being on the exact same train, which just goes to show the state of privatised railways). I’ll check the bus, I thought.

Now, from Tewkesbury (where I live) to Cheltenham (the next town over, in the same county) there’s regular bus travel. Three buses an hour all week. To get to Gloucester, the nearest city, there’s usually two buses an hour running regularly. To get to Malvern, which is probably between Cheltenham and Gloucester in terms of distance, but in the other direction, there’s one bus. That’s one bus total. It goes from Malvern to Tewkesbury on a Monday morning and then it goes back on a Monday afternoon. What is the point in that?! I assume it’s one of those odd little public service requirements the bus company is required to fulfil to get the routes, but how is that of any use to anyone?

It’s bizarre that an arbitrary, invisible border can lead to such a tangible divide between communities that are so nearby.

Worcester, Tewkesbury, and Gloucester are all towns in Massachusetts so, being biased towards Massholes, I immediately thought Martin was discussing Massachusetts transit and giving me more ammunition to make fun of that state.  in doing my due diligence, i discovered there is no Malvern in MA and realized Martin hasn’t suddenly moved to the states. O well. as Emily Litella used to say, NEVERMIND!

My school used to do an exchange trip with Tewksbury Mass for sixth formers, but unfortunately it was scrapped long before I was old enough to do it. Perhaps for the best. It would have been exhausting writing in the missing E on all those signs over there.

    The Kevin Spacey thing, though….

I’ve heard conspiracy theory stuff that the all-out weird Let Me Be Frank video that Spacey did in character as Frank Underwood last year is actually not addressed to the viewers of House of Cards, as it pretends to be, but to the secret child abuse circles of the government and that it’s all veiled threats that he will blow up their secrets if they allow him to be found guilty.

Note also how he drinks out of a cup that has the British Royal crest on it. Knowing what we know about Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein, him holding a cup with the royal crest on it could be seen as a threat, especially given how he says “soon enough, you will know the full truth” while raising the cup to his lips again at 02:32.

I don’t really believe any of that, but it’s definitely some weird fucking shit coming together. Maybe we do need a conspiracy theory thread…

  • #11204

I didn’t see the awards show last night but some comments were that Ricky Gervais was mean and hitting below the belt and others said that he was telling it like it is giving them what they deserve.

  • #11507

So this is a thing: you can get a personal shout-out from Danica McKellar.

For a very reasonable fee, you can have actress Danica McKellar (The Wonder Years, Big Bang Theory) send a video-message to your spouse or sibling or worst enemy, and the fee goes to a charity. My business partner’s brother received a birthday greeting from her recently, and I think this is a great idea. Why isn’t every celebrity doing this?!

  • #11525

There was a story not long back that loads of celebrities do. There are personal message sites that have loads of them signed up.

It seems there though they just pocket the cash rather than donate it so good on Danica for that.

Loads are, there’s a huge amount on that site and others like it. They’re a tad cringeworthy though – I don’t think I’ve managed to watch through a whole one. And I think every message is also uploaded publicly on the site for potential customers to see.

Does anyone have any experience with Duolingo? I started using it the other day, on a whim, and I’m wondering if anyone’s had much success actually picking up another language with it.

I’m doing German and Japanese at the moment. The German is mostly a refresher so far, as I did it to GCSE at school, and that’s going well (although I’m baffled and annoyed that Madchen is neutral rather than feminine, given it’s literally referring to feminine people – sort it out, Germany!), but the Japanese I’m less convinced by.

I’m getting through the lessons successfully, but I don’t feel like I’m actually picking anything up, rather I’m just exploiting the gamified elements to get by. Like, it’ll say “which of these is the character for “shi”?” and give you four options, but they all speak out what they are when you tap them, so you can always get the right answer without really knowing it, you know?

  • #11845

Yeah I’ve used Duolingo before for French and Spanish.

I ended up just learning in my own by diwnloadung free audio lessons from online and reading other sources, and, probably importantly,  practicing with people who knew the languages.

I found it useful as a starter tool only, tbh.

  • #11874

In anticipation of our upcoming trip to Japan, Liz began using Duolingo. She lived in Tokyo as a preteen for a year or so, so she already had a background in the language. She found that Duolingo helped her remember a lot of what she already knew, and that her prior experience made it easy for her to understand and translate the audio lessons.

I, on the other hand, ended up playing it like a game, rather than actually learning, just to get through each lesson. I’ve decided I’ll just stand really close to her while we are there and let her do all the talking. As usual.

  • #11948

Duolingo is a fun wee game and useful for pronunciations. A good way to begin.

The best way is to find someone to chat to. You may have a local German or Japanese language club. Most universities offer open learning – sometimes referred to as lifelong learning – evening classes. There are loads of free resources online. Or maybe Jerry could fit you in his suitcase. :)

I’ve used Netflix shows for French. But I’ve just checked, alas, no German or Japanese option. Should be an option on dvd.

I now want to test Bojack’s Spanish.

  • #11950

    Japanese option

I’m sure Lorcan can recommend some excellent anime with subtitles.

My question is: Why do you want to learn Japanese? Does the reason require you to be able to read the language or just speak/understand it?   If the latter, why bother with a program that teaches you to read, especially with Japanese, which has Kanji, which tells you no phonetic information? For languages like that, it’s not worth it, since there are programs that teach you just to understand and speak. I’m not learning Hanzi for Chinese, as all I want to do is speak and understand.

  • #11956

Does anyone have any experience with Duolingo? I started using it the other day, on a whim, and I’m wondering if anyone’s had much success actually picking up another language with it.

From all the accounts I’ve read it’s viewed as a good starter, my daughter is doing French on it now and is retaining stuff, but if you truly want to learn a language you’ll need to expand into other areas.

I follow this American lady on Twitter who learnt Welsh remotely and she started with Duolingo but said to really get into into speaking the language needed other resources like watching videos, finding people to chat to online etc.

There’s always an aspect that’s personal. My brother can learn very well from just reading a book, he taught himself to program as a small kid from a Commodore 64 manual. I can’t do that, I need a class and some human interaction to really grasp things well.

I’m more like your brother then, I’m best at learning something when given the resources and left alone to get on with it.

Thanks for all your input. I think I’m going to stick with the German lessons on it, just to refresh what I learnt back at school, but probably drop the Japanese.

I am sorry I keep harping on this, but… I hadn’t realised Spacey had made another Christmas video. It’s called KTWK (Kill Them with Kindness), and it’s full of veiled threats. I mean, the most benign interpretation would be that he keeps making fun of his situation using his House of Cards character, but… it really does feel like he is at the very least making fun of his accusers and the fact that they keep dying, and at the most that he is threating those of his accusers who are left that they’ll be next if they don’t back off. It’s really surreal.

Doing a linoprint of a Cacodemon from Doom this evening. Posted it up on my Instagram feed and got a “like” from John Romero (the daddy of Doom) and a couple of nice comments from classic British comic artist Mike Dorey. Two people who i would never imagine crossing paths. Does that make me the single degree of separation between them?

  • #12558

    That’s awesome. Nice one!

  • #12601

Thanks! I’m actually trying something new with this called a reduction print. I’ll carve more off of the lino tile and print a second layer (of black) on top. It means you can’t reprint the design bit it looks super effective when done well. Hopefully i don’t mess it up.

  • #12644

Reduction prints turned out pretty well overall. Just one major fuckup and a few that almost but didnt quite line up properly.

  • #12665

That looks really good. You should consider selling some of these.

  • #12699

    Very nice work, Bruce.  :good:

  • #12735

Thanks for the kind words chaps!

You should consider selling some of these.

Folks have said that before but I’m not sure if i can be bothered with the hassle. Taking money for it also means the quality control would have to be higher and I’d have to buy decent paper rather than stealing it from the photocopier at work!

I have done a bunch of art drops over the past year – bunched a handful of prints in a poly pocket and dumped them near the large murals and public artworks in town or in prominent graffiti areas. I usually put my Instagram tag on them so I occasionally get nice messages back from folks who pick them up.

  • #12740

    That’s cool, nice idea.

  • #12741

Theres a wee group of artists who do this regularly during the warmer/drier months. I’d been lucky enough to find a few things so figured it was only fair i returned the favour.

    wee group of artists

when I first saw this I thought the artists were wee    but then grammar kicked in.

That is a great idea Bruce. You did a great job with this. first getting recognition from the creator then distributing the pictures so others can enjoy them.

Every time I see Descartes I remember my high school Junior year Math class. A kid named Maurice pronounced Descartes as DES CARTES. The teacher then referred to Maurice as Morris.

weird the things that stick in your memory.

But Maurice is pronounced like Morris.

COPPER KNICKERS! I still think of Copernicus as Copper Knickers because a wee lad read it that way. Except one time I said it out loud amongst a group of fancy folks. They were not amused. But, hey, at least I entertained myself.

Also, I thought the next full moon wasn’t due until February. There must’ve been a secret one today because today made you lot seem normal. (Dave made me say that btw)

So my buddy Garth, down in Australia, who runs the Dark Horizons website, was at some sort of family shindig over the weekend (staying out of the fires and rain, I assume) and was enjoying the day when his 3-year-old niece, looking all nice and sweet and innocent like 3-year-old does, abruptly ups and chucks her plate of food across the room – and right through a 65″ flatscreen.

Just in case you’re having a bad day!
