McDormand winning was probably deserved
The second woman to win three best actress Oscars, after Kathryn Hepburn – I was sure Meryl was up there but she’s more queen of the nominations.

WandaVision got 23 nominations, in the mini-series category. https://www.emmys.com/awards/nominations/award-search?search_api_views_fulltext=&submit=Search&field_celebrity_details_field_display_name=&field_show_details_field_nominee_show_nr_title=wandavision&field_nominations_year_op=%3E%3D&field_nominations_year%5Bvalue%5D=1949-01-01&field_nominations_year_1_op=%3C%3D&field_nominations_year_1%5Bvalue%5D=2021-01-01
Don Cheadle?
Somewhere inside his high-tech armor, War Machine is shrugging.
Don Cheadle echoed many an awards-show aficionado on Tuesday by puzzling over his Primetime Emmy Award nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama category, for a 95-second scene in the first episode of Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (where he reprised his MCU role as Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes).
In Cheadle’s scene opposite Falcon and Winter Soldier co-lead Anthony Mackie, Rhodey shared his own POV on Sam Wilson aka The Falcon declining the opportunity to take on the Captain American mantle.
“thanks, well wishers. sorry, haters. agreed, [shruggers],” Cheadle commented on Twitter. “i don’t really get it either. buuuuuuuuuut on we go…”
Cheadle — who now has 10 Emmy nods across his career (plus one Academy Award nomination) — will vie for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama with The Crown‘s Charles Dance, The Mandalorian‘s Timothy Olyphant and Carl Weathers, and Lovecraft Country‘s Courtney B. Vance.
Falcon and Winter Soldier‘s only other Emmy nomination came in the Outstanding Stunt Performance category.
thanks, well wishers. sorry, haters. agreed, 🤷🏿♂️ers. i don't really get it either. buuuuuuuuuut on we go …
— Don" 't ask me google questions" Cheadle (@DonCheadle) July 13, 2021
WandaVision getting all the noms is deserved. I’m glad Don Cheadle’s as bemused as the rest of us about his nom though.
Bowen Yang for SNL is a pleasant surprise. Hope that helps him get bumped up to the main cast. I’ve been half-expecting him to get dropped and the aggressively mediocre Andrew Dismukes to leapfrog him.
But why is Wandavision a “limited series” and F&WS isn’t? Or the Mandalorian for that matter… I dunno… it’s weird.
But why is Wandavision a “limited series” and F&WS isn’t?
So they don’t have to compete against each other, I suppose?
Non-cynically, it could be that F&WS is planned as an ongoing thing with more seasons to come, and WV wasn’t. I don’t know if that’s the case, but it’d make sense for those series.
These definitions rarely seem to make sense. It’s similar to the actor and supporting actor one. Like Anthony Hopkins was on screen in Silence of the Lambs for less than 20 minutes but was deemed a lead and not supporting.
Don Cheadle Shrugs at His Emmy Nod for 95-Second Falcon and Winter Soldier Scene: ‘I Don’t Really Get It Either’
Yeah, that’s really, really dumb.
I like the honesty of his reaction. Must be weird for a guy like Don Cheadle to be nominated for this. I mean, he has delivered such a lot of great work, and he rightfully was nominated for House of Lies (but didn’t win). This feels like one of those, Hey Shouldn’t This Guy Have Won an Emmy Ages Ago? kind of nomination.
Unstructured Reality Program sounds like a fitting category for Wandavision.
Unstructured Reality Program sounds like a fitting category for Wandavision.
But why is Wandavision a “limited series” and F&WS isn’t? Or the Mandalorian for that matter… I dunno… it’s weird.
Not sure about F&WS but The Mandalorian is definitely a continuing series, having had 2 seasons with a third in production. Disney has also made it clear that there are no plans for more Wandavision. Not sure if they made it as clear for F&WS. Although the Cheadle nomination is absurd.
Glad to see shows like Ted Lasso and Pen15 get recognition. I also think it’s hilarious that HBO cancelled Lovecraft country right before these noms came out.
Not sure why the Emmy’s doubled down on Emily in Paris after the backlash the Golden Globes received, but okay.
That said, I do with the Emmy’s weren’t so myopic in their nominations. Basically every actor from The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale and Ted Lasso were nominated. There’s so much content out there that it seems ridiculous to basically just have all the acting categories dominated by 3 or 4 shows. Just create a best ensemble award already.
Evan Peters, Mare of Easttown
[fake affront] Hey! how come he got a nom for this and not for Wandavision [/fake]
Following the TV Academy and The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ recent joint decision to spin off children’s and family programming into its own standalone ceremony, the two branches have extended their cooperation as they continue to try to update rules originally written decades years ago in order to reflect how people’s viewing habits have evolved.
Moving forward, the competitions will be organized solely by content genre as opposed to the current method, which separates programs based on program airtime. The changes, which will be included in the Call For Entries put out in January, will result in digital daytime dramas as well as other daytime programs, including some talk shows and game shows, potentially moving to the Primetime Emmy Awards.
Criteria such as how a show is filmed (on sound stage or on location, using one or multiple cameras) and how frequently it airs (daily or weekly) would determine whether a program stays in the Daytime Emmy race or switches to the Primetime one. (Despite the fact that a large portion of the TV content is consumed time-shifted on-demand, the two competitions will keep their Primetime/Daytime monikers for legacy reasons.)
Here are some of the changes by genre:
Daytime Dramas:
Daytime Drama categories will remain in the Daytime competition and be redefined as “any multi-camera, weekday daily serial, spinoff or reboot.” Programs for ages 15 and under will be represented in the recently announced Children’s & Family competition.
The other daytime scripted dramas, most notably streaming/digital series like The Bay, previously awarded in the Daytime Limited Drama categories, will transition to the Primetime competition. A series like Days Of Our Lives: Beyond Salem, which streams on Peacock and would’ve moved to the Primetime Emmys will instead be eligible for the Daytime Drama series field at the Daytime awards alongside the mothership Days Of Our Lives soap.
Talk Shows:
Talk shows will be separated by format and style characteristics between the Daytime and Primetime Emmys. Most current daytime talk shows will remain in the Daytime Emmy competition based on them featuring interaction with the audience, including giveaways, as well as segments from other daytime genres, including crafting and cooking. Meanwhile, a daytime talker like The Ellen DeGeneres Show, now in its final season, could relocate to the Primetime Emmys as it resemble late-night talk show with a monologue, celebrity interviews and virtually no traditional daytime segments like cooking.
The Morning Show and Spanish-Language Morning Show categories will leave the Daytime competition; they will be eligible in the NATAS-administered News & Documentary Emmys or the Daytime competition’s Talk Show categories, depending on show format. While the news-heavy first two hours of NBC’s Today have competed in the Morning Show category, Today with Hoda & Jenna had been running in the Talk Show Informative Daytime Emmy field. Going forward, morning shows, will be part of the News & Documentary Emmys if they tend to be more news-driven, and of the informative talk show category at the Daytime Emmys if they skew more toward entertainment.
Game Shows:
Game shows and Instructional & DIY programming categories will remain divided by airtime for the 2022 competitions, while the Academies look to a genre-based alignment for the 2023 competition year. Because daytime and primetime game shows are very similar, the organizations may look at frequency of airing (daily vs. weekly) and regular run vs. limited event like Jeopardy Tournament of Champions to make the distinction.
“NATAS and the Television Academy each pride ourselves on celebrating and honoring the best television has to offer, and with the evolution of our industry, it was critical to update our competitions to meet current trends in both content and viewing habits,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO, NATAS. “These changes will allow each Academy to honor an undivided scope of achievement in our respective fields of television excellence.”
Honestly, this sounds like a confusing mess.

A lot of very good nominations.
My ranking of the Best Picture noms:
At least Don’t Look Up is miles better than McKay’s last movie, Vice.
Twitter and other feeds had all this outrage of snubs like
not having Lady Gaga for her work in that Gucci movie.
Then again, when the movie came out, there was talk about
her accent in the movie.
Nonetheless, I give Gaga credit for putting herself out there,
winning a few years back for her song, and being a survivor.
I read what she went through in the past…
Not that I care about the Brit awards, but yesterday’s awards were interesting. For the first time they had non-gendered categories, i.e. not “Best Female Artist” and “Best Male Artist” but “Best artist, period”. The change was made after complaints by a non-binary singer who was not eligible for any gendered category.
And female acts won 10 out of 15 awards (I assume non-binary artists didn’t win any, but there probably aren’t so many of those to choose from).
It’s interesting, and I approve of the approach. Unlike sports where there are clear structural differences between male and female athletes which affect their performance, all singers can be directly compared regardless of their gender. And unlike sports, there is no objective “best” in music, it’s simply a popularity contest, and gender should be irrelevant to the outcome of that.
I agree it makes sense and we have reached the level the split isn’t needed. Female representation has moved on a lot from the 1970s and 80s. If you think of big selling artists right now more women come to mind than men.
I notice to ‘make up’ the number of awards, because they’ve halved some of them by not splitting genders, they’ve put a few more genre based ones in there. No prog rock section though David, time to start a petition.
To be fair, the awards ceremony wouldn’t be long enough to read out the title of the winning track, let alone play it.

Oscars: Full List of Nominations – The Hollywood Reporter
Oppenheimer’ leads the noms with a total of 13 noms, followed by ‘Poor Things’ with 11, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ with 10 and ‘Barbie’ with eight. They will compete for best picture with ‘American Fiction,’ ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ ‘The Holdovers,’ ‘Maestro,’ ‘Past Lives’ and ‘The Zone of Interest.’
Haven’t seen American Fiction yet (out here weekend after next), but that’s as good a Best Picture line-up I can recall. Maestro is the weakest movie there, and even that’s pretty good.

Little rough seeing Scorsese’s movie get shut out like that.
That was his third movie to go 0-10.
Tbh, he should have won his first way back in ’76. Never won
for his best movies. Oh well, should have been nicer about the MCU 🤣
