You guys know how it goes:

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the
Inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men
Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will
shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness
for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious
Anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers
And you will know
My name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee

The banners are hanging at half mast today
While men in high towers do nothing but pray
If he had harmed you with flesh of his own
We’d hunt him and hound him with sticks and with stones
But he entered your body with fire and with lead
So we’ll fight for his freedom as we lay your head
And why are you talking of terror? you say
Well there’s no need for language like that here today
He was young, he was wild, he was sick, he was white
So there’s no speak of terror this terrible night
So hush now my darling, lie still and sleep
The country is silent, refusing to speak
And hush you crybabies who will not agree
With the rights of the grave in the land of the free

I’ve always loved the lyrics to this song, written in 1973; but they seem more poignant and fitting now for my country.

Many’s the time I’ve been mistaken And many times confused
Yes, and often felt forsaken And certainly misused
But I’m all right, I’m all right, I’m just weary to my bones
Still, you don’t expect to be Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home

And I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered or driven to its knees
But it’s all right, it’s all right, We’ve lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road we’re traveling on
I wonder what went wrong. I can’t help it, I wonder what went wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
    Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
    The Statue of Liberty
    Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower, We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age’s most uncertain hour and sing an American tune
But it’s all right, it’s all right; You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest

Let us be lovers, we’ll marry our fortunes together
I’ve got some real estate here in my bag
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner’s pies

    Okay by me in America

For a small fee in America

    Industry boom in America
Twelve in a room in America
Lots of new housing with more space
Lots of doors slamming in our face
    I’ll get a terrace apartment
Better get rid of your accent
Life can be bright in America
If you can fight in America
Life is all right in America
If you’re all white in America

    A mulatto

    My libido
    Yeah!

I danced to Smells Like Teen Spirit at a wedding the day before yesterday. It was followed by this:

Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites
Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites

    After a time,
    You may find that having

    Way down.
    Deep.
In the middle of the Congo.

    A hippo took:
    an apricot;
    a guava;
    and a mango.

He stuck it with the others, and he danced.

    (A dainty tango.)

    The rhino said, “I know…”

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they’ll listen now
    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue
    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand
    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they’ll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one
    As beautiful as you
    Starry, starry night
    Portraits hung in empty halls
    Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget
Like the strangers that you’ve met
The ragged men in the ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they’re not listening still
    Perhaps they never will

    “Vincent” by Don McLean

One of Tupac Shakur’s favorite songs

    Way down.
    Deep.

    I’m gonna take you down
Deep down to the front lines

    You woke up this morning
    Got yourself a gun,
    Mama always said you’d be
    The Chosen One.

She said: You’re one in a million
You’ve got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes

    You woke up this morning
    All that love had gone
    Your Papa never told you
    About right and wrong

    But you’re looking good, baby
    I believe you’re feeling fine,(shame about it)
    Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes

    You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
    You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes

    You woke up this morning
    The world turned upside down
Lord above, thing’s ain’t been the same
Since the blues walked into town
But you’re one in a million
You’ve got that shotgun shine (shame about it)
    Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes
    You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
    You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes

When you woke up this morning everything was gone
By half past ten your head was going ding-dong
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes
Like a voice trying to tell you there’s something you should know
Last night you were flying but today you’re so low
Ain’t it times like these that make you wonder if
    You’ll ever know the meaning of things as they appear to the others;
Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers
Don’t you wish you didn’t function, don’t you wish you
Didn’t think beyond the next paycheck and the next little drink?
Well you do so make up your mind to go on, ’cause
When you woke up this morning everything you had was gone

    Woke up this morning
    Woke up this morning
    Woke up this morning
You want to be the Chosen One

    Woke up this morning
    Woke up this morning
    Woke up this morning
    You got yourself a gun

A lovestruck Romeo sang the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, “You and me, babe, how about it?”
Juliet says, “Hey, it’s Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack”
He’s underneath the window, she’s singing, “Hey, la, my boyfriend’s back
You shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway, what you gonna do about it?”
“Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet, and you exploded into my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?”
Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah
Now you just say “oh, Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him”
“Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry
You said ‘I love you like the stars above, I’ll love you till I die’
There’s a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?”
I can’t do the talk like they talk on the TV
And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you
I can’t do anything except be in love with you
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion
Julie, I’d do the stars with you any time
“Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said ‘I love you like the stars above, I’ll love you till I die’
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?”
And a lovestruck Romeo, he sang the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, “You and me, babe, how about it?
You and me, babe, how about it?”

Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday
You got mud on your face, you big disgrace
Kicking your can all over the place, singin’
We will, we will rock you
We will, we will rock you
Buddy, you’re a young man, hard man
Shouting in the street, gonna take on the world someday
You got blood on your face, you big disgrace
Waving your banner all over the place
We will, we will rock you, sing it!
We will, we will rock you
Buddy, you’re an old man, poor man
Pleading with your eyes, gonna make you some peace someday
You got mud on your face, big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place
We will, we will rock you, sing it
We will, we will rock you, everybody
We will, we will rock you, hmm
We will, we will rock you
    Alright

Hello? Is anybody home? Well, you don’t know me,
    But I know you.
And I’ve got a message to give to you.
    Here come the planes.
So you better get ready. Ready to go. You can come
As you are, but pay as you go. Pay as you go.
And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the
    Hand, the hand that takes.
This is the hand, the hand that takes.
    Here come the planes.
They’re American planes. Made in America.
    Smoking or non-smoking?
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom
Of night shall stay these couriers from the swift
    Completion of their appointed rounds.

I can see it in your eyes
I can see it in your smile
You’re all I’ve ever wanted, and my arms are open wide
‘Cause you know just what to say
And you know just what to do

    Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don’t you let me go home
(Hoist up the John B’s sail)
    Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I want to go home
    Let me go home

It is seven long years since three ships of fame
Caused my dear husband to cross the main,
And a hundred seamen of courage stout
A northwest passage for to find out.
    .
They sail-ed east and they sail-ed west
To find their passage they knew not best.
Ten thousand pounds would I freely give
If I only knew if my husband lived.

    Go watch the TV
    Tell me what you see
    All these bleeding wounds
And rising seas, they don’t mean much to me
From the couch here, I plead apathy

The politicians, they don’t speak for me
    A wreck’s a wreck, atleast that’s what I see
And your faith you keep, is it dark now?
    It’s waiting for me

    So stop the bad dreams
    Stop the headaches
    And leave a little light
Like when you say it’s alright
Like when you say it’s alright
    Well, I guess it is

    Go watch the TV
    Tell me what you see
Any hope and love or realised dreams?
That’s what I want to see
No more pain, no tears, no more grief
    So stop the bad dreams
    Stop the headaches
    And leave a little light

Like when you say it’s alright
Like when you say it’s alright

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
    In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
    Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
    Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
    Eleanor Rigby
Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
    Lives in a dream
    Waits at the window
Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
    Who is it for?
    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
    All the lonely people
    Where do they all belong?
    Father McKenzie
Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
    No one comes near
    Look at him working
Darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there
    What does he care?
    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
    All the lonely people
    Where do they all belong?
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
    Eleanor Rigby
Died in the church and was buried along with her name
    Nobody came
    Father McKenzie
Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
    No one was saved
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
    Where do they all belong?

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes

I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
    She’s playing with her jewelry
    She’s putting up her hair
    She’s touring the facilities
    And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket.

I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete, to cut through red tape

With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facilities and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long, long jacket

I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At City Bank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my pen

She wants a car with a cup holder armrest
She wants a car that will get her there
    She’s changing her name
    From Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket

Made the bus in seconds flat
Made my way upstairs and had a smoke

Growing up in New York, when I first heard this song in 1967 I didn’t understand what Paul meant by “upstairs”; then I went to Cork City in 1968 and discovered the double decker bus.

It never even occurred to me that he wasn’t referring to going upstairs at the location (work?) to which he was delivered by the bus.

  • #7485

The top deck of a double-decker was for smokers, the bottom deck was non-smoking. So it seems more likely he’s referring to the bus than the destination. (I mean, he *might* have had a second-floor office, but there’s nothing else in the song’s narrative to support this.)

  • #7487

    Mind blown.
