I had a friend at school who was petrified of stuffed animals. Big or small.

Which was unfortunate as he was a big history buff and used to like to come along to the trips of the historical society my mother was chairman of. That meant visiting a lot of stately homes packed with stuffed animals. He’d ask me to go in first to check each room and if it has any taxidermy in it he’d close his eyes and ask me to lead him past them. 😂

Oh, I thought you meant stuffed animals as in teddy bears and plush toys rather than taxidermy. I did wonder why that was an issue for a history buff.

I thought you meant like teddy bears

I could see teddy bears and other plush toys becoming a source of fear in the same way clowns have seemed to be more scary than friendly today. The trend started a little bit with things like Gremlins and Chucky but even the Muppets could be creepy at times. Also, the number of scary Teddy Bear images out there seems to be growing each decade.

I wonder if that is a specifically identified psychological thing of some kind. The desecration of childhood totems.

And I think it may be a form of megalophobia?

I think I have a type of that, I have a fear of standing close to high buildings. I call it a kind of reverse fear of heights, I kind of fear being sucked up into the air. Not realistic I know, but I get queezy and wobbly on my legs when I stand next to a skyscraper. Weird thing too is that it happened later in my life, I was in New York in 2000 and I stood next to the WTC with no problem.

Yes I think there is something in our culture that like to pervert things to its opposite.

I get that in a mild way. Looking up at the underside of a big bridge bothers me particularly. I’m fine walking across a high bridge but somehow nervous when I walk under them, there’s no logical sense to it.

I made a Bill & Ted themed crossword puzzle. It’s not great or anything, but it might be a couple of minutes of fun. If you’re a fan. Of Bill and Ted. Or crossword puzzles. Or both. Like me.

Lorcan has tested it out and completed the puzzle in less than two minutes. The difficulty is scaling from easy to impossible based on your knowledge of the films.

edit: That link embeds really fucky to me so here is a copy-pasteable link:

Thanks @christian for that posting. I believe I do have a form of megalophobia. I also read that link. I did not go to the second link as that might trigger me.

The treatments highlighted were cognitive behavioral and exposure therapy to condition or get yourself used to it. I will try it not by pushing myself into the deepest part of the pool, but gradually seeing what I can tolerate.

Interestingly, there are pics on Google of lifelike images of Homer Simpson, the fat Family Guy character, and this giant Sponge Bob figure. They are creepy if you can’t take it.

Funny, I can watch the creepiest Twilight Zone episodes (The Dummy, The Doll, To Serve Man. etc. ) all day but this gets to me….

    Go figure.

As for this Billionaire Space Race, I guess it continues to raise the moral questions or issues of having a great resource or power.

Like: If you had a superpower like a Superman or FF, or Dr. Manhattan, would you use it to help humanity and solve problems like world hunger, cancer, start and support a movement against a social injustice and/or would you just indulge yourself to your heart’s pursuits or dreams?

Since superpowers like that are a fantasy, suppose you were a multibillionaire instead?

Some billionaires have done both In being charitable and indulgent, but the criics who say that their wealth is obscene assert that they should do a LOT more to help others.

    It never ends…

    Two things:

I’ve been watching some YouTube videos of David Blaine over the years and his magic tricks with all these celebrities (even Bush when he was President and Steven Hawking when he was alive). The tricks are amazing and the reaction is everybody freaks out.(Harrison Ford was so spooked and in tears he told Blaine “Get the fuck out of my house!)” But it is what it is: Entertaining trick to dazzle you for a minute and really go no further with it. Anyway here is the link of the listing. (Don’t spend too much time.):

GB News in crisis as exec quits and presenter is pulled for ‘taking the knee’

There’s just something so perfectly poetic about GB News – a channel set up as a rightwing bastion against “cancel culture” – being forced to cancel one of its own presenters after the channel was cancelled by its own viewers for not cancelling him quickly enough.

Apparently Simon McCoy was left having to describe funny pictures of animals at some point recently, when they wouldn’t show up on screen, which feels like poetic justice for the guy who used to get all eye-rolly during the feel good fluff stories like surfing dogs when on the BBC.

I’ve gotten it stuck in my head to make new words up by taking existing word and removing prefixes that aren’t really there.

Example: The opposite of undermined is, obviously, dermined. Same goes for unilateral – ilateral.

If a genie offered you a choice between a short but very happy, fulfilling life (as you define it, but not one of incredible wealth and power) but you’d die in a few months or the guarantee of a very, very unnaturally long (centuries even) but also very dreary (not painful or miserable, but boring and disappointing) life, which would you choose? Do you think most people would choose a short life with happiness or prefer a long life even if happiness was not really an option?

  • #70042

@anders i think you may need a brush up on your English. those two words do have prefixes. Under-mined and uni-lateral.

afa the question about life length goes, can you guarantee that a life can stay boring and dismal? Happy and short would be my choice anyways. less waiting around.

Hey, I use Mach 3 as well! I get my refill blades at Costco (one of those Big Box stores) where the price is much much lower than I would pay at a pharmacy/beauty products store like CVS or Walgreens.

I remember reading an article a couple years back that noted that two of the most shoplifted items in stores like that are razor blades and deodorant. So of course now if you go to a CVS in Manhattan, the razor blades and deodorant are locked in a case and you have to get an employee to unlock it for you. But condoms you can grab right off the shelf.

For some people it is a passion. That’s why Stan Lee had to invent the No-Prize to “reward” readers every time they pointed out one of his continuity errors (like suddenly calling Bruce Banner “Bob Banner”).

The videos that I find weird are the “explainers”. Things like “This is what happened to Gandalf…”. Look, we know what happened to Gandalf, it was right there on the screen. Anyone who doesn’t understand the movie probably also doesn’t care enough to watch a 90-minutes video explaining it

    Mach 3 MoFo’s unite!

Yeah, it’s cheaper from the box stores, and then I pounce on a sale. Still have a bunch in a drawer and they have to be from 2019.

I tend to re-use them to the max (dad is Scottish after all…), and I used to go 2 days between (better on my skin than daily) but during the Pandemic I started going 4 days or longer between shaves. Once masks were mandatory it became every 7 days (Sunday).

Now I guess I’m every Wednesday and Sunday. Kinda nice not being a slave to it, but I’ll probably get back to normal by end of year.

Yeah but let’s be honest, still a ripoff.

It’s a model like inkjet printers where they sell you the hardware cheap and the refills much much more. I’ve worked in supply chain in Asia, specifically China. I know how little any of this shit takes to make.

We got the specifics for $190 sports shoes sold from Nike. $1.50.

These ‘Mach 3’ refills are clearly ‘night work’ where they work overtime to create illegal versions using the same factory and materials. Selling to me at at what is effectively $1 they are making a profit.

    OK…

I went to three stores just now that did not have what I wanted. So, I reluctantly went to Amazon and ordered it. Why didn’t I go there in the first place? Well…

I don’t like giving them so much business. They undercut and drove out the brick and mortar competition. Covid did them way too many favors. Bezos paid $37B in divorce money, and earned another $72B afterwards in a matter of months. Rumor and reports have it that you and I respectively pay more in taxes than Bezos. And he goes on this billionaire joy ride to space and says that the Amazon workers take credit for paying for the ride. Bezos is non union to the workers, no real covid protection for them, bad worker conditions at the warehouses… Too much? I will stop.

I remember Microsoft. Windows was the operating system, but most of the computer specialists and comp sci students I met said that for all the resources they had, it could have been so much better in efficiency, and not so bloated. Plus, Microsoft undercut and drove out the competition so there was no one else on the field to push them to raise their game. As they got richer, Gates was more despised and on and on.

How times have changed. Bezos is now where Gates used to be…

I have something else that is odd: a very strong aversion of things that are slanting or at odd angles. I can’t stand things like books that have cursive script on the cover or the spine or wine bottles with cursive script. Also when I went to Italy I avoided Pisa because of the leaning tower.

Are they doing that flight-operator thing of changing prices based on past visits? Have you tried clearing your cookies Martin?

It’s not cookie based, but the price has been fluctuating between £29 and £31. It was £29 the other day and I signed up for their newsletter (which had a 10% off voucher). Within an hour of that I got an email (which I didn’t read til today) with targeted advertising and it was £31. Checked in a different browser and the same price but also checked on my phone, using mobile data not wi-fi, and it was £29. Turned my wi-fi on and it refreshed itself and went to £31. I asked people on Twitter to check as well and Steve got £29. I went back on the site this afternoon on my desktop again and got £29, but it went up as I was going through the order process.

So I don’t know what’s going on. I thought maybe it was a shady IP-logging price change tactic, as you said with the airlines (to make the 10% off voucher moot), but it seems more variable than that. I asked the company an hour or so ago and they’re saying £31 is the correct price and they don’t know why it would be showing as £29, that it was raised from £29 two weeks ago but the price change seemingly hasn’t been updated on all their servers so

first of all, I am not a psychotherapist specializing in overcoming phobia but that really is the key. A gradual contact and conditioning of what gives you that phobia. I heard this once for a phobia regarding fear of elevators: You first imagine yourself in there and, after a while, you step in one for a floor, then gradually, taking “baby steps” you progress and in time you can get on an elevator regularly like everyone else.

One thing I also heard is the external object is not even trying to “hypnotize” you saying “Fear me!” It is the feelings within yourself that one way or another that is causing your phobia.

I met a bloke in the pub last night who tried to convince me he was a big pop star in the 80s. I didn’t believe him, but he was adamant.

Too bad he did not realize he was talking to someone who’s pop culture stopped in 1979

    The more skilled player.

The mind reader will see what his opponent is going to do, but if he is a poor player he won’t know how to counter it.

The future seer will also see what his opponent is going to do, but if he is a poor player he won’t know how to counter it (though he will see himself failing to counter it).

So it comes down to who is the most skilled player.

Surely the mind reader will also be able to see the future if they can read their opponent’s mind.

Also, the puzzle doesn’t say that they are playing against each other, so maybe they both win.

The neighbor’s cat is over-grooming, which is causing a bald spot on his back. Now he has to stay inside and wear a little sweater, she thinks it’s maybe some allergy for a plant outside which caused itching that makes him lick that spot on his back. I can see him sitting inside and it looks so sad. The neighbor is out to work today.

Oops! For some reason I thought it was first letter of last name.

So I’m Claw Bad? Sounds like an ’80’s cliched villian wannabe.
Actually almost fits now that I’ve typed it.

My son’s cat (who we’re currently babysitting for a couple weeks) has a habit of licking his stomach when he’s stressed, but we have a spray that we are supposed to apply to his belly if he does that — I guess the spray tastes unpleasant but is otherwise harmless. So far we haven’t had to use it. It’s always a bit of a shock to learn that animals have emotional and mental issues too.

Yes I read that it can be caused by mental issues. Poor guy. I miss him, I love when he is outside and walks into my house when I have my balcony door open.

    Ok…

I posted upthread about the magician David Blaine shocking celebrities (especially Harrison Ford) with his tricks.

This video and (and subscription section) is about someone you would least expect to break out in another language speaking so fluently and the reaction and shock of people.

    Fwiw…

There is this young Russian woman who is a (I swear) such a dead ringer for Scarlett Johansson. She is of course milking it all on social media by cosplaying as Black Widow on Tiktok, some Facebook, etc.

I fact, here she with her friend both doing cosplay:
