2020 can just fuck off.
It ain’t done yet:
Little Richard, Rock 'n' Roll Legend and 'Tutti Frutti' Singer, Dead at 87
Little Richard, the legendary rock, soul and funk artist and singer of hits like “Tutti Frutti” and “Good Golly Miss Molly,” died Saturday. He was 87.
The singer’s son confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, but the cause of death is unknown.
One of the founding fathers of rock ‘n’ roll, Richard (neé Richard Wayne Penniman) produced heaps of hits starting with “Tutti Frutti” in 1956 and continuing with tracks like “Long Tall Sally,” “Rip It Up,” “Lucille” and more. He was a renowned inspiration to many who came after him, including Elton John, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie, who were drawn to Richard for his thumping piano style, sexually charged lyrics and gospel-tinged vocals that spiked with energy. His songs changed music history, and have been covered by The Beatles, The Kings and Elvis Costello, among others.
Damn it, 2020:

Kristina Lugn, a very famous Swedish poet has passed today. She wrote some pretty dark stuff, with humour and warmth. Also one of the 18 member of Svenska Akademien, the me-too’d committe that among other things award the Nobel Prize of Literature.
I don’t think we’ll see an artist or even a person like Kristina Lugn again. Lugn literally means “calm” in swedish and regardless of whether you subscribe to nominative determinism, that name is so ridiculously fitting to her calm and patient demeanor and sometimes painfully slow delivery that it almost comes across as satirical.
During the Me-Too scandal surrounding Svenska Akademien, she was asked to comment on her way in to wark and gave her exact opinion on journalism trends of the day and age. As misdirected as it may have been at the time, I couldn’t help rekindling my adoration for her person.
2020 just keeps on taking.
Actor and comedian Jerry Stiller has died of natural causes, Ben Stiller says
Writer/editor Martin Pasko has died at the age of 65, according to friend and former DC Publiher Paul Levitz. The date or cause of death is unknown at this time.
The native Quebecer was a prolific writer, working primarily at DC but with also short stints at Marvel Comics and Disney Comics. He is well-known for his comic book runs on Superman, Action Comics, Saga of the Swamp Thing, and Justice League of America.
“He was the first of the fan generation to be the regular writer on Superman (then the prestige assignment at DC), helped bring Wonder Woman back to glory after her detour out of costume, and touched the lives of most of the DC heroes,” Levitz wrote.
In addition to comics, Pasko had a long career in television. In addition to serving as a writer/story editor on Batman: The Animated Series (co-writing Batman: Mask of the Phantasm even), he wrote episodes of Cheers, Rosanne, Thundarr the Barbarian, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
At various times, Pasko served as an editor for both DC and Disney Comics, and in the late 1990s and early 2000s was DC’s primarily liaison with Warner Bros. for the various TV and film adaptation of DC comic books.
Lots of people were touched. Walt and Louise Simonson were good friends. Hell of a year.
Austrian Princess Maria Galitzine dies at 31 from sudden cardiac aneurysm
Austrian Princess Maria Galitzine died earlier this month after a sudden cardiac aneurysm.
“Sadly, I can confirm that Princess Maria Galitzine Singh died on May 4, 2020, from a cardiac aneurysm,” Suzanne Pearson, delegate of the Emperor Karl League of Prayer in the United States, told USA TODAY in a statement Friday, directing to an obituary in the Houston Chronicle. The Emperor Karl League of Prayer is an organization that maintains the legacy of Emperor Karl I of Austria.
Maria, known by her married name of Maria Singh, was the daughter of Prince and Princess Piotr Galitzine and a descendant of Emperor Karl I and Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma of the Habsburg dynasty, the last emperor and empress of Austria. She was buried at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery on May 8.
Born in 1988 in Luxembourg, she returned with her family to Russia as a five-year old in 1993, according to the Chronicle obituary.
Galitzine lived and worked in Brussels, Chicago and Houston after attending the German School of Moscow and the CAD school in Belgium, specializing in interior design and furnishing, according to the obituary.
The princess was married to celebrity chef Rishi Singh, currently serving as the executive chef at Houston’s Hotel Derek, and the obituary referred to their two-year old son Maxim as “the apple of her eye.”
She is survived by her sisters Xenia Galitzine de Matta, Tatiana Galitzine Sierra and Princess Alexandra, her brothers, Princes Dmitri and Ioann and her parents, Princess Maria-Anna and Prince Piotr Galitzine.
Lynn Shelton, an indie filmmaker who helped popularize the mumblecore genre with works such as “Humpday” and “Your Sister’s Sister,” died Friday of a blood disorder. She was 54.
Shelton was best known for her naturalistic, understated approach to comedy and drama in low-budget films that were hits with the Sundance crowd, but she reached a wider audience with her work on television, helming episodes of “The Mindy Project,” “Mad Men,” “Glow,” and “Fresh Off the Boat.” Recently, Shelton directed four episodes of the Hulu series “Little Fires Everywhere,” an adaptation of Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller that starred Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.
Strange that the obit talks about him only being a voice in WALL-E when he was memorably in live action. And great in it.

Loved her on The Middleman.

I lost my friend yesterday. I lost someone who was a guidepost for me in this world and in my career. The world lost the warmest light and one of the most talented and gifted artists it’s ever known. Mary Pat Gleason was a beacon for me. This first clip is the very first thing we ever shot on The Middleman, which was the very first show I was lucky enough to be a real part of. I was so young and so green and SO NERVOUS. My vision was blurry and I couldn’t stop sweating and THANK GOD for Mary Pat being there with me. She grabbed my hand and said “Oh honey, I’m nervous too. Let’s be nervous together.” (She had nothing to be nervous about. This was her millionth show, she has been in everything you’ve ever seen.) And we did it. And she held my hand through the whole experience of that show, and after. The second clip is closer to her actual sweetness and her easy way of holding someone than Ida was. And also, I’ve included it so you get to hear her say those magic words too: “Oh, honey.” I love you so much Mary Pat. Thank you for everything. In this wild time in the world I’ll leave you with the best thing MM ever taught me: We get to hope because we fight for it.

Dennis O’Neil has died. RIP to a legend, you can’t have read a Batman book in the last 50 years that didn’t have his mark on it. He wrote many classic Bat stories but my favorites have always been “Birth of the Demon” and “There Is No Hope in Crime Alley.”

Dennis J. “Denny” O’Neil has died at age 81. As confirmed by his family, the legendary comic book writer died at home of natural causes on the night of June 11.

O’Neil was best known for his work on Batman, which included writing Batman, Detective Comics, and Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, as well as editing DC’s Batman titles from 1986 to 2000. He, editor Julius Schwartz, and artist Neal Adams are credited for guiding the Dark Knight back to his darker roots after a period of campiness brought on by the success of the 1960s Batman TV series.
During his time on Batman, he created/co-created Ra’s al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, Leslie Thompkins, Azrael, and Richard Dragon; he was also involved in the revitalization of the Joker and Two-Face as modern DC villains, and oversaw the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.
Alongside Adams, O’Neil also reinvigorated the characters of Green Arrow and Green Lantern by pairing them up as best friends and “hard-traveling heroes” who ventured the country righting wrongs while exploring complex issues of politics and social justice – one of the first comic book runs to do so in a nuanced way.
Also at DC, he wrote the iconic Superman vs. Muhammad Ali one-shot, the Armageddon 2001 event, as well as memorable runs on Justice League and the Question.

O’Neil also enjoyed a fruitful stint at Marvel, writing Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Daredevil, and was involved in the creation of Madame Web, Hydro-Man, Obadiah Stane, Lady Deathstrike, and the concept for the Transformers – including naming Optimus Prime. During his time editing at Marvel, he was the one who hired then-newcomer Frank Miller to take over the Daredevil title.
The writer also branched out to TV, writing episodes of Logan’s Run, Superboy, Batman: The Animated Series, and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.

In addition to writing and editing, O’Neil taught at Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts, was on the Hero Initiative’s Board of Directors, and wrote the instructional book The DC Guide to Writing Comics.
Late in his career, O’Neil was recognized in a broad sense for his accomplishments. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library honored him as the key speaker at its “Comic Books and Social Justice” weekend in December 2018, and the city of Phoenix, AZ proclaimed May 25, 2019 “Dennis O’Neil Day” in recognition of his impact both in the comic industry and to American society in general.

Fuck! The year that keeps on giving.
While some might never forgive Schumacher for Batman & Robin, remember that this is the guy that directed Falling Down. Clearly, not an inept filmmaker in any sense of the word.
He also did A Time To Kill which isn’t just a pretty good movie – it also, unless I’m misremembering, gave McConaughey a hollywood foothold.
Had no idea he was as old as 80.

Damn, RIP. Morricone was one of the greats. Anytime I heard one of his scores it was a banger, and he did a lot more great stuff besides the (also great) Spaghetti Westerns and giallos he’s most known for.
The country musician Charlie Daniels just died. I only know him from the two episodes of King of the Hill he appeared in. One of which I watched this morning while I was eating breakfast. Creepy.
There’s a lot of funny stories around Jack Charlton. He delivered the results with Ireland in the 90s but in a rather unconventional way.
He couldn’t remember anyone’s name quite famously, he called Tony Cascarino ‘Ice Creamio’. He called Liam Brady – Ian Brady – which he wasn’t best pleased about as Ian Brady was a paedophile serial killer.
My favourite though was when he was taking a training session and a mate drove up and said ‘there’s trout in the river’ (Charlton loved fishing) and he just excused himself and left halfway through. However he did it though, it worked for that Ireland team.

Galyn Görg has passed away at the age of 55, her rep confirms to E! News.
The actress, who appeared in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Robocop 2, died this week, just one day before her 56th birthday.
“Our beautiful Galyn has crossed over. She quietly fought a good fight but unfortunately passed away 1 day before her birthday 7/14/2020 in Hawaii to cancer,” Galyn’s rep, Sheila Legette, tells E! News in a statement. “Galyn had been very private about her battle with cancer the last 9 months. But remained positive and continued to enjoy life in Hawaii. She loved the ocean and was an amazing dancer as well as a talented actress.”
“Her heart was of silver and gold and her energy and presence brightened any room she entered. She was love and light,” the statement continues. “Galyn was a beautiful soul who loved life, art, dance and was a phenomenal Woman. She was not only a client but a good friend who will be missed beyond measure.”
Galyn, who portrayed character Helena on Fresh Prince in 1996, also appeared in a number of other popular TV series over the years, including Twin Peaks, A Different World and Star Trek: Voyager.
In recent years, Galyn had appeared in Parks and Recreation and How to Get Away With Murder.

John Saxon was the third star in the legendary ENTER THE DRAGON film from 1973, alongside Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly. I always took notice of him whenever I saw him on the big screen and (more often) as a guest star on a television show. And he appeared in LOTS of shows, as a quick browse of his IMDB page reveals.
One of the unsung greats, whose passing won’t get nearly the same news coverage as that of Regis Philbin. RIP Mr. Saxon.

I wouldn’t wish death on anyone but the foolishness inherent in trying to defy a virus is incredible. We had Boris Johnson boasting about shaking hands in a hospital ward and then rallies with nobody taking any precautions.
There’s plenty of scope for debate about whether some measures are too strict or not but challenging just common sense measures that cost next to nothing amazes me. A lot of these men are not young and they aren’t athletes.

This is a bit of a personal one, but Seb Patrick – who has written for various geek websites, ran the official Red Dwarf website, and even got a couple of bits in Empire and the Guardian over the years – sadly died of a suspected heart attack yesterday at 37, which is no age.
He has a wife and young kid and I feel sad that he’s gone and feel terrible for his family and close friends. He was one of those people I only knew to talk to online and never met in real life, but you still often feel like you know these online friends – and when they’re gone it’s still a loss, but one that feels harder to quantify.

John Hume died on Saturday. While not exactly a big name on the international stage, in the 90s he was one of the architects of peace in Northern Ireland, for which he and David Trimble were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998. He’d faded from public view after his retirement from politics in 2004 but won an RTÉ poll on the greatest Irish person in 2010. He was such a prominent figure in Irish culture in the 90s and his contributions to Northern Irish culture and politics go far beyond the peace process – though to be fair that justifiably overshadowed the other stuff.
