It’s why you were fired from Millie’s.

That’s awesome!
It took me much longer than it should have to understand that.

So the question is, should part of the translator’s job be changing source names to English names? (Serious question.)
It’s a good question, and like a lot of translation questions the answer is “it depends”. If the names hold particular meaning that would be beneficial (and possible) to translate, then I would say yes.
Well, Crime & Punishment is probably not a good first book if all you have read is Harry Potter…
But I think names should be translated if their mening is important to the story. So I’m all for translation of superhero names. But of course not their civilian names.
So Batman should be Läderlappen in swedish, but his secret identity should still be Bruce Wayne, not Björn Wingård.
I like Björn Wingård better than Bruce Wayne.

I say no, but that might be a legacy of stupid renamings of characters from 70s and 80s anime like Ken Washio in Gatchaman becoming Ace Goodheart in Battle of the Planets.

In original translation I saw in the 1970s, it was Mark. The names were more normal, but there was also the 7-Zark-7 nonsense.

Mark, Jason, Tiny, Princess and Keyop.
Its been 40 years. How do i know this?

Except when they’re Ace Goodheart, Dirk Daring, Hoot Owl, Agatha June, and Pee Wee.
I used to love that. I was, what, 10 years old? Doubt it would stand the test of time to go seek out those episodes, but good thoughts nonetheless.

I’m kind of disappointed…

In the earliest Dutch translations Marvel and DC superheroes were given Dutch names. Batman was Vleermuis, Spiderman Spinneman, the Avengers de Wrekers…and so forth. The funniest is the Hulk who was called de Rauwe Bonk, which sounds really silly now. It means something like “the rough brute.”
I’ver driven past Crabby Dick’s in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on many occasions; but for some reason I’ve never felt the need to stop there for dinner….
