Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays have spoken and have taken a 2-0 lead in a best of 5.

    Yay!

So, left coast has the Seattle Mariners winning first playoff home game since 2001.

    East Coast decision?
With 3 minutes left to 8:00 (Pacific) we’ll immediately go to the lead story of the awesomeness of Toronto.
Then at 8:00 we repeat the same story of the AWESOMENESS OF TORONTO.

I get it, and go fuck yourself.
    All in same minute.

    Did you expect any less?

NY Mets fan here. The Yankees are taking on Toronto hitting at their best. While it is some fun seeing them possibly get swept, it doesn’t help the Mets cause. My team has work to do to restructure the team.

You are in Toronto, no? Must be nice. I am indifferent to the Yankees being eliminated. I focus more on the Mets, but I see the roster problems, the budget considerations, key players not getting any younger.

It will be quite a challenge to restructure the team overall. Both the Mets and Yankees.

No, I’m left coast (gateway to the Pacific) Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sometimes I’ll root for Toronto (not always), Trump being a bully has seen the country band together quite well (although I am rooting for Seattle as I grew up going on vacation down through Washington State and Oregon. Miss those days).

I feel for American distillers (U.S. booze sales dropped 85%) and American border towns, American tourist resorts.

But when that idiot is gone we can go back to being friendly nations?
    I hope.

Focusing only on yourself doesn’t work, and I hope the entire world learns from this.
Have to work together in good times and especially in bad times.

I also wonder how we got here at the same time.
How much damage can one man do?…

Seattle did the unthinkable and went into Toronto and won the first game of the American League Championship Series.

Lots in this town went in cheering Toronto, figuring they’re doing it.

Yet Seattle won, after making the previous round hard on themselves, just like they did all season.

    This is very interesting.
Seriously, Seattle finds it in themselves to put the boot on the throat and don’t stop. Thats the path.

The only team in baseball to have never nade it to the World Series is the Seattle Mariners.
Do not wish that on any fanbase.

    Go Seattle.

Now I go argue with everyone.
Oh wait, it’s a holiday (Canadian Thanksgiving).
    I can argue with booze!

Looking at the NFL standings, it might an off year for everybody
Baltimore and Miami are 1-5, Chiefs are at .500
No one looks that strong. The Eagles don’t look dominant.

Maybe some team will regroup and play strong the rest of the way. We’ll see

So Friday night Seattle actually had a grand slam.
In the coaching chess match I thought never, but almost like Toronto intent on shooting themselves in the foot.

Now Seattle takes a 3-2 series lead into Toronto.
“One Win Away” is the hardest win.
It’s also the same place where Toronto has yet to win.
Don’t think it’ll be easy, for either side.

Uhmm, I have no connection to the National League (Seattle, Toronto, Yankees, Red Sox, all American League teams), but this Brooklyn team, oh sorry, Los Angeles team, the Dodgers, is pretty fucking good and going to be hard to beat.

Not a fan at all, but honestly it has to be said.

Former Buccaneers All-Pro running back Doug Martin dies at 36 – CNN

Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died. He was 36.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time,” his family said in a statement to Fox Sports.

Martin was picked 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft after a standout career at Boise State. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie to earn a Pro Bowl berth. He had 1,402 yards rushing and six TDs in 2015 when he made the Pro Bowl and was first-team All-Pro.

Martin finished his career with 5,356 yards rushing and 30 TDs in six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders. He also had 148 catches for 1,207 yards and two scores.

The Buccaneers issued a statement, saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. … Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

Martin was selected one of the top 50 players in franchise history as part of the team’s 50 year anniversary celebration.

He is. In that last game, he struck out 10 in 6 innings and hit 3 HRs in the deep areas of the stadium.
He is the genuine article. He started his MLB career in 2018 with the Angels. He is both an ace pitcher and a power hitter.
There is a reason why the Dodgers paid 700M to get him (A structured contract of 2M/yr until 2034, then 68M/yr the next 10 years)
    He is the real deal.

It’s very dumb. A lot of the reason soccer betting scandals tend to happen at the lower levels is it’s not really worth doing for the top players earning $5-10m a year. They could take a kickback from a syndicate but when the risk is a lifetime ban from the sport they are going to be considerably worse off if caught and as you say, is $4.7m not enough?

  • #142443

I give the Blue Jays credit. They lost the long game, but bounced back and won the last two.
Looks like the Dodgers ended up more fatigued than Toronto.
I thought that LA would sweep and close it out at home but now they have to trek back to Toronto

Who knows? Maybe Yamamoto goes 8 innings tonight and pushes it to Game 7 OR… the Toronto crowd
excites Vlad, Bichette, and the rest to have a big game and they celebrate tonight on their home field.
    We will see.

  • #142445

Oh yeah, do not listen to the media, fans, relatives, wives, girlfriends, and anyone who says hi to you.

That bounce-back of the Blue Jays is the reason why we’re here.
They just have it, I’m convinced.

Just, there’s a reason why they play the games.
Ask the Seattle Mariners (last round) about a 3-2 lead.

    Fuck, ask 2011 Vancouver Canucks(NHL)
    The 2001 NYY.
    Atlanta 1991

What you can’t rattle off the top of your head, the internet will bring back some hateful hurtful memories (yet if that was your team, boo fucking yeah!)

    Throw basketball in the mix?
That seems like a sport you’re doomed to win game 5 and a 3-2 lead.

Yet, I’m going all in on Toronto.
    Feels good, feels right, and

    “We don’t need you!”
Well, the Toronto fans can be hardcore.
But Ohtani was almost a Blue Jay last off season
He’s having a fine career (won in 2024, won in money).

Arghh, I guess I’m rambling, cause I already said something about playing the games, yet planning on talking (something…).

    Okay hold on.
Seattle going to win, tying the LA Rams at 6-2.
The SF ’49ers are 6-3 (haven’t had bye week)

So the Dodgers won. Game 7 was intense though. Unlikely players like Miguel Rojas saved the day. And Yamamoto.

LA has class. But MLB allows them to structure annuity contracts like this one with Ohtani:

It’s a very backloaded contract, that helps avoid paying huge US taxes and doesn’t weigh down the team payroll budget so they can add more players. The guy is in his early 30s, makes 2M until he retires and heads back to Japan in his early 40s and then the balloon payments of 68M all those years. And LA already made back the 700M from all the marketing they did. All the best Asian players prefer the West Coast teams as they are a much closer plane ride than say NY and Philadelphia. I guess people will start calling them the Tokyo Dodgers soon. 🤣

How can the Mets compete? Who knows? Maybe tap into the Latin America talent more and have that as a talent pipeline.

Have you seen the Netflix documentary, “Who Killed the Montreal Expos?”. It’s pretty good.

So, yeah. Good on the differing opinions, even acting like you’re giving me the finger, and may believe what you’re saying (your master loves you and will protect you), I will take it all in.

So, first I will say, the “consortium of owners” doesn’t work if you think you have your percentage on the steering wheel.

You put in, and it’s all about the eventual sale and reap you rewards (or has no one noticed people crying poor with millions of losses and leaving town with a goddamned handsome profit?).

Then whenever you’re in the “new stadium stage” but government will not, then put forth a new plan where you buy the land and own, now with new revenue streams of parking lots on the northwest and southeast corners.

Having someone come in and be a savior? They want their way handed to them, or will force the issue (because of course that’s a part of the plan.

    And shame on Canada too.
“We don’t have that American family money”
Well, apparently there was a ton of people/families that look back and “well, we didn’t know short term loss could turn into major long term money maker”

    Montreal Expos = Washington Nationals

    Quebec Nordiques = Colorado Avalanche
Winnipeg Jets = Phoenix Coyotes (now Utah Mammoth).

    Vancouver Grizzlies = Memphis Grizzlies

Don’t know how the Seattle Supersonics went to Oklahoma.
But the NBA really wants back to Seattle, and has the love of Vegas, so thats the next two teams (heavily assumed).

“We feel bad about Vancouver and would love to put a team back there” is an invite for someone to help increase the price of Seattle and Vegas).

    What killed the Expos?
    Money.
    And stupid short term thinking.
    And inviting vampires in.

Always come back to “building a new stadium”
Why assume government will do it?
Turn the tables while hearts are emotional, and negotiate additional revenue streams that you own at cut rate tax prices.

Because government needs to realize what the franchise means to the city.

Bringing in other rich players for half your teams schedule?
They spend, and they spend downtown.
Vancouver is a known spot for a disproportional amount of “Rookie Dinners” (where a restaurant gets a ton of money from 23 people having dinner, drinks, and a whole cake for dessert, and the first year players pay).

And that asshole that paid $18 million for a 24% stake into the Expos, used his clause to buy out the other 76% (locked into low prices but unknown) and then sold 100% for $120 million.

I saw the Houston Oilers become the Tennessee Titans over new stadium demands. I then saw the NFL bend over backwards trying to give Los Angeles the new franchise and not Houston. LA kept telling them no, so they finally gave it to Houston because we agreed to build a new stadium.

Outsider looking in on the Expos, that ownership arrangement was doomed from the beginning. There was no way that was going to work out in the long term. It was like they didn’t even talk to any MLB owners at the time. It looked like they wanted to keep the ownership centered in Montreal, when they probably could have found a wealthy Quebecer to back the whole thing. Even later on, that was still an option.

Yeah, a stadium is a short-term loss that yields long-term gains. That would have led to a revitalization of the area and lifted a great many ships.

The Expos did have choices that could have been made to save the team, but everybody acted in the most ass way possible.

North Carolina loses to Duke, clinches losing record in Bill Belichick’s first season – NBC Sports

Bill Belichick will not go bowling.

North Carolina lost 32-25 to Duke today, falling to 4-7 on the season and clinching a losing record in the Tar Heels’ first season under head coach Bill Belichick.

That means North Carolina can’t be bowl eligible. The Tar Heels had gone to six straight bowl games under Belichick’s predecessor, Mack Brown, but this season they struggled to compete with major-conference opponents.

And they struggled today against their biggest rival — a rival so big that when Belichick was introduced as North Carolina’s head coach, he claimed his first words were “Beat Duke” because his father had been a North Carolina assistant coach when he was a young child.

In his first year as head coach at North Carolina, Belichick didn’t beat Duke, and he hasn’t won enough. His program has a lot of work to do, and after back-to-back losing seasons to end his tenure as head coach of the Patriots, Belichick now has three straight losing seasons on his record.

New York Jets Release Fanbase to Free Agency

In what is being hailed as the most compassionate move this season, the New York Jets announced this week they have released their fanbase to free agency: allowing Jets faithful to freely choose a more successful franchise to support.

“We believe all fans deserve a chance to be happy. Simply being born into the Jets fanbase should not prevent someone from experiencing the joys of winning,” said Jets GM Darren Mougey.

The announcement comes off the back of three consecutive “rebuilding” decades for the Jets and no sign of the scaffolding coming down anytime soon. “There’s an old saying,” said Mougey, “If you love something, set it free. The entire Jets organization believes we’ve put the good people of the tri-state area through enough, and from the bottom of our hearts, we wish all of them the best of luck with their new franchise.” Mougey closed his remarks by hoping Jets fans find a team that can provide the winning records, deep runs into the playoffs, and championship ring that they never will. “At the beginning of the season, every fan thinks ‘this is our year’ and with any luck, after today, that may actually be true for some former Jets fan.”

At publication, the entire Jets fanbase said they don’t plan on rushing the decision. Instead, taking the rest of the season to consider their options and savor the final disappointment before committing to a more successful franchise.

Dana White Can’t Believe Rabbits Still Getting Beneath Octagon Fence – The Onion

Pesky Critters Continue To Burrow Under Chain-Link Enclosure, Disrupting UFC Headline Bouts

LAS VEGAS—Shaking his head in frustration after staff pulled yet another wriggling cottontail from the canvas mat, UFC president Dana White expressed disbelief Friday that rabbits were still somehow managing to get beneath the Octagon fence. “We’ve tried everything—chicken wire, garlic spray, motion-triggered sprinklers—but the little bastards just keep scratching their way under there,” said White, gesturing to a UFC official attempting to lure out a pair of bunnies with a celery stick just moments before the start of a welterweight bout. “Every time we think we’ve sealed up all the gaps, nope—there’s another goddamn rabbit chewing on a cutman’s rag, or a pile of rabbit turds under [Kamaru] Usman’s stool. They’re cute, but man, they’re distracting. And they reproduce like crazy.” At press time, White was reportedly on the phone with a pest control company to see if they could “come out and spray some chemicals or put up an electric dog fence or something.”
