This is a thread to talk about Star Trek
It was very well written in so many areas. The writers really adhered to the original episode and their “variation” on it was so spot on. I guess everyone will re watch the episode in TOS to compare. There are some who want to nitpick on the Kirk actor, but it is not an obligation to mimic Shatner any more than every Spock actor must mimic Nimoy. “Kirk” was enough in the part and to me, it did not take away from the ep.
So many things… McCoy never became the doctor, Scotty was there, Sulu and the “racist” helmsman in TOS never made it.
Pike as captain was good in situations up his alley, but he was just too “different” (not better not worse) and his diplomacy approach wasn’t right at that situation. (See Edith Keeler – right message, wrong time.)
Where did all these “good episodes” come from all of a sudden in Star Trek? The fans are so surprised as they always said 8 in a row… 10 for 10 etc.
Great ending. And…. It is all online that Season 2 production was wrapped up that same day! All that is left would be adding in the special effects and other post production things.
So I finally caught up with the remaining eps…
I have to say, overall, BRAVO! This was a great season of great TV… I could see myself becoming a fan of THIS Star Trek (not of the other garbage shows though).
I don’t know what the fuck happened between making Discovery, Picard and this, but whatever happened, thank Jeebus…
On a more negative note, I absolutely hated episode 8… so much that I had to skip forward a lot of it… I hate that kind of cringy shit, and most of the acting and directing was pretty bad… but hey, I’ll allow it since it’s more of a personal thing… and the other 9 episodes were mostly good to great.
Very much looking forward to S2 of Captain Pike and friends… oh and hey, no one got uber emotional and cried every episode… holy shit, when will wonders cease!
Oh shit, I almost forgot: Damn I was bummed about Hemmer, I really liked him… good job to all the actors though, top notch marks to all of them.

You are not into “comic relief” episodes (or scenes) it’s OK. I understand. To each their own.
I didn’t like the “Pike’s hair” stuff as it distracted from the show imho.
I see it all as one of the best Star Trek seasons in a long time.
Long overdue as “everyone” is so pleasantly surprised…
—————————
Still, I see some other social media postings from those who want to appear so “clever” with their “eagle eye” and give some obscure criticism.
But in doing such anal nitpicking and over analyzing, they are just telling on themselves, depending on how valid the point made really is.

So the fourth episode was really good. This is the fastest a Trek show has ever found its feet.
Please don’t fuck it up.
Oh, I finished Piccard season 2.
Wow. To go from dull and boring to shitting the bed that much in the last episode was impressive. Pity the android space squid didn’t make a reappearance
I’m reading this now wondering what your comments will be when I get to the section of this thread that covers episodes 7, 8 & 9 where they royally fuck it up with some awful writing and performances
then episode 10 where they totally redeem themselves

Be a little more constructive, I can’t be fucked reading all this negativity.
“Be a little more constructive, I can’t be fucked reading all this negativity.”
If you’re talking to me I was a fan of the end of Discovery season 4, all of Lower Decks and Strange new worlds.
Piccard was an unforgivable mess. 🤷🏻♂️
“Be a little more constructive, I can’t be fucked reading all this negativity.”
I wasn’t aiming for you, I was just reiterating something I saw another unnamed poster post in the New Comics thread a while back and couldn’t help but give them some of their own medicine.
Fucking hell, how many years have you been waiting to get that off your chest?
Oh, don’t worry – I’ve entangled your name with that whole interaction. I’ll do it again and again and again. You see I, boyishly handsome and tall as I am, can be fucked.
Edited to add: It’s not like this forum forgets old talking points. Man of Steel, Prometheus, and your complete lack of fuckability. It’s all in there.

Georgiou probably killed it, then cooked and ate the corpse.

Not yet, Kurtzman mentioned during the panel two new shows being worked on. Some speculation is that those could be S31 and Starfleet Academy.
Last time Meyers spoke about the Khan project, he said that they were working to make it an audio play:
As a guest on the latest episode of Page One: The Writer’s Podcast, Nicholas Meyer was asked about the project. He replied, “That will be a podcast,” and when the host laughed, Meyer revealed he was serious:
It is. I’m not joking… I am concluding a deal to turn it into a podcast which I will write and presumably direct. And if the podcast is a hit, then maybe we’ll revisit it on film of some kind.
Meyer didn’t get into any other details but when asked directly by TrekMovie, he confirmed the project is currently a possibility. On the Page One podcast, Meyer talked about the benefits of audio drama:
I love radio plays… when I was in college, I directed a play a week. Talking on behalf of radio plays, I believe that all great artistic media rely for their success on something that they leave out. Paintings do not move. Music has no intellectual content. Words are merely code on a page. In each of those cases, it is the imaginative contribution of the listener, the reader… When your imagination complements the sounds, which is otherwise just sounds… Film alone has the hideous capacity to do everything for you. We call this eye candy and candy is not good for you. So I look for ways for things to leave out. And radio is a great way for things to leave out. Imagination does not need any training.

Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World
I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years.
Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.
Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.
I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.
Live Long and Prosper,
Kyle Johnson
It’s not exactly a new opinion, but it does appear that more and more people are waking up to The Orville (and how it does Trek better than current Trek shows).

The current season has been fantastic. I highly recommend it.
Yeah, I wouldn’t give The Orville a chance at the start and now I love it.
Season 3 (or New Horizons season one?) and they’ve proven they deserve a long haul contract.
I’m not going to get sucked into a “vs.” with Star Trek, but good for Seth MacFarlane and his team for what they’ve accomplished.
___________________________________________
Note: Season 3 was announced as 11 episodes, but only 10 filmed
The season was initially announced as consisting of eleven episodes,[17] but one episode was not filmed due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.[18] Titled “Sympathy for the Devil”, it was instead adapted as a novelization written by MacFarlane, and takes place between “Midnight Blue” and “Domino”. The audiobook is narrated by guest star Bruce Boxleitner. The novella was released on July 19, 2022.[19]
The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil
In 1914 New York City, a woman leaves her baby at the front desk of a hotel and never returns. The staff decide to give the baby to a German couple staying in the hotel, who name the baby Otto and return with him to Germany. As a teenager, Otto begins to sympathize with the Nazi Party and develops a strong disdain for Jews, and joins the Schutzstaffel. Otto later marries and fathers a son. Otto becomes the commander of a concentration camp, where he kills Jewish prisoners to entertain himself. Ed and Kelly arrive at the camp and end the program, revealing Otto’s reality to be a simulation, and take Otto to the Orville and his parents, who reveal his true name to be Adam. Adam’s parents recount that they were energy researchers living and working in an underground laboratory when the Krill attacked their laboratory to steal their research. Adam’s mother hid him in their 1914 simulation before the Krill abducted and imprisoned them, and Adam was left to be raised by the simulator for nearly thirty years. Adam has difficulty adjusting to reality, and the Orville crew unsuccessfully attempt to deprogram him. Adam escapes from his quarters and takes an officer hostage, whom he has take him to the ship’s simulator, where he has the computer create a simulation of his wife and son in a reality where Germany won World War II. Ed and Talla apprehend Adam and arrange for him to be sent to a facility for extensive psychological deprogramming. Decades later, an elderly Adam is working as a baker and runs into Ty Finn, and mentions Ty’s mother helped him during a difficult time.

That’s animation though.
Still counts on the margin…
You know that behind closed doors Odo was strutting around looking like Seven of Nine, singing Abba into a hairbrush and knocking back the lambrini.
That’s animation though.
One would have thought there’d been enough quality animation shows at this point to have gotten rid of the “but that’s animation” ghetto. Especially when Lower Decks is still the best modern Trek show.
Lower Decks is still the best modern Trek show
You mean second best.
After The Orville.
Speaking of: That was a great return for the show. Love that the Cerritos swooshes around in the logo ident thing at the start the way the Enterprise did for SNW, and presumably the Protostar, Discovery and La Sirena will for their shows.

Speaking of The Orville, I think the season finale did more to explain what living in a future post-scarcity society is like than ST ever has.
That’s animation though.

I understand Lorcan.
Lower Decks has good stories and there will be a crossover episode with SNW in season 2.
But the truth is, this thread does come alive when the live action shows are on and not so much the animated. Therefore the lull.
You mean second best.
After The Orville.
No, I really don’t.
You mean second best. After The Orville.
I really, really don’t understand the love for that show. Everything about the show is terrible. (Except Adrianne Palicki) It feels like a bad cover version of TNG. I’ve watched most of season one and it was bad. I tried the first ep of season 3 because of how everyone was banging on about how good it was and I couldn’t even get to the opening credits. Murry Gold at his worst never did a more intrusive score.
I mean, I don’t watch it, and normally keep my mouth shut about it, but I do not get it.
As for the Lower Decks, I love it. It, and SNW are the Trek I want right now.
Yeah, I’m glad people are enjoying the Orville, and that it’s giving people the vibe they don’t get from modern Trek, but it’s basically TNG fanfic and if I want TNG, I’ll just go watch it instead.
So I decided to watch season 2 of DISCO for the first time.
Pike, the slim alien commander, the quirky redhead in engineering, the black woman officer
who grew up in Spock’s family and was practically a sister to him, all nice.
Also, these last minute deductions that some anomaly was really trying to communicate
instead of attack. Where have I seen that from?
Finally saw Ethan Peck as Spock.
I just might watch all the seasons after this… If I have the spare time.
Picard series 3 trailer
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice, we’re both fucked.
Carol Kane is playing Chief Engineer Pellia in SNW series 2
Seeing Seven as the captain is cool. But it’s hard to get excited for this after having two pretty awful seasons of tv coming before it.
Especially seeing as the selling point for the new season seems to be, “Hey, we’re thinking what you want is EVEN MORE NOSTALGIA!!! THERE YOU GO!!!”
Nah, they can fuck right off.
While I’m not tempted by Picard s1-2, it is interesting that Paramount don’t fear losing subscribers by doing DVD / Blu Ray releases.
They’ve continued Discovery too. So SNW will come out sooner or later.
I remember Carol Kane in the sitcom “Taxi”. She was the girlfriend of Latka, the mechanic played by Andy Kaufman

I might look at the cartoon series because it picks up on the Boseman Captain.
A few talking issues online:
The cloaking device debates that the treaty set back the Federation
The introduction of Section 31 In DS9 was a great idea in retrospect
The Borg are a metaphor of colonialism
Sisko in the Mirror Universe bedding the Mirror Dax – Was it a deception?
Spock forcing a mind meld on Valeris in “The Undiscovered Country” – against her will
When Picard was being tortured by the Cardassian, Jellico was installed as captain. He was just different but he got the mission done
Why didn’t Picard stop that wedding between the Famke Jansen character and that diplomat when he found out the truth?
Kirk should have given Trelane more of a chance.
Same with Apollo. Might have done things differently.
Too much to get into tbh…
The Borg are a metaphor of colonialism
Well, duh. Or 20th late century imperialism.
I thought it was interesting that the Maquis accused the Federation as being pretty much the same as the Borg, spreading all over the universe and turning every civilisation they met into copies of themselves.
Picard: Second Self
I continue to find the Picard books more engaging than the TV output. Then again, this is a McCormack book and one with far greater latitude than The Last, Best Hope. That book was seriously limited by the TV decisions.
This story is built around Raffi but expands to look at the fall out from the destruction of Romulus, the legacies of the Dominion War and how it all impacts on Bajoran, Cardassian, Romulan and Federation relations. Woven in on top of that is the Cardassia-Bajor history.
The book does something neither the TV series or the relaunch books for DS9 did. Garak is known to not be a hero, yet in the series he never quite made it to villain status while still being a bad guy. What McCormack looks at here is the legacy of Garak’s past in the Obsidian Order, as Tain’s protege, and brings him to account for it.
At first, the fractured narrative seems to lack purpose, but it quickly becomes clear as to where it is going. This is not a simple book, it doesn’t give neat, easy answers. How could it when the web it builds up is so complex.
The final resolution is very effective and final. At the same time it sets other things in play for the other characters. Hopefully, even with the third series being it for TV, the books sell well enough to continue as this was a great bit of work.
Peanut Hamper!!
I couldn’t find the lower Decks thread. 😁
Yeah, like wow! What an episode!
https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-trek-lower-decks-why-peanut-hamper-return-matters/
“This episode has a little bit of Avatar, The Last Samurai, and Dances with Wolves in it,” Star Trek: Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan tells us “It’s a super sincere feeling and I think it adds to Star Trek.”
McMahan is referring to Peanut Hamper’s involvement with the avian species known as the Areore, who she lives with after finding her way to the planet. When Mike refers to this episode’s similarity to Avatar, he’s talking about Peanut Hamper’s defense of this new species against the Drookmani Scavengers that threaten the planet.
“It’s even got a Moana vibe in it, to boot,” he adds. In this case, he’s talking about the funny antics Ensign Peanut Hamper gets up to as she gains more awareness about organic life and its value in this episode; kind of similar to how Maui learns a bit of humility in Moana.
“We know who Peanut Hamper is,” McMahan says. “She isn’t like the exocomps from Star Trek: The Next Generation and [she] is such a change of speed from TNG.” Longtime Trek fans remember the original, selfless sentient exocomps we met in the TNG episode “The Quality of Life.”
“Every season I try to do an episode that’s truly my own,” McMahan says. “What can I do in an episode of Lower Decks where we shift the focus to a character we haven’t seen in two years, and tell a long story about her? And oh, she doesn’t even have a face!”
Since Peanut Hamper lacks any sort of human characteristics or features, everything she feels has to be presented by voice and limited body language. After all, an exocomp resembles a 1980s kid’s toy manufactured by Coleco. But in this episode, Peanut Hamper is still the manipulative and cunning robot we met in the first season. What comes out in this episode is her true nature.
I’ve seen a few people who really didn’t like this week’s episode, but they’re fools. I especially loved the sky turtles taking flight every time Peanut Hamper and Rahmda had sex.
I can see how that episode will annoy a lot of people but I loved it. It did feel a lot more Rick and Morty than Star Trek though.
I can see how that episode will annoy a lot of people but I loved it. It did feel a lot more Rick and Morty than Star Trek though.
The big complaint I’ve seen is that Peanut Hamper isn’t likeable enough to carry the episode, and like… that’s the joke?

Who? The aged android? Or the Holodeck program?
So, the helm officer on the Titan-A is Geordi’s daughter, and she’s played by Mica Burton.
Who? The aged android? Or the Holodeck program?
I was baffled by the Holodeck program, I mean, why? But the android suggests that this is going to be as bad as the first 2 seasons.
The second. The first one we knew the actor was in, so that could be a possiblity, even remote.
Didn’t realize that was the finale for Lower Decks this season, but it was a very worthy finale.
Lots of laughs everywhere. Would love to quote some, but I’ll let you watch first.
Nice not to leave things on a cliffhanger, and you should just turn off your TV when you’re told that…
There are two more episodes of Lower Decks this year according to Memory Alpha, but apparently they only gave out screener copies of episodes 1-8 to reviewers.
So there are. My mistake, but nice to he wrong.
Speaking of Lower Decks, a friend of mien was watching weird YouTube videos on Twitch earlier, and someone submitted this for viewing. And, well… That’s Noel Wells, who plays Tendi in Lower Decks being very strange.

Anyone watching Star Trek Prodigy? It’s fun but the concept behind it is amazing, and to be honest is wasted on a kids show.
This is also the first time I’ve really enjoyed Janeway in anything. She’s great as the Admiral and as The training hologram.
I’m definitely enjoying the ongoing plot than the adventure of the week, but it’s a fun show nonetheless
“Strange New Worlds” moved me to watch Season 2 of Disco to see Pike, Spock and a few scenes of No. 1.
Disco is OK… and I would recommend reading the synoptic Wiki fandoms, YT videos to get the gist of many episodes.
I really liked the Michelle Yeoh anti- hero character Georgiou, the quirky redhead in engineering, the one who starts spore drive, the rapport with Tig Notaro etc. The Klingon monastery ep involving Pike was cool.
And now I get pulled into watching season 3…

Thanks… So far season 3 is good, but it does the same thing: No matter what situation the crew is in, whether they visit a planet, some cosmic entity, even Starfleet of the future, the crew always has this elevated moral insight, and always know what to do to save the day.
Never mind that they are supposedly 7 centuries behind the times.
Giorgiou steals the show though 😂
————-
I get the feeling that Paramount regrets not giving McFarlane a chance at a franchise show given some of the acclaim “The Orville” has received.
This week’s episode of Prodigy is the best one yet. Very funny, exciting, the mind swap was really clever and the way the animation crew and the actors for Dahl and Janeway swap body language and mannerisms worked amazingly well. Really good cliffhanger too.
Harm’s Way
Trek books are quite a bit more finite in number these days so it’s nice to have one come along. And one I got a good few weeks ahead of its official mid-Jan 2023 release.
A bonus is that it is a follow-up to the Vanguard series. Do you have to read that to enjoy this? No, Mack ensures you have the info you need but if you’re not intrigued to check it out after hearing that a Shedai colony was deemed a severe enough threat to warrant the Federation and the Klingon Enpire turning a world into zero atmosphere globe of radioactive glass, not sure what else would work.
This story also sees Kirk and Spock dealing with scars from recent TV tales. Spock’s reflections on what it would require, personally, psychologically, materially to actually construct and use a planet-killer are excellent. Makes for a clever commentary on Star Wars too.
Add in Kang, a load of Klingons, some Starfleet Admirals, the Saggitarius and you’ve a nicely volatile brew that develops nicely and concludes well.
Can I haz a sequel pleez?
