The semi-finals are over and the main event is tomorrow night, where so many questions will be answered: Which country has developed the best music during the pandemic? Which has gone stir crazy tried to create its own entirely new genre? Will the UK come last yet again? Will Iceland get the win they clearly deserved last year? Will Israel’s efforts be affected by political fallout (assuming they didn’t get knocked out in the semis already – I don’t watch those)?

What the actual fuck were we doing giving Lithuania 12 points in the public vote?

A good song won, and the U.K. got absolutely humiliated….So overall, a good night 😀

Hmm, yeah better Italy than France or Switzerland.

Germany did a song Don’t Hate Me – so everyone did, three points.

Good to see Iceland and Ukraine high up there too. Must be hard for Iceland who seemed like they would have done even better last year. I am totally baffled by the popularity of Switzerland. France, not entirely my thing, but I can see the appeal. But the Swiss song was utter shite.

I’m guessing he has a significant percentage of the continent’s population rigged to explode or something

That’s that anyway. This has been as fun as ever and it was a good Eurovision that could have only conceivably been improved if Madonna had appeared dressed as a space pirate.

France have yet to get the message that nobody else in the world likes chanteuse any more.

I would just like to say that this one got my vote :yahoo:

Yes, but your taste in Eurovision songs is notoriously shit

I have now read the entire thread and I now realise I understand you guys even less than I thought I did. The two best songs were France and Switzerland, while Iceland was irredeemably awful in every respect. Were you all watching a different contest?

  • #64383

So Switzerland got to you too, eh?

I love coming to work and reading this thread. Always good for laughs and sometimes I just like taking some posts out of context imagine them said to a random stranger.

Eurovision has banned Russia from this year’s contest.

It does seem somewhat inconsequential and futile in the face of things currently happening but I do genuinely thing that, long term, this kind of cultural boycott en masse would help drive discontent in Russia and push for change.

I think discontent is Russia is already pretty high. Every Russian I personally know (admittedly that isn’t too many) says that they and everybody they know opposes the current events.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to change an armed dictatorship. Yes, they actually did manage it 30 years ago, but look where that got them…

  • #86463

30 years ago they had a leader who wanted to end that type of government. Sadly, they now have someone who wants a return of the Iron Curtain, not Glasnost.

  • #86467

Oh, for all that he did end it, Gorbachev wasn’t intending to.  Glasnost was to make the soviet system more open, while perestroika was to restructure it.  Of course, it didn’t work out like that.

Eurovision has banned Russia from this year’s contest.

But is that really a punishment?

Wouldn’t it be more punitive to make them do more songs, which would open them up to more mockery?

I think we saw it with South Africa. It was not all by any means but nobody there will deny the cultural boycott accelerated change. A sports mad country that could no longer compete at rugby and cricket was a big deal, that artists stopped playing Sun City too.

With countries like Iran or North Korea that kind of thing is less effective as the cultural links weren’t well established but Russians have had 30 years of being used to that exchange.
