James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman?
James Earl Jones, he’s the best and I’m not only saying that because we’re related.
Sinead O’Connor, who’s son recently died, has posted a suicide note on Twitter. I hope someone can intervene in time.
It appears that someone already has, thankfully.
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I am with cops now on way to hospital. I’m sorry I upset everyone. I am lost without my kid and I hate myself. Hospital will help a while. But I’m going to find Shane. This is just a delay

Good to hear. It is hard though, I know as a parent I couldn’t imagine anything worse than outliving your kids.
She’s clearly still in that frame of mind but hopefully intervention can gradually give her some new motivation.
She’s clearly always been troubled but I like Sinead, she’s a great artist and thinks differently, and would like her to get some solace. I was a fan before her cover of Nothing Compares 2U, my music video station used to show this is a lot which is a great song.

Yeah, it’s the nightmare of nightmares. I don’t think I’d be able to go on, either.
So… Is Die Hard a Xmas movie?
Is Back to the Future a sci fi movie?
——————————————-
SNL did a parody of TikTok the other weekend.
TikTok is getting so popular with their video snippets that now Instagram has its own snippet section called Instagram Reels.
It is all about these viral challenges, sexy dances, lip synching… It is all these young cute girls (and guys) wanting to market themselves and their looks all for the Male Gaze. Instagram, YouTube, TikTok.. What has social media become? Another medium for pop culture and self promotion.
So… Is Die Hard a Xmas movie?
You should start asking people this around Christmas, it could really catch on.
Is Back to the Future a sci fi movie?
No I believe it’s a documentary.
And political propaganda.
You go on social media much Arjan?
In all fairness, Facebook is responsible for the genocide in Myanmar:
Also, it is reported that Russian hackers used Facebook and other mediums to troll on politics and further drive the wedge between the conservatives and the “woke” in the election year of 2016. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are still doing it.
And Tr*mp used Twitter ad infinitum and it was used for Jan 6…
There is the media and the use of it for good and bad.

Actually, TikTok does have its critical thinkers with their video snippets providing social commentary on sociology, race, politics, current events, pop culture, and so on. That was surprising when I first came across it. I thought TikTok was just mindless entertainment.
With the girls dancing/twerking stuff that teases a person, after a while it can be an addiction. It is best to take a clean break from it. Know yourself and your tendencies.

That’s kinda what I meant with political propaganda… ;)

Social commentary is not the same as political propaganda.
In TikTok, one person for example makes a video, and then someone else follow up and makes rebuttal video of sorts and that back and forth is more of a debate than anything.

tiktok videos are at most 60 seconds long now, and it used to be 15 seconds. Seems barely enough time to do a few slogans, certainly not enough to explain complex issues.
On social media you often get random vloggers to repeat certain talking points that are fed to them by educational institutions or other influential cultural forces, or even directly by political agents. Say the CIA or some other agency pays an influential vlogger to repeat some stuff that furthers their interests while making it appear this person made these statements completely independently, so it doesn’t look like propaganda. PragerU on youtube is perhaps the most obvious example, they even revealed a while back their director was a Mossad operative.
But often it isn’t obvious at all. You know the Chinese Communist Party controls tiktok, right? I stumbled onto a youtube rabbit hole a while back of travel vloggers who were paid by the CCP to travel to Xinjiang to walk around and say stuff like “wow everything looks so nice and modern here and peaceful and I spoke to Uyghurs who said they weren’t abused at all.” Like wise the CCP has an interest in doing stories that paint the US in a bad light.
I think this mechanism works on the right as well as the left. You have the Koch brothers and someone like Dave Rubin, and I think some in the “intellectual dark web” that blew up on social media shortly before the 2016 election and which includes Jordan Peterson and some other weirdos, are financially supported by Peter Thiel who is the boss of Eric Weinstein, the buffoon who came up with the term intellectual dark web. These all have a libertarian or “ancap” bent.
Do you go on TikTok?
It’s not just tictoc really, this kind of thing happens on all social media.

The whole youtuber scene is full of paid-but-intransparent advertising, really. I am not surprised at all that this kind of political manipulation is a part of that, as well.
On a similar note: German right-wing activist (and former bestselling writer of the Felidae cat crime novels) Akif Pirinci has just been sentenced to paying 6000€ to Luisa Neubauer, a popular young German climate activist, because he wrote in a comment on a picture posted of her (not by her, a third party posted her picture): “I’d fuck her, even if I had to listen to hours of climate crap afterwards.”

How stupid of him, he should have known it is only OK to insult right wing figures. ;)
Not gonna lie, I’d fuck her too… =P
Also, yeah a 6000 euros fine for that is so absolutely ridiculous it actually sounds like BS… but something tells me it’s not… u_u
Do you go on TikTok?
I went on tiktok a few times to see what’s up but it seems to lack a search function which means you can just see the videos the algorithm chooses for you. I only got tiktok dances, stupid jokes etc. How do you get to the “social commentary”?

I think a criminal punishment would be justified if there is a rape threat in there, but there isn’t, he just says he would have sex with her. It is a bit insulting but yeah I agree a 6000 euro fine is ridiculous.
I think you recently also had someone in Germany sentenced to pay a fine for making fun of the looks of a transgender politician. Some people you can joke about, others not.
How stupid of him, he should have known it is only OK to insult right wing figures. ;)
Yes, because the issue is their politics and not the misogyny. Yup yup yup.
I think you recently also had someone in Germany sentenced to pay a fine for making fun of the looks of a transgender politician. Some people you can joke about, others not.
Again, the problem isn’t who you’re making fun of, it’s what you’re making fun of them for. I suspect you wouldn’t be particularly happy if people made fun of you for your mental health issues, would you?
I suspect you wouldn’t be particularly happy if people made fun of you for your mental health issues, would you?
Not happy no, but I wouldn’t want them prosecuted for it.

Maybe you’d feel differently about that last part if you were a public figure. Especially if you were talking about what you felt were important issues and the response was just to mock you for your mental health issues first.
And let’s be clear here, that guy made fun of the climate activist with the full expectation that he’d get in trouble for it so he could cause a controversy and piss on about how he’s being silenced just because he’s right wing, even though that’s never the case when you drill down into it.
Maybe you’d feel differently about that last part if you were a public figure. Especially if you were talking about what you felt were important issues and the response was just to mock you for your mental health issues first.
Why? Say someone on the street makes fun of me when I have a breakdown in public. He says “Hey act normal you lunatic.” It wouldn’t be funny, it would be pretty mean, but I wouldn’t want them prosecuted. I don’t think public figures are entitled to be free of mockery either, if anything being a public figure should come with having thicker skin.

Because you’re putting yourself out there to try and make a difference in the world and some dickhead saying “eh you’re just crazy” is going to be incredibly demoralising. Like if the hypothetical guy took a video of you, made fun of you and posted it online and it went viral.

Fair enough, I think there is a point where just random insults becomes targeted harrasment and I agree that can be prosecuted.
I went on tiktok a few times to see what’s up but it seems to lack a search function which means you can just see the videos the algorithm chooses for you. I only got tiktok dances, stupid jokes etc. How do you get to the “social commentary”?
You go to the search engine at the top and type a topic and you will get a listing. Usually I choose the hashtag which is like an umbrella and it gives you all the video snippets.
I agree on TikTok that the young go for the girls in bikinis dancing/twerking (funny how quick they get over 100M followers).
Instagram is mostly about young aspiring models posing in swimsuits, looking to be discovered for a modeling gig, or to have a star athlete or billionaire mogul direct message them for a date, etc. But it is all about marketing your looks, even when it comes down to Photoshop pictures (touch up on figure flaws) and a special filter to do away with facial wrinkles and so on. There is even a private “Only Fans” section to see even more risque pictures provided you pay a monthly subscription. Also on Instagram, when you get over 100M followers, you get branded an “influencer” and companies will sponsor you as long as you promote their products. Quite an easy way to reach 100M. Sex sells, and capitalism at its finest.
I am none too crazy about them, but the Kardashians are pretty much the first family to use the social media platform to promote themselves and go further than just the leaked sex tape. Many are studying how they did it and try to mimic their strategy.
Getting back to you @arjandirkse , social media can be put to both a good and bad use, especially in reaching the masses. It is what you make it to be.
To be honest… It is all really The New Pornography. Overseas from me, I believe it is called “lad mag” content, here in the States it used to be “booty” pictures now it is called “thirst trap” pictures. In the newsfeed it is all “clickbait” material ie. Here is a link to see Megan Fox or some other young female celeb at the beach…
I think a criminal punishment would be justified if there is a rape threat in there, but there isn’t, he just says he would have sex with her. It is a bit insulting but yeah I agree a 6000 euro fine is ridiculous.
Female politicians have been trying to fight online insults and threat unsuccessfully for years now – for example, another Green politician, Renate Künast, sued people for sexist insults and, yes, even calls to rape her, and didn’t get anywhere with her lawsuits. She only recently was finally successful in court with her lawsuits. I think that and the Neubauer decision shows a bit of a change in our how those laws are applied here, and I am glad to see it.
The fact is, you can be sued for insulting people in Germany – theoretically even for giving someone the finger – and applying that to online behaviour is long overdue.
You go to the search engine at the top and type a topic and you will get a listing. Usually I choose the hashtag which is like an umbrella and it gives you all the video snippets.
I think the search engine is only available on mobile. I don’t have a smartphone, I looked up tiktok on my laptop and there is no search engine, at least not for content, you can only search for user accounts.
The fact is, you can be sued for insulting people in Germany – theoretically even for giving someone the finger – and applying that to online behaviour is long overdue.
However I think you have to be able to prove some kind of ongoing campaign of harassment or a threat or defamation. Just an insult here and there should not be prosecutable. Imagine if someone like Trump would be able to sue everybody that insulted him.
(I think we have a similar law but it is hardly ever used.)

Jesus wept… talk about first world problems… u_u
Yes, because the issue is their politics and not the misogyny. Yup yup yup.
Misogyny??? lol… someone needs to move to Germany.

I can’t tell from here what your laptop is or if you are doing something wrong. It should be there.
At any rate, what you are doing is criticizing the site and its content at the same time that you haven’t put it to full use. You just don’t know its entirety. Please don’t do that, namely, passing judgement only knowing half (or less than half) of a matter.
It is still good to see you here and apparently feeling better at least to participate.
The better version of that is what happens if everyone Trump has insulted sues him.
Well I am not sure if you’re serious, but I think the same principle should apply, that there must be ongoing harassment rather than some random insults. I could see a cause for sueing him over targeting some minorities under such a law if you can prove there is a sustained pattern of psychological harassment through his words.
At any rate, what you are doing is criticizing the site and its content at the same time that you haven’t put it to full use. You just don’t know its entirety. Please don’t do that, namely, passing judgement only knowing half (or less than half) of a matter.
Well I have read about tiktok and how it operates, I have seen some videos, I have heard your experience with it. Anyway I think it is obvious that anywhere audovisual content can be uploaded and consumed there is an opportunity for propaganda. That is true for youtube and I have a suspicion it is even more true with tiktok for the reasons I gave.

I think it’s less that’s what the app is specifically for and more a case of that is what you use it to search for.
However I think you have to be able to prove some kind of ongoing campaign of harassment or a threat or defamation. Just an insult here and there should not be prosecutable.
I really don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t be. If somebody screams insults at me when I haven’t done anything to antagonise him and haven’t used that kind of language myself, I think it makes a lot of sense that I can sue them for it.
I think when it comes to actually prosecuting these things and fineing people, it’s mostly used in cases that are more like harrassment, or close to hate speech.
Imagine if someone like Trump would be able to sue everybody that insulted him.
I’d be fine with that, provided people could also sue him for insulting them. The problem with Trump isn’t that he’s not being insulted enough, I think.
I’d be fine with that, provided people could also sue him for insulting them.
I think it would quickly turn absurdist.
Anyway the US is pretty much free of this madness because of the 1st amendment, this is our curse.
Nah, in the US you don’t get sued if you insult someone, they instead run you over with a car or shoot you – far better!

Much like how we can’t criticize nazism unless we lived in Nazi Germany.

I agree: for me Instagram is about seeing photos that my friends and family post, and to follow people I choose to follow (like Mike Mignola and Luke Hamill and a couple of chefs I enjoy). Trust me, I’m not looking for Mignola or Hamill to pose in a swimsuit.
Instagram is about seeing photos that my friends and family post
That is 100% what I have it for, and to share photos to the same of course.

No, I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make sense at all… I mean, you can, you know, just ignore it and carry on with your day, that’s the sensible thing to do.

Also, oh I can and I will: Tiktok is hot garbage… one more instance of the ever growing tumourous cancer known as social media. But hey, if you enjoy it, go ahead, you don’t need to justify enjoying what you enjoy to anyone, least of all a bunch of manchildren who still get excited about the new MCU show or the new Boba Fett show =P
Guys, instagram is for pictures of dogs and process shots from comic artists. I thought everyone knew that.
And people posting pictures of their Transformers.

In fairness Bruce, no matter what combination of “models”, “swimsuits”, “young” and “tits” I type in, I just seem to get the same results every time.

Cliques and tribalism.

I think is was @njerry who said that Ming Na Wen of the Boba Fett show is 58. (I also remember her from the ER show.)
Excellent!
I said before about drawing inspiration from Bruce Wayne in his 50’s from the Miller story. I need real people though. I felt for a while that after a certain age, you should do less, but that is self-limiting bovine excrement. It is over only when you say it is over. You should still work out and look your best no matter what age. I mean look at a George Clooney and others his age.
Inspiration…

It is that for the most part, but it is also the algorithm.
What do you think Instagram is mostly used for @bruce ?
What you look at feeds the algorithm. If you interact with (ie like, comment on, or jerk off to) photos of young women in swim wear then it feeds you more of that. If interact with other stuff – dogs, comics, action figures, whatever- it feeds you that.

True…
As for TikTok, it is mostly for entertainment. Then again Playboy in its heyday was Entertainment for Men, yet some insisted they just read it for the articles. 😂
Also:
The youngest Kardashian Kylie now has 300M Instagram followers. The US has 300M pop. to give you an idea.
Apparently, the strategy is that Kim isn’t getting any younger, so the family groomed Kylie (as a Kim 2.0) to eventually replace her.
It is all so planned. If you want, just look at their before and after surgery pics on Google. It is ridiculous.

What inspiration are you taking from him? Being a billionaire? Being an orphan for 40 years?

He didn’t feel too old.

Maybe that is what the algorithm gives you from your search. I get mostly the college students who give their own critical thinking commentary on a wide range of topics.
As for the “lad” stuff, these young girls with youth on their side, doing a sexy, jiggling dance to tease the viewer… Some of them do it for fun, to get more followers and make money. There are stories of nurses, teachers, etc. who started on social media as a side gig and then when some realized they could make more (even 2-3X more jiggling full time), actually quit their jobs and now make a 6-7 figure salary online. Capitalism at its finest. Makes you wonder about how much disposable income and spare time the perverts really have, as well as how underpaid nurses, teachers, etc. really are in society.

😂😂😂😂😂
I got to tip my hat to you on that one!
That was good…
Ok… @bruce
I seem to know a little bit too much about social media and its marketing strategy but here goes… These “influencers” want to brand their looks and themselves (ie. subscriptions to their “Only Fans” exclusive pics) and hope to get a TV deal out of it like a few of them did (Charli Demilio, Addison Rae… Justin Bieber started out on YouTube).
With the young girls, it is all really the Kardashian’s doing. I mentioned the before and after pics, the BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) surgery for a rounder backside, and more surgery and tanning for a more exotic look to be all fetishes (fantasies) to everyone. It is all very strategic and minority women of color (black, Latino, Asian, Indian, etc.) have all called them out on it for ripping off their look (aesthetic) for monetary gain. They get further backlash from critics for giving teen girls a very unrealistic beauty standard to attain, making them feel inadequate and so on.
Then again, how do you think that family go to be worth over $3B collectively?
——————————————
Back to the Dark Knight: Bruce didn’t feel to old to be active again. He didn’t limit himself with bad reasoning.
A man can age gracefully. Like a George Clooney . A Matt Damon. Or a Daniel Craig who fills out a suit rather elegantly.
To be like these young guys Michael B. Jordan, Zac Efron, might be too much. Just look good relative to your age bracket.
I seem to know a little bit too much about social media and its marketing strategy

Yeah that’s a big story here right now. A lot of people involved with “the voice” apparently are assholes who exploited the women on the program (and in the case of one person underage girls)
We also have this super annoying chap Paul de Leeuw, a gross and hyperactive figure who molested a kid on tv in the 90s and despite this hasn’t been cancelled yet.
Whatever happened to everyone accepting the fact that Al has a thing for Tik tok and social media and leaving him alone about it?
Actually let the truth be told…
The previous POTUS was talking about banning TikTok in the US and I decided to get it before the cutoff to see what the fuss was all about. I saw some of the Jan 6 2021 insurrection videos at the time. I then got into it for some commentary on pop culture, politics, sociology, debate, and even some of the dancing.😂
It gets to be more of the same though. I get the gist of it and go back to it now and then.
Lately, I have been looking at Facebook groups, taking some pics and memes from there to post here sometimes. I have been typing in some old names from school and seeing what they are up to and look like now.
Exciting eh?
