SFL ?

A lot of us have more time on our hands or are looking for something to take our minds off of the Shitshow 2020 has become. So I have offered to run a new SFL. Don’t know if I am being a Masochist or not but here goes.

SFL Prospectus
In this league you need to pick a team that is dead or has been remade. For instance, JL Detroit, Allred’s or Remender’s X Force, Stern’s Avengers, Wolfman/Perez Titans.

I will be commissioner.

Same rules as before apply. Do your best to convince people to vote for you. Creativity will be rewarded. Ask Todd about Ultron v Rocket.

Any Jeffersoning will lead to a loss for that week. If you don’t know who I am talking about, congratulations. He was the Trump of the SFL.

While it sounds fun, I really don’t have the time to participate to it.

Don- I think it’s a good idea to give it a go.

Maybe a more compact version than before which was pretty time consuming but I think that’s rather guided by the participants because nobody had to use all the images and banners and all that. I’d suggest maybe smaller teams of 4 to make voting quicker (if that makes sense I can’t remember much of how it worked apart from copy/paste and bolding out your winners).

Once you have decided though stick it in the Comics forum, creative is very quiet nowadays and I can see very few people clicking on it as a result. I’ll put a link to it on the Twitter feed.

I agree with gar that a more compact version would probably be the way to go. Less trading between teamds perhaps, and perhaps some ‘event-based’ weeks but not every week, unless you feel you have the time… Just to not make it too complicated for you or the participants.

If you need help with keeping score, I volunteer to help you. I only work a couple of days a week for a couple of months and onward.

If drafting is already open, prepare for The Authority playing dirty on my side.

Yeah I mean if I’m honest I enjoyed some of the previous ones but they did drag on forever and my patience didn’t always drag on with it.

We’re a smaller group now anyway though so that may automatically solve that issue.

Be sure to let Jim O’Hara know.

That should send a cold shudder down his spine.

  • #39070

This thread was just to gauge interest. Do we have enough people to field a league? I have no plans other than the team idea atm. I ran a week or two back in the day so I know how to keep track of the scores. If you want to move the thread to Comics Be my guest because i don’t know how.

Anders I was not planning on allowing any trades. I’d like to keep teams coherent. i.e. no Crazy Jane on the Avengers. If it is only a few weeks, i’m not sure about theme weeks but again we will see how much interest is generated and go from there. If we have a longer season I will definitely offer opportunities to freshen up your team.

Todd, I still have Jim’s # but I believe he is busier than you so thats a longshot.

I’d recommend setting up a maximum amount of teams, like 10 or 12 or something, and then just letting the league go on as long as it have to for all teams to face each other. And if it’s just, say, six teams that would mean five weeks, plus perhaps some event or whatever.

  • #39078

If you want to move the thread to Comics Be my guest because i don’t know how.

It’s fine. We can leave the discussion here for now on how to do it. For when you may actually launch it start a new thread in comics. We get around 27-30 signed on users every day here, some won’t be interested so look at maybe 10 teams.

  • #39079

I think you are a bit optimistic about the number of the teams. If Gar wants to publicize it on Twitter to get people onto the site maybe but right now it has been 4 hours and you are the only one to pick a team. I probably should have put this thread on Comics but what I wanted was people to get creative about their teams so I created it here.

OK, If you want 10 teams, I was looking at 9 players per team so we can get a winner(8 was my original idea but too many ties might result).

If we have 10 teams, that means 9 weeks so that 90 players and 81 games. I can do more teams but I probably use divisions and then not every body would play each other.

Friendly suggestion: You may want to scale that back. Maybe three or five characters per team, playing for about a month or so. Have something with a low bar for entry and commitment. Assuming it proves successful, you can scale up for the next series.

I remember doing a relatively quick Battle Royale back in the day where everyone picked one character. You may want to consider that as an option.

I think that going to big right off might scare away potential participants, especially those who never played.

Have your undercard fight before the main event. ;)

4 hours is not long here in a poorly frequented section over many time zones. I think you can get 10, I’ll join in, but tend to agree with Todd let’s start short and sweet and see how it goes. 5 is probably better than 9.

Ok, thanks for the input. this is what I wanted. people giving me constructive criticism. next question if we are going with 3, should I prevent people from taking the big 3 from DC(Bats, WW, Supes) or Marvel(Cap, IM, and Thor). I would say yes because those groupings are still active and do not meet the criteria of inactive teams.

Make a list of characters/powers that are excluded from the roster. Like Dr. Manhattan.

I would definitely make certain “god” level characters and their alternate reality counterparts forbidden. (“Well if I can’t have Superman, I’ll take Kingdom Come Superman!”) Create a “no-fly” list of characters that cannot be used.

You may also want to limit it to the comic book version, not any incarnation from TV, movies, or other media. Maybe add that they must have made a minimum amount of appearances so some random character that appeared once but was super-powerful can’t be used.

    No God level characters check
Would you rather have one on one battles or one team battle where the characters can work together?

  • #39128

One on one. It forces the combatant team owners to focus on the same characters in respect to each other, and makes it harder to try to shift the discussion.

It’d be up to you (or the rules, if the teams were set up so that owners had to fill their roster by predetermined roles) to decide who fights who every week.

Btw, I also think 5 members per team is more manageable than 9. Quality discussion over quantity discussion. ;)

I think Anders is right about going the one on one route.

If you wanted to, you could have a week where it is team vs team. Or you could save team vs team for the playoffs and finals. At that point, all the one on one fights should have theoretically taken place. Team vs team in the playoffs changes the dynamic and kicks the game up a notch.

I’ll throw this idea out there for discussion: In the finals, the last two teams can add one character to their roster from a team that didn’t make the playoffs. If you are going to divide the teams into “conferences” (an East vs West so to speak), they can only pick from their conference. I remember Jim throwing some twists in the SFL here and there. You may want to do that but as this is a small scale reboot, you may want to do that very sparingly.

In regards to the number of characters per team, I think three (3) would be a manageable amount for the reboot. We have to remember that we have people joining in who may never have done this before and it would be a way to ease into the role of Commissioner for Don. I would keep this as simple as possible with a sparingly used twist to keep everyone on their toes and add some spice to the game.

Apologies, it’s been a busy couple of days for me so I missed your thread.

I’m ready to give it a go, though I can’t promise I can put in the amount of work every week that I used to.

My team of choice has been “remade” multiple times, if that’s going to be your theme :yahoo:

I think 26 members per team is just about perfect  :-)

You’re only saying that because you’re such a huge fan of the So Solid Crew.
