Time for a new politics thread. Guessing it’ll be fairly quiet given the calm and measured state of world politics today.

You would think a nation filled with freedom-loving gun-nuts would’ve shot him by now.

Sadly those people seem largely appeased by just saying freedom a lot while promising to caress the 2nd Amendment at least once a day.

It’s like watching a comedy skit where one person is putting their fists up for a fight and insisting on Queensbury Rules, while their opponent is repeatedly throwing sand in their face, kicking them in the crotch, pulling weapons. and running them over with a car.

Replace “sand” with “tear gas”, and that’s how peaceful BLM protesters have been treated.

Well yeah, the protesters are taking a principled stand so they need to be shot at, run over, tear gassed, harassed and maligned in the press.  Can’t have people exercising their right to free speech in an inconvenient way.

Now the governor of Florida is trying to pass some flimsy law defending those who run over protesters in their vehicle. It is supposedly to be under some “threat” and the driver has to “escape”. I kid you not.

This is what happens when “people” didn’t vote against him in 2016 because of being so fickle and wishy washy about Hilary and sitting out the midterms. NOW “people” cry out for justice. To still have “undecided” and “swing” states… How many voted for him in ’16? I still have to say as I posted before… people are not too bright.

How the Democrats can still be so naïve is beyond me. Especially in this situation. If the GOP had decency then the country wouldn’t be in such dire straights. Trump wouldn’t be president and McConnell and his cohorts never would have pulled his Supreme Court gambit in 2016. They aren’t interested in decency, they’re interested in winning at all costs. And apparently the Dems will never learn that.

Really, it’s because the Democrats’ interests aren’t ours.  They’re taking money from most of the same donors as the Republicans, and so long as the interests of capital are not damaged, they don’t really give a shit what happens to the rest of us.

Yeah that video has seemingly gone viral on Twitter today but it is from December 2019.

  • #39398

All day I told myself I wasn’t gonna watch the debate, but I only lasted about 20 minutes before I looked up a livestream. Man, what an absolute shitshow. Trump ranting like a madman while Biden mostly came off as feeble, needing Wallace to stick up for him instead of projecting confidence from the podium. America has been a nonstop embarrassment since 2016. I feel like I’m living in a failed state.

  • #39401

I thought Biden started off fine, but about 1/3 of the way through you could tell he was tired of trying to deal with Trump railing like a crazy person and just kind of gave up. Future debates should be done on Zoom and the candidates should be muted while the other speaks. Otherwise just cancel the rest, because tonight was an embarrassment.

And yes, Trump’s refusal to condemn white supremacists again and to not commit to accepting the election results were the things that stood out from the overwhelming noise.

It’s a weakness of the one-on-one debate format in general, if either of the speakers wants to wreck it then they can, just by speaking over the other. We had the same last year in the UK with Johnson. It ends up being a load of empty noise that’s off-putting as a viewer whatever your political affiliation.

As much as the larger debates with several speakers (as we sometimes have in the UK, with 7 parties represented) can end up a bit piecemeal, I do think that they naturally minimise the interruption element – because if you’re up against one other person you can spin constant interruptions as being assertive and strong, but if you’re the only person in a group of seven who’s shouting and interrupting then you look more like an asshole.

This is a bit of a thing long commented on by political pundits. While the leadership is usually very impressive when the SNP suddenly ballooned from around 6 MPs to suddenly 50+ a lot of the individual candidates brought in were rather sketchy.

I think on a basic human decency level, some people will stop short of wanting to wish illness or death on anybody, no matter how awful a person they are.

Yes, Trump may not have that degree of decency himself, but it doesn’t mean everyone has to sink to his level.

I won’t say I’ll be happy, but I certainly won’t shed any tears when Trump dies. Or even offer condolences. He’s a terrible excuse for a human and the world is better off with fewer people like him in it.

Also, upon hearing the new I’ll admit that the cynic in me wondered if this was Trump attempting some sort of October surprise. He says he gets covid to garner sympathy, quarantines for a couple weeks, then comes out and says he beats it because he’s strong and it wasn’t that bad and people shouldn’t worry. And maybe also throw in something about hydroxychloriquine and/or a vaccine.

No other president would have elicited this kind of thought from me, but Trump is such a conman that I wouldn’t put it past him to distract people from this shitshow of a debate and the thousand other terrible things he’s responsible for.

And at this point I’m more worried for Biden. He spent 90 minutes standing near Trump getting yelled at by him. I sure hope Biden doesn’t test positive.

Yeah, it’s tough, isn’t it? Because I’d be quite happy for the fucker to die from a horrible illness, especially this one that he’s responsible for so many others catching and dying from. But his death would be awkward in many ways and I’d rather see him in jail.

It was the same thing with Boris. I’m not saying I wanted him to die from covid, but did he deserve to? Probably. But if he had, the Tory party would have made him a martyr to the cause of Brexit and whatnot. Although it’s hard to imagine that would have been as destructive as Boris himself actually is.

Everyone has their own level on this stuff and it’s quite personal. There have been a parade of hateful characters in British politics and while I’ve often found myself vehemently disagreeing with everything they stand for, I can’t honestly say I’ve genuinely found myself wishing illness or death on anyone personally. I understand why someone might though.

I’m still dubious, though. If I scan a QR code to go into a place that’s later identified as being the source of an outbreak, it doesn’t matter if I spent less than 20 minutes in there (because they have no way to measure that, you don’t scan out), I’ll still have to spend two weeks under house arrest.

Second of all, I meant a view that we argued about as far back as Obama’s first term, and has been a divisive topic since before the internet was a big deal. I’m saying that there’s three factions on the issue, not two, but the faction that most of the movers and shakers in the GOP belong to pretends to belong to mine, but hate mine and the one a lot of people here support, even though both of us spew vitriol at each other, and will, as long as the two views exist. But I think that people who would attack that view, even with the most venom, are more ethical than pretending to support it, but really hating it. I’m just avoiding naming the issue, because I know even naming it is like dropping a nuke.

The latest news seems to be that Trump has been hospitalised. I guess it’s serious.

Could be precautionary, could be serious. But certainly means he’s having symptoms his doctors don’t want to ignore.

How about a joke Donnie, what do you get when you cross a narcissist devoid of logic ignoring the people he serves with a pandemic?

the absence of a check-out option

Some places here do have the check out option (but I admit I neglected to do so a few times).

Don’t like the idea of not getting to personally kill him though. Might have to get on with it. @Christian, PM me with murder tips.

Thing is, chances are that he won’t develop severe symptoms. Even with people his age, it’s only like a one in eight chance or so that he could die from it. It’s likely that he’ll only be lightly affected, and then he’ll be able to say “See? It’s no big deal!” with the same logic with which he equates the weather and the climate.

Also, relief as it would be to just see him gone, I think him suddenly dying would leave the US in a pretty bad place. You just know the QAnon conspiracy nuts would go into full apocalypse mode and he’d probably become some kind of martyr for the far right for ages to come. With this kind of push, a leap into proper terrorist territory doesn’t seem unlikely at all.

I’d much rather see him badly lose this election and then be jailed for tax evasion and a dozen other crimes, and see him slowly sink into despair and madness on the TV interviews he’d give from prison.

I agree. I don’t think it would hep anything, better he just loses the election. I do think the news of his illness is genuine though because he’s being treated with remdesivir, if it was an act or exaggerated they’d be saying they were using his hydro-whatsit that he championed.

With people I violently dislike I still never wish death on them, however I’m not going to pretend to be sad when it does happen.

As the positive tests spread through Republican high command (clearly they should just not be testing if they don’t want to test positive  ), including some senators, it’s had me wondering how many would need to be unavailable to vote on the Supreme Court nomination for it not to pass. Anyone know the maths on that?
