I’d rather get into this for a little while than doom scrolling and depressing US politics. The DCU movies under Gunn is beginning, but Snyder fans have been complaining and lobbying to WB about not letting Snyder have the reins. I saw this years back on speculation on what might have been. How true it is, no one can say:

I just don’t see WB and Snyder do their own Phase 1 etc. intro movies, and it all leading up to a DC style Endgame movie. How many Marvel movies led into Endgame? Is the public going to watch 8-10 additional movies for the DCU? Too much.

It always got to me how as much as Bruce trained in all the arts of combat that for all the prep time in some of the fights, the Joker actually got some hits in and almost killed him. Then I got into training that it doesn’t exactly prepare you for a street fighter where everything goes and there is no structure nor discipline. You can’t predict someone who has unorthodox, unpredictable moves. Like this:

So there is some “truth” to why Batman gets stabbed or decked by the Joker.

I read the X titles and now there is age of Revelation storyline. We’ve already had Age of Apocalypse, Sins of Sinister and other “realities”.
I get it that writers want to do more and get out of 616 editorial constraints and do whatever in a Parallel Universe, Parallel Dimension, and Alternate Timelines. (What’s the difference? 🤣) But it is getting to be a worn device tbh.
The thing is, corporate Marvel doesn’t actually want to go in bold new directions. Instead they want to continuously recycle old ideas in new packaging and hope that the consumer doesn’t notice. The only significant difference now is that they are giving work to people who are willing to work for a much lower rate than the previous standard, as a way to make profit without increasing sales. If you’re looking for innovative and competent writing, art and editing at Marvel these days, generally speaking, you’re looking in the wrong place.
These huge Marvel X stories/events where you have to buy all 6 titles/week to follow along are to me, a nice time to take a clean break from it all.

I grew up with Byrne art and as talented as he was, he was a dick at times. When Kirby wanted his art back and reclaim some payment from the company, Byrne was saying how happy he was to be a “cog in the Marvel machine”. Maybe his deal was different as he dealt with Shooter or some office politics/bovine excrement was going on. Anyway, Kirby got wind of it and drew a few panels of a character named “Cog Burn”:

Few things:
These “What if?” or “Elseworlds” stories about alternate events of a given known story usually never end well. It might be on purpose to just say that the original written story was the best one and we got it right the first time. And it’s not just comics. The Star Trek “Strange New Worlds” had an alternate reality episode where Pike remained captain and how he handled the Romulan ship in “The Balance of Terror”. Stephen King’s story about time travel and preventing the JFK assassination ended up with some US conservative movement and George Wallace got in the White House and started WW3. (I’d like to think that if Oswald didn’t do anything, the Vietnam situation would never have escalated, the Beatles would have played the WH, the 60s would have been different etc. but not WW3)
It seems there is no “What if?” story where in the alternate reality things turned out better.

DC and Marvel have put out a few crossover stories – I Always wondered about these Marvel v DC character but then it turns out it’s really one character fighting their analogue counterpart. I always wanted a Superman vs. Gladiator but it was John Byrne who developed Gladiator’s powers and feats as more telekinetic etc. instead of just brute strength. Then years later when he went to DC and was given the Superman reboot, Superman’s powers and his picking up huge oversized structures were the same. The match up would just be a battle of analogues. Supreme is just a thinly veiled you know who…

Seeing the old X Factor of the original 5 X-men compared to them from 1963 just shows how altered characters get to remain relevant. Beast, Angel to Archangel, Marvel Girl to Phoenix, Iceman no longer looking like a snowman. Then in the X titles how Psylocke originally was in her pink outfit and butterfly aura, the Siege Perilous (or Plot Device) and how she was redone in this sexy Asian body with a psychic knife and an Elektra outfit but in blue. It made her more noticeable though. So many other examples not just Marvel.

He. Yeah, the Empire Strikes Back thing is something that really bugged me when I first noticed it. (Which was, like… well, definitely not when I first watched it, but sometime later, as an adult.)
And the GoT thing was one that definitely annoyed me in the last season(s). It was one thing that really showed the difference between the show based on Martin’s books and what they did on their own.
Either way, I like the theory that that’s what stopped Martin’s writing. It really must be a terrible slog, at the point where you have that amount of characters.
Back to Gail Simone: She was the one who phrased the term “Women in Refrigerators” – this storytelling trope of a brutal murder or attack of a woman that starts the male protagonist on his call to action. I see some aspects of it but it involves an old friend, sidekick, or a person of color that starts him on his avenging journey. But Simone always noticed it over the years, but it took those Green Lantern panels that got her to phrase it.

She has a point when you think about Jean Grey, Madelyne Pryor, Rogue, Carol Danvers, Scarlet Witch. How many are well grounded, centered, with no tragedy/trauma?
Well, when it comes to being well-centered and without trauma, you also can’t say that about a lot of the male characters.
I think the point is rather about the way violence is done to these women, and why – the female characters just being a device to motivate the male protagonist, or to evoke a response from the viewers. Has this changed since Simone made her observation a quarter of a century ago? I suspect so, but I don’t read enough superhero books to really be able to tell.
By my avatars, I reread a bunch of Grendel, Matt Wagner’s creation.
I like Wagner because he isn’t afraid to take chances. But the first Grendel’s (Hunter Rose) whole life story is in the tpb “Devil by the Deed” , and all the mini stories, crossovers mini arcs are written and weaved into it. After Hunter Rose come the different incarnations of Grendel.
Most of the better stories involve Hunter Rose, like the first crossover with Batman. It’s crazy, because the DC futures and the Grendel futures are totally incompatible, but the crossover stories (Batman and the other one involving the Shadow) are Ok. It’s mostly Hunter Rose being excited for a challenge, evil scheming, a slashing bloodbath, he loses or has to retreat.
They are VERY dark stories though. Grendel is sort of an inverted Batman, just as smart, but it’s an indy character and Wagner gets dark with it.
I read some Grendel stories, but never got really into it, although I liked the individual minis well enough.
I did read the entirety of Wagner’s “Mage” series though, and thought they were great.
