We need a group name for people who post on The Carrier.

In the old days we were Millarworlders – what are we now?

Carriers?

Carrierers?

Carrierists?

Yeah, look, Christian, I’m sorry. I know you generally put a lot of effort into murder prep and you’re consistently one of the boards best murderers, but we’re just not in a position to be doing any murders at this time.  Thanks for understanding

I am starting not to like this Zuckerberg guy who is behind Facebook and I haven’t (neither intend to) seen the movie…

Why don’t you intend to? It’s a good movie. It was written by Aaron Sorkin.

This morning I was talking to my wife about possibly watching Hamilton tonight on Disney+ and I quickly realised that she had no idea what it was, what the concept was, who was in it etc.

How does something huge like that pass you by entirely?

When I mentioned Lin-Manuel Miranda she looked blank and then said “I thought it was about pirates or something.”

    Cornwallis pirated Nova Scotia.

People can be oblivious to plenty. I’ve been surprised loads of times. I’ll think of examples when I’m thinking of something else.

“Cornwallis Nova Scotia” 100% sounds like some Harry Potter spell.

“But what does it DO Hermione?”

“It makes your accent completely indistinguishable.”

    “Like GIBBERISH?”

“No, Ron. That’s not what I said. In-dis-tin-guish-ab-le. It means–”

“I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS, HERMIONE!”

I definitely have my own cultural blind spots. Whenever we watch quiz shows and a nominally easy question comes up about one of the popular soaps, I’m always clueless.

  • #31848

I think the only reason I know anything about Hamilton is because Ronnie was a big fan. Without that, I’m sure I would have heard the name but I doubt I would know anything else about it.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be an interesting read (edit: I think I’ve read the original web version of it and liked it), but that’s a horribly designed book. The cover’s awful and they surely can’t be serious about doing interior pages of black text on bright red and yellow and red text on white pages?

The design choices of the ROM books often seem to be fairly bold. Not 100% sure on this one – it feels like they may be making up for the lack of colour in the form of official images etc., which is an unfortunate weakness. It would have been nice to have some graphics or original artwork in there.

I think I’ve read the original web version of it and liked it

I gather that this incorporates those original articles, a bunch of new ones, and loads of extra stuff besides, so it should be a good read.

Yeah, he’s doing more of them:
    https://www.polygon.com/2020/7/7/21314359/street-fighter-oral-history-book-kickstarter

If funded, the book will contain a significantly expanded version of the Street Fighter 2 oral history that Polygon ran in 2014, our new series of stories detailing what happened before and after SF2, bonus chapters exclusive to the book, and other fun surprises.

    Here’s the rundown:

    • An updated, reedited, and expanded version of our SF2 oral history
    • New chapters covering Street Fighter, Super Street Fighter 2, Darkstalkers, Street Fighter Alpha, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game, Street Fighter EX, Street Fighter 3, and more
    • Quotes from more than 50 interviews with former Capcom employees
    • A foreword by SF2 planner Akira Nishitani
    • A theme song by SF2 composer Yoko Shimomura
    • More than 60 portraits by illustrator Tyrell Cannon
    • Design by Callin Mackintosh
    • Additional design and publishing by Darren Wall/Read-Only Memory

If you’re not interested in the book but still want to read the stories, don’t worry. We’ve got lots of stuff planned to run on the site over the next seven months.

I saw Madonna (in person) in a hotel in Paris in, I think, 2012.

She was wearing sunglasses (inside) but even then she looked way older than what she does in that super candid photo.

  • #32159

Yeah, I mean, there’ve been papparazzi photos around of Madonna looking terribly old for what feels like decades. I mean, it’s fine, it’s great that she can still stage herself looking good and be a sex symbol, but I do wonder who is even interested anymore.

(Probably lots and lots and lots of people though – I am sure that photo has millions of likes on instagram.)

  • #32181

I have mixed feelings about it.

    There is another B.

Charlie Kaufman has written a novel about a character called B who hates Charlie Kaufman. He wrote the book because he couldn’t get work in movies or TV at the time. That’s not right. I mean, he’s only made some of the greatest movies ever. I love Charlie Kaufman.

Still, it led to this novel which, according to the interviewer, is “stuffed to its mad gunwales with gags and ideas and scattershot erudition.” Fair warning, the interview is stuffed with plot spoilers. I won’t spoil it here.

I want to read his novel NOW! He’s also working on a new script.

I did like his response to the final question posed: Does he feel as though reality is a stranger and more fragile thing than most people imagine? “Jesus yes!” he yelps.

Hmmm… What if I made Charlie Kaufman up inside my head?

Anyways, I finished reading On Beauty yesterday. (There’s no chance that took a month. Seems, at the same time, like forever and only a few days ago).

I have now reached a verdict. Which face read it right? What do they know? Do they know things? Lets find out.

  • #32788

    Yay! Lets find out!

I have been watching some variety/late show segments on youtube lately where they interview celebrities in isolation on zoom.

Man some of those guys are going bonkers. It’s like watching these people like they really are without being coached by their media coach and appearance advisor.  Tom Hanks has a touch of the crazy talkative dude you try to get away from at the grocery store.

I don’t know what it’s like for you, Christian doesn’t experience reading the way I do. I used to think everyone read the same way. I’ve been attempting a review of On Beauty. It’ll wind up longer than her book! I think it’s her best novel. It’s a very timely read. Any other recommendations?

I’ve watched a lot of zoom interviews. Entertainers like Hanks are used to having an audience to bounce off energy-wise, even if it’s a single interviewer, or they pour everything excess into their acting roles.

I read the EU is for 42 % covered with forest. I thought this was surprising, I always assumed it was much lower. Most is in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe though, the Netherlands is the lowest with only 8 %. If you take Europe as a whole I think it must be higher, seeing as Russia and Belarus probably have a lot of forest.

Was it ever common in English to refer to Belarus as “White Russia”? This is the common name in Dutch, Wit-Rusland. Bela is Belarussian for “white”. I wonder if they see themselves as a subgroup of Russians.

I wouldn’t say it’s common, most people would equate it with the drink.

Saying that it does say on a Google search it’s viewed in English as either an ‘archaic’ or ‘historical’ reference to eastern Belarus. Which rather indicates it was used but not really anymore.

In truth I think in the English speaking world Belarus isn’t really referenced very much. When I was growing up our map in geography class had ‘Soviet Union’ on it. It’s been 30 years since we’ve started associating again with the individual countries but some are louder in the news than others and I mainly know of Belarus from when Wales plays them in European football qualifiers.

I miss a lot of the Millarworlders.

I think the end of MW became a jumping off point for a lot of them. I don’t say this as a slam but it the fall of MW may have been the opportunity to let go and move on. I see some of them on Facebook and Instagram so I know they’re still active online.

When you consider that through various incarnations, this general collective has been going for around 20 years. That’s an eternity in internet time. I joined MW January 4, 2004. (I joined FB February 2008.)

There will come a day in the not too distant future where there simply won’t be enough members to sustain The Carrier financially. There’s only a relative handful of us that post regularly compared to the official number of 91 members.

Ive thought about leaving many times myself, but frankly I just dont care enough about other people to give them that reprieve.

At the end of the day, all you can do is try to be reasonable, rational and polite, and if its day when you fail to do that, then hope the other person is not failing at the same time.

I think this is a good rule of thumb.

And I think this is an opportune moment to say that I regret the recent conversations where we have been on opposing sides and it has got a bit testy. There is genuinely no ill will from my side and no bad feeling, so maybe we can use this as an opportunity to clear the air, draw a line under it, and other similar clichés. What do you think?

  • #34003

Hey, I don’t have any issue with you, mate! Sometimes I’m not 100% on board with the choices you make but I think you always conduct yourself with politic and reason.

I know I am an asshole and sometimes it’s a mental health thing, sometimes I’m genuinely wanting to die on that hill, but on the whole I don’t really harbour any ill will to anyone here.  I think people who engage in dialogue in the way that you and Christian often do help to balance out the hot-heads like me.

As a side-note: I genuinely don’t like the “thanks” system, but I’m in the minority on that.  Just because I don’t click a “thanks” on your post doesn’t mean I don’t like or appreciate what you’re saying.  I will usually try to engage in a different way then clicking the thanks button, unless it’s just as a sort of sign off.

I think that’s a good approach. I think the downside of a Thanks/Likes system is that it can often become a shorthand substitute for a more meaningful actual personal reaction and interaction, which is usually preferable I think – if only to keep the conversation going!

Having the system at least lets people choose either (or both!) I guess.

Yeah, I think the system is probably important to use.  I’ve read a lot about the psychology of social media likes only because I’m interested in it, and the downside is that we’re now so accustomed to that form of approval that people can feel disengaged if they’re not receiving approval.  It’s a type of market that has been designed to follow a similar psychology to entrance compulsive gamblers, and I can’t in good conscious promote it.

I do the same thing with facebook – often using the like system ironically, if at all.

But, with that said, it’s now a necessary system to indicate that people are participating in the conversation beyond just responses. Having an “audience” has become important for our psychological interactions on the internet, because we don’t have the same contextual understanding that you might in a face to face or video/teleconference.

The thanks system is probably as good as we can get it, and I’ve previously mentioned my issues with it and at least suggested the text be minimised, but I understand it’s an important tool.

I was in a real dilemma over whether to ‘Thanks’ that post. Hopefully I did the right thing…

I think forums are just kinda going away, unfortunately. The web is really corporate stuff now, youtube and humongous social media things and streaming services and subscription websites. And apps or whatever it is people do on smart phones. (And porn of course) Forums and quirky, interesting sites for fringe interests seem to be a lot less abundant these days.
