I used to post a “real life” Homer Simpson in the picture thread. It was creepy then. Imagine now with AI…

    Like we have to imagine.

“Traden” as the Dutch version of the English verb to trade (especially when talking about stock trading) might be the worst anglicism in the Dutch language. Stupid morons, there is a perfectly fine Dutch alternative.

@christian… fellow… You really did not have to do that. AI is creepy as it is now on social media. No need for that much here

    Another space joy ride:

The network news here in the US is referring to this as a HISTORIC SPACE FLIGHT!. Setting aside the argument about whether or not 30 seconds of weightlessness qualifies as a “space flight”, what was historic about this? How does the incident of some pseudo-celebrity women riding on a spaceship for 10 minutes in 2025 deserve to be called historic?!
Amelia Earhart becoming the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic? Historic
Bessie Coleman becoming the first woman of color to obtain a pilot’s license? Historic
Valentina Tereshkova becoming the first female cosmonaut in space? Historic
Eileen Collins becoming the first female space shuttle pilot AND shuttle commander? Historic

Katy Perry, Gayle King, etc. sitting in a rocket for 10 minutes?

I read a bit about hangovers and it’s funny that scientists don’t really know what the cause is (well yeah the cause is alcohol but we don’t really know what it is alcohol does in the body that causes the hangover. A whole lot of different processes probably play a part but the exact picture of what happens is unclear)

I am getting tired of this Diddy stuff. News media puts it out there for the sensationalism of wild parties of rich moguls. I lump it all together: Diddy, Hefner in his day, Dubai, billionaire yachting. Of course guys like Hefner steered (or “pimped out”) some of those girls as “party favors” towards their buddies and felt they had the money and clout to get away with it. What else is new? Jail him.

    ——————

They caught 4 of the 10 prisoners who broke out of jail in New Orleans and they arrested some of the jail workers who helped them escape. Wow.

This is pretty funny. There was upheaval here over why prices in supermarkets in surrounding countries are lower than in the Netherlands. It turned out we’re addicted to discounts, buying items when they’re on sale, like 2 items for the price of one. So we go to supermarkets that have such sales. But the supermarkets, in order to be able to afford to offer such a discount, raise the regular price, to make up for the value they lose in the discount. So regular prices here tend to be quite a bit higher on certain items than in countries like Belgium or Germany.

Seriously though, I’ve been looking at a few articles on the future of AI as in whether it will replace coding like:

    https://www.upskilled.edu.au/skillstalk/will-ai-take-over-your-programming-job

Can’t conclude but it’s best to come across these days as a coder who can manage/utilize AI, whatever the hell that means.

There are no future-proof careers. STEM careers were supposed to be that, but there were a lot of layoffs in tech sector.

Went to the Random Thread, could have easily gone to the Politics thread.

So, a lot of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) adjoins the border with Washington State, even outside further east Abbotsford and Chilliwack still has easy access to the USA.

Damn, Northern Washington State communities (Bellingham) are dependent on Canadian visits.
Seattle has no business visiting there, unless cross border traffic.

Like, I have a real hankering to go to Trader Joes and get a can of British Toffee.
Get something at a better price than I could, a different array of products, and I can decide if I want to buy.
Like, isn’t that trade at it’s most basic?

You’re always treated with respect, these are good people, and hey! glad that Covid is over.

Just, well, an asshole is in power.
And very much attacked a friend (we always will be, especially when needed (the world’s on fire…)).

Communities just getting back, and Canadian visits way, way down.
    Why would we?
A consumer has the power to not open the wallet.
Until he grows the fuck up.

‘We’ll be ready for you’: Bellingham council pens letter to B.C. residents

    Very much appreciate the professionalism.
The ‘open arms’ and ‘whenever you’re ready’ comment, with the smile (because you are treated like that) and I really want to get my toffee.

To wrap it up, I love you guys!
Just do a better job than hitting an ear!

I’m listening to Bat Country on youtube, which is an alcoholic who is recounting his struggles with alcohol and sobriety. He has the most harrowing binge drinking stories I ever heard. It’s very insightful but devastating because you can almost feel the relapse coming. Every now and then there is a deep sigh where you can feel his pain. And his desire to grab a drink.

    He has good jokes too.

A drunk gets three wishes from a genie. He thinks ffor a while about his first wish and says “I’d like a pint of beer that never runs out!”. Done, says the genie and a big pint glass full of beer appears. The guy starts drinking and magically the glass fills itself up again.

The genie asks “what about the second and third wish?”

The drunk thinks for a while and then says “I’d like two more of these!”

A drunk gets into a conversation with someone on the street and tells him he’s Jesus Christ. The person doesn’t believe him and says, no you’re not, you’re drunk, get out off here. The drunk insists and says he can prove it. He walks into a bar, and when the barkeeper sees him entering he shouts out “Jesus Christ! Not you again!”

It’s really painful to watch. I think many addicts have a problem with moderation, in many ways. I think I’m kind of an addict in some ways as well, and we take things to the extreme. You see it in the way he talks about things, and in the things he uses to distract from his urge to drink: exercise, sports, work, sex, video games, he is just a bit too extreme about things.

I passed by my local Best Buy store and showed a pic of my TV screen and he confirmed it
    Dead pixels.
I have a choice now to either buy a newer model smart tv or these YouTube
diagnostic videos that flash these bright lights for hours to sort of “push” the screen and
there is a chance that the pixels “might” activate. So, I will try the free experiment and if it
fails, buy a new one down the line.

Yeah, there’s very little difference between cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup, coke will taste the same and be just as bad for you.

They do have a different taste, HFCS unsurprisingly tasting a bit syrupy. There’s definitely a difference between old UK Dr Pepper (before they added sweeteners) and the US imports I’ve had since and between UK Vanilla Coke (which has disappeared) and imported US Vanilla Coke. But then I’m one of those weirdoes that can absolutely taste the difference between sugar and artificial sweeteners as well.

The most interesting thing about this though is it potentially breaking the stranglehold Iowa corn farmers have on US politics. HFCS is only used because corn is grown to surplus through tax incentives and because Iowa is the first primary no presidential candidate ever wants to suggest scrapping it because it’ll tank them there and derail their entire campaign.

That would make things so much worse. Everyone would know that’s bullshit. It’s common knowledge that Trump and Republicans associated with Epstein. It would make it look like he’s still covering up pedos.

Unfortunately Trump is president and most of his supporters will believe him.

But that’s the problem he has right now, a huge chunk of his base doesn’t believe him.

He promised that when he got back into office, he would release all the files. He has backtracked to the point where he has denied there is a list and called his supporters stupid for asking about it. He has the FBI working around the clock to flag every time his name is mentioned in the files.

Adding fuel to the fire is that the longer this goes on, the worse it looks on him. Some of his disgruntled base are even saying he’s protecting pedos, and one himself. A lot of stuff is also being dredged up about how close he was to Epstein.

He is throwing everything he can out there to distract from this. He is genuinely scared.

    We’ll see.

Long story short about Coca Cola: In 1979, the price of sugar went up about 5 cents a pound. That meant billions in cost for Coke. So they switched to corn syrup in the States and it’s been that way ever since.

As for 47 distracting everybody from Epstein files: Now we know that the MLK assassination reports could have been released a LONG time ago without much complications, among other documents coming to the fore. And now Obama is being blamed and there is some charge for treason? It makes me wonder…

He is, but I still don’t expect anything to come from this.

But it is fun to watch him squirm, at least, and to see his base fall apart.

The past few weeks, there are over 5 pics like this in my area. Whatever crew that does this “operation”, they spread to the neighborhood:

    ——-

Playing an old friend chess. I did a novice opening of the Wayward Queen and he got pissed. He felt I was insulting his intelligence.

He told me to open with something else.

Al, do you have a car, or do you rely on public transportation?

The latter most of the time. Having a car in the city and dealing with parking will …  never mind. When I have to drive out of the city, I rent.

There are a few pics like this throughout the neighborhood. The cops have some video from the cameras but these guys are masked. It’s a tire stealing operation that now targeted the area.

That happens with bikes here occasionally. In bike racks you sometimes see bikes with parts taken off, like wheels or saddles. I’m not sure if they do it for the money or just for the thrill.

I recall a visit to Copenhagen in 2014 where, at the Osterport train station, we saw racks and racks of bicycles placed on the exterior wall by commuters taking the train to the city. As New Yorkers, we were pleasantly shocked to see that none of the bikes were secured with locks; they were just left there, with the expectation that the bikes would still be there when the commuters returned home that evening.

By way of comparison regarding bicycles left on the street in Manhattan, see Al-X’s photo above.

That is pretty cool. It is not at all like that in the Netherlands though, bike theft is very common here. Almost all bikes are locked when parked.
