I really like the first episode of this show.

Solid characterization of Superman, “Thanks, my mom made it for me!”, and the twins were quite good. Definitely the CW series I’ve enjoyed the most so far. It’s not without problems, but I am intrigued for now. Looking forward to the next episode.

  • #56529

“Thanks, my mom made it for me!”

I’m not watching the show, but that’s a line from Loeb/Sale’s Superman For All Seasons isn’t it?

I haven’t read For All Seasons, so I didn’t know that, thanks!

Yeah, imagine that the boy wasn’t saved from falling off a building but from having a car land onto him, and you have the scene in Superman and Lois. It serves as the introduction scene for Superman in Metropolis in a quick montage-esque opening, and as such it sets the tone for the shows Superman.

He saves people. He’s wholesome and friendly. He likes his mom.

I liked it. Tyler Hoechlin is a good fit for that.

edited to add: He’s wearing this version of the costume, which was a nice touch:

Is that the regular costume for the show or just a retro one for the montage? Nice to get it in either way.

Nadria Tucker On Being Fired From ‘Superman & Lois’: ‘Toxicity’ Is Pervasive

I agree there is a problem but I have a couple of issues.

Is Kal-el really truly the rock where you make your stand? The writer created waves asking for representation. Go to small town Kansas and see how many minorities you see. Most Hollywood executives are bastards. They are counting $ bills not minority actors. Kal-el is white, has always been white, and was created for a white market. It took a very long time but there is now representation in Calvin Ellis and Val-Zod. https://www.staradvertiser.com/2021/02/28/breaking-news/ta-nehisi-coates-to-write-new-superman-film-2/

CW is also not the greatest target. Joe West, John Diggle, Black Lightning, Charlie(Clotho) from LoT, Jimmy Olsen. All strong characters without a whiff of tokenism.

There is a shit ton of work to be done in pursuit of equality so I am not saying stop demanding it but from what I read, she had an asshole of a boss not pervasive racism. Yes, HR did nothing about her claims, but it is HR and they shit on people of all races. It also sounds like Nadria Tucker might be a very cool person.

“In the grand scheme of things that have happened to people in the course of working in Hollywood, I have not experienced a fraction of the worst stuff that happened.

Maybe it is the author of the article who irritated me the most here. I liked the premiere and am annoyed at this article trying to kill this show before it even gets started. I have had this thought running around in my head. “If we had known about Whedon from the beginning and shut him down then, what happens to Buffy, Angel, and Firefly?”  Extrapolating that idea to this case. Does this article writer want to cut down S & L before it even starts or is she/he just looking for her minute of fame?

It wants clicks and that’s it. Outrage is a great click-generator, regardless whether it’s faux or real.

Just after watching the third episode of this. I’m onboard for the whole season at this point, but I tend to zone out a bit at the high school stuff. Not necessarily because it’s bad, but because I’m so very, very disinterested in high school drama and this is textbook “jocks bad mmkay” stuff. Bleurgh.

I find it curious how a lot of people who hate MoS are loving this when it’s sooooo similar (it could almost be a sequel, tbh), but hey, sure I guess.

Anyhow, it’s very much the highest quality CW show, so yay? Not sure if that’ll be enough in a post Wandavision landscape but we’ll see… and it’s decent enough to keep watching, for now that is, because it’s starting to show some CW-sized cracks.

Anyone knows if this is a full 20+ episode season, or is this a shorter show?

I an genuinely liking this show. I was going to watch the first season no matter what, but I am enjoying and declaring a success.

    Hmmm, no ‘Luthor’ this week.
Seems to be from an alternate world, but I thought we got rid of those?
But if there is another world with an evil Superman then they could do a version of ‘Injustice’.

And it’s apparent that Morgan Edge is surrounded by people with abilities and/or alien (this Kirby creation has ties to Darkseid originally), now who is this? Another Kryptonian? (has heat vision). Phantom Zone escapee?
At some point General Zod has to show up.

  • #57783

I think I fell asleep(trouble sleeping) and need to watch 3 again(Edge and metas?) but I have to say i am loving Hoechlin’s performance. The way he shifts between Supes and Dad is great. When he sits down in the diner with the kids it made me smile. the scene between Luthor and General Lane was cool with Luthor remembering his own General Lane. Also liked the scene between Lois and her new editor where the editor is trying to explain to Lois how small town papers work.

  • #57851

I think I fell asleep(trouble sleeping) and need to watch 3 again(Edge and metas?)

Lois goes to meet her source in a motel room and someone else is there, Lois ‘calls’ Superman who shows up and is in a fight when this guy has powers.
Lois asks (after) “Why does Morgan Edge have someone with super powers working for him?” It’s assumed.
End of episode, he’s toasted by a woman with heat vision. Again, assumed working for Edge.

From Superman & Lois Episode 3 Review: The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower – Den of Geek

…nameless character is apparently “Subjekt-11” a designation which calls to mind “Subjekt-17” an alien raised by the Soviets to make Superman’s life miserable in Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco’s incredibly underrated run on the Superman comics.

It seems that’s Morgan Edge’s right hand woman, “Leslie Larr” vaporizing our mysterious baddie. The closest I can find to her is a “Lesla-Lar” who was an obscure Supergirl villain. THAT version of Larr hailed from Kandor
    _______________________________________________

And I forgot to mention, I’m just assuming we won’t see a Lex Luthor until season 2.
‘Capt. Luthor’ can keep the name going for one season and Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor stays wholly to Supergirl’s final season.
Does he re-up and stay on, or do they re-cast? We’ll find out after both seasons end (assumption).

    Ha!

Yeah, it took them a lot longer than I thought it would, but this show just became another CW-y drama crap show in the last few episodes… to the point where it also looks pretty bad at this point, but this last episode, nah. I think I’m out with this one.

That may have been me. I swear I was logged in, but the board ate my post and spit me out (“You need to be logged in to Reply”).
Anyways, I’ll try again from home computer.

Yes, Hoechlin is very good in all the roles he plays: Superman & Clark. Hero, Husband, and Father.

His only drawback from a Hollywood standpoint is I doubt his frame could bulk up to the unnaturally huge size they seem to like to bank their money on.
I’d like to think what he’s doing right now, along with upcoming Robert Pattinson in The Batman, is making them realize you don’t always need that steroid-monkey size. The benefit would be a much larger casting net that would be a big advantage.
We’ll see what the future brings.

And I am enjoying this show. I like the cast, the kids, the overall dynamic.
They’ve fooled me all over the place, so I like that also.

Yes, you do have to ignore the lack of calling Auntie Kara or Jonn Jonzz for help if they’re in the same universe, but this could possibly be a Pre-Crisis Season One (one without those people) and the merger happens after.
Or it’s after Supergirl’s Final season, which signals death is inevitable for some (or escape to 30th century).
I do think it works better on it’s own, and probably a post-Covid way of things anyways (for a while).

Anyways, good job all around on making a hit show!
Looking forward to the final episodes, and then next season (plus many, many more)!

Since I’ve not watched any of the arrowverse series except for an episode here or there, and the crisis special, in my headcanon it’s on its own. Even if it turns out there are other superheroes in this universe, I’m going to deny the existence of the arrowverse for as long as it’s possible.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #69674

Well that was the problem with this last episode and the Diggle cameo… I thought this was gonna be its own thing, and that would’ve been best, but they just cemented it within the Arrowverse, somehow. That, along with the painfully CW-esque storyline with Morgan Edge being Superman’s halfbrother (what the fuck???) and about the laziest villain lair I’ve ever seen in my life… yeah no…

Even the Doom suit looked a lot more shitty than in previous episodes. It seems that whoever was in charge of photography ain’t doing the whole show and now it’s looking like a regular arrowverse show… the writing’s also been taking a nose-dive.

Tyler Hoechlin Was the Only Actor Who Auditioned to Play the Arrowverse’s Superman – CBR story

Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin discusses his audition process to play the Man of Steel on Supergirl — and reveals nobody else was brought in.

Evidently, Superman & Lois’ Tyler Hoechlin was always The CW’s clear choice to play Superman — because no one else was asked to try out beyond him.

Reflecting on his original Supergirl audition process to Men’s Health, Hoechlin explained, “One of my agents called me and said, ‘Hey, I think I might know what your meeting’s about.’ And they sent me this article that they were looking to cast Superman, and I was like, ‘Okay, maybe… Who knows?'” After a half-hour of auditioning with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, the duo told him, “‘We’re looking to do this. Is that something you’d be interested in?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, sure. Let’s talk about it!’ We just talked about the character, what we found interesting about him, and it was just that one meeting.”

What surprised Hoechlin later on was that Berlanti and Kreisberg didn’t evaluate any other actors following their conversation. “I found out later through them that, apparently, that was the only meeting they took for the character,” he continued, “so they apparently saw something [in me].”

Hoechlin first debuted as Clark Kent and Superman in Supergirl’s Season 2 premiere following its network transfer from CBS to the CW, marking the Man of Steel’s first supporting cast appearance on the show. Following the show’s Season 2 finale, he appeared on 2018’s “Elseworlds” crossover alongside Elizabeth Tulloch in her first Lois Lane appearance, then returned for the 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event, where Clark and Lois tried to help the Arrowverse heroes and Paragons save their multiverse from the Anti-Monitor. This involved searching the multiverse for alternate Supermen who could provide assistance, such as Tom Welling’s Smallville Clark Kent and Brandon Routh once again playing Superman following 2006’s Superman Returns.

Superman & Lois follows Clark, Lois and their twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan, as they return to Clark’s hometown of Smallville following his mother’s death. It was recently announced that Superman & Lois’ first season will receive a Blu-Ray and DVD release on October 19, two months after the show debuts on HBO Max.

I kept wondering why Tyler Hoechlin looks so familiar, so I finally did an IMDB search, and now it seems so obvious: As a child actor, he played Tom Hanks’ son in the feature film ROAD TO PERDITION (which, of course, is a faithful adaptation of another comic book). Now I cannot unsee it.

This show ,imo, did its best to be a family friendly, good old fashioned show and the Finale shows that. I loved that it ended on such a warm, loving moment. It did not need to create manufactured drama through a cliff hanger and it made me happy.

Sooo I guess the good: They did put a lot more money into this one, specially the first and last couple episodes, so that’s nice… I always appreciate an effort on the production side. Also, the actors, while I don’t necessarily agree with the casting, they’re all mostly good and very capable. And lastly, a LOT of Snyder influences, which is kinda funny, but hey, I can appreciate it.

Buuut, that said, in terms of writting, as in the plot and the dialogues, it’s still a pile of CW cringy garabage, so it kinda dampens all of the efforts made at the production level. I give it until the end of next season to fully become another Flash, so yeah I’m not gonna wait around.

Still though, A for effort, but I’ll stick with Doom Patrol… hell even Titans.

  • #73735

DC’s Power Girl Should Join SUPERMAN & LOIS in Season 2

I’m a bit suspect in adding characters like that regularly to a show. Maybe for an episode, but it seems to draw focus away the more regular or recurring characters are added who have the same powers and do a lot of the same things.

However, there is a lot of material in Power Girl and Supergirl and Superboy to make for some interesting storylines. In the end, though, the whole origin of Superman was that he was the lone survivor of Krypton, but Kryptonian survivors pop up all over the place now even to the extent they have secret bases and armies.

From the latest “Matt’s Inside Line” on TVLine.com:

Since Jonathan Kent has recently been revealed to be bisexual in the comics, can we expect Superman & Lois to delve deeper into Jonathan’s sexuality? –Fatih
You probably shouldn’t expect the show to follow the comic’s lead per se. “We’re certainly not opposed to exploring it,” Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing told TVLine when we delivered your query. “But the way our character was set up, it feels like the comic book story and what we’re doing are two separate stories. I don’t think that we will, but we’re certainly not opposed to it.”

  • #91101

I do really enjoy this show. The writers did a good take on Zod last season and even moreso with this new take on the Bizarro World.
No comedy in this, a real sense of dread.

That other Jonathan being a douchebag and wearing clone Superboy from the comics outfit really works.

The family bickering is real and I like how the kids get to speak their minds like when Jonathan says “It’s literally the reason she’s in danger right now.”

Which led to the surprising part at the end.

There’s a season 3 greenlit, and they’ve got my confidence in whatever they give a new take to.
    Well done!

I enjoyed Jordan’s beat down of Conner/jon. I thought it was an interesting tactic to have Lois to be the weak link in this episode. As far as suspense goes, I kept expecting Bizarro Lana to show before all the Green K was removed from Supes.

It’s on the CW, where it suffers from chronic low ratings. Add that the CW is being sold, S&L has always been facing cancellation. The new CW owners may want to cancel it anyway to move away from the Arrowverse and adjacent series so they can go into whatever direction they want with the network. Cavil’s return may have some impact, but there are bigger factors at play.

They didn’t really do enough with it – because it was confusing, but I liked the idea that Bizarro Superman and the Bizarro universe was in some ways moving backward in time. From that perspective, Bizarro’s world would have kept getting better as ours decayed toward entropy.

Seems like the right move to me.I think one of the reasons the DC movies haven’t particularly taken off is that they’ve diluted the characters over time with animation and tv shows. We’ve already seen a lot of these characters in live action with Smallville and the Arrowverse, so it takes away the excitement and cool factor.

  • #122756

Well that was unexpected. This is a very nasty version of Lex (who now knows everything), and I like it.

Luthor’s daughter? We will see her soon, played by Agents of Shield’s Elizabeth Henstridge.

Was that a Brainiac reference? I hope that goes somewhere. This is the final season after all.

Loved the whole 2 episode premiere and very glad its back.
