David Trimble has died.
Uh, never mind:
Tony Dow, ‘Leave It to Beaver’ Star, in Hospice Despite Representatives Announcing Death
Bernard Cribbins has died.
Very sad to see him pass on, he was a wonderful actor who brought a lot to everything he was in – even relatively light stuff like Doctor Who or Old Jack’s Boat (his kids TV series) was enhanced massively by his performance.
Just look at what he brought to scenes like this. Really moving stuff.
RTD’s tribute:
Bernard Cribbins (1928-2022) I love this man. I love him. That’s him as Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. D’you fancy doing some Shakespeare, Bernard? “Let me see the script.” He knew everyone! He’d talk about the Beatles and David Niven, and how he once sat on the stairs at a party impersonating bird calls with T H White. Then he’d add, “I said to Ashley Banjo last week…’ He loved being in Doctor Who. He said, ‘Children are calling me grandad in the street!’ His first day was on location with Kylie Minogue, but all eyes, even Kylie’s, were on Bernard. He’d turned up with a suitcase full of props, just in case, including a rubber chicken. And what an actor. Oh, really though, what a wonderful actor. We once took him to the TV Choice Awards and sent him up on his own to collect the award, and the entire room stood up and cheered him. That’s a lovely memory. He’d phone up and say, “I’ve got an idea! What if I attack a Dalek with a paintball gun?!’ Okay, Bernard, in it went! He loved Gill with all his heart; he mentioned her in every conversation we ever had. A love story for the ages. I’m so lucky to have known him. Thanks for everything, my old soldier. A legend has left the world.

He was the voice of baseball for over sixty years. He started when there was still a team in Brooklyn and followed the team west to LA. His smooth delivery was cherished. He will be missed.

Historian/author David McCullough dead at 89
This man is, hands down, the best writer of American history and biographies. Sad to know that I won’t be reading any new books from him.
Raymond Briggs has died.

What an amazing talent, not just for his children’s stories (which were a big part of my childhood, particularly Father Christmas Goes On Holiday which I adored) but also more adult-oriented books – When The Wind Blows is a heartbreaking, darkly comic masterpiece.
What a legacy he leaves.
Very sad. Raymond Briggs’s comics had as much influence on young me as any others, moving up from The Snowman to his more mature work.
It’s rare they referred to that way, because they came through traditional publishers, but when you have sequential panels (with word balloons when not silent) that’s what they were. He had an incredible storytelling talent, his stuff can make you laugh and cry which most stuff out there can’t.

Yes, it’s been somewhat amusing to see them continue to be referred to as “picture books” or illustrated stories or whatever. They’re comics! And brilliant ones at that.
Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier dies
The writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote many of the iconic R&B and soul songs of the 1960s and early 70s. Another sad loss.
I’ve fallen in love a bit with Wet Leg. They are the super hipster band to like right now but I think it is backed up by the variation in their music and just how much fun they seem to have.
(I don’t like the fake accents though, it’s fine to like the B-52’s from Atlanta Georgia but if you are from the Isle of Wight I’d prefer to hear that, I’m a lover of authentic accent music).

I enjoy them a lot too. They have a great sound.

Just heard this news from two sources; if true, sad news indeed.
Comic book inker Tom Palmer dead at 80
Palmer inked much of Neal Adams’ Marvel work including X-Men and Avengers, but was most noted for his inking of Gene Colan for most of the original TOMB OF DRACULA comic.
Palmer was always a top-tier inker whose inks brought an extrodanary quality to every penciler’s art. I always loved his inks on Steve Epting’s pencils during their run on th Avengers in the 1990s. That was some fantastic artwork.

Hilary Mantel has died.
I enjoy reading historical fiction, and Mantel’s WOLF HALL trilogy is one of the best of that genre (I’ve actually only read the first two books as I’m pacing them out, but I have the third book [Mirror and the Light] and I’m probably going start reading that now.)

Great actor. I loved his stint as Cracker in the 90s where I think they really changed the paradigm in cop shows. The level of ‘flawed protagonist’ took a big turn beyond just minor character tics.
Also great at comedy as well as drama. Cue training montage as Ken Livingstone.

Rock n roll cousin shagger Jerry Lee Lewis has died.
Huh. I thought he had died years ago.
I really liked that Great Balls of Fire biopic with Dennis Quaid back in the day. But while the underage marriage thing was, I think I remember, kind of frowned at in the movie, I’d guess that it hasn’t aged well.

Mandela effect!

Probably not, I was working in the cinema at the time that came out so watched it several times – albeit over 30 years ago. It didn’t ignore it as there was a huge storm when JLL went on tour in the UK and the tabloids placed it as a big scandal over her age (3 years below the age of consent there) and it did cover that.
I suspect if we watch it back though it was more sympathetic to him in that regard than it would be if made today.

A lot of sad losses for the comics world this week. Conroy was great. I particularly loved him in the Arkham games – as a result of that (probably moreso even than the animated series) he feels like the definitive voice of Batman.
Sad for Gallagher fans, but vs. Conroy it’s not in the same ballpark, not even same league.
Never got into Gallagher, and whatever platform he achieved to speak out was too right wing for me (although any right wing is too much for me, so bias admitted).
My friends cat died…RIP to a real one.

Gallagher in the 1980s was funny and insightful. As his star waned, he became a bitter person.
Here’s Marc Marin trying to interview him. It went off the rails.
