Great in everything, from Midnight Run and Live and Let Die to Homicide: Life on the Streets.
So I sent out a text to multiple contacts about Yaphet Kotto. Got a ton of responses.
One of those guys that everyone likes.
And in all the stories I noticed lots of references to him being one to ‘break racial stereotypes’.
I have to say his character of Parker in Alien (1979) had me thinking of him as a person, race not thought of (somehow it was always an issue one way or the other in that era).
Of course I think of Alien and Al Giardello on Homicide.
Actually forgot about Mr. Big in Live and Let Die (1973) and a few ‘Oh yeah’ moments when I saw Brubaker (1980) and Midnight Run (1988) on the list.
And there is a ton of stuff on his list. That’s a good career.
One of the movie buff’s favorite is an old Isaac Hayes movie Truck Turner (1974).
RIP. You will be missed.
Edit to add:
Thinking about the cast of Alien. Now that Kotto joins John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Ian Holm on the other side the surving members are Sigourney Weaver (71), Veronica Cartwright (71), and Tom Skerritt (87)

There were three other cast credits for that film, including two actors who played the alien and the actor who voiced Mother, all of whom are also deceased. Sadly, no credit was given to the cat who played Jonesie.

For my money the funniest actress of all time. Lucille Bluth is a legendary performance, and Malory Archer is just as good. RIP.

I just wonder what will happen with Archer. Mallory is so integral to the show and the dynamics of the characters, especially Sterling. I don’t envy the producers of the show.

Jessica Walter Leaves Behind One Final Season Of FXX’s ‘Archer’

I don’t mean to spin the death of Jessica Walter, may she rest in peace, into something positive but I imagine they could make at least an entire season on how Archer deals, or rather does not deal, with grief from losing his mom.

I demand that the BBC cancels all programming and plays Bat out of Hell for 24 hours straight.
BooH was the first rock album I ever bought, and it’s still one of my favourites of all time. It’s also the first time I had ever seen an album sleeve that had “Songs by …” on the cover. They were telling us that the writer of these songs was every bit as important as the singer, and they were 100% right.
I heard the title track on FM radio and immediately ran out to buy the vinyl album, then proceeded to tell all my friends about this new guy “who is the new Bruce Springsteen!!”
I may have overshot on the Springsteen comparison, but it was still a great album, and Jim Steinman was a great lyricist and songwriter. R.I.P.
“who is the new Bruce Springsteen!!”
Did you know the piano player on Bat out of Hell is Roy Bittan, who is also Springsteen’s main pianist.
From Wikipedia:
Composer Jim Steinman wanted Bittan for the album due to his love for Springsteen’s early work, particularly on Born to Run. Since then, Bittan has regularly and nearly exclusively collaborated with Steinman.

Last night we lost John Paul Leon, one of the greatest draftsmen in the history of comics, the kind of artist that EVERY artist revered. Those who loved him had some warning, but not enough. pic.twitter.com/1x73cComE7

A fantastic, unique, artist, and only 49 years old. Terrible.
That sucks. He was a brilliant artist.
RIP
That’s awful. He’s one of the greatest to ever do it. His artwork on the Wildstorm mini The Winter Men is some of the best to ever come from that studio, and that’s saying something.

Just read his wife’s post about this on Facebook this morning. I fondly remember DAK from his F.O.O.M. days (yes, I was a member of that Marvel fan club). Sad news, and a strong reminder that COVID is not done with us yet.

My daughter loves his books. She has a Very Hungry Caterpillar toy and we took her to the Eric Carle museum in Western Mass which is on my old college campus. His art looks great blown up. His collage style is so electric. RIP.
