It’s neither really Sean. I paid upfront for a year for the basic level domain and shared hosting as that’s the best value. That has been covered now by the subs and donations and for the toolbox and template upgrades. The rest I am leaving in the account and when it comes time to renew again in September will use that to see what better package can be afforded. I know it remains functional but a bit slow.

As to those that didn’t stay too long in the new iteration. I did all my testing on my PC and underestimated really how many accessed using their phones, where the experience was quite poor. I think people were a bit too polite to want to point that out and instead just drifted off. Some probably just moved on as their interests changed which has always happened.

Something updated tonight. Not sure if it was locally or on the site but all the fonts are looking crisper than ever on my PC. I use an oversize and old monitor and have zoomed out my browser to 80% when viewing this site. And, as I said, everything is looking unusually crisp and clear! Good stuff!

I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank Gar and the mods for keeping it running. I’ll contribute with some currency as soon as I have my affairs in order.

(I hope my bad slashfic joke didn’t anger anyone.)

  • #30100

There was an update to the forum template just released yesterday. It looks the same to me to be honest but maybe it fixed stuff for particular devices or configs and that’s why yours looks better now.

Speaking of donations. I’m coming up to renewal of the hosting contract at the end of August. I’m planning to move to a faster plan but all the companies are only giving their best deals for 3 years and we’re a bit short. This is not make or break as I can renew for a year but it would be cool to secure 3 years. We’d need about $150.

I’ll leave it up to you guys if you want to send anything to the Paypal donate link on the homepage and see if we can make it.

I’ll be able to squeeze at least a 20-30 bucks out of my budget by late july, safer to say early august. If I have a job it’ll be more.

It’s ok Anders, I never want to put any pressure for people to contribute because we all have different circumstances. Some are millionaires like Jerry and others have more challenging finances. Just put in what you feel, if you can afford it.

No worries, Gareth. The only pressure I feel comes from myself. I owe you guys a lot for this place, for the love and support I got through my rough patches, and for all the laughter and joy being a part of this community has given me. It’s priceless. Really.

    Money is just money.

Ok that button looks a little dangerous. I’d never used it and I did a test with Mark Peyton’s account (only because he hasn’t posted in many many months, I like Mark) to see how to switch it off and I have no idea. Not only that but it’s hidden from view the entire ‘Introduce Yourself’ thread because he started it.

I can’t even find which plugin it came with to switch it off. I’ll keep trying to work it out but in the meantime don’t select it!

Is there anything that can be done about port scanning bastards?

Had it happen elsewhere on bigger, more corporate forums where it’d be easier to hide but this is a smaller corner of the internet.

I suspect not and Bullguard stops just about everything but was curious.

  • #30395

I’ll be honest Ben, I don’t know what that means. The upgrade I am hoping for end of August (but may be doubtful at the moment due to lack of funds) has increased security options but I don’t really know what the dangers of port scanning are.

  • #30399

No worries, thanks for replying – I can’t tell you either Gar and I rate your tech skills ahead of mine.

Google is a bit mixed on it, sounds ominous but also looks like it might be done en masse and remotely so don’t think there’s much that can be done.  Just one of those things of being online so always have a firewall on.

Portscanning and portsniffing is, I might very well be mistaken, someone scanning all activity on a specific port to see what information is being sent through it. It’s mostly hunting for passwords and credit card numbers and stuff.

I think it works like this. Even if you’re on a website that encrypts shit for you, the act of you sending the information from your computer to the website is not necessarily encrypted. That’s what they’re sniffing. Since http uses specific ports per standard, they can easily be sniffed.

True story: We (me and a mate) used to do port sniffing at our local network in school in our science club. We weren’t after doing some heavy illegal shit but we were all about mischief. By sniffing a port on a local switch we managed to get a librarians username and password for the school network.

We didn’t use it for anything at all until the last week of school, when we logged her in on a computer (in the library to cover tracks) and saw that she had admin rights for most things. Now, we could’ve done a lot of real heavy mischief stuff, but instead of wreaking havoc all we did was editing the school monitors that were placed here and there and broadcasting news and information in text form to add this litte tidbit att the end:

“Now hiring: Competent network administrators! We’re desperate for change. Have you got what it takes? Apply NOW!”

The network admins went fucking berserk.

    FINE

  • #30571

Ha ha, actually I worded that badly anyway (typing late at night). The ideal upgrade I want is out of our reach now but we have funds enough to move to a tier with faster times and extra security stuff.

One other thing to point out to Patreon contributors. They are adding sales tax from this month, they say they already do so for Europe but are adding it for some US states (it’s all a little unclear where in the FAQ). So if it goes up by 5% or 8% or whatever your local sales tax is it’s not me changing the amount, it’s the taxman cometh.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #30572

I’ve sent you some money directly through Paypal (to https://www.paypal.me/carrierforum).

I’ve done that before too so I hope you received it.  The only options on Patreon seem to be for the $2 and $5 tiers so there is no option for just a voluntary contribution, like the one million dollars I just sent you from Jerry’s bank account.  Maybe something to consider?

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #30573

I got it, sincere thanks for your money and laundering Jerry’s offshore stash.

Yeah Patreon is designed only for recurring payments, you can just enter your own amount rather than $2 or $5 but it’ll take that out every month. If you are popular enough, like Amanda Palmer, some people use it as their monthly income.

So the Paypal button is for people that would rather give a one-off amount.

Can someone give me a crash course in spoiler tags?

I know there’s the square bracket thing bit is there a set number of characters or lines before you need to redo it? Can you have paragraph breaks?

  • #31138

    {spoiler}Darth Vader is Luke’s Father{/spoiler}

But with square brackets instead of wiggly ones.

    Paragraph breaks…

    …don’t work.

As the spoiler tag automatically closes itself at the end of the first paragraph.

And as far as I know the spoiler tag within a paragraph will run for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever until closed.

I’m seeing a Moderators Dungeon in the main forum list. Can’t access it but it’s definitely there.

I presume it’s something to do with a recent update (I noticed everyone mow has online / offline next to their usernames).

  • #32132

Yeah a lot of updates went through this morning. Looks like a couple of teething problems. The mod forum showing (although that’s not really a big deal when it can’t be read) and also the most recent poster doesn’t seem to be updating.

  • #32140

    OMG Bruce!

The stuff they’ve been brewing about you in the depths of the dungeon!

No worries: my lips are sealed lest I wind up beneath a mod meurtrière.

I mean, nothing to see here -move along – the main thing is I can still say goodly morning all.

Good morning, Gar. You’re my favourite Mr. Jones today. The best most recent poster. The very definition of Bestest personified (pleeease don’t Seán Bean me with the others amongst the Deep Ones. There lurk shadows and heebie jeebie scuddering crawling things. Eeep!).

  • #32143

    I fixed the ‘freshness’ bit.

  • #32145

I think you haven’t fully completed my Mod approval forms, Gar.

I can see that the Dungeon is there but I have tried to ban Bruce and can’t work out how to do it?

  • #32154

I haven’t fully completed my Tim approval form either. It requires better phrasing.

  • #32182

    You are pre-approved by Tim.

Okay, but honestly, still not able to ban Bruce.   Not able to ban anyone, which is a real imposition.

  • #32251

While I do assume that you have already surmised what the problem is and just haven’t gotten around to fixing it. Or have decided that the problem is fine and doesn’t need fixing. What I assume is: you’ve got this, Gar! But just in case you haven’t seen this, this is shown on the dashboard:

  • #32252

  • #32256

Yeah I’m aware, there’s no need to push that update yet as a few of the plugins we use aren’t tested on it.

  • #32257

Yeah I’m aware, there’s no need to push that update yet as a few of the plugins we use aren’t tested on it.

Could the problem then be that part of the new files got updated during the automated update?

  • #32261

No, it either updates or it doesn’t. The way it works is a lot of things build on each other. WordPress is the main engine, then BBPress provides the bare bones of a message board, then there are various plugins that add features like being able to log on, emojis, attachments, thanks, the template of the board which I added to make it work on mobile devices.

So a lot of the plugins I manually upgraded to the latest versions, one of them has overridden the setting that keeps the mod forum hidden from view. I can find out which by deactivating them one at a time but since it keeps the setting that only moderators can access then I may not be arsed.

Upgrading WordPress in 99% of cases would make no difference to the board functioning because it’s like the operating system on a PC and the program works independently. However like with an OS every now and again in rare cases there’s an incompatibility that stops something working, so I’ll hold off forcing the update until the owners of the plugins have tested it.

  • #32289

I posted pics on the image thread yesterday (15 hours ago?) right after Lorcan’s Chesire Cat one, but I couldn’t see my post. The main board did say I was the last one to post.

Same thing happened in the Space thread. Now I have a message that JRCarter has posted a reply, but I cant see that either.

In the Image thread I can see activity after that.

Dont know if this is a board problem or a me problem.

Edit: I can see this post, so it cant be all bad.
I guess those posts got lost, but still weird that I cant see the reply in the Space thread.

  • #32318

Gar, thought you should know- while of course it doesn’t allow me to see any threads, I can see that the Moderator’s Dungeon exists after the update. Based on other things, I assume you want it completely hidden from non-mods, so I thought you should know that I can see it, and I assume others can too.

  • #32321

It’s probably my fault. Even when I know things aren’t my fault they are.

    It’s not your fault.

    Jerry’s yachts are to blame.

  • #32322

I assume you want it completely hidden from non-mods

That was the plan but really I don’t care that much, the mod forum now we are a smaller group is barely used and when it is there’s more chit-chat than moderation discussion. I suppose there’s scope for paranoia if you see a new post marked and imagine it’s about ‘you’ but it probably won’t be.

Once the server upgrade is done I’ll make some attempt to get it back to how it was but not if it takes up a lot of time.

Still having problems with posting links.
I usually Highlight something and make that the link. doesn’t work.
tried just pasting a link in the post, but that doesn’t work for me either.

However, the board is letting me use URL’s for Images (through the IMG function), so that’s an improvement.

  • #32608

Lots of people are posting links and images successfully. So the best way I could look into it is if you or JR could tell me where the rejected links are for – could be there’s some filter that doesn’t like those sites.

  • #32614

Maybe it’s me, but the problems with the posts seem to have increased in the last month or so.

I’ve had a couple go “missing” this last week or so and today I’ve had some “posted” but then they don’t show.  I press “back” to repost it but it tells me it’s a duplicate post. And I show up as the last person to post in the thread but the posts not there!

Maybe this is like a cacheing thing with the board? I don’t know. It’s really weird.  It also only seems to happen on PC (not phone).

I suppose as one final grievance to air for the terribly underappreciated and yachtless Gar – the videos and post to youtube still suck on phone.  Any news on that front?

  • #32621

FWIW, it does seem to be at least partly link related.

The “Watching” thread has blackballed all my posts with a link in it in the last ten minutes, but happily accepted the non-linked posts.  I even amended the content of the linked posts so it wasn’t thinking they were spam duplicates.

  • #32633

As before, please tell me what’s being linked to so I can check is that’s the cause. It’s not with links per se because http://www.cnnn.com can go through.

  • #32640

Mr Jones! Mr Jones! What is the carriers official position on posts being filtered out if they contain the word xanax?

  • #32644

    Banned!

Actually there are no filters that have actually been set, however some stuff could flag with the anti-spam software.

As to the Youtube link you posted and Tim failed to. Could it just be not using the ‘text’ tab? Youtube and Twitter won’t embed if on the default ‘visual’ tab.

  • #32665

I literally just copy posted the link and pasted it – I only just realised there are two tabs to a post. I think I must always be using the visual one.

  • #32680

I think the heart of it is some complication between posting between pc and phone, using the visual tab (dominantly), crappy australian internet and probably just some other bugs lurking in the boards html code or whatever.

Its not really any issue (beyond an extremely minor annoyance), but I do feel it worth adding my voice to the small collection of other posters who have commented on these things.

  • #32689

It’s always worth adding a voice. I haven’t encountered your particular issue but I haven’t really posted many links. I’ve had a few posts vanish, most likely due to dodgy internet at times on my side, and it probably did everyone a favour.

Oh, there is one thing. How do I do the selective quote thing? Any time I’ve tried, it leaves out the poster’s name.

Also, thanks again, Gar for everything you do. Beyond appreciated.
