There are people complaining about Ukraine drone bombing Russian military planes, unironically, calling it an act of aggression. I think we need to be careful with escalation and keep searching for peaceful solutions, but to call Ukraine the aggressor is insane.

Good news. Wilders has pulled the plug on this government, so we’ll likely get new elections, or they’ll try to form another coalition based on the last election result.

Whichever happens, Wilders is out. It seems very unlikely other parties will want to govern ith him after new elections.

One of the most read newspapers in the Netherlands is really pushing the message hard that Wilders’s plans failed because all the other parties conspired against him, rather than it being impossible because it went against EU and human rights treaties. Pretty worrying. It reminds me of the Dolchstoss myth which was one of the factors that helped the nazis rise to power.

A feud now. “Trouble in paradise”:

I don’t know what to make of this back and forth between them.

Any predictions on the US the rest of the year or the next three? How will it all play out?

    ——————-

I found the First they came for poem:

It’s been used as there are parallels to this era. There has been a lot on social media on when did it all start to build up. It’s been said that some who are complaining now didn’t really move much in the election after Obama, trans rights, kids in cages, Mexican border, BLM, Asians attacked. But by the time they got affected it’s too late. They take the frustrations and complaints out on those who gave fair warning years ago.

I really think it’s over in Europe. US at least still has politically important happenings. Europe is just an empty shell, zombified, idiotic politicians who just go through the motions of decline. Crazy ideologies. Peope who are just hopeless.

There will probably be chaos and at some point we’re taken over by Russia.

  • #133065

US nuclear umbrella keeps Europe safe during Cold War -> US retreats from Europe during Russia-Ukraine war  -> nuclear weapons are bad, let’s not arm ourselves!

This old left attitude is just stupid, a remnant of lefties from the 70s. We should be armed to the teeth, including nuclear weapons.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jun/08/uk-strategic-defence-review-nuclear-arms-race-armageddon

We had an anti-nuclear weapons protest movement in the Netherlands in the 80s, and afterwards it turned out many of the leaders were bankrolled by Moscow.

Honestly, we should be looking for opportunities for a cease fire and better relations with Russia, but I don’t appreciate this type of peacenik or soft libtardism. We should be armed, and capable of knocking Moscow out if they dare attack us. That is deterrence. Only with deterrence you can maintain peace. We should stand for our country, and our values, and stand ready to destroy whoever attacks it.

I think there is still a lot of hope for Europe. But it’s hard not to get frustrated sometimes. When our last government fell apart… that was our shot, you know. A center-left government willing to do a lot of necessary reform, amongst which a bit of financial justice and the hope for a lot of energy transformation. Instead, it all fell apart pretty quickly. And now the conservatives are rewinding again, easing taxes on the rich while making it harder for the poorest, and doing their very best to cling to fossil where they can.

The left is full of imbeciles. Maaaaaaaybe not to the degree the right is, but they’re pretty fucking stupid. Or evil. (not all of them though)

  • #135816

Still, I admit the right is the biggest threat right now. The US looks like it might start to build a dystopian control state with palantir checking everybody’s movements. But you know, it is close. For instance Brazil’s commie government just sentenced a comedian to 8 years in prison for doing “racist jokes”.

There is still one left wing party here in the Netherlands I can vote for that aren’t crazy with the woke shit and have some common sense.

Now there is an article “Where is Obama?” as if he is obligated to speak out on all this. Before this, fingers were pointed to Kamala Harris, and other Dems for not speaking out since Day 1. The truth is, she did run on short notice and mentioned the Project 2025 agenda that was coming. #47 mentioned serious cuts and deportations all along, and now some are shocked that the layoffs got to them and how ICE is like the Gestapo staking out places that have a great concentration like immigration buildings, construction sites, even some Home Depot stores and just rounding up people.

Taking your frustrations out on those who warned you and expecting them to protest now when you should have protested with them a long time before things got this bad is telling. They say no because you had your chance and they won’t be pushed to the front as a buffer for tear gas and batons. (“We’re not human shields”) . It’s not just the GOP regime and their agenda, it is also the Dem party, voter mentality, and to a certain extent, a lack of ally ship among activists.

Brown people aren’t allow fly flags to show they’re proud of their heritage, that’s reserved for white people.  Or people who we now consider to be white but didn’t in the past like the Irish and Italians.

There are links that give more of a breakdown of Florida Hispanics voting. Basically it was the Venezuelan vote who felt protected with TPS status and the Cuban vote, who were along the lines of a Marco Rubio, that type. There are issues of class, ethnicity, and also colorism as some want to be accepted as white like the Irish and Italians before them.

There are video snippets of some Latinos/Hispanics in tears saying “I can’t believe seeing ICE is hunting us down like that. Staking us out, wearing masks, all military.” They talk like it never happened before.

Now aside from LA, there are now travel bans in place to Cuba and other places that have separations of families and so on. How much worse is it going to be?

Dutch twitter has a whole rabid contingent of pro-Israeli tweeters who support everything Israel does, even if it is purposely blowing up kids, and they attack anyone who is even slightly critical. Crazy shit.

I think maybe some are on Israel’s payroll, but there are also a lot of orthodox protestants here who are in the loony pro-Israel camp. But I think most Dutch people now want the government to be more critical of Israel. Polls are like 55 % critical of Israel and 45 % supportive.

This has also been happening in Germany. Even Merz has spoken out against Netanyahu now, even though criticism from Germany towards Israel is always rather muted, which is probably for the best even now.

  • #138836

We had a huge fight some weeks ago between Pro-Palesininian protestors and inhabitants of the town of Katwijk in the Netherlands. There was a church that wanted to do a pro-Israel celebration, protestors wanted to disturb that, and the townsfolk pretty much kicked them out of town. It was pretty bad. No one was killed, but it was pretty unpleasant.

It’s tough to pick sides. Protest should be allowed but this usually goes a bit further than just protesting, they harrass people, things like intimidating them, spitting on them etc. and they damage property. On the other hand, that church that did the celebration is pretty disgusting. It was organized by a group called “Christians for Israel” that has been accused of doing things like raising money to buy weapons for Israel.

Still I think if you do a protest like that it is better to be well behaved. I don’t think people should be harrassed for supporting Israel, just as you shouldn’t harrass someone for supporting other countries that do bad things, like Iran or China. However if you express support for a massacre of children, or mass rapes, or genocide…I can understand why people are pissed off at that.

Yeah, we had some very peaceful pro-Palestinian protests here in Bonn, but there’s also been a rise in anti-semitic incidents.

I do sympathise with how frustrating it must be to live in a country that is sitting on its hands and doing nothing while your relatives and friends are being killed in Gaza. But if this spills over into attacking German Jewish people… well, that’s just a line you can’t cross in Germany.

  • #138865

I think there is something brewing internationally which might not be straightforward anti-semitism, but every Jewish citizen of Israel is fair game, they can be killed without any problem. Men, women and children. Come to think of it, it is the same attitude many Israelis have towards Palestinians. Any citizen, no matter their personal convictions, can be killed because they are from “a bad country”. Even though many Israelis disagree with their government’s actions.

And even if they agreed with those actions, that is not an excuse to attack civilians. The same is true for Palestinians, many of them agreed with the attacks of October 7th, but that is not a reason to kill Palestinian civilians. It’s similar to things that happened in WW2, the nukes on Japan and the bombings of Dresden and other cities. In war every citizen can be a target.

It’s the same logic Russia is applying on Ukraine ( and also some people use the same approach on Russians, saying Russians are orcs, naturally evil people, or doing stupid things like throwing away their Russian novels etc). The whole country is painted as entirely evil and irredeemable.

  • #138870

One of the things that is shocking to me is how many journalists here have been justifying the war crimes in Gaza in this way. There still is a lot of “Well, after October 7th, what else can they do?” kind of talk as if this justified mass killings of civilians, as if there was no Geneva convention or war crimes didn’t matter as long as the “right” side does them.

Just old bloodthirsty instincts stirring. They’re all getting ready for war (and we’re going to lose because our countries are fucking stupid)

Honestly we’re not much better than North Korea. Yes they keep some of their citizens in concentration camps, but I think our own authorities might do the same if they thought they could get away with it. Our control mechanisms are subtler. (And getting less subtle, there is ever more repression)

  • #138901

Some Israelis seem to believe Iranians will rise up against their government. I think that is very dumb. If anything attacks on the country make it more likely Iranians will stand behind their government.

  • #138930

There’s a weird kind of entanglement between the Israeli conflict and Ukraine. If Israel attacks nuclear plants in Iran, this could give Russia carte blanche to attack Ukrainian nuclear plants.

He is. And also he says the dumbest things, even from the perspective of people who agree with him. “Dirty work” indeed.

The whole illegals thing is just stupid to me. If you’re illegaly in a country, out you go. The problem in the US seems to be that many Americans don’t have IDs so you can’t simply do an ID check to determine if anyone is illegal.

Leftoids who say everybody should be allowed to stay are mindbroken. Or traitors, when they’re part of the globalist elite.

Or they are just aware of the actual situation. Also, Jesus, Arjan, the vocabulary you’re using there suggests you’re going off the deep end. The actual globalist elite are the super-rich, but those are the ones who definitely want you to blame immigrants for everything – and not our rising social inequality.

Others have already said it, but to reiterate: As far as Americans go, it’s not just about ID. It’s that they’ve built a system that depends on undocumented workers. And this is not actually illegal labour, given that these people pay taxes. So by throwing them out, you’re destabilising the economy, which is why Trump suddenly stopped going for undocumented workers in areas and for companies that he needs.

People keep acting like these undocumented people are somhow exploiting the US. It’s actually the other way around: By allowing them to work but keeping their status illegal, they provide cheap labour and pay taxes, but they don’t get any of the advantages you’re supposed to be able to get, like healthcare or your employer taking actual responsibility for you. Nobody gives a shit if you’re hurt in the course of doing your work. Plus, you can at some point just throw them out so you don’t have to pay for pensions. This is what large parts of the American economy – e.g. the agriculture sector – are built upon.

So no, not traitors. Just more aware of the actual situation than you.

Oh, and by the way, if you were arguing that these people who have been keeping the country wealthy and stable with their badly paid labour for decades deserve to finally become official citizens and that this practice should finally be put to a stop, I completely agree. But that’s certainly not something Trump is fucking talking about.

We are so cooked. In four years time the percentage of people aged 15-19 who think homosexuality is OK, has dropped from around 70 % to under 50 %. They did this survey in 8 regions in the Netherlands, Amsterdam but also more rural regions, and in Amsterdam it is 43 %. Funny enough it is highest in a rural region, Gelderland where it is above 70 %.

  • #139131

Could you read what people are replying to you, Arjan, and not just panik-post one piece of the apocalypse after the other?

As for that survey, that’s horrifying, and surprising. There’s been a resurgence in homophobia here, as well – German parliament has decided to not fly the rainbow flag for the CSD anymore, and there have been some violent attacks on CSD celebrations by neo-nazis. It kinda had ot be expected with the current climate of fascism, but when it comes to 15-19-year-olds, you have to wonder how much of it is the influence of toxic male influencers like Andrew fucking Tate on TikTok.

If you want to talk about specific examples where Oliver gave wrong information, we can happily do that, but if you don’t have any you’re just talking out of your ass and refusing to be informed about matters that you comment agressively and insultingly on. That would firmly put you on the wrong side of the situation you are so frustrated by, Arjan.

You don’t have to watch this clip, of course. There are many many many sources you can use to find out about the exploitation of undocumented labour in the US. Go ahead.

Funny enough Bernie Sanders used to be quite opposed to economic migration because it drove down wages. You don’t hear that argument anymore because that’s racist now, right? Funny how that works.

I suspect he wasn’t against economic migration as such but rather about exploiting undocumented workers, and I also suspect that he still holds that position. Just like I said above that “if you were arguing that these people who have been keeping the country wealthy and stable with their badly paid labour for decades deserve to finally become official citizens and that this practice should finally be put to a stop, I completely agree.”

Oh, look, this is what Sanders said a few months ago:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said there is one thing he agreed with President Trump about: curbing illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the country.

Sanders joined ABC News’s “This Week,” where host Jonathan Karl asked if there was anything Trump has done right.

“I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger,” Sanders replied. “Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate, and I happen to think we need comprehensive immigration reform, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally.”

While the senator agreed with Trump on strengthening the country’s borders to protect citizens, he disagreed with the president’s mass deportation plan.

“He wants to deport 20 million people who are in this country who are undocumented,” Sanders said. “Well, you do that, you destroy the entire country.”

“Because I got news for you, Trump’s billionaire friends are not going to pick the crops in California that feed us. They’re not going to work in meatpacking houses,” he continued. “That’s what undocumented people are doing.”

You are the one who is trying to paint everything in black and white, Arjan, not Sanders or whoever else on the left you think is the enemy here. You are siding with the fascists and not even trying to get the facts of the matter straight.

If you really believe that, I have to wonder why you are in the political discussion threads at all. And while I know things can get personal and testy, I think it is very unfair towards me and the others here to accuse us of arguing in bad faith. It is very frustrating when all I keep doing is to explain my position as best I can and provide evidence for every claim, while you just throw random – often wrong factoids – into the room and then walk away. So maybe it’s time to look into the mirror, Arjan.

Then you are not here to have a conversation. So what are you doing, man? If you aren’t going to exchange ideas and test each other’s positions, why are you here? Just to randomly shout into the void? Again, think about everything you are saying about what is wrong about the world, and then look at what you just said. And then take a look in the mirror.

This place just has a bad vibe over it, the last few years. Maybe it’s time to leave. It’s sad because it used to be a great place to debate. But the good ones are already gone. I still respect you Christian, but there are some people here I grew to dislike intensely.

I think the majority of members here are friendly and tolerant of others, Arjan. To be brutally honest with you, the only “bad vibes” I see regularly here are from your posts.

That’s not intended as a personal attack on you, more like a suggestion that maybe the problem is with your constant focus on negativity in your posts in this thread and others. It isn’t healthy.

I’m not an expert, but I strongly recommend that you stay off of social media for a while, at least the ones with algorithms that feed into your obsessions. Stick to funny/cute animal images instead.

    I wish you well.

Not to diminish the stuff going on in the Middle East right now, but generally and over a longer term, do you not think you would be less afraid and generally angsty if you weren’t constantly wired into and posting about horrible things? Posting about seemingly every single knife crime in Europe for instance. Yeah, they’re awful things to have happened, you won’t find anyone here in favour of them, but there’s only so much to be said about them and whatever any of us here say isn’t going to change anything. So maybe just read about (or even don’t do that!) and move on instead of posting about each one and constantly dwelling on it all?

So Labour are, in some respects, doing some good things, like a new industrial strategy, but none of it is going to get its due for two reasons.

One, Trump and Iran. How do you successfully spin the line that Iran’s at fault? Difficult.

Two, the vote on the disability benefits is next week and, to get it through, Labour are saying any MP voting against could lose the whip or be deselected! Some of the MPs against the proposed cuts, and they are cuts, are Select Committee Chairs too. Yet, Labour’s response is absurd overkill.

And these two things eclipse all else they are doing.

Never mind that their disability proposals have been shredded from all directions, including the DWP. Even the basis of their future benefit levels, which is being used to justify them, is questionable. And they are hell bent on not changing course.

I don’t get it, I don’t understand it. They have a +100 majority they could do anything with and this is what they have decided on.  Nor does people saying Reform would be worse, they would, do anything as to why Labour are doing this above all else.

Labour are saying any MP voting against could lose the whip or be deselected!

As I said when Starmer did this immediately after coming in and removing the whip from 7 of his own MPs (who are still in a coalition of independents with Corbyn now) it is the move of a weak leadership desperately trying to convey strength it doesn’t have. Whether it’s actually Starmer himself or his chief advisor I’m blanking on the name of (McGillicuty?) that he doesn’t seem able to over-rule, it’s self-defeating and quite pathetic. Some parliamentary scuttlebutt I saw last week/on the weekend said there’s potentially 170 rebels. If they did all rebel (and I don’t think they will) that’s an entire party’s worth of MPs that he’s boxed himself into either kicking out of Labour or backing down to and looking weaker than he would have otherwise.

It reminds me so much of teachers I had at secondary school whose entire strategy for dealing with people misbehaving even slightly was to go nuclear and there’s no way that works long term for 99% of people.

“These are my principles, if you don’t like them, I have others.”

This is a big part of the problem the Democrats are facing in the US as well.  They largely backed Andrew Cuomo in their primary for the New York mayor election, because the most popular candidate (and as it happens, the winner of the Primary) is Zohran Mamadi, a progressive Muslim. Cuomo was ousted as governor of New York following credible charges of sexual assault, and if they’re willing to back Cuomo, what worth are their criticisms of Trump’s history of sexual assault?  Doubly so when they’re doing it as part of what is almost certainly a concerted effort to minimise progressive voices in their own party?

Yep. Pleasantly surprised to see Mamdani pull it off.

But it shouldn’t have been a contest with Cuomo, he shouldn’t have been backed in the way he was. And then there’s the Clintons backing him too.

Voters generally have short attention spans and will typically vote for the person whose name is familiar or has a favorable association. In Cuomo’s case, many New Yorkers remember him, as Governor, reassuring us via daily televised conferences during the COVID lockdown, of everything his administration was doing to help the people of NYC (in particular) and talk us off the ledge. That memory was apparently stronger than the various sexual and ethical accusations that led to his resignation as governor.

That being said, I’m thrilled that Mamdani apparently has won the Democratic primary. Cuomo is already whispering about the likely possibility of running as an Independent in the general election (as is current mayor Eric Adams); if so, we’re stuck with another season of endless political ads on television leading to November. Yay!

It’s funny how many people who championed Vote Blue No Matter Who as a catchphrase and chided leftists for being skeptical about Harris are talking up voting for Cuomo or Adams as independents or even backing Curtis Siwa.

And by funny, I mean utterly predictable.  The left is always told to compromise with the nominal centre, but the centre will almost never consider compromising with the left.

My hope is that enough young people, disenfranchised/fringe people, and intelligent people who’ve seen the corruption and ineffectiveness of the current Democratic machine against the MAGA juggernaut will figure out that our best chance right now is to turn away from the same-old/same-old, and start putting faith in new leaders who are actually representing the people they are supposed to serve rather than serving their own self-interests and those of their rich sponsors.

But what do I know? I’m just an old fart who voted for Michael Dukakis.

I would say that the progressives like AOC and Mamdani need to really claim and define the word “socialist” for the people. In the States, socialism comes across different than elsewhere. There was some confusion about it with Bernie when he was running, some were saying he was a “commie” etc. They need to make that word not be a quick turn off for the people.

    Speaking of which:

Chris Cuomo Makes Shocking Claims After Brother’s NYC Mayoral Defeat

Chris Cuomo has addressed his brother’s, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, defeat in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, claiming that the Democratic Party is “dead.”

The news anchor spoke on the matter on his NewsNation show on Wednesday (June 25), saying his brother’s loss to 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani was a sign that the Democrats are in “a period of extremism” and “tacitly supporting extreme Islamism.”

“Thank you very much for all the kind words about my brother. I didn’t cover the mayoral election or even comment on it here at NewsNation for obvious reasons, and my feelings about my brother and what he should do now, those are personal, not professional. So suffice to say, I love and support my brother and I’m not worried about him,” Chris said at the top of the segment, per Mediaite.

He went on to say he wasn’t surprised by the Democratic primary results in New York City, citing “low turnout” and that “enthusiasm and turnout energy were overweighted for the more extreme candidates.”

“There were several radical choices in the mix, not to mention, and contrary to what was sold by his opponents, Andrew’s no establishment guy, and the party was not loving that he ran, but that’s his case to make, okay?” Chris continued.

He then turned his attention to Mamdani, a democratic socialist, claiming that the Democratic Party’s support of such a candidate means they’re “now officially in MAGA mode.”

“The same way MAGA played with the prejudices of white nationalism, you’re seeing an identical dynamic on the left with prejudices like tacitly supporting extreme Islamism or targeting Jews,” Chris claimed. “For the right, it’s migrants. For the left, it’s Jews. It’s fundamentalist Christians dominating the right. It’s fundamentalist Islamists making headway on the left. I know that doesn’t sound like Democrats, but that party is dead. What it will be reborn as, we’ll see.”

Chris stated there are now “many in America who are adopting and adapting to fundamentalism,” noting, “The outcome in this election wasn’t about affordability or about real change. The winner is an open socialist and the Democratic Party is now just that: socialistic. But be clear, this is a fictional fix for very real frustrations.”

Andrew previously served as the 56th governor of New York from 2011 until his resignation in 2021 following sexual harassment charges. Chris was later fired from CNN after it came out he was involved with his brother’s defense.

Sounds like they may have given way enough to salvage the bill.

There’s reason for scepticism, but combined with the practical capacity of DWP to respond to new claims and ongoing reviews, it’s still a win.

If you’re not currently disabled then don’t become so, as the new rules are on new claims.

All is forgiven? Far, far from it. This will be met with a take what can be got aspect. There were far easier roads to get to it, without as much of a permanent reputational hit.

There were far easier roads to get to it, without as much of a permanent reputational hit.

This might as well be the official Labour slogan under Starmer.

While some of the constant negative press for Labour is undoubtedly due to rightwing media bias, the truth is that the current version of the party is just not very good at the political aspects of policymaking, like making decisions that people can get behind or even understand the rationale behind, both within the party and for the population at large.

This then creates the image of a government that is both out of touch with the priorities of regular people, and seemingly happy to continue following some of the worst thinking of the Conservative governments of the previous 14 years.

It’s bad enough for this to be happening for a government that is (at least nominally) supposed to represent a more progressive alternative to the previous regime, but what’s even worse is that it opens the door to a populist approach from the likes of Reform – cynical opportunists who are unfortunately being presented with an open goal of an opportunity at the moment.

There is time for Labour to turn this around within the current term – they have four more years, after all – but that requires a mindset of acknowledging past mistakes and learning how to navigate the complexities of governing and anticipate obstacles before they happen. And this government doesn’t seem to be very big on those qualities so far.
