Time for a new politics thread. Guessing it’ll be fairly quiet given the calm and measured state of world politics today.

They have a majority of 3 and one of them has said she won’t vote to appoint a justice before an election. If any decision is a tie the VP gets the casting vote. So if my maths are right if 5 are absent they’ll lose.

The two senators with positive Covid results are meant to quarantine for 10 days which would get them back for the first hearings, that’s if they don’t get seriously ill with it though and no more of them test positive.

Latest news is that Trump is doing fine. Fever free for 24 hours, no issues with breathing. Seems likely he’ll be out of the hospital by Monday at this rate (if not sooner). Obviously with Covid things can change rapidly and there are a slew of complications that can arise from it outside of the basic respiratory stuff, but I’m assuming he’ll just experience these minor symptoms and that’s about it.

The slew of people in his circle that have tested positive will probably end up being the bigger story when all is said and done as it’s proof that this administrations carelessness when it comes to Covid has been many people at risk unnecessarily. Unfortunately, it’s not something the Biden campaign will feel comfortable jumping on until Trump recovers. But it’s something they need to jump on because it perfectly encapsulates Trump’s failed leadership on Covid.

Can’t wait to hear him talk about it the next debate. I am doing great Joe. I have had a great recovery, you could even say a v shaped recovery. It’s not even fine, all the doctors say it’s the greatest recovery they’ve ever seen.  I beat covid Joe. Could you beat covid joe? It’s been great, everybody said i did phenomenal and everybody is very happy with it Joe. You couldn’t beat covid Joe, you’ve never beaten covid in your 47 years in the senate. I’ve beaten more covid than any president before me. It’s just been tremendous.

If Trump were fine he’d be calling out his detractors on Twitter (it beggars belief his people haven’t been tweeting for him) and calling in to Hannity. His doctors have been wishy washy on whether he’s been on oxygen, too.

  • #39731

There does seem to be a certain amount of confusion over his current status. The latest briefings are quite muddled.

  • #39732

Technical question: what happens with votes for Trump if he dies between now and the election? Do they go to Pence? Will the election be between Pence and Biden or will they pick another Republican?

  • #39733

Earlier Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was caught on video asking to speak off the record with the press pool outside Walter Reed:

I think it’s uncharted territory as it hasn’t ever happened before that a nominee has died between nomination and the election.

Given that in the US presidential election voters specifically choose a person rather than a party, it wouldn’t be as straightforward as simply allocating Trump votes to Pence – and Pence also hasn’t gone through the nomination process. So there are lots of open questions.

  • #39739

It’s uncharted but from what I have read there’s basically little choice. It is written in stone that a newly elected President must be in place by the end of January (note newly elected, not new).

Compared to parliamentary systems options for delay are very limited. So technically they could nominate someone else but their current nomination process takes many months.

About the people saying they would be happy if Trump died, I don’t share the sentiment. But everybody has to decide for themselves what to think. I recognize I am not in a position to judge since I don’t have to live in the US. But if I have any angry feelings towards any US president or ex-president, I think I feel worse about Dubya, and also Obama for the wars they started. But I don’t wish for Dubya’s death.

  • #39742

If I were alive during Hitler’s rise to power I’d wish him dead, and wish him dead even more when he started putting people in camps. Same difference.

Yeah, I mean putting it simply I think the only options in the case of a dead or incapacitated Trump are a) someone else is dropped in as a Republican nominee at short notice or b) the election is delayed and they do the same thing.

Given the likely outcry and constitutional difficulties attached to delaying the election I think they’d find a way to parachute in Pence at short notice.

Of course this is complicated further by the fact that postal votes are already being submitted with Trump’s name on. What happens with those I’m not sure – I guess they would have to be voided and resubmitted.

All of this is not ideal. I would hope for Trump to still be a viable candidate through to the election to avoid more chaos.

  • #39746

If it is Pence instead of Trump, would that make a Republican win more likely or less likely I wonder? Pence doesn’t have the cult following I think, but he also doesn’t have the baggage Trump does.

People might like Pence less than they do Trump.

  • #39747

It’s funny actually I Googled an article on the scenario and it is quite chaotic, there are state level rules on who to put forward from the electoral college and none of them are consistent.

In general people do tend to be reactive with these things rather than think through scenarios. I remember in my last job I went into a disaster recovery meeting, my new boss sent me because I had some experience there as I came from the banking industry.

They’d had a power cut a year previously and the meeting was all about reacting to a power cut. I said the office was right next to the airport, what if a plane crashed into it? The plan was to shift staff across from the island to the mainland, I asked what if the bridge is closed?

I was never invited back and none of those scenarios were ever looked at (and that’s in a Fortune 500 company).

In general people do tend to be reactive with these things rather than think through scenarios.

At the same time though, when there aren’t clear rules in place I think people are able to be fairly pragmatic and cut through the theoretical complications if there’s an obvious practical solution.

You can look at something like the previous Tory leadership campaign where Theresa May got through to the final round and her opponent dropped out so there was no party membership vote. Everyone sort of shrugged their shoulders and said “ok, you’re PM” even though it didn’t follow the on-paper procedure.

I think in this case they’d simply find a way to switch it to Pence and bring on a new VP candidate as quickly as possible.

  • #39752

I suspect so too but it is true that the UK system is very much based on pragmatism. It doesn’t work on quite the same level as the US on everything having to align to the constitution and legal precedent. Which is good or bad depending on the scenario.

The time limitation though does suggest the VP or no other options

I’m not overly fond of the idea of Trump dying in office, thus making him a martyr for his odious supporters (I’d much rather he live to suffer an ignominious defeat at the polls), but if he does, let’s hope the GOP is pushed as quickly to replace him as he and they were to replace RBG.

  • #39774

there’s nothing bad that could happen to him (Trump) that wouldn’t leave me feeling happy and relieved.

I’m in another country, but lets face it, the whole world watches the U.S.
I work with people very engaged saying “that murderer has it coming!” (I’m assuming inaction and sheer stupidity leading to deaths has him blood guilty, and I agree).
Not one word of showing any respect (although some just don’t speak on the subject).
He is a polarizing figure, and I can’t believe it ever happened.

    So if something were to happen soon, I remember a conversation a ways back I had with a good friend (very smart, educated, trustworthy) and what he had to say about the current Vice President;
“say what you will about Trump, he’s just an idiot that shouldn’t be there.
Mike Pence is pure evil. If he were to take the ‘Oath of Office’ things will get worse.”

Now I’ve got nothing to back that up (and sorry if I’ve over-stepped).
But to those that hope the worst, be careful what you wish for.
just let Trump recover, and lose the election in an embarrassing way.

And it must be hard to be a Republican nowadays.
I know there are lots that are good people, but that whole party needs to re-invent itself from the ground up.
No patchwork, or this cycle will just keep happening.

Regarding Trump’s handling of covid-19, I think you can’t just say he is responsible for all that died. That just doesn’t make any sense at all. You can criticize certain points, I think he has handled it way too scattershot, without a real plan. He should have had a team of experts out there, medical, economical, even military and human rights experts, saying “we’re going to do this, because of this”, and just show they’re acting consequentially. Show they understand the gravity of the situation and the people’s concerns. While the number of fatalities relative to the total population is high, some other countries like Belgium and Spain are even worse.

The Obama administration left behind a pandemic playbook plus other safeguards and protocols to be used in an event such as this.

Trump and his administration not only ignored this, they defunded parts of this. What’s more, it has been documented that Trump himself is the source of much of the misinformation about the pandemic.

So, yes, Trump and his administration IS responsible for the deaths in the US. There is no one else to blame but him.

Yeah, I want to see Trump recover and lose the election. Not just so he can suffer that loss, but I want his base to suffer that loss too. In some ways, I think that’s even more important. His rabid base needs to see America reject Trump by as big a margin as possible. Do I have faith that will happen? Not really, but if America is going to ever recover from Trumpism then it needs to be rejected quite hard 30 days from now.

Secret Service agents, doctors aghast at Trump’s drive outside hospital

Current and former Secret Service agents and medical professionals were aghast Sunday night at President Trump’s trip outside the hospital where he is being treated for the coronavirus, saying the president endangered those inside his SUV for a publicity stunt.

As the backlash grew, multiple aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal deliberations also called Trump’s evening outing an unnecessary risk — but said it was not surprising. Trump had said he was bored in the hospital, advisers said. He wanted to show strength after his chief of staff offered a grimmer assessment of his health than doctors, according to campaign and White House officials.

A growing number of Secret Service agents have been concerned about the president’s seeming indifference to the health risks they face when traveling with him in public, and a few reacted with outrage to the trip, asking how Trump’s desire to be seen outside his hospital suite justified the jeopardy to agents protecting him. Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis has already brought new scrutiny to his lax approach to social distancing, as public health officials scramble to trace those he may have exposed at large in-person events.

“He’s not even pretending to care now,” one agent said after the president’s jaunt outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to wave at supportive crowds.

“Where are the adults?” said a former Secret Service member.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retribution.

White House spokesman Judd Deere defended the outing, telling reporters “appropriate precautions were taken in the execution of this movement to protect the president and all those supporting it.” Deere said precautions included personal protective equipment, without providing further details, and added the trip “was cleared by the medical team as safe to do.”

The White House did not immediately respond to questions from The Washington Post on Sunday night.

Trump wore a mask as he waved from the back of his vehicle, after announcing he would “pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots that we have out on the street.” But the face covering was little comfort to doctors, who took to Twitter to criticize the trip as irresponsible. Masks “help, but they are not an impenetrable force field,” tweeted Saad B. Omer, director of the Yale Institute for Global Health.

Among critics was a doctor affiliated with Walter Reed.

“Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary Presidential ‘drive-by’ just now has to be quarantined for 14 days,” tweeted James P. Phillips, who is also a professor at George Washington University. “They might get sick. They may die. For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater. This is insanity.”

Phillips said the risk of viral transmission inside the car is “as high as it gets outside of medical procedures.” Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington University, noted people inside a hospital wear extensive protective gear — gowns, gloves, N95 masks and more — when they will be in close contact with a coronavirus patient such as Trump.

“By taking a joy ride outside Walter Reed the president is placing his Secret Service detail at grave risk,” he tweeted.

Trump had been irked that White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows suggested he was not doing well as he fought the virus, according to campaign and White House officials.

“The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning, and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care,” Meadows said Saturday afternoon, in sharp contrast to doctors who offered rosy assessments at an earlier news conference. “We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”

Later that day, Meadows said Trump’s condition had improved significantly but maintained the president was “not out of the woods,” echoing Trump’s doctor.

Trump’s outing Sunday came as White House officials acknowledged the president’s health deteriorated to the point where he received supplemental oxygen, something they previously refused to disclose. Trump’s doctor, Sean Conley, said Sunday he was “trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president, over his course of illness, has had.”

“Optics matter right now,” said one senior aide close to Meadows, adding: “Shows of strength and resilience are crucial. For the American public, but also those watching abroad.”

I love that they always have the most ridiculously wrong takeaways. Yes, optics are important…the optics that your dumbass administration actually learned their lesson from their careless attitude towards the virus and are now being responsible. Not some stupid sign of strength that will only appeal to your diehard base that’s obsessed with everything Trump does already.

Timing is a big thing. Boris Johnson was posting videos like Trump a few days in, then after about 10 days was into intensive care (and he genuinely was very ill, you may know I know someone who works in St Thomas’ hospital where he was treated).

They have a better grasp on treatment now definitely but the 10 day thing seems a very common pattern. Very few get it and fall into deep illness suddenly.

At the same time, treatment protocols have evolved quite a bit since Johnson was hospitalised. For example, it was reported that Trump was being treated with dexamethasone, which was only confirmed as effective for COVID patients in June and even then is only recommended for use in relatively severe cases.

Combined with the reports that Trump had been given oxygen as well as treated with remdesivir and other investigational treatments, it seems quite plausible that he was exhibiting quite serious symptoms in the run up to the weekend (and he could have had it for some days prior to that as far as we know) and has come out the other side.

But the path of this illness is still very difficult to predict and it’s perfectly possible he gets worse again, who knows.

Which was the main thrust of ‘They have a better grasp on treatment now definitely’.

However pretty much every report you see of serious difficulties has come at least a week in from diagnosis, even now.

  • #39933

It is interesting though that in Trump’s case it seems to have been a lot more accelerated than that. Tested positive early on Friday, treated with oxygen, remdesivir, dexamethasone and REGN-COV2 before the weekend is over.

Whether that’s because he declined unusually quickly, or had the virus longer than we know, or because he’s the president and they’re throwing the kitchen sink at him, who knows.

Actually, I have been reconsidering my aditude to Trump. This was actually on the urging of someone anti-Trump, who think  that it’s more important to have aditudes towards candidates that are not based on hasty reasoning, even if that means I would vote for Trump.

The initial assumption that there’s a secret third faction on the issue I was consurned about could be explained by the fact that it is already known there’s a split on my side over non-political issues and that those on the other side of that split didn’t realize that their language towards the non-political issue could be read by my side as a secret disagreement on the political issue. This, to say that Trump and the Republicans represent a secret third political faction is premature without more information about it. Therefore, until I talk to someone on my side who has a better idea of the heartbeat of the other apolitical side, I must suspend judgement on Trump if that’s the root of my distrust; otherwise I might be engaging in self deception and not being true to myself.

  • #39943

Basically, what the person was saying is that to damn a candidate for a suspicion over one issue, that could easily be wrong, shows political immaturity and to them, even if they hate that candidate, my maturity as a voter is more important, since I’m not in a swing state anyway.

Why the fuck is a billion pound IT system being run through MS Excel spreadsheets anyway?

Because an Excel licence only costs £129. Profit!!!

Here’s some context. Malaysia released a QR code check-in app in early May, it has worked from day one. The development cost was revealed to be RM36,000 or just under £7000.

Developing apps is actually my job nowadays (or organising developers to do it for me). Mind boggled by the numbers coming out of the UK. We made one that replaced paper invoices and collections and sent the data back from the salesman’s phone to automatically update a company’s accountancy software. Cost us £2000.

Now I appreciate costs are cheaper out here but you can multiply that by 100 and it’s quite some way off the £11m the UK government paid for their initial discarded one and as a bonus…. ours works!

Apparently it was the only way the disparate systems reporting into the app could communicate with each other, and clearly there wasn’t enough cash in the BILLIONS OF POUNDS BUDGET to develop a MySQL Database

He’s too young to really suffer from it (though it’s not like the young are safe from Covid) but this brightened my day:

That dude absolutely terrifies me. I hope some permanent bodily damage is in his future at the least.

Everyone sees Trump, but I also see Putin. He wanted Trump to win because he knew that Trump’s views, actions, and personality would destabilize the US. In a manner of speaking, Putin f*cked the US good.

    Just saying.

This is some Ben Shapiro-level dipshittery.  For one thing, Trump is on a heavy dose of steroids that literally make you feel better than you actually are before you crash massively when your course of meds end, for another there are multiple reports that he’s not doing anywhere near as well as the official line claims, for another we can’t trust the official line as his doctors admitted to lying about his state the other day, for another thing the video evidence from his bigman strong balcony appearance shows he’s having trouble breathing at the very least, and ultimately, pumping some old man full of experimental drugs won’t lead to some magical antibodies because that’s only how medicine works on TV.

And Trump has shares in the company that makes it, and he keeps dropping their name so their stock value has been rising even while his declaration that he’s not going to negotiate on a new Covid stimulus package until after the election has tanked the market.

Trump says he won’t participate in next debate after commission announces it will be virtual

Of course he won’t. It makes him look weak and reinforces how badly he has fucked up on the coronavirus response.

    I love this bit though:

Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager, accused the commission on Thursday of “unilaterally canceling an in-person debate” to help Biden and said the President will be holding a rally instead of attending the debate.

Gee, I wonder if masks and social distancing will be required at the rally?

Part of my job involves prepping for big televised events. Vivid made it crazy difficult this year, but Trump just turns everything into a complete nightmare. We’re in the middle of prep for the 2nd debate, and all we can do is stay the course even though it might not happen at all because this giant man-child throws a temper tantrum when he doesn’t get his way.

It’s also laughable when you consider just a month or so ago the Trump campaign was baselessly saying Biden was trying to back out of the debates. Now they’re basically trying to blame Biden for Trump being careless and holding a super spreader event a month before the election. 2020 is a hell of a joke.

Might be harder now since Biden scheduled a town hall with ABC on 10/15. So Trump can go continue to pander to his base while Biden gets national coverage with another standalone town hall. I’m glad to see Trump act like he wants to win just about as much as I want him to win.

Trump is a dog with two bones.

On one hand, he is a power-hungry tyrant who always wants more power and for people to fear him and kiss his ass. He is operating on the largest stage of his life and all eyes are always on him. Being POTUS is probably the biggest ego boost he has ever had.

On the other hand, being president has to be the worst thing he has ever experienced. He doesn’t always get what he wants and too many of his secrets have been exposed. His actions and decisions are constantly questioned and he can’t shut people up like he is used to doing. You can tell he is miserable.

He hates the job but his ego won’t let him quit.

I’m sure there are days he regrets running for president in the first place.

He is such a narcissist and egotist I don’t think regrets anything. He is never responsible. He always has a fall guy to blame.
