Yeah, I can totally see why he’s done it. It does possibly set a dangerous precedent, but given the corruption Trump is prone to, I don’t think that’s really a consideration worth giving weight to – he doesn’t need precedent to abuse Presidential power. This comment at the end is interesting though.

Today is a hard day for me, as I imagine it is for many Americans. But there’s a reason it’s difficult for me.
This January 20th would have been my maternal grandmother’s 102nd birthday. Nana was one of the people who protested Trump’s discriminatory housing policies. She knew he and Trump were bigots. Now on this day, where we also celebrate one of the greatest civil rights leaders in history, this demagogue is about to take the highest office in the land for a second time. And I can’t help but hear a rustling sound. And that rustling is my Nana rolling in her grave.

I could write a long response here, but I’ll simply say that anyone who thinks there is no difference between a Harris and Trump presidency is 100% wrong.
This! I don’t know how people didn’t vote for the Dems knowing that Trump stood for everything they hate. A two party system is a lesser or greater of two evils. Trump rolls back trans and gender-identity rights and takes aim at DEI
Donald Trump issued an executive order rescinding two orders that Biden signed on his first day in office four years ago, one advancing racial equity for under-served communities and another combating discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
One executive order, called “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”, instructs the federal government to remove “all radical gender ideology guidance, communication, policies, and forms”.
“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,” the president said during his inaugural address.
The order directs the secretaries of state and homeland security to ensure that passports, visas and other official government documents reflect male and female as the only two sexes. Agencies will also be prohibited from promoting gender transition, and prisons will be instructed not to use taxpayer funds for gender transition services.
“Agencies will cease pretending that men can be women and women can be men when enforcing laws that protect against sex discrimination,” the order states.

It is stupid how we limit ourselves with our pious lies. We say nukes are bad so we shouldn’t have them, yet we are protected from invasion by Russia by American nukes. Many now even lament Ukraine giving away its nukes in the 90s.
NATO was a very good protection for a long time; building our own nuclear arsenal would’ve been nonsense while it worked.
Right now, we may actually need more defensive capacity of our own, but we do have nukes already in the EU – let’s not forget that the French have some.We need to stop with the soft bullshit and just do what is right for us and our own people.
I hope this is okay to say, it sounds like you’re spiralling a bit there. Maybe time to take a break from politics for a bit.

And, if not for the mass purge of voters of color, if not for the mass disqualification of provisional and mail-in ballots, if not for the new mass “vigilante” challenges in swing states, Harris would have gained at least another 3,565,000 votes, topping Trump’s official popular vote tally by 1.2 million.
As in Bush v. Gore in 2000 and in too many other miscarriages of Democracy, this election was determined by good old “vote suppression,” the polite term we use for shafting people of color out of their ballot. We used to call it Jim Crow.
Here are key numbers:
— 4,776,706 voters were wrongly purged from voter rolls according to US Elections Assistance Commission data.
— By August of 2024, for the first time since 1946, self-proclaimed “vigilante” voter-fraud hunters challenged the rights of 317,886 voters. The NAACP of Georgia estimates that by Election Day, the challenges exceeded 200,000 in Georgia alone.
— No fewer than 2,121,000 mail-in ballots were disqualified for minor clerical errors (e.g. postage due).
— At least 585,000 ballots cast in-precinct were also disqualified.
— 1,216,000 “provisional” ballots were rejected, not counted.
— 3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote.If the purges, challenges and ballot rejections were random, it wouldn’t matter. It’s anything but random. For example, an audit by the State of Washington found that a Black voter was 400% more likely than a white voter to have their mail-in ballot rejected. Rejection of Black in-person votes, according to a US Civil Rights Commission study in Florida, ran 14.3% or one in seven ballots cast.
There are also the uncountable effects of the explosive growth of voter intimidation tactics including the bomb threats that closed 31 polling stations in Atlanta on Election Day.
In 2024, especially, after an avalanche of new not-going-to-let-you-vote laws passed in almost every red state, the number of citizens Jim Crow’d out of their vote soared into the millions. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, since the 2020 election, “At least 30 states enacted 78 restrictive laws” to blockade voting. The race-targeted laws ran the gamut from shuttering drop boxes in Black-majority cities to, for the first time, allowing non-government self-appointed “vote fraud vigilantes” to challenge voters by the hundreds of thousands.
Sounds about right. This is all shit everybody knew was going on, and didn’t fight hard enough. And now the Republicans have four more years to keep rigging the system, to make sure Trump and his dynasty stay in power.

Yeah, sure, we know that. But he thinks it’s a resounding success, so of course he’s going to keep trying it. And eventually it’s actually going to get him something more than things that were already in place. I kinda wish Canada had just stood up to him and got into retaliatory tariffs. Sure, it would have been painful for people in both countries, but it would have possibly helped put an end to this instead of indulging him.

A scorpion and a frog meet each other on the banks of a stream.
The scorpion is on its way to the other side of the bank and but the waters are too treacherous for it to cross.
So the scorpion politely asks the frog to help carry it across the water.

Surprise, fucking surprise. Right now, it is rather hard to feel sympathy for people who voted for Trump when they thought he was only going to fuck other people over and not them.
There is a lot of that with many groups. Apparently, they didn’t realize anything from the way Spanish speaking people were being treated at the Mexican border. Or the way Puerto Rico was treated when the island had a crisis. Didn’t see any of that applying to them. Then again, to be in MAGA, you would have to step over the felony convictions, Jan 6th, a lot of comments and remarks made on issues, and be on the same page with violent supremacist groups. Now these groups are seeing that while they may not be black African-American, they aren’t exactly white either and … “They don’t like you either”.
There is also a lot of voting against themselves. Some who are really down and out actually still vote GOP, even when Dems had an economy package proposal that would have helped. The thing was the package would also have helped others beside themselves, so it is voting GOP to spite the others. It was said that is part of the reason why there is no real US universal healthcare or social programs.

To briefly get back to my earlier comment:The Venezuelan situation touches on identity politics where people want to differentiate themselves from others. I see some of it with Brazil, but with Spanish speaking peoples, this Latina comedienne did a standup routine where she was saying (not mentioning names right now) x group feels they got one over on the rest because they speak better Spanish, y group feels they are superior to them because their skin is lighter, Z feels they are closer to the US and more about European descent… But while they are all feeling that way with each other and jockeying for position, real MAGA just laughs saying “I don’t give a s*t! F them and deport them all over the border!” Doesn’t make a difference…
All this gives evidence that they were all divided and there was no outright coalition or allyship. They all never got on the same page, some sided with MAGA feeling they were the exception and now it’s “Wtf happened? We got screwed” etc.
