Yeeeah, he hasn’t seen the Snyder movies, has he? xD

    Or read Action Comics #775.

Probably hasn’t even seen the animated adaptation.

“Much like ‘Mork & Mindy’ spun-off from ‘Happy Days’—which is an insane and true fact—our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own,” Kripke said. “It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes. Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, ‘Baywatch Nights’ spun-off from ‘Baywatch,’ and it had vampires. Vampires!”

Heh. Yeah, okay, he’s good at selling this spin-off, I’ll give him that.

So, basically we will go from watching the Moon Knight installments on Wednesday and The Boys starting June 3…

I watched all the episodes of The Boys Presents: Diabolical.

I enjoyed them all but John and Sun-Hee was my favorite. It had the typical violence you would expect from The Boys. Where it differs is that it isn’t funny. It’s serious and tragic. Most surprisingly, it’s written by Andy Samberg. Yes, “Dick in a Box” Andy Samberg. It had a lot of heart.

Yeah, I was also surprised by how loving and tender that episode was.

Overall, the Diabolical shorts were a lot of fun. They were better than I would’ve expected, really.

The Awquafina ep was also amongst my favourites. Nice mixture of cute and gross.

Also, are we still btiching about Snyder’s color palettes after a 100 MCU movies with the same uglyass mud gray filter plastered all over them?

It’s even funnier when you remember this.

Yes… Snyder came up with the whole JLA being 7 members… everyone knows that… fuckin’ Ennis got into his time machine and totally created the Boys as a spoof on Snyder movies… you’re right.

Why is there no rolleyes emoji?

I didn’t say any of that, I just recalled that the JLA were literally referred to as “the seven” in early marketing for Justice League. I didn’t expect this to be such a sore point.

You are taking this all too seriously.

A parody of something doesn’t necessarily mean a criticism. Mad Magazine lampooned all my favourite movies ever. Nicholas Cage parodies Adam West Batman in Kick Ass and I think both are great.

Whether Marvel or DC movies are better or not this pastiche is clearly of Justice League, the characters are direct analogues of DC characters, I personally don’t have any great issue with Snyder’s colour palette, it’s just a stylistic choice but it’s one that looks almost exactly like the one in The Boys fake trailer.

4 users thanked author for this post.
  • #92879

Well, like I already said there’s a lot of MCU in it as well, specifically Avengers… I mean, the spoof begins with a “Marvel Studios” style “Vought Studios” logo, can’t get more obvious than that… it’s clearly meant to spoof SH movies in general, not just Snyder’s movies… But hey man, we all see what we want to see… you wanna see only Snyder? sure, whatever floats your boat I guess

A parody of something doesn’t necessarily mean a criticism.

I’m not mad at the criticism, that’s what the show does and it does it well… what’s tiring is getting told I’m wrong all the time like I’m crazy and I’m seeing things or something, but again, what I said above.

I heard a British interview with Urban today and they mentioned (not disparagingly at all) that Butcher has a Cockney accent and he pretty much came out an apologised that it wasn’t very good. He said the original dialect coach he was given was Canadian and he later took on a British one who did the Lord of the Rings movies.

I’m curious now to see if Season 3 Butcher has a more convincing one than when he started.

Watched the three episodes of the new season that have so far been made available.

I enjoyed it, and – like the last season – I think some of the best stuff is in the parts around the cynical manipulation of public perceptions of the characters, which these first three episodes play with nicely.

(There’s a bit of clunky plotting in a couple of places to re-establish the basic status quo of the series, but it works fine for what it needs to do.)

I’m interested to see how it all plays out, but at this point I do feel like they probably can’t get away with keeping all the big players in place for too long without it getting stale – so I’m expecting some kind of meaningful change this season.

I’ve seen 1 ep. trying to spread it up so it does not go by too quickly. Favorite parts were Termite(the less said the better B-) ), Homie running into Deep at TV studio, and American Hero. The interesting thing about American Hero is that there is a very similar story in one of the Wild Card novels. The novel’s name was Inside straight and it even had a character named Drummer Boy in it.  I’m interested where the Supersonic story goes(no need for spoilers about it).

  • #93794

Lots of fun again this week, but among all the plot machinations and gore I think my favourite part was the A-Train ad campaign. This show nails the way these well-meaning ideas are inevitably incorporated and co-opted by the media/corporate machine, better than most out-and-out satires.

  • #94245

I can’t see them killing off Homelander, especially with a fourth series confirmed.  A depowered, snarling political thug? Could see them doing that, while having him trying to regain his powers.

Alternatively, Soldier Boy’s abilities have less effect on Homelander setting up the arc for the next series as to why that is.

Yeah exactly. I think a depowered Homelander is a lot more interesting than just killing him off, and it feels like this is where they’re heading.

As much as I love his performance, there’s a risk that Homelander becomes a bit stale and repetitive and this would help shake things up a bit.

  • #94251

The level of depravity and power Homelander has now can’t really be topped unless he becomes President or something, and you have to eventually have him get his final comeuppance. It’s part of why I kinda suspected the show was planned for three series when Amazon announced the double renewal, so the writers could plan out a rise and fall arc ahead of time.

I don’t know, I could easily see Homelander triumphant this season and the next taking place in a truly dystopian world that’s now completely ruled by ruthless supes, without any checks and balances. But then, who knows what this fucking show will do?

I’m enjoying this season immensely. Everything about this show just works so well. Writing is sharp as ever, and Urban and Starr are both just such a joy to watch.

Uh, as for recent developments, man, I thought Annie’s ex would betray her, poor bastard. And poor Maeve, of course.

staying within the show for now, say SB kills Homie. Then what do they do with an overpowered Russian Guinea Pig from the 50s? Homie is still a good spokesman for Vought. The few media experiences we have seen from SB have not been good publicity. What do you think happens next?

    .

answered question Soldier Boy is a bigger mess than Homelander.  Starlight leads the Seven against him. A train has a heart attack.  Deep gets turned into a human starfish while looking at his phone waiting for his wife to tell him what to do. Maeve does nothing because she is being held captive by Home and Noir. SB takes out Noir because he knows Noir’s style from payback days. SB’s light is stronger than Starlight’s and he obliterates her. Hughie goes nuts, TPs inside SB, killing SB, Hughie gets radiation poisoning and put in a hospital. He also becomes the biggest meme in the world with his glowing blood encrusted penis waving in the wind. Not going to bother because everything I come up with is going to be too tame for Kripke. :mail:

  • #94635

Kind of a weird episode this week. It moved things forward faster than I expected in terms of the Soldier Boy/Homelander clash, but then it all felt kind of pointless and water-treading in the end given the way the fight played out. Part of me wonders whether they should have kept their powder dry a while longer.

And the much-trailed Herogasm stuff ended up feeling weirdly insignificant and tacked on.

Still, the Frenchie storyline is as well-played as ever (that pair are really the heart of the show) and the final development with Starlight should make for some interesting fallout.

Yeah, it feels like they’re doing some things they can’t easily take back and paying off quite a bit of stuff that’s been there from the beginning.

I think like we’ve said before, the series probably will change quite a bit for season 4 (and probably needs to).

  • #94676

They could pivot it from Homelander to Butcher.  Kill off Homelander, Butcher goes after every other Supe and has to be stopped by his team.

Bill the Butcher and his mouth…
Urban is better at this than being McCoy in Star Trek imho.

These show runners wouldn’t be that bad if they redid Robocop.

I see some Verhoeven in all this:
The businessman looking at the city at night from his corporate office.
The corporate politics. The corporation is King.
The retro pop culture flashbacks, and especially all the social satire.

Not to mention that Verhoeven also loved over the top violence.

Yeah, it’s not a bad comparison.

“Herogasm” – episode six – was another great episode. Lots and lots of stuff happening, lots of fruit being borne. Loved the bit with Homelander talking to himself – Starr is so incredibly watchable. A-Train had a surprisingly complete journey in the end there. The big fight was fun. The Kimiko fight, on the other hand, was horrifying. Annie and Hughie came to the point where we knew they were headed all season. And the cliffhanger was pretty good, too.

Media literacy is in the toilet these days, and a lot of people primarily see power and strength rather than how they’re wielded as a virtue. So they’re attracted to Homelander because he’s the most powerful character in the show and they identify with that primarily rather than his actions. I think to some degree that’s cultivated in the US where they see their massive military force as a virtue, please don’t pay attention to their actions in Central and South America, let alone the Middle East.

The article raises a good point as well in that they’re expecting Homelander to have a redemption arc – so they can feel good about backing him all along when it turns out he’s good deep down inside

Love how many people are looking at Homelander as an unredeemable villain, when Butcher is an unredeemable hero. I do get the feeling that after Homelander is defeated they are going to do the comic’s last arc in some degree to hammer that point home

This article amused me with its take on that possibility:

Yet, the showrunners consistently write Butcher to be likeable, undercutting his more sinister attributes. Combined with Urban’s performance, unless season 3 has Butcher do something so drastic, it’s impossible for him to redeem himself, the series could wind up frustrating its audience.

Just as Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen became the last-minute villain of season 8, Butcher could feel just as undercooked as the final antagonist of The Boys.

I feel like there are some parallels there, but not for the same reasons. In both cases I feel like the seeds have been sown very early on for the character to shift from a sympathetic protagonist into someone corrupted by power and whose sense of morality is mostly dictated by self-interest.

(I wonder if we’ll get similar articles in future about The Boys making a “last minute” change in characterisation.)

Game of Thrones had a bunch of foreshadowing of Danerys being a tyrant, it’s just that – well, remember how I was saying that media literacy is dogshit now? A lot of people saw stuff like Dani burning Mirri Maz Dur alive or crucifying the slave owners as righteous because they agreed with her motives without noticing that her methods were fewer than ideal, and then decided her change at the end was unprecedented without realising that the only thing that’s changed is her motives, and only slightly.

The same way in The Boys we’re meant to empathise with Butcher because he’s up against Vought and Homelander, and is very much a victim of their machinations – his motives are sympathetic while his actions often aren’t. the show does a better job of calling this out than Game of Thrones ever did though.

It’s just occurred to me that all the Soldier Boy vs Homelander stuff could be an elaborate feint and misdirect. They’ve showed us so little of Homelander’s own son this season that I wonder if they’re banking on us forgetting him, having Homelander get a surprise win over Soldier Boy in the finale, but then bringing Homelander’s son in to finish him off.

Butcher is absolutely a delight to watch just like Homelander… both are horrible pieces of shit, and have been so since the very begining, so I don’t see many people being too upset by it. Anyways, people overracted to GOT’s last season, so that really shouldn’t be used as an example.

  • #95346

I’ve seen some interesting speculation in the last few days that after the Soldier Boy twist they could also be set to reveal that Stormfront was Homelander’s mother. Not sure it would work for me – it feels like a twist too far – but I guess it would play into the oedipal aspects of the character.

Now we all know some curse words in American Sign Language.

Some deaths but like comic book runs, always the essential characters aren’t completely out of it.

I actually thought that was a slightly limp finale. It felt like there wasn’t enough resolution to anything and everyone was kept around so that they could be taken forward into season 4, when some sort of definite ending for some of the characters might have been desirable.

I wonder how much this season and it’s ending were reworked once the show got renewed into season 4.

Not surprised they wrote off Noir and Maeve… they never really did anything with them, which is a bit of a shame, but eh, it was always the Butcher/Homelander show. Kind of a bummer we won’t see Ackles anymore, he’s always a nice presence.

It was a decent episode with a decent shodown, but in general it doesn’t feel like this season pushed the plot further too much, when you think about it… but hey, it’s still one of the best shows out there, so not complaining… but they should probably wrap it up next season.

  • #95664

I assume they’ve left the door open for his return at some point.

Of course, before he was hidden in a place few people knew about but now enough people are aware for him to come back. But it is good for him to be off the board for a bit. I know they are done by the same person but The Boys are not Supernatural and Soldier Boy is not Dean. Go Away all you SPN fans. you’ve got reruns and rumors about the new show. This show is Starr v Urban. no need to bring in a psychopath who actually gets shit done like Ackles.

Homelander v Butcher with a little Hughie bashing tossed in.

I am a little disappointed in The Boys writers. I would have loved to have them fuck over Soldier Boy so hard you could hear Deanites screaming their little heads off all around the world.

It is interesting that, during the fight, Butcher does perhaps his first rebellion against everything he was taught in protecting Ryan.  Meanwhile Soldier Boy and Homelander replicate their own experiences on their kids, inflicting more damage in the process.

How this plays out in S4 I’m not sure but I think it may go quite differently to the comics.

  • #97321

Looks like they’re doing not just him, but a new generation of teen superheroes probably being awful… yeah, this’ll be interesting.

That last scene with Ryan’s tiny smile while people are cheering for Homelander melting someone’s head is heartbreaking. I mean, if Ryan actually turns into just another bad supe and Homelander has to go for him… that’s his last shred of humanity gone then.

Watching Gen V, on episode two.

So are The Boys back? To invoke the John Wick line: Yeah, they’re fucking back.

The sharp satire of politics, media, business all filtered through superpowers is as great as ever.

Yeah, I’m really enjoying it so far as well (I’ve just started episode 3), and I love their commitment to showing male nudity.

yea, he has some real inadequacy issues asking her to do that. I’m loving it so far. Emma’s my favorite. Ep 3 really shined a light on her.

I’m really enjoying Gen V as well. Great writing and great performances.

I like that while it does have humor, it is a bit more serious than The Boys. It makes for nice contrast.

Given the prohibitions on displaying genitals in Japanese media, I can’t wait to see what they do with Emma’s sex scene in Gen V episode 1
