I wonder who’ll be next week’s Prime Minister?

Nah, what’s wanted is a Democrat who isn’t going “let’s be reasonable about this” while the Republicans are applying an industrial sander to their private parts
So go try and be unreasonable, see how well that works.
Lefties and democrats lose because they have stupid bullshit agendas, not because they’re not guillotining enough people.
Elon is beefing with a deranged twitch streamer who never brushes his teeth
Heh. Well, it’s a good tourist attraction move if nothing else.
Y’know it occurs to me that, as the world is turning more and more into a William Gibson novel, what we’re missing is the good kind of eccentric billionaire to even things out a little. Who’d have thought that that aspect would be the most unrealistic in all of his sci-fi stuff?
I don’t recall any good billionaires in Gibson

Tell me how the fabled US bi-partisanship works with the current incarnation of the Republican party. It doesn’t.
“We have to work with these people”. Not when you’re voting their legislation through you don’t.
Oh, and the only ones going on about beheadings is you and Christian.
Talking about any kind of left in US politics is also hilarious, as there isn’t one. Your US voter choice is right-of-centre versus far right, and enough of them want far right.
And in “Trump is a lying liar who lies” news:
‘Don’t you dare start reneging!’ MAGA fans turn on Trump over Friday night appointment
The only area where Labour and Conservatives unite on regularly is kicking the disabled:
Labour doubles down on slashing billions from DWP’s disability benefits bill
Even when the DWP’s own figures show zero fraud:

Oh hey, can we take a minute to applaud the Democrats for allowing Trump to successfully attack them from the Left? Bra-vo, you fucking useless wastes of carbon.
Now Lorcan they have to be reasonable about all this, careful and meticulous… hey wait, how did being all that work for that other guy, whatsername?

Fuck you, Lorcan!
They have stereotypes they are required to live down to!
This is insane, I get the logic, can see why it is warranted, but still insane that it is needed:
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/20/politics/joe-biden-preemptive-pardons/index.html
Yeah, I can totally see why he’s done it. It does possibly set a dangerous precedent, but given the corruption Trump is prone to, I don’t think that’s really a consideration worth giving weight to – he doesn’t need precedent to abuse Presidential power. This comment at the end is interesting though.
“The pardons are actually great news. No one who was just pardoned will be able to refuse to testify in a civil, criminal, or congressional proceeding based upon the 5th Amendment,” Binnall wrote.
Today is a hard day for me, as I imagine it is for many Americans. But there’s a reason it’s difficult for me.
This January 20th would have been my maternal grandmother’s 102nd birthday. Nana was one of the people who protested Trump’s discriminatory housing policies. She knew he and Trump were bigots. Now on this day, where we also celebrate one of the greatest civil rights leaders in history, this demagogue is about to take the highest office in the land for a second time. And I can’t help but hear a rustling sound. And that rustling is my Nana rolling in her grave.
Biden just commuted Leonard Peltier’s sentence. Like, good, but why not do this 4 years ago? Or fucking decades ago?
Biden just commuted Leonard Peltier’s sentence. Like, good, but why not do this 4 years ago? Or fucking decades ago?
There was so much Biden should have done but didn’t.

If this is the end of American democracy, that’s a fitting epitaph.
Re: That precedent Biden set…
More than likely followed by Trump pardoning en masse his January 6 mob.

There’s the protagonist’s former boyfriend in Agency. But yeah, fair enough, it’s more that there are billoinaire characters whose interests sometimes align with the protagonists for a bit.
No, it was not odd, nor was it “Roman”, it was a Nazi salute. Twice.
One down:
I could write a long response here, but I’ll simply say that anyone who thinks there is no difference between a Harris and Trump presidency is 100% wrong.
This! I don’t know how people didn’t vote for the Dems knowing that Trump stood for everything they hate. A two party system is a lesser or greater of two evils. That’s it. “I don’t like Harris’ LGBTQ stance”. Fine. This is your vote and you can use it any way you want. Her stance was bullshit. But now you have Trump. His is not better.
Day one:
Trump rolls back trans and gender-identity rights and takes aim at DEI
Donald Trump issued an executive order rescinding two orders that Biden signed on his first day in office four years ago, one advancing racial equity for under-served communities and another combating discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
One executive order, called “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”, instructs the federal government to remove “all radical gender ideology guidance, communication, policies, and forms”.
“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,” the president said during his inaugural address.
The order directs the secretaries of state and homeland security to ensure that passports, visas and other official government documents reflect male and female as the only two sexes. Agencies will also be prohibited from promoting gender transition, and prisons will be instructed not to use taxpayer funds for gender transition services.
“Agencies will cease pretending that men can be women and women can be men when enforcing laws that protect against sex discrimination,” the order states.
Had to chuckle when I saw Melania’s memecoin was called $Melania.

Why did prisons do gender transition services? (With taxpayer money?)
Doesn’t that sound the slightest bit ridiculous? I’m glad Trump stopped this. Yes he’s a cunt, yes trans people are valid, bla bla bla But you can go too far with this stuff.
edit: I’m against this executive order. It is insensitive towards trans gender people, but yeah, the prison thing strikes me as bizarre.
https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/southport-killer-axel-rudakubana-carried-a-knife-more-than-ten-times/
Honestly looking back at this, this kid should have been in a closed psychiatric facility long before this tragedy happened.
Why did prisons do gender transition services? (With taxpayer money?)
Because trans rights are human rights and you can’t deny medical aid to someone just because they’ve committed a crime.
Yes, what Martin said.
They undergo a battery of psych tests from professionals to get that result. It’s not the person “acting out” or “having a mood swing” or whatever bullshit non-believers would have you think.
They find out who the person really is and (should) act accordingly.
On Day One Trump has taken away human rights, and this is only the first domino.
We are all in for one fuck of a stormy ride.
Could maybe, maybe please, the Democrats get their shit together?
Just a thought…
We are all in for one guck of a stormy ride.
That’s what got Trump into trouble in the first place
People like Trump and Musk are the reason the guillotine was invented.
This is going viral and for good reason:
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: “I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives … and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals”
It seems almost appropriate to post this afterward:
Donald Trump Is at War with America
Why couldn’t Dems do that?
Because they were playing by the old rules.
Two year old toddler stabbed to death by an Afghan migrant in Aschaffenburg, Germany. This keeps happening somehow.
Heh it isn’t even in the Guardian…fucking motherfuckers.
Heh it isn’t even in the Guardian…fucking motherfuckers.
The Aschaffenburg thing? It is there now. Not that I think it necessarily should be. A mentally confused person attacking and killing somebody is a tragedy, of course, and so much more so when it’s a child. But it’s not necessarily international news.
Oh, and by the way I see you didn’t mention that the toddler who was killed was from a Maroccan immigrant family.
Trump has canceled Biden’s ethics rules. Critics call it the opposite of ‘drain the swamp’
This whole damn administration is the opposite of “drain the swamp.”
I am already tired of this. I just don’t have the energy to be angry all the time anymore. Trump is going to be doing 10 terrible things every day for the next four years because he’s like a fucking duracell bunny, but with him and our sure-to-wield-horrible-results election over here, I feel like I’m burning out on politics pretty quickly.
This is what everybody feels right now, I know. Resistance exhaustion. Dangerous, yes. But `still real.
It’s very disconcerting seeing the other billionaires, like Zuck and Bezos, also kissing Trump’s ass
It’s not surprising at all, though. They want to keep getting richer and Trump will help with that. They are all power hungry and narcissistic so being in Trump’s orbit feeds that.

Trump’s Gaza proposal rejected by allies and condemned as ethnic cleansing plan
Nice to see some people show some sense.

Jesus, Arjan, chill the fuck out. Are you taking this reaction from the actual article or from a right-wing website? Because what I’m mainly taking from the article is, this kid has been threatening to kill somebody for years, and has taken weapons to attack people at school. He had also shown a fascination with mass shootings.
The point is, there were a lot of red flags, people who noticed and warnings.

I would like to say to all those people whose chose not to vote for Kamala Harris for (vague hand wave) “reasons”…
…everything that is happening is your fault. If y’all had got off your fucking asses and voted for her, we might not be in this nightmare scenario. You knew shit like this was going to happen. You fucking KNEW. You knew and did nothing. This is your fault, and nothing will change that.
I have a coworker who believes that the big reason a lot of people didn’t vote for was good old fashioned misogyny. She may not be wrong.
Regardless, here’s hoping we can survive at least the next two years and be able to flip the House and Senate. Here’s hoping there’ll be an election then…

Sorry but you had a candidate who was weak as shit man.
I think politically Europe needs to get its head out of its ass. I would like to see France and Germany produce a shitload of nukes and place some in Poland, to be used at their discretion. Maybe put some in Greenland too. Strive to equal the US and Russia in nuclear capacity.
It is stupid how we limit ourselves with our pious lies. We say nukes are bad so we shouldn’t have them, yet we are protected from invasion by Russia by American nukes. Many now even lament Ukraine giving away its nukes in the 90s. We need to stop with the soft bullshit and just do what is right for us and our own people.

Which has nothing to do with the reasons to not vote Trump, which is what Todd was talking about. Don’t be wilfully obtuse.

NATO was a very good protection for a long time; building our own nuclear arsenal would’ve been nonsense while it worked.
Right now, we may actually need more defensive capacity of our own, but we do have nukes already in the EU – let’s not forget that the French have some.
We need to stop with the soft bullshit and just do what is right for us and our own people.
I hope this is okay to say, it sounds like you’re spiralling a bit there. Maybe time to take a break from politics for a bit.

Don’t worry, it looks like nature’s about to take its course
https://hartmannreport.com/p/trump-lost-vote-suppression-won-c6f?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
And, if not for the mass purge of voters of color, if not for the mass disqualification of provisional and mail-in ballots, if not for the new mass “vigilante” challenges in swing states, Harris would have gained at least another 3,565,000 votes, topping Trump’s official popular vote tally by 1.2 million.
As in Bush v. Gore in 2000 and in too many other miscarriages of Democracy, this election was determined by good old “vote suppression,” the polite term we use for shafting people of color out of their ballot. We used to call it Jim Crow.
Here are key numbers:
— 4,776,706 voters were wrongly purged from voter rolls according to US Elections Assistance Commission data.
— By August of 2024, for the first time since 1946, self-proclaimed “vigilante” voter-fraud hunters challenged the rights of 317,886 voters. The NAACP of Georgia estimates that by Election Day, the challenges exceeded 200,000 in Georgia alone.
— No fewer than 2,121,000 mail-in ballots were disqualified for minor clerical errors (e.g. postage due).
— At least 585,000 ballots cast in-precinct were also disqualified.
— 1,216,000 “provisional” ballots were rejected, not counted.
— 3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote.If the purges, challenges and ballot rejections were random, it wouldn’t matter. It’s anything but random. For example, an audit by the State of Washington found that a Black voter was 400% more likely than a white voter to have their mail-in ballot rejected. Rejection of Black in-person votes, according to a US Civil Rights Commission study in Florida, ran 14.3% or one in seven ballots cast.
There are also the uncountable effects of the explosive growth of voter intimidation tactics including the bomb threats that closed 31 polling stations in Atlanta on Election Day.
In 2024, especially, after an avalanche of new not-going-to-let-you-vote laws passed in almost every red state, the number of citizens Jim Crow’d out of their vote soared into the millions. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, since the 2020 election, “At least 30 states enacted 78 restrictive laws” to blockade voting. The race-targeted laws ran the gamut from shuttering drop boxes in Black-majority cities to, for the first time, allowing non-government self-appointed “vote fraud vigilantes” to challenge voters by the hundreds of thousands.
Sounds about right. This is all shit everybody knew was going on, and didn’t fight hard enough. And now the Republicans have four more years to keep rigging the system, to make sure Trump and his dynasty stay in power.
Pretty funny to see in the news today OpenAI crying about Deepseek ripping off its model. Turns out that maybe intellectual property is valuable after all!

I hope Trump himself gets behind this and puts all of his energy towards getting his face up on Mount Rushmore. And renaming it Mount Trump. That’d be fucking awesome. The people of the US deserve to be reminded of this time forever and ever. And ever. And then some.
RFK jr really looks super unhealthy.
If you look closely, you can see the Grim Reaper standing behind RFK Jr.
Why he’s the choice for Department of Health and Human Services is, well it’s par for the current course, just baffling to regular people.

the Democrats:
Can’t imagine how bragging about being better at deporting people than the people they claim are fascists lost them the left-wing vote.
Psychos in my country want to wipe out these beauties.
I thin you can tell a lot about people by the way they treat animal life. (I am personally not against eating meat, but I think animals raised for meat still have to be given a good life)
There is a kind of lifeless quality in these people in how they propose to kill them and make the world more sterile, more “safe”, and uglier.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we never hear about these tarrifs again, and yet Trump will still claim victory
Oh no, he’s going to threaten tariffs against everyone now all the time, because (he thinks) it gets him what he wants.

The joke is on Trump. What he asked Mexico and Canada to do, they had already been doing.
The incompetency of this administration is astounding.

Yeah, sure, we know that. But he thinks it’s a resounding success, so of course he’s going to keep trying it. And eventually it’s actually going to get him something more than things that were already in place. I kinda wish Canada had just stood up to him and got into retaliatory tariffs. Sure, it would have been painful for people in both countries, but it would have possibly helped put an end to this instead of indulging him.
DEI is the new term for affirmative action? Just like with affirmative action, this study:
DEI’s also included veterans and disabled, some of whom were surprised to find out their positions were in jeopardy when the executive orders against DEI were made.
There have been other surprises. Some were surprised that they voted for their own deportation and in another case, a teacher was surprised about the defunded programs and how much in resources was gutted in her school district.
This article has some good advice. I don’t agree with all the things he says, but I think it’s a god read because it’s good not to give in to desperation.
He says “read banned books” which can be good I think, but many books that are not banned are good too. Read history books. Read Thomas Paine. Read Marcus Aurelius. Read the Tao te Ching.

For all this about RFK, some in the administration are former Fox commentators, Musk has access to the Treasury payments, and the new Secretary of Transportation, I remember he used to be on MTV “The Real World” years ago.
How is all this going end up? It makes me wonder…

Right now in Florida, over 350K Venezuelans are feeling “beyond betrayed” as they just found out their temporary protected status is going to end soon. They were led to believe all through the election that ICE and deportation etc. didn’t apply to them:

In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won the vote in Miami-Dade County, helped largely by the Hispanic vote, including naturalized Venezuelan Americans. That’s one reason why Ferro and many others here say they’re shocked and disappointed. “Beyond betrayed,” she said. “They used us. During the campaign, the elected officials from the Republican Party, they actually told us that he was not going to touch the documented people. They said, ‘No, it is with undocumented people.'”
Surprise, fucking surprise.
Right now, it is rather hard to feel sympathy for people who voted for Trump when they thought he was only going to fuck other people over and not them.

A scorpion and a frog meet each other on the banks of a stream.
The scorpion is on its way to the other side of the bank and but the waters are too treacherous for it to cross.
So the scorpion politely asks the frog to help carry it across the water.
The scorpion tells the frog he is an excellent swimmer with wide back that can easily carry him across.
Suspicious, the frog asks the scorpion, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion replies, “Why would I do that? Then we would both drown.”
The frog is still unsure and asks the scorpion more questions.
The scorpion always seems to have a logical answer.
Satisfied with the scorpion’s reasoning, the frog allows the scorpion to climb on his back and they begin their journey across the water.
The waves are high and so the scorpion holds on tight to the frogs body.
However, before they can make it halfway across the stream, the frog feels a sting right in the middle of his back and feels the spread of venom slowly taking over his limbs.
The frog begins to slowly sink under the water and, realizing what has happened, has time to gasp out, “Why did you do that? Now we will both drown and die!”
As the scorpion sinks under with the frog, it replies, “It’s in my nature.”
US immigration is gaming Google to create a mirage of mass deportations
News of mass immigration arrests has swept across the US over the past couple of weeks. Reports from Massachusetts to Idaho have described agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) spreading through communities and rounding people up. Quick Google searches for Ice operations, raids and arrests return a deluge of government press releases. Headlines include “ICE arrests 85 during 4-day Colorado operation”, “New Orleans focuses targeted operations on 123 criminal noncitizens”, and in Wisconsin, “ICE arrests 83 criminal aliens”.
But a closer look at these Ice reports tells a different story.
That four-day operation in Colorado? It happened in November 2010. The 123 people targeted in New Orleans? That was February of last year. Wisconsin? September 2018. There are thousands of examples of this throughout all 50 states – Ice press releases that have reached the first page of Google search results, making it seem like enforcement actions just happened, when in actuality they occurred months or years ago. Some, such as the arrest of “44 absconders” in Nebraska, go back as far as 2008.
All the archived Ice press releases soaring to the top of Google search results were marked with the same timestamp and read: “Updated: 01/24/2025”.
Fucking morons.
Fuckers.
This is why the Democrats will always lose to the Republicans.
They don’t have the fucking strength of their convictions, and the Reps do.
Surprise, fucking surprise. Right now, it is rather hard to feel sympathy for people who voted for Trump when they thought he was only going to fuck other people over and not them.
There is a lot of that with many groups. Apparently, they didn’t realize anything from the way Spanish speaking people were being treated at the Mexican border. Or the way Puerto Rico was treated when the island had a crisis. Didn’t see any of that applying to them. Then again, to be in MAGA, you would have to step over the felony convictions, Jan 6th, a lot of comments and remarks made on issues, and be on the same page with violent supremacist groups. Now these groups are seeing that while they may not be black African-American, they aren’t exactly white either and … “They don’t like you either”.
There is also a lot of voting against themselves. Some who are really down and out actually still vote GOP, even when Dems had an economy package proposal that would have helped. The thing was the package would also have helped others beside themselves, so it is voting GOP to spite the others. It was said that is part of the reason why there is no real US universal healthcare or social programs.

Interesting…
In the Netherlands the traditional left wing labour party and the greens want to join into one party. I think this is a bad development.
Although it could also lead to more labour voters going to the SP ( socialist party), a social democrats party with more attention for things like workers rights and anti-neoliberalism. The SP at some point many years ago, like in 2010 had about 15 % in the polls, but now it’s more like 5 %.
Many places in the Netherlands have deer camps where people can feed and pet deer. Like a petting zoo for deer. Our previous no-fun-allowed government had forbidden them and they were to be closed once the animals that lived there had expired. These places are beloved and there was lots of protest. Now the current government has overturned this decision, and the deer camps can stay.
Some of the shit these people do is just crazy.
edit: I misread. It was already the previous government which overturned their own decision. Anyway they’re still assholes.
I’m watching a podcast where they talk about the right wing push and they’re making the interesint g point that the church in Europe is to some extent a moderating factor. They mentioned Germany especially where a bishop was “less Christian” than the CDU which wanted crucifixes in classrooms.
It’s also true in the Netherlands I believe. The most conservative Christians still vote for a Christian political party. Wilders and Baudet don’t get many votes from that demographic. The party they vote for is the SGP which is pretty conservative but I would not call them far right. (And they only get like 3 %, which is much less than two other more liberal Christian political parties)
Italy is an exception though, they don’t really have a truly Catholic party in parliament despite being the original home country of Catholicism.
To briefly get back to my earlier comment:The Venezuelan situation touches on identity politics where people want to differentiate themselves from others. I see some of it with Brazil, but with Spanish speaking peoples, this Latina comedienne did a standup routine where she was saying (not mentioning names right now) x group feels they got one over on the rest because they speak better Spanish, y group feels they are superior to them because their skin is lighter, Z feels they are closer to the US and more about European descent… But while they are all feeling that way with each other and jockeying for position, real MAGA just laughs saying “I don’t give a s*t! F them and deport them all over the border!” Doesn’t make a difference…
All this gives evidence that they were all divided and there was no outright coalition or allyship. They all never got on the same page, some sided with MAGA feeling they were the exception and now it’s “Wtf happened? We got screwed” etc.

Ready is one thing. Willing and able are different matters entirely.
Don’t the democrats always argue government shutdowns hurt the poor?
