You couldn’t make it up – MAGA influencer who makes pro-ICE vids is….

You know where this is going…

Yep, arrested by ICE and scheduled to be deported.

With McSweeny gone they just have to stop pursing RefUK voters who are never going to vote for them.

He thought he got “membership” but now he knows. I know about Brazilian right wingers. (They even imitated Jan 6th in their own way in their nation’s capital, Brasilia). But the link is about Boston Mass. There are a lot of Brazilians in Massachusetts and as the link says, they are no longer wearing Brazilian flag gear and speaking Portuguese publicly.

And here is another one. She is Ileana Garcia, Florida state senator, co founder for the “Latinas for Trump” organization. She has been upset since the election. Now she is scared for her son because of ICE. Again:”This is not what we voted for”

    And now these two:

I know about the criticisms of the Dem party, but I also include some sociology and psychology, the mindset of voter behavior and mentality. There is this wanting to differentiate from the rest (“pick me”), catering to MAGA to get some type of acceptance/”membership”, only to find yourself deported, hunted down by ICE, or this crying NOW that you, family, and friends are also the target. (Now that they are the target, they cry as if it never happened before, ignoring centuries of US history of it happening to black and native Americans). When they say “This is not what I voted for” they really mean that they didn’t vote for any of this to happen to them.

Some of them voted during the campaign thinking that they were safe, but if you side with someone who is very abusive to others but “nice” to you, don’t think you’ve been accepted, or are the exception or safe. It might mean that somewhere down the line, you just might be next. But the mental gymnastics ie. all the evidence (not just Jan 6 or 34 counts) you would have to ignore and bypass, to see the action taken against people who are practically kinfolk and to say that it doesn’t apply to you, not seeing how things are connected and only now are you crying. Incredible.

One thing all politicians tend to be bad at, and should learn how to be better at, is accepting a loss.  Sometimes, you lose, you thought you were right, then others, like a Supreme Court, tell you that you’re not. At that point, it’s over, sure you can huff about appealing, but if the judgment was sound, appealing won’t change it.

Thus Labour, Cooper, Mahmood and Palestine Action. There was nothing then, and now, stopping the government holding individuals responsible for their alleged actions. It was in going further and using that as reason to ban the entire group as terrorists that they went too far.

You wouldn’t know it from the way politicians go on about it, but governments tend to win more than they lose at court. They only tend to lose with weak, crappy policy or cases.

US economic growth was 2.2 %, not that bad. I keep hearing it’s going to collapse under Trump’s policies, but it seems like it is like the forecast of Russian economy collapsing, when growth there consistently outpaced Europe’s growth. Could still happen of course, but I’m a bit skeptical.

  • #145773

Well, it’s fallen more than one percent compared to Biden, so that’s not great. Especially considering Trump’s policies’ effects would only have been felt the second part of the year.

I haven’t seen any good article in any medium that gives a good overview of the Epstein files and the worst revelations in it nor any analysis of what Epstein’s function was and why he got away with what he did. It is all superficial stuff, and some details here and there, and some hyperbolic stuff (“Epstein ate babies!”)

I wonder if this is on purpose, if the media have been instructed not to dig too deeply. Not sure. But I think it’s weird. Even the Guardian has been very sparse in the information they gave about the files and their meaning. For instance, if you compare it to the abuse scandal in the Catholic church, there were articles I think, that described how the church protected the abusers. I don’t think we’ve seen such an explanation regarding Epstein. He just “got away with it”.

I think because the scandal is so wide and deep, it is really hard to simply and concisely summarize it all.

Here are a few videos that cover some of it and give you some insight:

I think it’s going to just take a bit longer, because everybody is overwhelmed with the amount of files and the chaos of the way they were released. Which was of course the point. But they’ll figure it out, it’s just going to take some time.

As far as getting away with it is concerned though… with the current state of the US justice system, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of hope.

One bit I saw about Epstein which I did like, argued that people like him are just, very simply, the consequence of a system that doesn’t hold the rich and powerful responsible for their actions. Eventually bad people do bad stuff, if the inequality of wealth and power is so large.

While I think that is true, I still think it is important to get some clarity about who did what.

I’ve some charts where Epstein is at the center and all the connections radiate out and how those connections tie together. They look like they were created by a spider on crystal meth.

You can google them but as more files and information comes to light, the bigger it gets. Some people are simply namedropped and haven’t committed any criminal activity. It is going to take a lot to sort through the files and people to determine who can be charged with what based on the evidence.

Honestly, it will take years to go through all of it.

Yeah, both of that is true. There has to be clarity as well as accountability – if a shitload of people don’t go to prison over this, it’ll show that there is no justice and no actual rule of law in the US.

On the other hand, yes, I think it’s inevitable that this is what happens when you allow people to become unimagineably rich to the extent that we do. And it doesn’t seem like they’re going to stand for reform where that is concerned, but will rather exacerbate things to the point where we get out the guilloutines.

So the Greens have won the Gorton and Denton by-election in a landslide, beating Reform, who took second place by 12%.  Labour and the Tories both lost massive amounts of vote share.  I’d been reading over the last few days about hoe Labour spent so much effort attacking the Greens instead of Reform, up to and including hatchet ads, sending out pamphlets claiming that tactical vote advocate groups pushed Labour a the winning choice in the election (the actual group backed the Greens), which is just despicable.  It also shows how insidious the Labour Right are, they’re more than willing to sell out the Left in the UK and enable the Tories or Reform to win if they can’t win themselves. And after the way they admitted to sabotaging Corbyn’s first general election run, and the disaster that Starmer has been, people are turning to a party that has actual left wing ideals in droves.

Let’s just hope that the Greens don’t turn out to be as useless as, say the Irish Greens.

They did a poll and only something like 23 % of Americans support this attack on Iran. That is actually an encouraging sign.

I’ve been watching some podcasts and it’s absolutely stunning how many Dutch morons believe Trump is “bringing democracy to Iran.” Stunning. I think that is the first significant step of de-escalation.

edit: apprently it doesn’t mean much, since all Gulf countries have US bases that are still seen as valid targets

  • #146128

I think at this moment there are 3 main points of contention in this war.

-Can the US and Israel destroy the capacity of Iran to enrich uranium

-Can they stop Iran’s ability to bomb Israel and the Gulf

-Can they free the Hormuz strait to resume shipping

Regime change seems out of the question. There is no way Iranians will overthrow the regime, never mind some Kurds or Balochis. And a US ground invasion is very unlikely.

  • #146129

Red Dwarf in 2016, we’re now here, a few centuries early:

“At the end of the 23rd century, America attempted to bring peace to the world by asking every nation on earth to sign a peace treaty. A war ensued called the War against War. Those countries who went to war because they were so against war were prepared to go to war to fight in a war against war, called themselves United America.”

Actually, it’s the US who’s running out of missiles.

As to Russia, their military was in bad shape. They are having to use decommissioned equipment because they are losing so much “good” stuff. They are struggling to have enough soldiers for the war.

I think with the current operations, we are seeing the true state of the big militaries and it’s not a great picture. I believe there has been a lot of bluffing and posturing that has been revealed to be complete bullshit.

Russia gaining huge benefits from the war in Iran. Starting to think they are smarter than we are.

I think Iran’s gameplan right now is, pbviously keeping Hormuz closed, but also driving a wedge between the Gulf States and the US. Iran is saying “we’ll stop bombing you if you kick out the yankees.” It’s not completely unthinkable. Iran has shown US protection doesn’t stop their countries from being bombed, and their economy destroyed.

Going from being at threat of being killed by one government to three isn’t good.

we are seeing the true state of the big militaries and it’s not a great picture. I believe there has been a lot of bluffing and posturing that has been revealed to be complete bullshit.

It shows the US to be incompetent but that’s not necessarily an indictment of the military skills and capacities, it’s how they are used by the civilian leadership. In terms of the damage that was done to Iran, the country is severely hurt, but that doesn’t mean the regime is destroyed or the military is eliminated. Those goals just can’t be achieved by aerial bombardment. No matter how competent your airforce is.

At this point there is no realistic goal. Trump and Hegseth thought Iran would fold after some airstrikes and assassinations, but the Iranian regime, it may be evil, but they are no cowards.

Iran has been preparing for this for DECADES. They have systems and contingencies in place. They were more ready for the attack than US was. Hell, when they saw the fleet out in the sea, they began activating all their plans.

You can’t beat a country by bombing alone. You have to put troops on the ground. And that’s where the US will really feel it. And just because there is an opposition to the current government, that doesn’t mean they’re taking to the streets. They are also a relatively small group compared to the size of the government’s machine. The government is composed of fanatics. And when the US bombed that girl’s school, how many more fanatics were created?

This has to be the stupidest thing Trump has done so far.

I don’t believe the Iranian government has a lot of popular support in Iran, if you would look at it democratically; the majority probably loathes their government. But that doesn’t mean they can overthrow the government. There doesn’t seem to be much of an armed resistance.

  • #146344

Nope, it’s far harder said than done, especially when the government both controls communications and has done massacres of its own people.

Yeah I listened to a Dutch podcast which has had a lot of good episodes on certain subjects, but their take on this conflict in Iran was so atrocious. They said “Trump has taken out the leadership, now it is up to the people of Iran to take over the country…” I mean….my God, how can they be so dumb? Do they think a million protestors can just take over a country, if they’re not well armed? If there is no buy in from regime forces who are willing to turn against government leaders?

The regime is not popular but it has a loyal core of followers.

Chilling thought: he’s still got 2.75 years left in his term.

I truly doubt he will live that long.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The satirical comedy about the power vacuum after Trump dies is going to be a classic on The Death of Stalin levels

More importantly those followers have the weapons and levers of power, and they’re not shy about using them.

I think it makes an improvement to not listen to (or read) anything Trump says. At this point it’s just gibberish. He’s said Iran has surrendered a couple of times now. It’s all garbage.

Instead pay attention to what is actually happening, what the military is doing etc

You see a lot of people on social media now claiming that Israel controls the US. (Or they just say Jews.) I think this is mostly wrong. I think you can accuse the Israeli government of having an undue influence on US politics, but it’s not like they can just force the US to go along with everything, the US makes those decisions to go along by themselves. Especially from the evengelical Christian corner there is a lot of willingness to do things that are perceived to be in Israel’s interest, but they’re not forced by Israel to do that, they do it willingly. And Christian zionism predates Jewish zionism.

If you say Israel “controls the US” you’re going along with the antisemitic stereotype that Jews have a kind of secret control over everything.

Interesting. After years of outright insulting and alienating them, he asks these same countries for help with Hormuz:

We’ve got a violent anti-refugee group in the Netherlands causing trouble, the so-called “Defend” groups, organized by city where they protest against asylum centres, like Defend Amsterdam, Defend Utrecht, Defend Alkmaar, Defend Lutjebroek etc. Their modus operandi is violent protest and threats to stop the building of new asylum centres.

These guys are just full on nazis. Including yelling about “dirty Jews” etc. Absolutely rabid xenophobes.

(By the way I don’t understand why a Dutch nationalist would use an English word to name their organization)
