Server Move

As referenced in another thread I am moving to a new offer from my hosting provider. They’ll move us to a new server as part of that.

Kindly be advised that we slot in the account migration dated 27 July 2023 at 12 AM.
Malaysia is at GMT/UTC +8 hours. Expect an outage on the site for a couple of hours as they shift the files to a new server.

I, for one, welcome our new server overlord.

    Yeah, thanks, Gar!

  • #111193

I appreciate the downtime being schedules for when I’ll be out gaming

  • #111195

They seem to have done it within 58 minutes, very efficient and so far the site looks okay to me.

Did everything just taste purple for a second?

  • #111201

Hmm, works good on Chrome but Samsung’s browser doesn’t like it. What am I missing on that?

  • #111205

The board seems to have lost two posts I did.

  • #111208

Don’t seem to be able to post pics.

That’s what I was getting last night on Samsung but this morning it seems to like it once more. Maybe it just has to catch-up?

  • #111216

Might have to clear your cookies for the site in your browser. Until I did that just now I got a graphicless text page and 403 errors. Easy solution.

I’m getting the 403 error when I try and post a hotlinked image, not even uploading one.

    Yeah me too.

    I’m getting the error, too.

  • #111229

Yeah looks like something broke with images. I’ll look into it tomorrow, in the meantime use attachments if they are working fine.

I was able to access through Edge earlier and n my laptop but not now. I am getting the 403 error.

  • #111234

There must be a Spikd link detector in the new server.

  • #111235

Yesterday was fine, as was early this morning.

But now it does not like Samsung Internet Browser, even if I clean the cookies it won’t let me click on anything or let me log in.
Everything results in a 403 error message.

    Chrome is fine.

I was able to access through Edge earlier and n my laptop but not now. I am getting the 403 error.

    And now it’s working.

  • #111240

Possibly linked to this – or not – Google is doing the “your clock is ahead” error, despite my clearing cache and cookies and using auto date and timezone.

    Tried a restart and nope.

Anyone know any other fix for this?

  • #111245

I’m getting the 403 message on Edge. Safari is letting me in, though.

  • #111262

Yesterday I could not get on via my laptop at home (got the dreaded 403); but the laptop has a remote link to my office computer, and I was able to log onto The Carrier that way.

Then, when I came in to the office this morning and used my Google link to log on, I got the 403 message again. So rather than use the shortcut, I typed the address “thecarrier.net/forums” and got right on.

Weird. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

I suspect moving to new server changed DNS settings and when that happens it takes around 48 hours to propagate over every DNS server around the world. Something I’ve seen before with a server move on a company site and it means for that while you could get 403/404 messages randomly depending which DNS server your browser connects to.

It should clear up completely in the next day.

  • #111282

To emphasise this I lost all access just now to 403 errors, works on my mobile though and now via picking ‘private browsing’ (which doesn’t use cookies). Tech support saying it’ll work through with time as the DNS propagates across all servers. So be patient, clear caches, and then report if the errors persist after a day or two more.

2 users thanked author for this post.
  • #111283

Google the DNS flush command as well, that can help, just refreshes all your settings. DNS is basically the method of converting written web addresses to IP numbers. Change your IP address and it can temporarily fail until all servers are propagated with the change.

Thanks again for your efforts, Gar. Have a great weekend!

  • #111339

I’m still getting 403 errors and a text only main page. I’ve flushed my DNS and I’m having to continually clear cookies to get the site to load any topics.

  • #111341

Yeah, same for me. Mobile phone (Android) using either Samsung Internet Browser or Google Chrome, both wouldn’t let me on the site. Cleared cookies multiple times on both to no avail, just now able to get through.

  • #111345

I’m able to get it on my work computer pretty consistently, but with my laptop at home it’s hit-or-miss. Strange, since I’m using Google on both computers.

  • #111347

It is very sketchy. Earlier today all I got was 403 errors and now it’s all fine. That inconsistency in function is ironically consistent with an IP address move but if it carries on for the next day or two I will open a new tech support ticket.

It wouldn’t be as funny without the 403 screen displaying Lite Speed Technologies. Huh, is it? Is it really?

Yeah, that reflects my experience as well. Just keep giving it time to settle down.

  • #111503

I can’t do anything on my desktop now, I’m getting 403ed for everything and it got worse with my last clearance of cookies. I keep getting it when trying to post (across all devices) too, which is frustrating.

  • #111508

I can’t access through Safari on on iPhone at the moment. I can from my work laptop at the moment.

  • #111521

I don’t think this is really getting better. It’s on and off, sometimes it works, sometimes I get the 403 error.

  • #111528

Using a different browser worked for me just then.

    Chrome, error 403.

Edge, much as it pains me to say, smooth sailing.

  • #111570

Thanks guys, I’ve been away a couple of days so just catching up. The issues seem to be gone for me but looks like it is lingering for some.

I still think it is just DNS relates so things like clearing cache, using private browsing etc should re-adjust to the new address. If anything is persistent I can follow up with the hosting company.

  • #111579

In Safari, the forum list page loads fine and to the other pages. For some reason, it logged me out. When I try to log in, I get the 403 error. I cleared the cache for this website and it seems to work for now.

  • #111583

And then Safari stopped working and I had to clear the information again.

Edge on my work computer is not working now (it was earlier), even after I cleared caches.

    This is so frustrating.

I have spoken to the hosting company again, the random effects and no downtime for some says it is still lingering DNS problems with the server move. We have 100% server uptime since the shift.

This article may help supply some ways to clear it up:

The site is barely usable for me at the moment. 403 errors everywhere, especially on wifi. 4G works from time to time, but if I click on more than a couple of links it crashes on me again. Just making you aware, Gar. Hopefully it gets sorted over the next week or so.

  • #111705

Honestly it is hard to tell.

The 404 error is site not found. That was because the server crashed, which is now fixed.

403 errors are DNS based which is basically the process of translating a written web address into an IP address of a server. When we changed earlier in the month those errors are expected as browsers etc store that info to make page loading faster but should clear after 3-4 days. Typing the address versus bookmarks can also help.

If I raise them as a ticket the reply just comes back to clear browsing data/cache, use private browsing (which bypasses a lot of stored data) but in practice it doesn’t seem to be working as clearly as that.

That makes some sense of why Todd can view on one browser and not another as how they used stored DNS shortcuts may be different. I am kind of holding on that this will still clear with time but if 403’s persist please send me details of the time and browser used.

  • #111706

Might be a bit difficult to give you date and time on 403 error effect, as it really does come and go, within Samsung internet, which is what I’m finding baffling.

I’m assuming that it uses the same info but is somehow getting different results at different times. Which doesn’t match up well to what you’ve laid out.

Problem is, if it comes up, it blocks posting and / or view of a forum. Which stops me getting the info to you.

Trying to make this read as not throwing stuff at you Gar, as you’re in the middle of it all too.

  • #111707

So I just deleted cookies on Opera, refreshed the page and got a 403 when I tried to log back in. Time about 18:47 GMT, public IP is 95.45.56.60

  • #111708

Actually belay that, do have a rough estimate for the last 403.

    – Samsung internet on mobile

    – 6.50pm – no good, 403

    – Now, 7.05pm – back in business.

Maybe it is settling down, that’s a shorter span than before.

  • #111709

This morning, I could not access the website from my work laptop using Edge (403 error) but now I can.

  • #111714

Aside from this past weekend when I kept getting the 404 message (which, as Gar explained, was due to a server crash), I think I’ve been able to log in at one time or another every day. I’m okay with that, but it seems like there are fewer-than-usual new posts ever since the switch, which is kind of sad.

  • #111723

That’ll probably be the work of the 403 one as it can come up for the addition of new posts.

Sometimes it blocks view of the entire forum, specific sub-forum or stops a post – it’s all very odd and random.

  • #111725

Yesterday about 3:00 pm, I could not access via Edge on my work laptop, nor Safari.

At the moment, I can get to the board with both.

  • #111727

And right now I’m getting a 403 error on Safari.

  • #111770

I am finally back in with both Safari and Edge after being 403ed since yesterday.

  • #111795

I’ve but 403ed since I posted yesterday. I’m in with Safari at the moment but not sure how long it’ll last. 😢

  • #111826

My access since the server move has been intermittent – logged in, logged out, after clearing cache, and trying to use incognito mode I keep getting 403. All Chrome for Android. Latest seems to match in with Todd’s timings above.

  • #111827

Yeah it is intermittent, happened to me last night just before I went to bed after being fine.

I have a tech looking into it, please do me a favour and if it happens again give me the time in GMT/UTC so they can check logs.

  • #111828

I was getting 403 errors in Opera and Chrome for the last hour. 21:20 or so to 22:30 GMT
