Apparently there’s an Usagi Yojimbo show coming to Netflix.

  • #32875

    Sort of?

‘Usagi Yojimbo’ Animated Series Ordered at Netflix, James Wan to Executive Produce

Netflix is teaming with Gaumont on a CGI animated series titled “Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles,” which is based on the 35-year-old comic book series by Stan Sakai.

Rather than centering around the comic books’ protagonist Miyamoto Usagi, the series will take place in the far future and follow the teenage Rabbit Samurai Yuichi, descendent of the aforementioned great warrior, on his epic quest to become a true samurai. Yuichi will lead a ragtag team of misfit heroes – including a roguish bounty hunter, a cunning ninja, an acrobatic pickpocket and a faithful pet lizard – as he battles depth-charging moles, metal-tipped winged bats, and monsters from another dimension, all in the pursuit to become the best samurai Usagi.

  • #32883

Wait, how did Usagi Yojimbo end up in TMNT anyways? That’s where I saw him fisrt…

  • #32885

There had been crossovers in the original comics.

  • #32958

Yeah, Sakai became friends with Eastman and/or Laird early on so they did cross-overs. Mirage published Usagi for a little while in the 90s too.

That TV series sounds dreadful though. It sounds like the kind of premise a hip young network executive would have forced on someone whose work they were adapting without having read in the 1990s. Why not just do Usagi?

  • #32987

It does sound terrible but I know not long back Sakai was struggling with his wife dying and her treatment building up medical costs so he had to use up savings, so I’ll be happy not to watch as long as he gets a big fat TV cheque.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy for Sakai to (finally) get that big media payday, but I just wish it was something that sounded like it was using the full potential of Usagi.

    New series of Taskmaster announced:

Contestants are Daisy May Cooper, Johnny Vegas, Katherine Parkinson, Richard Herring and Mawaan Rizwan.

It’s hard to know who’s going to turn out to be the useless one of the group (ala David Baddiel, who I’m genuinely concerned can’t function in normal society) but I’m going to put money on it being Richard Herring, to everyone’s surprise.

Just went to put MTV Rocks on, which I admittedly don’t do that often, to find that it’s been shut down, along with a couple of other MTV stations (Club and OMG). It means MTV UK is down to just the main channel (whic doesn’t play music), MTV Music, Hits, Base and Classic. Which kinda sucks. My habit of putting on MTV Rocks for background noise was largely broken when they kept ditching it for three months of the year to be VH1 Christmas, so I don’t know what they expected in terms of long term ratings.

Anyway, in looking up the reasoning behind all that, I also happened upon this:

Disney to close all kids TV channels in the UK in October

A bit of a surprise, even with the launch of Disney+, as the Disney Channel, of various sorts, has been a staple for decades. Admittedly, the only thing I watch on them is DuckTales, which they show so late and irregularly that I just resort to *cough* other means. Both of these moves signal the tangible start of a big sea change for Sky and cable/satellite in general, I think.

  • #34591

It’s hard for the MTV concept now I imagine since Youtube and Spotify will deliver music to your tastes. Economies have meant music videos have been cheap and not very inspiring for 20 years.

I absorbed music television between around 1986 an 1992. I absolutely kill on pub quiz on any music question of that era but I haven’t seen any need to watch it since. I mean MTV knew this 15 years back when they turned the main channel over to reality TV.

Coming back to the first post ever in this thread…

Look who’s back: Spitting Image returns for our chaotic times

This could be interesting. I used to like Spitting Image a lot, and it’s a format that is pretty timeless (there’s a French counterpart that ran for years after SI, not sure if it’s still going).

But this is not the first time they’ve talked about resurrecting it. I hope it works out – if nothing else, those new puppet designs look pretty good.

But as ever, it’s the quality of the material that will make or break it. They had some very good writers and some decent impressionists on the original series (including some people who went on to become big names) – I wonder who will serve that function this time? The mention in the article of US writers suggests the feel of the show could end up being quite different.

    Some of the new designs:

Pretty good I think, and very much in the classic mould, but it’s really the material that is going to determine whether this is any good or not.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #35013

    The Cummings puppet is great.

Yup the quality of the scripts is key but I do also think Spitting Image departed at the height of the Blairite spin doctor approach. Everyone media managed and well dressed enough to be pretty boring (apart from John Prescott).

We can’t deny the ‘characters’ are back in force in politics now.

As long as there have been men, there have been monsters. Lovecraft Country lands in a specific time and place for both, but in a way that feels universal as much as it feels scary. It’s one of the best shows HBO has made in a long, long time.

‘The Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Series From Diablo Cody, Heather Regnier & Berlanti Prods. In Works At the CW

Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti is ushering in a new group of superheroes at the CW.

The network has put in development The Powerpuff Girls, a live-action series based on the original Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken. The project, featuring adult versions of the three kindergarten-aged girls from the classic animated series, hails from Diablo Cody (Juno, United States of Tara), Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars), Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions.

The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

Cody and Regnier are writing the script. Regnier is executive producing alongside Cody via Vita Vera Films and Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Warner Bros. Television, a Cartoon Network sibling within the WarnerMedia umbrella, is the studio.

Created by McCracken, the original animated superhero series The Powerpuff Girls aired on Cartoon Network for six seasons from 1998-2005. It centered on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers who all lived in the fictional city of Townsville, USA with their father and creator, a scientist named Professor Utonium. They were frequently called upon by the city’s mayor to help fight nearby criminals and other enemies using their powers.

A reboot of the original series, starring Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li and Natalie Palamides, premiered on Cartoon Network in 2016. The most recent third season wrapped on June 16, 2019.

Hulu landed exclusive streaming VOD rights to the franchise in 2016, an agreement that included the Emmy-nominated reboot series and the full classic library episodes.

Cody previously collaborated with Berlqanti Prods. on Raised by Wolves, a single-camera comedy adaptation of the UK comedy series, which went to pilot at ABC.

what needs to change about police shows

I think the main thing that needs to change about police shows is that we (the entire viewing audience) need to accept them for what they are, which is fantasy shows, not realistic dramas. Not that I want to the revive the whole “way of the Western” thing from the previous boards, but the Western didn’t really die, it just turned in its stetson for a police badge. The same white-washed, conservative, blinkered view of the country that TV westerns of the 50s had simply survived in cop shows, changing from an unrealistic and idealised view of how America was to an unrealistic and idealised view of how America is.

Yeah, this. I can’t imagine how they could possibly introduce the reality of the modern police force into a show like Brooklyn 99 without making it unwatchable.

I was reminded of The West Wing the other day (I think they’re doing a show getting the cast back together or something) and it made me realise that even the most critically acclaimed TV shows are nothing but pure fantasy.

Maybe they should just come up with another idea… they’ve been doing cop shows non-stop for about 20+ years now =/

Maybe they could shift the focus from the cops to the forensics teams that investigate the crime scenes, there could be a series in that I reckon.

That’s just crazy talk! No one would watch it!

And on a completely different, unrelated matter: ‘CSI’ Revival Series Still in the Works, and Two Key Stars Are in Talks to Return

So…ummm…It turns out there are two movies called The Lost City of Gold.

I’d need some further clarification as to which version you guys watched (Ewwww David). This is a family board. I’m not familiar enough with Dora, cartoony version or otherwise, to ascertain which is which. This one didn’t give her name. Her boots are certainly made for exploring…something.

I honestly do not know what this means but this other movie intrigues me.

No it does NOT! (Viewer, I turned it off after way less than 20 mins).

I very innocently and innocuously went exploring along the Amazon algorithm (Bloody Dora!)

I was going to reply, but that would require me to have the faintest idea what you’re all talking about, which I don’t

‘Altered Carbon’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

Eh, not a huge disappointment for me. I still haven’t even finished season 2. It just didn’t really feel like it was doing anything particularly exciting after that first season.

Interesting that for The Boys season 2 Amazon are dropping 3 episodes and then dripping the rest weekly. I have never been convinced that just because it can be done that a full series drop is the best way to present TV. On this forum it had led basically to reduced conversation about a show.
