on the main page it says there are 2 new threads in the Comic forum but when I open the comic forum there are none. It is not a problem but I thought you might want to to know about the bug. If it is only happening on my screen, don’t worry about it because it is prolly not a problem on your end.

I constantly have one new ‘phantom’ thread showing in both the comics and movies forum.

As I said, given that Gar is the keymaster, I expect phantom things to pop up….

My theory (based on no evidence at all) is that it’s because there are pinned topics in those forums.

It’s not, it’s if people are editing or have deleted posts the ‘new’ plugin still counts them as they are in the database even if not displayed. So the icon will display until the trash is cleared and then it should sync back.

Most of what Jim posts is inappropriate but we get about 3 or 4 ‘fat finger’ reported posts a week. Don’t worry about it, none of them have been genuine so far and I just wipe them off when I can be arsed.

1] Is it possible that the front page has a bigger font? The fontsize inside a topic is good

2] And now I see a gazzillion “new” when not coming to the forum regularly, so perhaps that is also a thingie?

3] the blockquote-option is only an indent. Not a real ‘block’ is shown

4] Last: I use my wheelscroll to navigate, but on the forum (main overview of topics, but also inside a topic) it scrolls too much at once. 1.5 screen for me. Is that something on your end? I only have this issue on this forum here

I’ve restored it. I think the length of it drove the board to think it may be spam and it was put in that folder. Sorry I was asleep due to time zones or could have done it sooner.

I would say if anyone is going to write a really long post though it is probably best to draft if offline or copy and paste it before pressing submit. Even on the previous iterations of the board if you briefly lost internet connection you could sometimes lose the post. Happened to me a few times.

In the new LSH comic every character suffers from ADHD and can’t complete a full sentence before jumping to the next idea. Yes, lots of words, but very few of them connected to one another.

I think the temporary name change caused an issue. I have input everyone’s username in an ‘allow’ list and once Pip came into being I saw 6 of your posts go into the ‘spam’ section – including these ones.

So basically comedy name changes aren’t going to work so well on this board.

I was going to suggest keeping Pip and getting rid of Tim, but since it is his birthday, I’ll keep that suggestion to myself….for now.

Maybe some sort of compromise is required.

I’ve upgraded to a paid-for and supported plugin as I’ve saved up enough of the Patreon subs.

You’ll see some changes immediately to the ‘new’ and go to next read options. It’s also supposed to fix the line spacing thing but I haven’t worked out how yet.

The flags are  gone. The new version is a bit more elegant but as it is a new plugin it has no memory of what you viewed before so will start again, which is a bit of a pain but unavoidable.

Also, I still dont get any useful notifications. The blue circle next to the “howdy” at the top of the board only refers to posts folks have made in threads I’ve started but I get nothing about mentions or replays to my posts. I even tried setting up email notifications in my profile and I’m getting nowt.

That should be for everyone.  We’ve pinned the New Comics and Trades threads in the Comics forum and the Watching thread for the Movies forum as those tend to be the most used.

Ronnie is right on the pinned threads.

I’ll look into the notifications thing tomorrow, it is a feature in the new plugin but I haven’t had the chance to look at it yet.

@bruce can you try something out for me. At the top right of every forum is a little ‘subscribe’ link. Can you click on that and see if it starts sending you the notifications?

Done. I notice o got an email when you @-ed me there and it appeared under my notification list on my profile top.

It did but I have to confess I don’t really know what I’m doing with it, I shoved in a few tags hoping that would help.

I also realised the site isn’t GDPR compliant with no privacy policy so that may also be causing some issues there.

Is there a reason Youtube videos have stopped embedding?

I think I figured it out.  You have to remove the link formatting that gets automatically applied to get it to embed.

I’ll try and find a simpler solution but if you click the ‘text’ tab it shows the old reply options we had and that works too just with the URL copied.

I noticed that the maximum size for attachments is back down to 512K from 2MB. Will it be increased back?

Yeah I changed it back to 2 meg.

I do believe the paragraph spacing is now fixed.

The idea here is I currently get more in the Patreon subs than it costs to run the site. Not a huge amount more, around $30 or so, and as it builds up I can make certain improvements. This plugin for example cost me $60. I always knew it was there but needed a couple of months to get enough to pay.

When a little more builds up I’ll be looking to move the server to an SSD drive so the site responds a little faster.

After that I’m looking at an app that would make it work better on mobile devices but that company hasn’t given me a price yet.

So keep giving feedback on what improvements you’d like but be polite about it because it’s all being done on limited funds and time and easier ones like Discourse or Invision are way outside our budget for the level of traffic and storage we have.

These are the two biggies for me. The board is pretty slow and a pain in the ass to use on mobile. Out of interest how much cash is needed before you can implament these?

Yeah I don’t use mobile much because my job has always had me sat in front of a PC all day. I’ve used it a couple of times and it was okay, the previous repeated ‘new’ thing was the most annoying as it crowded the display when there were a lot which is why I wanted to get rid of it (and it didn’t always work that well). However murmurs have come that people who do primarily use mobile access have issues.

What I don’t want is people to stay away in silence because certain stuff doesn’t work for them (like the previous grey text that was removed). I’d rather people speak up but with the understanding it probably can be fixed but that I do this out of love and not money so it probably won’t happen on demand.

 

I use it on a tablet (Android) sometimes and it’s definitely slower and more clunky than on my laptop, though I’m not sure why it should be  — it’s not just a mobile connection speed issue, as I also see it when I’m in the house and using the same broadband and wifi as my laptop is. I can put up with it, but I’m sure it’s a pain for people who are mostly accessing it like that.

The board in general seems to work best on PC, but these new improvements go along way to making posting easier on mobile.

Autocorrect seems to work better for some reason.

Often my screen defaults the post writing window to slightly to the right so there’s a margin where I can’t see the first letters of every line.

I also deliberately disabled signatures by the way. I think that’s an idea that doesn’t really work with what we’re doing, with a relatively small group it’s just tedious reading the same line at the end of every post, which was usually a half-arsed joke.

They look good to me, but to be honest the formatting of the Carrier isn’t a bother to me on mobile, just the slight glitch of not being able to see the entire inout field while you’re typing (and I can’t test-post on those forums to check).

That’s a fair point. I saw they offer a personal demo site to try out for 7 days so I’m going to request that and hopefully once set up the people having difficulties with mobile can help log in and say if they see improvement.

Yeah, the demo sites both look super sexy. The front end of the site makes me think the editing will be optimised for movile. A trial would be good. I’d like to see how videos look on it too. They are a bit hard to watch on this version of the site.

I’ll send you guys logons when the temp site is setup. Truth is that it’s a ‘skin’ over the same engine so I don’t know if it will resolve all those issues but the sales patter says it is optimised for mobile so let’s see if that works.

Ok for the moment if you want to share either Youtube or Twitter stuff embedded you just need to click on the ‘text’ tab at the top right. I’ll see if there’s a way to put it straight into the default ‘visual’ option but I don’t think that’s too onerous if not. The direct Twitter thing didn’t work on the previous Discourse board anyway.

Just noticed that the DM’s are gray text on a green background.  Is there anyway that can be changed to a black text on a white background or something a little more readable?

Not easily. The messages are a separate add-on that use the default grey built in to the board software. The method I used to change text to black doesn’t recognise it exists.

It may be something that’s automatically fixed if the new skin is applied so we’ll see when we try that out.

The way that videos display on the page means that they actually hide any text that has been written underneath them in the same post. It’s something that I hadn’t seen happen before, so I guess that it’s linked to the changes that have been made across the board?
