I think I may have turned my kids into the least cool children in their school by getting them hooked on Just A Minute.
It’s great for them as the concept is so simple and the humour is so universal. We’ve taken to playing it ourselves when we get bored.
Like I say, extremely cool.
I’m hoping to get them started on John Finnemore soon too, as the new BBC Sounds app has quite a few of his shows on there.

Sorry, deviation.
I only started to listen to Just a Minute a few years ago and am sorry it took me so long. As a child I would have loved it I am sure.
Repetition of “sorry”.
Yes, it’s loads of fun and I only got into as an adult, but it really works for all ages.
Radio in the New York City area is pretty terrible, except for the college stations and National Public Radio.
WKCR, Columbia University’s radio station, has a couple of great music programs on Saturday morning/afternoon including a reggae show from 8am to noon, followed by “Across 110th Street” that covers soul, R&B, jazz and other music genres with a Harlem influence.
Fordham University’s WFUV has two Irish/Celtic music programs on Sunday, “A Thousand Welcomes” and “Ceol na nGael” to satisfy my occasional craving for the bodhran and tin whistle.
I pretty much only listen to satellite radio. I find terrestrial radio just all around awful. I really enjoy the indie station on SiriusXM.
Radio now is pretty much what you want it to be. Apps like Tune-In Radio allow you to listen to what you want all over the world. I plug my phone into an aux cable that cost me $1 in my car. Newer ones (like my wife’s) just have bluetooth connection.
I haven’t used the actual broadcast radio function for about 5 years so I don’t really care what is available locally.
The only shows I regularly listen to ‘live’ are Today and PM on radio 4, just to keep up with the news. There’s a lot of decent stuff on the BBC Sounds app though – I use that to keep up with current shows I’m interested in.

The search for a permanent new presenter of The News Quiz is starting to look like a knockout tournament – as Radio 4 announced a trio of hosts for the long-running topical quiz.
Nish Kumar, Angela Barnes and Andy Zaltzman will each host a series of the much-loved programme next year, the BBC has announced.
I liked all of their episodes last season, but Zaltzman felt the most like he was trying to do his own thing with it, rather than just the same as Miles, Sandi, etc did. We’ll see if that works for a full series.
I listened to this last year while wrapping Christmas presents and enjoyed it so much that I’ve just done the same this year. A lovely, moving show about a beautiful song.
Currently listening to Alan Partridge: From the Oasthouse from Audible: https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/From-The-Oasthouse-The-Alan-Partridge-Podcast-Audiobook/B089M9XZW5
It’s formatted as eighteen 20-25-minute podcast episodes, and I’m on the fifth one. Very good so far.
Didn’t realise that was out already. Great.
Watchmen’s world differs from ours. Beyond its superheroes and squid-induced catastrophes it’s conspicuously free of cell phones and other digital devices, suggesting what 2019 might look like without those transformative devices. (Newsstands are still going strong, for starters.) But, like the book that inspired it, it’s the ways Lindelof and his team of writers and directors use this unknown to comment on the world we know that makes it so compelling.
……………………………….
I could just ban and delete and may do soon enough but this kind of spam is so random. It’s an on topic post to the board, completely off topic to the thread and the spam is a link to a car parts company.
It’s just very strange. I couldn’t imagine a strategy less likely to get you any money. Decent point on Watchmen, not going to buy brake discs from half a world away.
I’ve seen a lot of these posts lately (over the last couple of months) and while they are diligently deleted accordingly, I can’t help giving it a bit of thought.
Either we’ve just become targeted by generic marketing bots. Not super-unlikely, seeing as the forum is linked on a few places. I have a link in my instagram bio, there’s a carrier twitter account, etc.
Or we’ve become testing grounds for someone who’s making bots and using this place for trial. Not as likely but viewing the above post through that lense gives me the idea that the bot is learning. It’s the only post that’s even been remotely on-topic for the board. Then again, we discuss so many things that are outside the comics/media spectrum I guess some of the other posts could be viewed as just as topical.
But at the end of the day, we all know it’s just Tim shitposting because he misses us.
(Tim, if you’re reading this – I miss you and you should come back and don’t take my above joke the wrong way and for the love of god stop spamming this nonsense!)
I’ve seen bots that copy a post from elsewhere on a board and repost it with an added spam link, presumably to ensure it contains on-topic content, so I presumed that was what was happening here. I imagine that stuff about Watchmen is something said by someone else in a previous thread.
Ah, here it is.
Mystery solved. I’ll delete the account.
Anders – before I put in any controls we were getting 10 new bot users an hour. Now we tend to get one a day get through the spam wall and do the initial sign up but not register properly with the confirmation email. It’s relatively rare to get as far as posting on the board.

While I am not exactly surprised that is a lot more than I expected.
It’s maddening really, when I was conversing with Jim on the transition across to the Carrier there was an option to have a cheaper version of the Discourse board but it wasn’t possible because of the traffic load, truth is though most of that traffic is spambots. Even in our cut down version I have to pay for the 100,000 visitors a month option knowing that we’d never get close to that if it was just the regular posters and lurkers.

I’ve got to say I’m impressed with that level of sophistication. If only these spammers would put their ingenuity to work on something for the benefit of mankind!
(Also impressed with your detective work, Dave.)
these are my favorite shows try these
try this and let me know

Hi, Athena. Can you please give me your personal phone number so I can call you about my plumbing problems? Thanks much!

That sounds more like a question for your doctor.

You mean Doctor Love?
I love that this is such a specific piece of spam. Only useful in the vain hope someone here is vaguely near Napa California, which they probably aren’t and in need of plumbing services. Maybe Johnny will take it up, I think he’s the only one who could vaguely be near enough (and I do realise California is a huge state larger than many countries so that’s doubtful).
It’s probably a better strategy to spam selling sunglasses by mail order.

Hit me up if you want to buy sunglasses.
There’s a reason for it that doesn’t rely on geography, though. Part of Google’s page ranking is based on how many people link into your page. Put your URL on enough forums, and your web site creeps up the search engine results.
Of course, that relies on Google crawling the Carrier’s pages. I don’t know whether it does, but Athena obviously thinks it’s worth a punt.
I love that it is in the quiet radio thread as well. Of all the people in Napa, California, who frequent a message board about movies and TV shows and nerd shit it is those who come here to discuss radio shows that are most likely to have plumbing problems.
Some real 4-D chess being played here.
