The short, Skin a Cat, was absolutely terrible.

    It was very…. Adult Swim.

Well, yeah, it’s from the guy who did Too Many Cooks and stuff like that for Adult Swim.

Really enjoyed the first two eps of Lower Decks. I like that they promoted the crew and didn’t just keep the characters trapped in the same place for the entire show.
The Voyager stuff was a bit full on but making an entire show about Twovix was a ballsy move, loved seeing Salamanders as well.

Well, the shorts are from the guy that made Too Many Cooks, so I was expecting something like that.

And the trailer clearly said not canon!, so the weirdness level expected was increased :p

Yeah, I’m not feeling them much myself aside from the meta jokes like deliberate recreation of Filmation’s animation mistakes. I laughed more at this week’s Lower Decks than all the Very Short Treks so far combined. The comic the same guy is writing for the website is better, but even there it’s OK more than great.

Do I need to watch Discovery before I watch Strange New Worlds? I gave up on Discovery before the storyline with the Enterprise, and I want to give SNW a try but if I do will I be lost without the Discovery set-up?

Just to be clear: I’m not sure I can stand to watch any more of Discovery.

  • #112523

Not really, the Klingon War from series 1 of Discovery is more important to the backplot. The events of the series 2 finale are important to the plot of the first episode, but all you need to know is there was a big space battle and Discovery travelled a thousand years into the future but the official story is that the ship was destroyed

Watched 2 episodes of Strange New Worlds. Really liked it. Not _everything_ about it, there were definitely things that mildly annoyed me. But it might actually be the best Trek spin-off for decades.

Do I need spoiler tags? Probably not, but I’ll be cautious about what I say.

The first and main reason for why I fell in love with it at literally the opening credits: the opening credits. Best credits since at least TNG, primarily for having the proper music and voice-over, but also because… that’s… that’s… **the** Enterprise

Just discovered there are a bunch of TNG/DS9 era Star Trek novels in the audiobook section of Spotify. Anyone got any recommendations?

  • #115384

there’s a whole bunch of stuff by Una McCormack on there, and while I haven’t read any of the ones on there she’s consistently one of the better writers I have read. Her book The Never-Ending Sacrifice is easily the best Trek novel I’ve read, and I’ve heard good things about some of her ones that are on the list. I saw a Titan book as well and I read like 5 or 6 of those and they were pretty decent in general. New Frontier might be worthwhile, I read the first mini-book many years ago but never went any further.

If you want good Klingons, Keith R A DeCandido’s stories were excellent.

David R George III did a lot of the good stuff, as did Una McCormack and David Mack.

If you go from the start to the end, be aware Pocket Books sabotaged it massively by laying off the editor, Marco Palmieri, coordinating it all a few years in. Then they mandated a tine jump. It took a while for the line recover, but it never got back to what it had been.

They did a few event stories too – Unity was the first, then Destiny, which was excellent and had really good follow through for the aftermath, especially some of the Typhon Pact stories.

Ultimately, it all ends with Coda, a cataclysmic reset due to the Picard series being done.  But there’s a lot of good stuff long before you get to that point.

Also, in audio, Andrew Robinson recently did a reading of the Garak story he wrote, A Stitch In Time.

I’ve watched through most of s5 of TNG this week and it’s largely enjoyable. The episode with Kelsey Grammer was a bit disappointing though: having him credited at the start was misleading for how little he’s in it.

I really like Picard’s midlife crisis suede captain’s jacket. Especially as no-one else gets one. Starfleet uniform policy is weird.

Onto s6 of TNG and even as someone without any real nostalgia for TOS (although I suppose every SF fan has a base amount even if they don’t particularly care for it) the episode with Scotty is quite fun. Love the big “I used to work here” vibes of him annoying Geordi in Engineering.

Humans are really a bunch of frat guys going “Bro, check this shit out!” while successfully doing Jackass-level stuff WITHOUT getting hurt.

The Romulans flex and humans go “Do you even lift?” while kicking their asses.

Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites just stare and go “FUUUUCK”. Humans go to them and say, “Y’all think THAT was crazy? We gonna turn that shit to ELEVEN. Y’all want in?”

At that point, they realize they are better off working with these insane monkeys than trying to fight them.

I saw the first two episodes of Discovery season 5.

I had been racking my brain beforehand trying to remember where things were left in season 4. Turns out that since then we’ve had two seasons of Picard, two seasons of Strange New Worlds and two seasons of Lower Decks! Crazy.

I’ve been rather irritated with this show in the past but was pleasantly surprised with just how fun these two episodes were. The show plays so much better with Michael being in charge of the ship already, rather than wasting so much time on her having to convince her captain to go along with her plan. Shame they didn’t get to this set up sooner.

    Minor spoilers…

So the season is just going to be an extended version of The Chase from TNG? I still prefer the episodic approach to Star Trek but, hey, fair enough. That story was broad and crazy enough to suit Discovery pretty well. But who exactly was filming the footage from the TNG episode the characters used here?

Saru survived the “HE WAS JUST ONE DAY FROM RETIREMENT!” trope, good for him.

Is Fred dead? I guess it doesn’t matter too much as the show is ending but the actor did a fantastic job as a Soong synth and I’d like to see him again somewhere.

The new number one looks to be a welcome addition, in all his “Jonathan Banks in Breaking Bad” surliness. Sometimes all you need to quickly solve an emergency problem is someone to yell “hey, smart people, do something smart!”

I had been racking my brain beforehand trying to remember where things were left in season 4. Turns out that since then we’ve had two seasons of Picard, two seasons of Strange New Worlds and two seasons of Lower Decks! Crazy.

It’s because they had finished principal photography on the show when Paramount decided to cancel the show, and went through a round of rewrites and reshoots to give the show more of a conclusion – presumably ending with Discovery adrift in a nebula like in Calypso.

I also thought the episodes were fun romps and I hope they keep that energy and threat level, just once I’d like the threat to not be one capable to destroying all life in the galaxy

It’s Captain Michael the super hero show. But I do like the other captain who has been put out to pasture on the ship. He had a nice scene forcing the others to think outside the box. I would love for him to interact with Tig Notaro.  Dr. Kovich has some nice scenes too.

Whole setup reminds me of the Tom Baker “Key to Time” season.

Should be a nice sendoff of a season.  I hope so…

I just heard that John Trimble passed away earlier today. Along with his wife Bjo, they were a beating heart at the centre of early Trek fandom, and they organised the letter-writing campaign that got TOS renewed for series 3.

Simon Kinberg in Talks to Produce ‘Star Trek’ Movie Franchise for Paramount

“The project is said to be set decades before the events of the 2009 movie that was directed J.J. Abrams, likely around modern times. It is said to involve the creation of the Starfleet and humankind’s first contact with alien life.”

Discovery’s extended epilogue was like an additional episode.
An episode filled with it’s very own over-reaching sense of self-importance.
    Just, too sappy and meh.

The real episode was, okay. Could have been better, but took the safe route that any fanfic could’ve written.

    And that reveal?
    Would rather they left untouched.

I wasn’t a naysayer, but seasons 3,4, & 5 all could have and should have been better.
And the critiques of Michael Burnham and the way she’s written and portrayed can’t be ignored.
It’s like they either ignored the internet, or double-downed on it.
(Although that may have been to drastic a change, and led to the cancellation situation, which obviously took the writers by surprise).

Maybe I have ended up a naysayer after all.
If it leads to the rest of the franchise being better, then we have a bright side to look forward to.
    Hope they learned.

  • #119259

    Just, too sappy and meh.

So, pretty much like the whole show then.

You know, the main reason I quite that show was that it made me feel like Jonathon (*looks around* – Wait, how long has he been gone?!). It’s a horrible example of the well-intended politics taking over the writing to an extent that it quickly all became too painful to watch.

  • #119270

But it was nice to see Leoben again.
Time travel him to one of the other shows.

He can be in the Section 31 movie and take over from Michelle Yeoh when they move it to a series.

    Yes they can, and should.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #119376

Just to be clear, I’m referring to having the whole show revolve around her, and every decision she makes is the right one (everyone else be damned!).

When I kept hearing the critiques, I was starting to agree more as the show went on. Some just couldn’t get into the show because of that fact.

Trek shows work best as an ensemble cast, and everyone gets a chance to shine.
Discovery always was about Michael, and only her love interests and friends got some decent screen time.

I did love it for the first two seasons, but less so when they went to the future.
Just an opinion, but I wonder if it would’ve been better with that ensemble cast thing (which works so very well for Strange New Worlds).

  • #119379

The show’s pretty explicit about her not being right all the time, though.

1 user thanked author for this post.
  • #119420

I saw the season. It wasn’t discussed in depth here so I didn’t post much on it.

To the point of it being the Michael show: I get it that she was for the most part a Mary Sue, but then again
all the Star Trek shows revolve a lot on the captain’s arc. It’s nice for a change to see a black woman take
    center stage tbh.

The ending was a little strange. She gets to the boss character and it turns out that the place wasn’t even theirs.
The universe is about 14B years, and if the place preceded the billions old people Micheal saw…
The puzzle wasn’t that tough either. To get in, you just had to be clever and athletic enough.

I didn’t like Raynor at the start because of that avalanche, but he had a nice redemption arc, almost like not liking
    Shaw in Picard at first.

    Breen = Daft Punk 🤣

The episode was a flashback/origin. For me, it was just meh. I am having a hard time caring for any of these characters or the story. Everything just feels so bland.

The Star Wars universe really needs some sort of Children’s Protective Service. If you are an orphan (or even if you aren’t), you get the short end of everybody’s stick. Then again, an orphanage in SW will probably be an absolute gulag.

I love her, good casting overall, and it works very well on paper.
Hope it executes in a movie format.
Still say it should be a TV series, but I will be watching.

No one excited for the lower decks finale? The first part was amazing and some very old shippers are now very happy.

I was a bit back and forth on part 1.  Like it was very blatant fanservice but it played with it in some smart ways.  William Boimler being the one to be jaded about stuff was a nice touch for sure.  And the alternate Mariner was great.

I love the whole gag of Bradward becoming a good officer by growing the beard. Lovely touch.

Well, he did still scream and fall over a bunch of stuff.  And I love that they animated alternate takes in the trailers to hide his dodgy beard, the same way they hid the lieutenants’ pips last year.

What a show. Sorry to see it go, but it went out on top.

Yeah, it’s up there with TNG and DS9, and who could have seen that coming when they announced an animated comedy about the ensigns on a crappy starship?
