This is a thread to talk about Star Trek
Regarding the TNG finale:
Q was talking to Picard about the next phase, to think in terms of other levels of existence. A nice speech, but wasn’t Wesley doing that already with the Traveler?
Also on Voyager, Q wanted to mate with Janeway to make a baby Q or something like that. What about that TNG episode with that teenage blonde girl whose powers gradually manifested themselves on the Enterprise? What about her?
Those fotos of Siddig and Visitor are great.
I always really liked Alexander Siddig in DS9, and always felt it was a bit of a shame that he didn’t come up more in other productions. I think he was in Kingdom of Heaven? And of course he was more recently in Game of Thrones.

Somewhat inevitably, he also played a terrorist in 24.
I agree, I’ve always liked him.
He’s worked pretty steadily since DS9, according to Wiki. Lots of terrorist roles because of course, but other stuff too.
Favorite scene with Siddig was the ds9 episode when they were drugged or something and were in love with each other. Kira and Bashir were making out. In the end they got the antidote or something that it would wear off in a few days and Bashir was on his way to fuck Kira who was still under and Sisko blocked him saying “You might hold off on that…, for a day or two!” 😂
Star Trek’s Borg Were Nearly Insects – and It’s a Good Thing That Changed – CBR link
The villainous Borg started out as the insect-like parasites from Stark Trek: TNG’s first season, and in retrospect, the change was for the best.
The zombie-like Borg set the pace for Star Trek: The Next Generation villains from their first appearance. They were promised as a threat unlike anything the Federation had faced before — an overt and stated break from the Klingons and the Romulans — and in the process became the signature villains for The Next Generation crew and their counterparts on Star Trek: Voyager. But as with many iconic parts of Star Trek, their journey from concept to screen wasn’t an easy one.
As originally conceived, they were much different in appearance and function: closer to insects than the chalk-faced humanoids they eventually become. Initial plans were quite elaborate, and the notion of overtly alien antagonists was appealing. In retrospect, the Borg likely did much better using actors in makeup rather than attempting to realize them with more elaborate special effects. However, it took events that had little to do with the show to facilitate the change.
Conceptually, the Borg began with The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 25, “Conspiracy,” which entailed a race of super-intelligent parasites infiltrating Starfleet command. Picard and Riker uncover the conspiracy and kill the aliens’ queen to stop the invasion. The episode ends with the creatures sending a mysterious signal out into space. It stands out for its uncharacteristically dark tone and ominous implications, characteristics later applied to the Borg. Fans cite it as Season 1’s high point, despite moments of overt body horror.
As it turns out, that was no mistake. According to Michael and Denise Okuda’s Star Trek Chronology, the parasites were intended to segue into the Borg’s introduction. The insect mentality held a great deal of appeal to the writers — with drones obeying a single queen and entire hives functioning as a unit without thought to individuals — and the parasites held the properly nightmarish qualities. Presumably, such Borg would work the same way as they did in “Conspiracy,” as mind-controlling creatures embedded in humanoid hosts and operating their bodies like puppets under the command of a queen.
Originally, these insectoid Borg were to be introduced in Season 1, Episode 26, “The Neutral Zone,” as the source of a series of mysterious disappearances along the Romulan-Federation border. Maurice Hurley intended for Starfleet to team up with their former enemies to face the combined threat of the parasites. Fate intervened in the form of the 1988 Writer’s Guild strike that ran from March until August of that year, crippling the show’s scriptwriting. Captains’ Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages reveals that budgetary constraints forced TNG to end the season with a clip show, which arose when Paramount demanded an otherwise impossible three-day shoot for the entire episode.
In the face of that, the parasites were redesigned, transforming into the humanoid Borg that fans have come to love. The proposed partnership with the Romulans was dropped, and the Collective gained a new introduction with Season 2, Episode 16, “Q Who,” which launched them as the major villains of The Next Generation. The parasites and their purpose were left a mystery, at least in canon. However, the Star Trek Adventures tabletop role-playing game features a non-canon adventure module — “A Star Beyond the Stars” — that utilizes many of the original plot ideas, including a Federation-Romulan alliance against the parasites.
Frankly, the canonical Borg fared much better in their final form than they would have as insects. Besides the money saved on the budget, the subtle changes in tone emphasize the horror of lost identity more than they would with the parasites’ possession. Furthermore, the sheer relentless nature of the Borg runs counter to the parasites’ comparatively tiny size, and the lack of individual parasites stresses the Collectives’ unified nature. The Borg also keep Hurley’s core notion of an insect hive — complete with a Queen controlling it all — while morphing it into the sci-fi equivalent of a zombie army. Individuals lose their identity to a single entity, impossibly huge and incredibly powerful, rather than creatures who can quite literally be stepped on once discovered. None of it would have happened without a cut in the budget. The Next Generation ultimately reaped huge dividends from the consequences of the Writers’ Strike.
Aside from stories of some fans stalking Jeri Ryan, I heard of one fan who asked Jonathan Frakes for the gum he was chewing!

Everyone knows Lower Decks is back on Thursday, right? I’m pretty hyped, it’s quickly become my favourite of the modern shows

Interesting! The parasites would’ve made great antagonists, too, but yeah, the Borg really were a huge step for Trek.
They kinda went back to the paranoia that the parasites would’ve brought when they introduced the shapechangers and the Dominion War in DS9.
Star Trek Discovery – Let’s talk about Michael! Who knows what Michael might do?
Star Trek Picard – Let’s do dumb shit that doesn’t make any sense! Who cares?
But we can now rip eyes out on screen too!

If that was your initial reaction, then you really shouldn’t be in this thread until you know more. 😊
Man… Some of these cosplay people and their ideas are really good!!!
I came across this site that may of interest to the diehard fans among us:
Sensational concepts is good for the fandom like the “crossover” ie. the TARDIS materializes on the (either TOS or TNG) Enterprise bridge. The crossover is a meeting/combining of two iconic characters or shows and so on and so forth.
What if…? is as you know, a show whose concept is gaining some traction. The “alternate reality” etc…
How about What If…? Star Trek style?
What if the Botany Bay stayed around in space and was discovered by Picard and the TNG crew?
What if Picard died as Locutus in the invasion and Riker took over as captain of the Enterprise and Shelby was his #1?
Any comments or more ideas?
My “pitch” for Star Trek Into Darkness (which featured Khan) was that the Klingons stumbled upon the Botany Bay first, unfroze Khan, he takes over the ship, then Khan goes to Q’onos and conquers the Klingon Empire, and then sets his sites on the Federation. And, actually, all of that would have been in a post-credits scene or teaser, and the main story of the movie would be all-out war between the Khan-led Klingons and Starfleet.
I think that they really missed an opportunity with the Kelvinverse, where it could have been one big “What If,” — What if the Klingons found Khan first? What if Kirk and Co. encountered the Borg? What if the Doomsday Machine came to Earth’s Solar System? An alternate TOS universe, a lot like Marvel’s “Ultimate” line, where they could do crazy shit and alternate takes with the old crew that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
What if… Everyone told Neelix to fuck off?
How about What If…? Star Trek style?
It’s called the Mirror Universe.

The Federation
Kirk left Khan and company on that planet, never did come back and apparently never informed the Federation they were there to check up on them. Can you blame Khan? Still, surviving in that place for 15 years! That’s a stretch… In the TNG Pegasus episode, the admiral felt that the Federation dropped the ball on their treaty not to develop their own cloaking device, giving the Klingons and Romulans a huge edge. Hard to disagree imho… Then there was Eddington’s rebellious speech to Sisko about the Federation, the stance of the Maquis, how the Federation dealt with Bajor after the Cardassian occupation, and I haven’t seen Lower Decks but I heard that the Archon planet Kirk and Spock liberated actually returned to worshipping Landru!
The Federation isn’t a bad idea, but their policies and actions have been hit and miss.
The Federation isn’t a bad idea, but their policies and actions have been hit and miss.
I think this is true of any government, or body of power of any kind. No matter how good your society’s collective intentions, it’s pretty easy for corrupt individuals to take over. So in a society that’s 99% peaceful and honest and altruistic, the leaders of that society will be heavily drawn from the 1% that are ruthless, self-serving and corrupt. Simply by the fact that ruthless, self-serving, corrupt individuals will find it easier to get into a position of privilege. because, you know, they’re ruthless, self serving and corrupt.

Drednok — now, whenever I see a robot or android in Star Trek, I’m wondering if it’s going to tie into that Federation of Synthetics we glimpsed in Picard.
I’m just hoping it has a cod Australian accent
Regarding the Federation – Funny how it is a collection/coalition of all these planets who are older, wiser, and have so much more experience than Earth, yet it is still the humans taking the lead.
Also, even when the crew meets an advanced people or advanced energy being who should be so much wiser than the Enterprise crew, the crew in the end is in the right and there is an exposition of humanist philosophy.
I don’t know… Earth in Babylon 5 was very different IIRC. I believe their coalition of planets were different too.
Watching the Prodigy opening again, the Protostar reminds me a bit of the concept sketches for the Enterprise D that got rejected, and then became the basis for the “plucked chicken” Enterprise E before they in turn got revised into the Sovereign class.
is that the first opening that doesn’t make so much use of slo-mo. “In Space, everything moves slow” must have been the motto for every Star trek up to now.

The Enterprise zooms past the camera a fair bit in the TOS and TNG intros.

There’s been a lot of good ones out there. I’ve found Sabotage (after all, we like the beats and shouting), The Final Countdown, and Eye of the Tiger amongst others.
Totally, first one was putting the Enterprise theme to it hahaha.

DS9 got away from this quite a bit – with it managing to go more into the various cultures – the Garak-Bashir relationship being a particular highlight.

“The trial is never over” is exactly how I feel about a second season of Picard.
Season 2 looks fucking terrible.
It’s like they mixed every bad Star Trek time travel trope into one series.
The end of Lower Decks this week had me in stitches. Whomst among us wouldn’t prank call Armus?
Apparently, Picard S1 didn’t really excite anyone (apart from the cameo scenes where we saw some old TNG characters stop by and visit)
Synths? Huh?
So they went to the old sensational material of bringing back Q, the Q/Picard relationship, alternate reality, a plot to go back in time to fix the past, and so on.
They know that more fans will get on board for that.
They know that more fans will get on board for that.
Maybe, maybe not. Fans may look at it as a retread of a bunch of different old ST episodes/arcs Frankensteined into one season-long story. When I saw the trailer, I immediately flashed back to ST IV and some of the Voyager and DS9 episodes where they went back in time to “contemporary” Earth. The trailer did nothing for me.
Lower Decks really is the best Trek since DS9. I’m enjoying seeing the crew becoming more competent and there’s still more character development than Piccard and Disco.
This whole YouTube channel…
A fun video:
I’m not sure why everyone gets so hung up on Chekov and Khan knowing each other.
Just because Chekov didn’t appear until the next season doesn’t mean he wasn’t serving aboard the Enterprise at that time they recovered the Botany Bay. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that he was there for all of season one, and was promoted to the bridge crew for season two.
It was said that Koenig himself knew the inconsistency, but didn’t want to bring it up or he would not be in the movie.
————-
Now this tidbit I did not know:
From Day of the Dove (1968), 3×07 – Kang wears the same golden sash worn by Kor in Star Trek: The Original Series: Errand of Mercy (1967). The same sash would be worn (albeit on the opposite shoulder) by Lieutenant Worf in the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).
Exciting eh?
It was said that Koenig himself knew the inconsistency, but didn’t want to bring it up or he would not be in the movie.
He’s often joked at cons that Chekov wasn’t assigned to the bridge yet, but was on the ship, and in fact was using the bathroom when Khan really needed to go and he blamed the young Ensign for his discomfort ever since.

Alice Krige coming back as the Borg Queen was a welcome surprise. And yeah, this episode had me in stitches, between SIX HOURS LATER, Boimler obsessively improving his run through the sim, the Klingon breaking his back trying to pick up a peanut… It was a great episode.
