I totally missed this one until I heard it on the radio yesterday.
Douglas Trumbull obituary | Movies | The Guardian
Asked in 1978 to describe his job, the visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull said: “I’m in the area of creating experiences that are beyond the realm of physical reality.” Trumbull, who has died aged 79 from cancer, was instrumental in bringing to the screen three of the greatest science-fiction films ever made: Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982).

I was never a huge Screaming Trees fan compared to other bands from the scene, but they were a frequent presence on the radio when I was a teenager

William Hurt Dead: Oscar Winner for ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Was 71 – Variety
This is tough news. William Hurt was THE American lead actor of the 1980s, from ALTERED STATES to BODY HEAT to THE BIG CHILL to KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN to BROADCAST NEWS and more than a half-dozen other great roles in between. And in the 2000s he brought his talents to unforgettable key supporting roles in films like THE VILLAGE and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and SYRIANA and THE GOOD SHEPHERD and, of course, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, which endeared him to millions of fans of the MCU films.
Rest In Peace.

Hawkins was an absolute dude in every definition of the term. Such weird news to just wake up to and read.
50 years young is taken from us way too early.
Don’t know why my brain wants to rub salt in the wound, but consider the fact that Keith Richards is still alive at 78.
“Life isn’t fair” is an understatement.
Stephen E. Wilhite, the creator of the gif (giraffe interchange format) died on March 24th.
(Clearly, since the g is for giraffe, gif is pronounced jif)
oops
same
Anticipating a couple more deaths, Sean?

Giraffe is pronounced with a hard g, you fool.

Well, g whiz!
Anticipating a couple more deaths, Sean?
Phone would just not work properly today. Trying for some Jif Gifs (and yes, I am pronouncing them differently)
It’s funny how today everybody accepts that “GIFs are animations”.
GIFs are actually pictures. The ability to animate them was later added to the specification, but that was never intended as the main use as it’s actually a terrible format for animating. Except then a generation of bad web designers realised they could now easily add pointless spinning and flashing crap to their pages, and now “GIFs are animations”.
Edit: sorry for derailing the obituary thread

Gerry is also pronounced with a hard g!
Gerry is also pronounced with a hard g!
Gary is hard, Gerry(pronounced Jerry) is not.

Gary is hard, Gerry(pronounced Jerry) is not.
That’s not how you pronounce Gerry.
It is where I am.
don’t you mean
“OI RRest me case, boyo”
Boyo is Welsh, not Irish.
It’s the 21st Century, people. If Gary and Gerry both want to be hard together, then they should be able to without any judgement!

I was watching an old episode of Castle and he had Det. Kevin Ryan’s character speak in an bad Irish accent

Just to be clear, we’re talking about a fictional Gerry here. With a G, not a J. And I really don’t feel that way about Gary.
Sven Melander, beloved swedish comedian dead at 74.
This one hits hard. He was a fantastically funny guy.
My favourite sketch of his, although there are many more that could qualify:
Boyo is Welsh, not Irish.
It’s neither. American comics for some reason liked to apply ‘boyo’ to Irish speech and English sitcoms to Welsh characters but I have never in my life met anyone that actually says it.
You will hear ‘mun’ in Wales as a version of ‘man’ and also ‘butt’ which is a contraction of ‘butty’ or ‘buddy’ but nobody says ‘boyo’.
nobody says ‘boyo’.

Keep it to the Neal Adams RIP thread, please.
Sad news about Adams. He wasn’t a saint, but he used his status to fight for creators’ rights against the very companies that were hiring him, risking his future career on behalf of older comics artists who had been (in his opinion and that of many fans) unfairly treated and compensated by the publishers. He fought the good fight, and deserves to be remembered for that.
Naomi Judd
Naomi Judd
It’s somewhat disconcerting that her family stated that they lost her “to mental illness”; it would be very tragic if this was a suicide.
Yes, but that statement just kind of lingers there and you can’t unhear it.
Some are already running with that.
Journalist Micah Kennedy wrote in a story posted on the website of News Channel 5, a television station in Nashville, that Judd “has died after taking her own life.” However, the family has not confirmed that.
Not the kind of thing you want to get wrong, and still feels dirty without a statement from the family.
Sad to hear she was dealing with depression, or anything else.
Anyone at all for that matter.
I can’t pretend to know, but since it’s being talked about, I can copy and paste this:
If you are struggling yourself, please be aware that help is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. Help is available 24 hours a day in multiple languages.

He was really good on Somebody Somewhere.

I always loved him in Remo Williams.

In addition to his fantastic soundtrack work, Vangelis recorded some awesome music with Yes frontman Jon Anderson that I never get tired of listening to. I guess I’ll have Mr. Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou on my Spotify playlist all day tomorrow.
Ray Liotta has died.
Huge and sudden loss for cinema. He was a good fella.

But also damn, I’m a big Depeche Mode fan and Fletch was a dude.
Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts, Duo That Ruled ’70s Soft-Rock With Hits Like ‘Summer Breeze,’ Dies at 80
Just learned that fantasy artist Ken Kelly passed away last week. Cause of death was not mentioned, but the man was 76. I always considered Kelly to be a worthy successor to the legend Frank Frazetta. He painted the cover the the KISS album “Destroyer” in the 1970s.
RIP to an inspirational artist.

RIP Monty
That piece of music is absolutely legendary. It is of the time it was written yet has become timeless.
It really is. He set some sort of standard for the whole genre with this piece, not at all unlike Ennio Morricone did with The Ecstasy of Gold.

I stumbled upon the original tune. It’s also by Monty Norman, and it was reworked into the James Bond theme we all know. But this one… It’s a bit different.
